I haven't heard of any problems with the metal backing before. Also, you can return any HP laptop for any reason within 21 days of when you received it, so if they are going to charge you to fix the screen, I would just return it instead. I might even just return it and rebuy it if they need to fix the screen at all.

I'm pretty sure you can buy a screen and replace it yourself if you want, but I'm not sure where you can get a screen.

Will they take it back with the screen messed up? Would they except it like this?

I believe the accept returns within 21 days for any reason at all. Maybe if you broke it they don't accept it, though. I know you can say that you just don't like the computer and want to return it, and they allow you to. That's what I did; I just said that I didn't like the screen.

might be a stupid question, but if i received my laptop on the 9th last week, should it be up to date with all the drivers?

first impressions, seems the computer is a bit laggy. quite disappointing considering this is the fastest computer i've bought to date. i feel like my macbook 13" (not even a pro version) was faster than this model...

any ideas what could be causing that? i've even uninstalled a few of the bloatware programs.

    1gb video
    i7 720 processor
    500 gb 7200 rpm harddrive

Start menu -> msconfig > start-up > remove anything you dont use
    Change battery profile to high-performance

If your good with computers try doing a clean install

When doing gaming, lift the back of the laptop a bit (for ventilation)

And hp installs a lot of programs that run in the background, tone control etc

These cause lag as they wanna mess with every other running app

    Hopefully this will help :)

i saw on the out of the box guide, they had 3 links for a download of win 7 64 bit...have you tried those, are they legit? i didn't get a win 7 disc with my laptop, only a recovery disc.

    yes they are legit

but they require you to have a cd key

you will have to backup the current operating system key (its in the out of box guide) and then restore it after installing the new OS

*off the record* you can download preactivated versions from torrents

Don't format unless you are sure you can install all the drivers (its a pain)

but will increase your performance a lot :)

Try putting your laptop on high performance that usually does the trick

i still have the problem and still have not got answer from guarantee service, i hope i get it this week.

The Problem: different games freezes after 10-20 seconds of playing (BF2, BF:BC2 GTA4) i tried to make clean windows install, download latest video card drivers from Hp official page, update bios. nothing helps. In BF2 with INTEL graphics it runs great. with ati5650 graphics freezes. In addition screen bllincs/artefacts on desktop when idle. Laptop is not overheating, i monitor teperature and its normal. no, i have not found googlest any information or similar problem
    i\m not overclocking

i found out this problem as soon as i bought notebook and at home tested first game. the problem is with graphics i believe, not with cpu. i monitored temps and it freezes when cpu was below 60c. it freezes even it is in idle withoud load (desktop), but not so often. with intel graphics it never freezes.

    try using system restore

you must have installed something that is interfering with windows

    try installing another anti-virus

    worst case do a recovery

So if I wanted to play a game using two external monitors and the latop screen (3 total), will it work with ATI's catalyst software? Or would there be some timing issues?

If it doesn't work, could i still play games using only the two external monitors without having timing issues?

You can hook up to 2 additional monitor but they would be separate screens with barely any problems.

There is no support for eyeinfinity for the dv6 series. You can opt for the envy series for it.

So in case anyone is interested, a computer with my specs gets a 5.9 on the windows experience score and thats because of the HD, which is kinda disappointing.

Got my DV6 today, still doing all the preliminary jazz. Has anyone bought a sleeve for this laptop? I'm looking to get one so I can take it to school, but from what I've read, a lot of the 15.6" laptop sleeves don't actually fit 15.6" laptops. Any suggestions?

Also, is it necessary to use the drivers on HP's site for the graphics card, or can we get them directly from ATI?

Depends if you got switchables or not?

    Not: ATI directly is ok

Otherwise, from HP is a wiser simpler choice.

    Alright, I have switchable graphics.

Today I finally finished cleaning up everything in order to get back as much space as possible. I removed all the HP bloatware, delete the recovery partition, deleted a folder containing installers for all the HP bloatware which took up over 3 gigs, disabled system restore and hibernate and now I have 131GBs free of 148GBs. The windows folder is taking up 13GBs, which means somewhere there is 4GBs floating free that I can't find. I think it might be the page file, but Windows says it's almost 6GBs, and there's only 4GBs of space left... Regardless, it's still pretty good.

A Media Access Control address (MAC address) is a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communications on the physical network segment. Logically, MAC addresses are used in the Media Access Control protocol sub-layer of the OSI reference model.
MAC addresses are most often assigned by the manufacturer of a network interface card (NIC) and are stored in its hardware, the card's read-only memory, or some other firmware mechanism. If assigned by the manufacturer, a MAC address usually encodes the manufacturer's registered identification number. It may also be known as an Ethernet hardware address (EHA), hardware address, adapter address, or physical address.

@icechelsea Well you wouldnt be able to connect all six speakers to the laptop directly, however you can connect the speakers to a home theater system, and then connect your laptop to the home theater system via hdmi, and you should be able to use 5.1.

    Anybody having this problem?

When I put the computer to sleep while plugged, and unplug it and wake it up, the system asks me if i want to switch to intel graphics. I select yes, and screen goes fully blank, nothing happening. So i have to close the screen put the computer to sleep, open the screen and wake it, and login, and the graphic cards are switched.

