Really, the battery being like that is nothing to worry about unless you're really nit-picky. I mean, it's under the computer. It's like being upset about a scratch on the bottom...

It depends on what you're doing, but the difference won't be noticeable for everyday usage at all, and rarely noticeable in gaming (depends on the game).

I'll be using it for music production. Right now I have a sony vaio with 3gb of ram and a pentium dual core T3200 at 2.0ghz, and its really really bad when i start loading up cpu intensive plugins. So I'm assuming the highest i5 would be better at handling this sort of thing than the lowest i5...

There are lower i5s than the 460M; just not as options on this laptop anymore. Either way, the 460M runs circles around the T3200 (probably at least twice as fast, if not far more), so it should be able to handle it well enough. Still, better safe than sorry if the extra cost isn't that big of an issue.

IIRC, somewhere in the 3820TG threads, someone mentioned that the 450M should be all that you need because it has the "most overclocking potential/headroom," due to the "(higher) number of multipliers" ?? Something like that. Sounds good to me, as most games/tasks are doable with the 430M anyhow. Just get the cheapest of the i5-4x0m cpus.

How do you tell what battery you have? I've got the 3032tx.
Also whenever I hibernate or sleep and log back on and try and adjust the brightness with the keys nothing happens, nor when i go into power options so it's stuck on that brightness till I shutdown. :S

So if i'm in full screen and some app kicks me out repeatedly but i can't find out what it is.... is there a program that will identify it for me? I'm getting really annoyed of being kicked out of full screen things like videos and games lately. Thanks guys!

Open a full screen video, open the task manager and keep it on top of the fullscreen video.

Arrange processes by the amount of CPU they are using.

As soon as the fullscreen is interrupted, look which process suddenly used the cpu. Might help.

gauging based on cpu usage won't help much.

I know MPC tells which app lost its focus to.
works well unless the app took focus and closed.

For the battery, you can cross reference the part number on the battery itself with the parts you can order from the HP website.

As for the brightness keys not really working, I have the same issue. They don't respond when I have my 5650 on, but 90% of the time they'll function if I start up with the IGP. Not that annoying to me really, I just click the battery icon and adjust brightness.

Considering popping a i5 580m into my dv6. Should be fun.

Fun fact: With my IGP on and in power saver, my computer is running at 17*C lol. Hope everyone's still enjoying their Dv6t's.

What are your needs? If you're only gaming, then get the 580M--it might actually run cooler than the quad. If you're a "video/music/photo" editor, as tons of people claim a quad is required for, then get the 720qm. Personally, I'd get whichever is cheaper. Many ppl make it seem like the i5-450m is all you'd ever need for everything up through gaming.

My question to you all: do I need the "HP Software Framework" installed for anything? And what about the "HP Power Manager?" I know what HP Driveguard, Quick Launch and Simplepass do. But not what the other two do. Also, if I'm going to be using bluray, do I need the HP Media Smart thing installed or can I use MPCHC or another third party program?

You can use other players for blueray.

    HP Software Framework - optional
    HP Power Manager - optional

Anyways as for temps, some major factors could be system and surrounding environment, cleanliness of the laptop.

Wipe and quickly dry the laptop surface.
I clean my vents every month with a simple blast of air.
You be surprised what get sucked up there from campus tables.

Once my warranty expires, I plan to disassemble to remove the hairs that get caught or other things that are a bit more difficult to remove.

I would contact HP. I say this because, I have the same laptop of course, and I have yet to see mine spike past 80*C while playing HL2, and photoshop running in the back ground.

Is the laptop on your lap, on your bed, or is it on a desk with nothing blocking the vents? I also have the 9-cell battery which does elevate the back of the laptop and give the fan lots of room to cool.

    1-800-HPINVENT.... :(

Mine regularly reaches 80 Celsius while playing LFD2, both processor and gpu. I've owned it for about 4 months now, and it is used on a solid desk with the expanded battery, so it has plenty of airflow.

Yeah, but I havn't tested it hard yet. Only like firefox + Dead Rising 2 and it was at 70-75. It's pretty new though so I'm sure the paste will drain its effectiveness and the dust buildup will be present.

I'm surprised your i5 is throttling though. :|

I'm not sure that it is. I was play L4D2, which is ridiculously buggy anyway. The frame rate drops could just be due to poor programming. They weren't big drops anyway. The lowest I saw was 38FPS. The average is about 50, though it used to be 55-60...

My notebook hard locked on me yesterday while running Adobe Updater - running BIOS F.09 A, clean installation of 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate... would it be worth it to try updating the BIOS to F.12 A? I dont see anything in the release notes that states it fixes anything, just adds support for new notebook models.

And if I flash to F.12 A, can I flash back to F.09 A if need be?

    Thanks

So I broke my laptop a while back, HP called me and told me that the thermal paste I used caused the issue of frying my CPU and Graphics card.. I used ICE Diamond.. which is non-conductive so I don't know how I could've harmed anything.. Then they told me that there was water in my laptop... ANDDDDD then they told me I put wrong screws into my laptop which cracked the motherboard. They now want to charge me $750 to fix the laptop which replaces everything inside.... I'm pretty sure my memory and HD still works.. although I can't test this out.. Any1 know how I can test my HD and memory? I know for a fact I didn't spill any water in my laptop because it still powers on but the screen is black. Any ideas how I can save them from ripping me off?

Is there a way I can make it so that the left click and right click buttons on my touchpad aren't included as a way for me to move my mouse? I find that often when I go to hit the right click button the pointer likes to jump to another part of the screen due to the entire touchpad being movement sensitive and its a pain in the sometimes.

Hai guyz. Is anyone else having problems with intermittent wireless signal? Like, the icon in the lower right always shows me I'm connected, yet it'll randomly hang for a solid minute or two, load slowly-fast and then hang again. It has been doing this for the last week. I'm thinking it may actually be my ISP going wonky, but is there anyway to tell exactly what is causing internet/wireless related issues (like, my side as opposed to ISP-side)

I love this forum, very helpful. I actually discovered after I already purchased my DV6Tse. I purchased on Oct. 21, build date was supposed to be Nov 4 but according to the tracking it is estimated to be here Nov 2, woohoo! I don't really know a whole lot about computers in general as far as what specs to go with but I talked to some people who did before buying this guy. I am planning to do plenty of video editing (although not HD at the moment, possibly in the future however) so that was my reason for going with the specs I did.

Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Quad Core processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8 GHz
    • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA] - For Dual Core Processors
    • FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 640GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • Microsoft(R) Office Starter 2010
    • No additional security software
