I got mine also. What's funny is, I woke up literally 30 seconds before it got here (which is about 30 minutes earlier than I usually wake up). I'm psychic, guys.

@Method: I just googled AMD clock tool and it looks like there are a bunch of places to download it, but I'm not sure if they are up to date or which is recommended or whatever. I can look at that later but I need to unbox my laptop now!

Just a couple of random things:
    - The screen isn't super bright, but its perfectly usable in a well-lit room.
    - The touchpad is very large, and very responsive. Two-finger scrolling also works well. It doesn't cause the cursor to jump around at all, and I've had zero problems with it. It is, however, somewhat insensitive at low speeds.
    - I have the laptop plugged in right now, and because the 5650 is active, the left palmrest is somewhat warm. It isn't unbearable, but it does cause my hand to sweat. Bear in mind though that room temperature is about 85 degrees fahrenheit right now.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask :D

EDIT: I just followed the "How to get Awesome Sound" directions, and the speakers are excellent. The bass isn't incredible of course, but the overall sound is very clear.

    @Method:

What exactly have you done so far in terms of setting it up?

I just turned it on and finished going through that setup stuff that happens when you first turn it on. Now I'm making the recovery discs.

Edit: The touchpad is definitely finicky out of the box. I haven't messed with the settings yet or anything.
Edit2: The first recovery disc took 30 minutes. 5 discs are needed.

Not much. I've made recovery discs, downloaded iTunes, installed a game, and downloaded oovoo. What do mean by finicky?

The cursor jumps around when I try to click sometimes (I assume my thumb is crossing over the button part). Like you said, it is also little insensitive at low speeds. And two-finger scrolling is a little hit-or-miss; my fingers have to be perfectly placed, or it won't scroll. I find this odd, because when I went to Fry's I had no trouble with two finger-scrolling.

Edit: Also, as you mentioned, the left palm rest is a little warm, but I can't even tell that it is warm when my palm/wrist is on it, only when I put my fingers on it.

Edit2: (Yes I know, I always think of more to say after I post. I guess it's just how my mind works).
I plan to do a Minimized Image Recovery later. Are any of you going to do a clean install? I think I'm too lazy to.

Thats weird. I'm not having the same problem with the cursor.

I won't be doing a clean install. I just don't feel like it.

Would anyone be able to tell me how to access the fan settings for my laptop? I just turned off the gpu, and I want to cool this thing down faster, so I'd like to turn the fan on.

Oh yea. Another question. I know this has been answered in this thread but its a ways back and I dont feel like searching for it. What do I do about the volume thing? Whenever I go to change the volume when I'm running a game, for example, the volume bar pops up and minimizes the game. Thanks in advance!

    @Method:

Have you updated any drivers? I haven't. That may be why.
Also, if I remember correctly, some people complained about how with two-finger scrolling fingers had to be perfectly placed, and others had no problem. This, and the fact that I had no problem on any laptops at Fry's makes me think that the touchpads aren't all consistent.

Edit: Also, when I tap to click, it sounds like the touchpad is a little loose, as it has a sharp hollow rattle type sound if I tap it hard enough (which isn't that hard, but if I tap it really lightly I don' hear it). I don't seem to have any other problems with my computer, though, but I haven't thoroughly looked.

Upon inspection, I see that the left shift key wasn't put in correctly. :( It'll be annoying, but it could be worse.

Also, how can I increase the tap to click sensitivity? It's absolutely abysmal...

Yeah, if I could increase the tap to click sensitivity, then I wouldn't have to tap hard enough to make that sound. I'm definitely going to look for this later, but right now I'm creating the recovery discs (almost done).

So, what have you done so far?

God, I love this backlit keybaord! Every laptop I get from this day forward requires one. :D

Got mine this morning. I'm currently in the process of setting it up. The system has the following config:

    • Intel(R) Core i7-720QM Quad
    • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 Graphics Processors
    • 4GB DDR3 System Memory
    • 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
    • TouchScreen
    • Blu-ray ROM
    • Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
    • Backlit Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader

A few observations for those still waiting or deciding whether to purchase one:

-Build quality is outstanding. Better than I expected even after having looked at the demo models at Best Buy.
-I was led to believe I would be getting a Hitachi hard drive, and was thus prepared to order a WD Scorpio Black and auction off the OEM drive. Imagine my surprise to find that the system shipped with the Scorpio Black already installed. Bravo, HP.
-The system is abysmally slow out of the box. After the fourth reboot I was still getting dialog boxes for new HP programs that wanted to configure themselves. Screw that. I'll have a better idea of how it runs when I get it set up with a fresh install.
-Touch screen is cool but we'll see how much actual use I get out of it. Planning to try it in Starcraft 2 tonight.
-I got a Zalman NC-2000 cooling pad to go with it. I'm glad I didn't get the 1000 or 1500. The 2000 is a near perfect fit, overlapping maybe 3/8 of an inch in either direction- enough that it looks and feels completely stable.

I'll post a full review (along with pictures) tomorrow whenever I have time. Cheers!

Wow, my SSD only takes 18 seconds to boot (timed to when my desktop appeared), and the only thing I've done is disabled login. I'm going to do a minimized image recovery soon, and other stuff to optimize boot time.

I agree. The backlit keyboard is indeed a nice touch, but for some reason on mine the left side of the keyboard (WASD and below) is dimmer than the other side. Upon closer inspection, the black slate (is that what it is?) the keyboard rests on is sticking up slightly on the left slide and some light bleeds out the bottom. If I push it down, the board brightens to where it should normally be. :( Kinda annoying, but still functions.

(I tried TF2 with an i5 450 and the 5650, all settings high without AA seemed to flow pretty nicely)

BTW i got the fingerprint reader and not the backlit, didn't order any of those (bisedes they come as a combo no?)
As far i can't see any problem on this beauty.
    Gonna post some pictures later.

