That sucks, sorry about that, but I hope it does get resolved in 24 hours. I'm not happy I don't have my computer....

The trick is to some upset but not really mad. If you just call complaining and yelling they will think that you are just trying to get something extra. If you rationally explain what the problem is and why it is their responsibility to do something about it in a calm, but still forceful, tone then you are more likely to get results.

Yea I talked to a nice girl.

Got my dv6 Friday. i5 450. TouchScreen (love it) A little disappointed, since I thought it would swivel and play like a tablet.
Got the BlueRay because it was essentially FREE with the $300 coupon.
Backlit KB excellent plus I like the fingerprint password--as long as it remembers, I don't have to--until something goes wrong!
I got lucky. Mine left Shanghai on Tuesday the 6th, sat for 2 days in Anchorage. I woke up on the 9th to find it was out for delivery--all of 4 business days.
Heat not much of an issue. Left side gets warm. Just make sure the rear left vent remains clear (side and bottom).
I got the 1 gig Ati, switchable. Need memory & graphics for intense PowerPoint presentations with video and heavy graphics and animation.
One last thing. My older HP (2.5 years) had the serial number and model number on the bottom. Not so here! It seems to be stored IN the laptop itself--and the model number doesn't use the dv6 nomenclature. Just a heads up, because if you call HP with a problem (they SHOULD have all of this) you might want to have it written down just in case you cannot get it from your computer when they can't find it! -
Welp, played about an hour of the Medal of Honor beta and it ran fan-frickin-tastic. Hwm said it maxed out at 89*C.

Well HP shows my laptop as shipped. Info was sent to FedEx today. According to the tracking number it is set for delievery on this Friday. i dont see it getting here in 3 days after all the foul-ups people are having.
But, on a side note the package is 9.5lbs. -
You might get lucky. In the middle of all those foul ups my laptop sailed right through, and was here a couple days earlier than the expected delivery date provided by Fedex.
-
Tried to use bing cashback with the 400 dollar coupon for mine, just got a BCB denial email today. Boo, that was 51 dollars.
-
Im as giddy as a school girl waiting on daddy to pick me up and go to the ice cream shop! -
Jesus God Christ.
CPU Temp when using battery: 48-56 degrees Celcius.
CPU Temp when battery is disconnected: 58-68 degrees Celsius.
BFBC2 (battery): 60-66 degrees Celsius.
BFBC2 (battery disconnected): 68-78 degrees Celsius.
Sure, I don't have screenshots of exact temperature rates, but the point is that having the battery attached reduces heat by a significant amount. Maybe this is old news, but I just found out and I'm loving my new, very cold, i7.
True story: I usually have my laptop on with the plug as its only power source. Due to whatever impulse the heavens bestowed upon me, I attached the battery. I then proceeded to take a very long dump, followed by washing my hands with lukewarm water. I placed my hand alongside the vent as I usually do to "test" the heat, only to find that my hand was being air-conditioned. Holy mother of god that baby is never coming off again. I'm willing to purchase three seperate batteries just so I can keep this cool. -
Lucky for you. My dv6 still hits 80 some degrees -_-. Should I send this one back? Lol.
-
-
Ugh. I think I'm gonna send this one back for a core i7 one.
-
Hmm... really? I wonder why it works for me and not others...
Could it be I have the high-capacity battery? -
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
So those are your temps with the battery in and the notebook plugged in to AC power?
-
The first is plugged in with the battery on, the second is with the battery off. -
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
Well that is weird. The temps should be the same either way considering that it would be running on AC power in both scenarios.
-
I'm happy to report that temps from just normal web browsing were pretty hot on the left palm rest with my previous laptop with the mechanical hard drive. Now, it's slightly warm but isn't uncomfortable. -
-
This just taken after some very light web browsing. Not really doing much at all.
Edit: Replaced the picture below after an Intel Burn test. Notice the max temps. Still not too bad considering it cooled down immediately.

Yea, the only reason I didn't go for a i7 was "heat" / battery life / switchable graphics. It would actually be cheaper for me to send my 450m back and pick up a core i7 machine. As long as yours is in the same heat range as mine Morx, I feel ok. Like I said, I came from a M11x which ran at 50-60*c max. I have no idea how hot is actually hot lol.

I know this has been discussed before, but considering the thread is 108 pages, I'll ask again. Does applying thermal paste myself void the warranty on the HP?
-
That makes me sad. Despite not needing those 4 cores / 8 threads, it's so tempting to send this i5 machine back for those lower temps.
-
-
HUH? I was under the impression i7's were hotter than i5's. I've been living under a mountain e.e
-
I have to say, I use my laptop plugged in 90% of the time. I don't do anything that requires a quad core and I doubt any upcoming games are going to be using 4 cores and 8 threads. I'd also save 80$, but lose the ssd going with an i7 setup. I think I'll play with this setup for another week and maybe watch you i7 guys. I dunno, the grass might seem greener on the other side.
I was under the impression that i7's ran hotter, but it seems your stuff runs cooler than my i5 lol. -
Well I'm getting an i7 with a ssd in about two days according to hp... But yea I'll let you know once I get it.
-
Good idea to stick around and watch it. I'm not sure that I'd want to lose the SSD.
Your temps are not degrading, or harmful to the i5, and by losing the SSD you are going to see a noticeable difference in performance. Basically you'll lose a lot more performance by dropping the SSD, than you'd gain going to the quad core.
Does it just bug you that you know the temps are getting hot? For me, it doesn't bother me at all? -
Yay, my laptop is now in Anchorage AK, and the stage it's in right now per Fedex is "Int'l Shipment Release". Is that the stage where so many laptops have currently gotten stuck?
-
No, thats what everyone is waiting for. Yours must have gone through perfectly.
-
The hard drive is located underneath the touchpad (the manual says this too). I don't know why people were saying it was underneath the left palmrest, it's a little off center but not that far left. I booted up with the back panel open and ran HDTune a couple of times, and felt the SSD.. it stayed very cool.
On the other hand, the GPU is on the left side, near where the caps lock key is. Running Furmark a few times does heat up the left palmrest, but it takes a few minutes. The heat pipe from the CPU also runs towards the left, but intelburn doesn't heat up the palmrest nearly as much. -
-
It'll heat up quite a bit when doing large file transfers to or from my external hard drive. I'll have to move some files around right now and see if I can get it to heat up from that or not. -

How hot does your stuff run morx. Morx and my machines are running at similar temperatures.
-
Who would know? Who's going to tell he changed it?
-
When you take out screws there might be factory stickers you might have to remove or tht may rip this indcating internal was opened
-
Yea, kinda, but I've opened computers from hp before and nothing had to be ripped.
-
update: so i spoke with FedEx right now and they confirmed in the systems that the necessary documents needed from HP is now with customs. The customs folks are closed at this point so they hope to clear things hopefully tomorrow morning. I hope this is a good sign because this is the first time FedEx has told me documents have been received. all the other calls were no updates. -
I'm not against returning stuff to HP. I returned my first machine because I didn't like how I had customized it. Lol. I'm just trying to say, the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Like my new laptop, has an annoying "clang" sound whenever I use the touchpad. My old one didn't. This very well could be the change from mechanical to SSD drive. It's almost as if the old hard drive provided more of a sturdy base underneath the touchpad, and the SSD doesn't.
Maybe you'll get the i7, and hate that you no longer have the SSD, and realize it's not that huge of a performance difference. Who knows, but just things to consider. -