    Anybody having the same issue?

    Any known fixes?

    Thanks.

That sounds like it should work, but I thought earlier in this thread someone was saying they couldn't get 5.1 surround sound to work on it. Maybe I'm thinking about a different laptop or they figured it out, however.

I haven't had this problem. I do remember some people having problems relating to graphics and/or waking up from sleep. Do you have the latest drivers? Oh, maybe it was a BIOS update that fixed the problem, but that might have been a different problem.

Sorry, all this is based on stuff I read a while ago in this thread so I'm not sure about anything.

You got 2 updates that resolve that problem, you can use either an updated ATI driver from hp or update the bios at least F09 or higher.

The first problem I had when I first opened my dv6 back in early june.

@MethodtotheMadness thanks for your quick response. Should the home theater system have a HDMI port? what kind of a cable would I need? :S Sorry about the newbie questions but I'm completely unfamiliar with HDMI and stuff.

^ Look in the information guide

No, this laptop supports up to 7.1 via HDMI. Though you need to switch to ATI in order for it to work.

I don't know what kind of system you have - whether it's just a speaker system with a couple of inputs or an A/V Receiver.

I have an AV receiver so I just plug the end from my laptop to the receiver and have one cable go out to my TV (which in this case is my PC monitor).

Unfortunately, there isn't really any other option for outputting 5.1+ sound so HDMI is really your only choice.

Well I still don't have one, but I'll definitely buy one when I get home, so that's why I'm asking. It will probably be a 5.1 Surround system sth like this:
Amazon.com: Yamaha NS-SP1800BL 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker Package: Electronics

by the way, is everybody's dv6t se warm on the touch on the left palm rest area? Mine is warm, not extremely hot but warm, and I don't like that, the CPU temperature, however is around 50C :S ... I have the i5-450m CPU, ATI 5650 VGA, 6GB RAM, 160 SSD and Touchscreen...

The left palmrest where the 5650 is (HP is great at designing the interior of laptops, huh?), so the only way to keep it from being warm is to run on integrated graphics. It's no danger, though.

That CPU temp is a bit high for idle or just browsing, though. Did you just get it? Sometimes the temps are higher for the first week but then come down later.

The 5650 is around your caps lock / tab key and sometimes I can feel the heat spread to my palm rest, but sometimes not. I dunno, the heat generated in that area is a mystery. Sometimes it'll warm up around my palm rest, but not around the keys. Other times I'll play starcraft 2 or another system intensive game and my fan will barely run at all and the computer will be at 80-90*c and gpu at 60*c. This machine is a crapshoot, but I still love it.

There's also another chip directly under your palm rest with no heat sinks or anything on it, but it still has a vent. I tried to stick one of those vga heat sinks on it, but nothing good came out of it. Thus far, I've only enlarged the cpu vent hole and made another one for the gpu lol.

I was thinking of the same thing. I think it was on this forum, but I'm not sure. Anyway, the guy who asked about it said that he was able to select 5.1 surround sound when using his 360, but his dv6tse only allowed for 2-channel sound. From what he said, I think this was because he was trying to output 5.1 through his tv, which only supported 2-channel, and he didn't have a home theater system. The laptop didn't allow for 5.1 to be selected like the 360 did because the laptop is "smarter" than the 360.

Yes, the home theater system would need an HDMI port, and you would thus need HDMI cables to use it. You would need at least two. One to connect your system to your tv, and one to connect your laptop to your system. You don't necessarily NEED to connect your system to your tv, but I doubt most people would buy a home theater system to only use for audio output from their laptop, lol. I have a home theater system that I think is just an older generation of this system: HT-SS370 | 5.1-channel Surround Sound System | Sony | Sony Style USA
For $350 the sound on mine is excellent. The bass is good on it's normal settings, and can be raised or lowered if you'd like.

EDIT: Woops. I just looked at the link you posted. Well if you can afford the $350 Sony system, I'd recommend it. The system you linked to looks ok, but it looks like the build quality is pretty low.

Well, it looks like a fairly decent cheap set... but...

You still need an AV Receiver with that. I don't know which one you're getting but anything recent will come with an HDMI input. The lower range tends to put everything as a passthrough so you need multiple cables depending on what you're plugging in (ie composite input to composite out, component in to component out, etc). The mid range (like My Pioneer - VSX-920-K) can upconvert most every source except HDMI into 1080p and outputs it via a single HDMI cable.

Onkyo, Pioneer, Yamaha, makes quality budget AVRs and they should all have some form of HDMI input.

Basically, all you need to do is just hook up all the speakers into the AVR, make sure it works, then plug in the HDMI from your laptop to the receiver. It shouldn't take too much work.

As for the difference with buying an all in one set like the Sony vs speaker package + another AVR, it's about upgradability. The Sony set you'll be stuck with and you can't upgrade it but with an AVR you can add or replace different speakers if need be. And as for speaker sets, I'm recommending the Polk RM705, though I don't even know your budget.

And the warm palmrest - yeah, that's a notable "feature" :p
