has anyone tried to clean the screen frame? (the glossy part of the laptop). I am asking because I tried to clean it with a soft and little wet cloth and I ended up having a few scratches on it, which ofc won't leave.

Hmm that's weird- I wonder if the screen should be cleaned with windex or isopropyl alcohol.

As for the random heat spots, remember, this laptops case is made of metal ;)

One last thing: is there a way to turn up the brightness level on the backlit keyboard? I need to be honest, it's just weak- it barely illuminates at all.

And again one last thing: when using your laptop at home, do you remove the battery when plugged in? I've heard keeping the battery in all the time will kill it faster. Confirm or deny?

The computer is supposed to be able to turn off charging of the battery or something, but I've heard different things. I just keep my battery in as a safeguard / convenience against power surges [rare] and laziness.

To be honest that looks like something is overheating on your notebook. Mine froze after extended use and while I was watching blu-ray movies. My desktop did the same the same thing when I used passive cooling on my video card.

Sent my DV6TSE back to HP. They replaced the motherboard and a cooling fan. Fedex should have it at my doorstep tomorrow. I'll see if everything goes smoothly. At least the service was speedy, less than a week!

    Claude

PS Anyone ever take their DV6TSE apart? If yes, how easy?

I just received my dv6t se three days ago and have been trying to figure out why this core i7 temperature is running so hot
the core temps on hwmonitor jump up to around 65-75 while it's idling plugged in and stays at that level causing the fan to run max speed, but it doesn't seem to cool it

I'm not even sure if the i7 quad is the culprit
I uninstalled the ATI driver and catalyst software to see if that was the cause and it seemed to keep my cpu core temps at around 45-55
Whenever I reinstall the catalyst software, the heat starts rising and the fan starts spinning fast
Also, running on batteries seems to cool the computer a slight bit and the temperatures come down to around 60-65
Connecting an external source through HDMI causes the heat to build up as well

Do I have a lemon or is this kind of overheating normal for the i7? If it's normal, its quite unbearable...

Hey guys, I got this laptop with the i5 with the 2.4 and turbo to 2.66 (i5 450?). A couple questions please

    1. My laptop takes forever to install programs, and for example opening HP games takes about a minute to open..is this normal?

    2. Is turbo boost supposed to be listed in the system properties page? thanks

    1. You need to get rid of the bloatware. It's bogging you down. This guide has your options. http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-hp-laptop-out-box-guide-2-0-windows-7-a.html In addition, there's an option known as minimized image recovery, mentioned here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...8-explanation-different-recovery-options.html

    2. No, it's not.

Wrong thread. This thread is only for dv6-3000 Select Edition series models. You can either make your own thread or bump this one.

Give it a week. If the problem doesn't resolve itself by then, you probably have a lemon.

I have had my laptop for about two weeks now and no problems so far. The keyboard took me a while to get adjusted to but it's all good now.

One quick question: Does anyone know what is the best way to clean this type of keyboard? The matte keys are getting a bit dirty (fingerprints, etc).

Just temped my DV6 with HWmonitor. The CPU is idling at around 37-38C, the ATI gpu is idling at around 48C. I loaded up CS:S and played for about 5 minutes. The fan kicked on and started racing, GPU temps went to a high of 81C and cpu temps went to a high of 82C. Thoughts?

Well I've disassembled it through the point at which the metal surface around the keyboard and trackpad is removed. It was very easy with the directions available on HP's website here: Manuals for HP Pavilion dv6t-3000 CTO Select Edition Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English). Just click the first link on the page. It should say "Maintenance and Service Guide".

P.S. - MAKE SURE YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHICH SCREWS GO WHERE. I took apart my laptop a couple times, and I don't think I ended up putting all of the screws where they belong.

fan seems to be running a bit louder than i would expect today, and i'm doing nothing more than browsing and taking notes on office 2007 in class...

coretemp says all cores are around 61-64 degrees C.

    thoughts?

it will be quite for about 5 seconds, and then rev up for about 5 seconds...very weird.

are you in the 21 day return policy?

I don't think there should be a problem, it may be that fan kicks in at 60 degrees
it must be jumping between 59-61?

It has i3 and doesnt have the 5650 graphic card + its refurbished

You could get a new i3 with a 5650 for a little more

For $600? If it meets your needs it's just fine. If you plan on gaming, though, it's pretty bad.

DigitalPersona, the company that makes the drivers has said that it will support chrome if chrome gets a greater market share

it only supports firefox + internet explorer (they own like 80% of the browsing market)

=/ Wait for them or some free lancer to make an add-on

to me, it just doesn't seem like i'm doing enough to have the fan kick on.

my i7 is running hot as ive mentioned before
mine is just lurking around the 65-75 range for no reason other than idling or browsing
the only way to make it stop the high temperature is uninstalling the ATI driver and catalyst software
that somehow keeps my temperature at 45-50 idle
i dont like the way this i7 is working...
might have to return this as i can not bear an unstable computer

I'm not really sure you have a problem

but still, you can try updating your bios, graphic card, uninstalling bloatware

    try removing startup programs

go to run > msconfig > startup

try tweaking your windows 7 services (google it)

    and then check again?

The i5's limit is also 105C. (And based on my laptop, it would have extreme throttling issues if it were 90C.) I think you're thinking of the i3.

I've tried all of the coupons but $945 is the lowest that I can get after tax. Unfortunately it is far above my $650 budget. I think the $600 refurbished one will have to do. Thanks for the advice as it got me to exhaust all of the possible deals out there.

I figured the video drivers on hp's site would be combined into one installer package, but they're just two separate installers. How did you guys install the drivers? I was going to uninstall the old ones with revo, and then install the new ones. I'm just unsure whether or not I will screw up the ability to switch between the two if I don't do it correctly.

I read a review that complained that since parts of the laptop are glossy like that they attract fingerprints and stuff, but then if you try to clean it it gets scratched.

Hey guys, I just got my dv6tse with an i5 450 yesterday, and it takes forever to install programs and takes forever to open some programs such as "Play HP Games". Someone told me that to make my computer faster I should remove the bloatware, can I get a second opinion on this? I find it weird they would put so much bloat on it that it would slow it down.

Take a look at your task manager. There are about 80 processes running, aren't there?

And, really, get rid of HP Games ASAP. It's one of the worst offenders.

Just to put some things into perspective about the heat of our laptop, some better equipped other brands run as hot as 80+ cpu/gpu while gaming and such. Something wrong with that.

When I uninstall the ATI drivers and catalyst software, the laptop keeps reverting back to an old driver dated 1/22/10, but the catalyst software is uninstalled completely. This somehow allows my CPU to stay cool at around 45-50 at idle or browsing and the GPU stays a bit cooler as well. I really think HP focked this up for the i7s... perhaps because our ATI 5650 is not switchable, but I fear there are many i7s with this problem.

    Hi Guys:

Got my ailing DV6TSE back from HP. Report states that a cooling fan and a motherboard was replaced. I've been running on batteries using the Intel HD graphics for over three hours now without any problems. At least for a large screen notebook, it does have decent battery life. Will try running plugged in with the ATI 5650 and see how it goes. Turn around time inlcuding shipping has been less than a week, which is excellent.

I would recommend that you try it and see if this has the same effect on your computer. If it does, then I would assume this could be a systematic defect in the i7 builds.