All dv6 select editions, including even preconfigured ones, have the fingerprint reader.

I still can't get over the build quality of this thing. I mean, I actually did find a small dent on the lid, but I'm still blown away. Makes me think that Apple might not be full of it after all. :D

I believe the fingerprint reader is standard to the design. However, you do have to hand over an extra $25 if you want the backlit keyboard, which explains why you only got the fingerprint reader. I do not believe they are a combo (although the configuration page lists the fingerprint reader and the backlit keyboard together as a part of the $25 upgrade). Can anyone else confirm this?

EDIT: Never mind confirming this. City_Pig beat me to it.

Hello all, just purchased my system today via HP.com.

    *Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Quad Core processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8 GHz
*1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 Graphics [HDMI, VGA] - For Quad Core Processors
    *8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
*500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
*One 6 Cell (standard) and One 9 Cell (over-sized) Lithium Ion Battery
*15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
*TouchScreen with HP TouchSmart's intuitive multi-touch applications (includes HP TrueVision Webcam)
*Blu-ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    *Intel Wireless-N Card
    *Backlit Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader

Will be using this computer mainly for architecture school - Office, Adobe and Autodesk (CAD/Revit/3DSMax) applications.

This computer should be able to hang better than most, correct?

I was going to go with the Envy 14, but after discounts, was able to get this model for just under $1500 direct from the site.

What do you guys think, did I do alright?

Also, how long did it take on average for you all to receive your systems? HP is telling me the build date isn't until the 9th of September :(

I recommend checking out the drivers and making sure you have the latest BIOS, Video, and Trackpad ones, the Audio actuall made my speakers not function at all so I had to rollback to the previous driver which works great.

As for the clicking sound on the trackpad when you tap it, Mine also sounded a little spaces like it was hitting a thin sheet of metal, though this stopped after some use and I think it is just the pad getting settled.

There is a trackpad how to in the guide from my sig, also a third party program from google that works good if you want to have a right click option using the pad while not actually having to click it.

I will come back and edit this post to answer this question, it is one of the HP startup programs that you should disable.

You will more than likely be holding your DV6T SE Box on the 9th. HP tends to have their laptops reach you on that date, however they cover their butts by giving a ship date a week later just in case there are delays.

OK I did a minimized image recovery, which seems to have worked great.

Now, should I uninstall all MediaSmart stuff? Or are there a couple I should keep. There are nine MediaSmart programs. And is HP Quicklaunch that pre-Windows 7 thing? I can uninstall that, right?

would i have been better off with the 6g or ram and a 160ssd than 8g of ram and the 500g sata?

Go for space for now, 160gb runs out fast, and its not the fastest ssd so you're not really experiencing "true ssd". Wait till Crucial's realssd 256gb price goes down to $100.

On a side note, 2.0 can you make the first post of this thread to:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...ect-edition-owners-lounge-17.html#post6368001

As justinw already has great links there and officially started this thread but it got mixed up after the beginning of the thread.

I called them and said that I wouldn't be able to afford the jump in price of the graphics card, and asked if there was a coupon they could give me to bring the price down, and was givent he $50 off.

P.S. - Sorry I took so long to reply. I was just at a 30 Seconds to Mars concert, which was great by the way :D

Agreed. The build quality is excellent.

Argh you're making me regret getting the ssd. i could have gone with the bluray and 8 gb of ram or bluray and touchscreen had I not gotten the ssd. I probably won't even use my 6gb of RAM, nor would the touchscreen be important, but the bluray would be nice. And I'm already down to 88.4gb of space left. I think I'm going to delete the recovery partition, which will add about 20gb of space.

    A couple more random observations:
    - The keyboard is VERY nice to type on. Its not loud at all, the keys are soft and smooth, and they rebound well.
    - The right trackpad button takes about 1.5 times the pressure that the left button requires for the click to register

Anyone else have a problem where when the tap to click, the cursor jumps downward a couple inches?
And whenever I scroll (with two-finger scrolling) it jumps up as I'm scrolling down and vice versa, before scrolling in the direction I want (I do have it set to scroll 1 line). It's fairly laggy, too. My drivers are supposedly up to date.

Edit: And now, suddenly, it's having trouble recognizing two-finger scrolling.

Out of blatant curiosity, does anyone know of any return policy with the DV6T? Like, if one wasn't completely satisfied, etc. My main concern is if there was a required registration and/or if it is valid in Europe (among the other info).

I know you have a 21-day return window. However, I am not sure of the details and would like to learn some more as well. While I don't anticipate having to return it, I would like to know how this works in case there are some defects with my build.

It's 21 days from date of delivery. No "questions" asked. HP send you a box and pays return shipping.

    Hey guys,

So when I first got my laptop out of the box, the CPU would run at a max of 8-9% capacity while idling or using internet, now that has increased to about 14% average. Should I be worried? Love the computer btw, took it to school yesterday, people looked jealous! hahah

Not sure where you are getting your SSD info, but the HP DV6tSE ships with an Intel X-25 G2 SSD. It's rated as one of the best SSDs out there.... and considering it in context of the original question, nothing uses 8gb of RAM right now, and for a pure speed upgrade, 6gb + SSD would kick the junk outta 500gb 7200 RPM drive + 8gb.

this is torture waiting for this thing...i'm half tempted to call them up and switch to 2-day shipping, i'm so damn anxious!

hope this machine blows my macbook out of the water.

2.4ghz intel duo + 4gb ram compared to the hp thats going to have 8gb ram + i7 720qm.

*edit*...they won't let me! said i'd have to cancel the order, get a refund, and then complete the order again. i said screw it.

guess i'll just have to patiently wait :(
