Ok downloaded it, restarted the computer, still not working. There is an 'X' over the sound icon at the bottom of the screen and it says "Audio Device disabled" when I did the troubleshooting. How do I enable it?

Did you run the installer, or just download it? (I know it's a stupid question, but I want to be thorough.) And did you uninstall the old driver first?

I did run the installer and rebooted, however I did not know to uninstall the old driver, how do I do that? (btw, why couldn't HP get something as simple as putting sound on a laptop?? i'm very disappointed with that)

Also make sure your windows sound sounds services active. It's possible they are in the 'stopped' or 'disabled' state.

I don't know why I'm reading 4 core temps! Temp 1 is the Graphics card, but why I'm reading core2 & 3 is a mystery to me...I'm using speedfan 4.41

SpeedFan does that with me too. Just use CoreTemp or HWMonitor.

Ok I chatted with a live HP person and for some reason the link he gave me for the sound driver worked even though I tried to install that driver twice before. So YAY I have sound now!!!

Bigfoot- my Speedfan temps were insanely lower than my HWmonitor temps. I think that your temps may be higher than you believe.

Does anyone think the i7-640 will work? I want to load in the fastest dual core chip.

Was looking at the 580m but the 640 is 4mb L3 cache and 2.8ghz... Yummy. Its the same TDP as teh 580m so I would think it should work without a hitch. I know in my DV2000 which never had anything over a TL-60 in it took a TL-66 just fine. That was a kick upgrade, I had a TL-50 in there to start :)

ok guys i really need some help.

I have shutdown and restarted my computer over 6 times now trying to figure out why my brand new laptop is getting smoked by my 5 yr old xp one....i have taken the fastest of the 6 times...

the time it takes me to hit the power button and get to the user login screen for windows- 03:12

the time it takes for me to swipe my fingerprint and for the computer to be ready and for that blue circle to dissapear so i can actually double click on a program- 01:16

i launched firefox everytime but then the time it takes for my laptop to connect to my wireless network- 01:03

total time 5 minutes and 31 seconds since i hit the power button until i get online.......i have got to be doing something wrong or the computer has got to be faulty, there is no way this is the best performance.....

i used cc cleaner to remove some stuff and it didnt affect anything.

what ever happened to the quick web stuff, where i can launch it without launching windows?

once again, the basic specs are core i5, 6 gb ram, 640 gb hdd.

there has got to be something i can do, this laptop isnt even a week old

and by the way my 2gb ram, 1.4 ghz 120 gb hdd 4 yr old xp laptop takes 02:38 for the same process....

I've downloaded Hardware Monitor and the temps for the GPU and hard drive are the same except for core temps speed fan says they are between 72F-68F and HW monitor says they are 102F and 91F so there is a difference but which one do you go with?

I go with HWmonitor temps. I believe those to be more accurate. If your computer has temps of 72-68 F, it has better air conditioning than my car! Lol.

You really need to do a clean install. It sounds like something is wrong with either the laptop or your Windows installation. This guide should help you with the clean install and show you how to recover your drivers. http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-hp-laptop-out-box-guide-2-0-windows-7-a.html

If that doesn't work, your laptop is defective and you need to either get it replaced or return it altogether.

Theoretically, which should push the CPU to higher temps, an hour of Left 4 Dead 2 or 30 minutes of fullscreen FurMark benchmarking? Keep in mind that Left 4 Dead 2 goes on a loading screen every 15-20 mins or so for about a minute each time.

That's actually pretty cool. Now I have an idea for my next lappy lolz. Originally, I wanted to throw on some of the Faux Leather liner on it, but now that I look at the CF, maybe I'll do both? :) Riced out lappies ftw, perhaps? LOLZ

FurMark with all of the options turned on... if you want to really stress your machine out, let it run IntelBurnTest at maximum + FurMark on max settings, native resolution for an hour straight...

Thanks, but that's not quite it. I asked because I need an explanation for the exact opposite of that happening. FurMark bought my CPU to 83C, but L4D2 brings it anywhere from 88C-93C in 1-2 hours.

    I don't have it.

The HDD LED indicator is on the right side of the laptop between the power LED and the USB port toward the back.

Ok I see it on the side over there! What a dumb place to put it where it can't be seen unless you turn the computer around sideways!! It's important to me at certain times to be able to see if the computer boots up and doesn't have a display etc.
I did download a activity monitor though where I can see what the HD is doing called "Float Led" 1.07 Don't know if I'll keep it but I'm giving it a try.

So, maxing out IntelBurnTest and FurMark at the same time is a very bad idea. It took about 7 minutes to reach 99C...

What is the ambient temperature where you are? I was able to pull off that combination for an hour straight with my machine maxing out around 91*C for the CPU, 74*C for the GPU.

It's actually pretty cold here. I highly doubt that that has anything to do with it, especially given that it cools back down to 35-40C in about five minutes. There's poor contact between the heatsink and at least one of the CPU cores. (I say at least one because only one gives high readings while the other is always significantly less. However, the lower reading is probably just wrong.) That's the only explanation I can think of.

If you game on it and you want to be sure it lasts, then maybe. I would have sent it in already if it weren't for the fact that I need it and I know it could possibly take well over a month to get it back without the problem even being fixed.

I got bored during the night and decided to rip up the space bar from my keyboard. Lo and behold, there's a metal slide rod type mechanism under there. So I added some grease to the sliding rod and...the squeaking sort of went away! Now I just gotta get some thicker stuff, but I think this cured it. I read about some guys spraying wd40 and electronics cleaner stuff on their keyboards, but that just sounded wrong. So if you have a squeaky space bar, give this a try.

Update: I've been hammering away on my greased space bar typing notes this morning and haven't heard a squeak yet. If you have a squeaky key, maybe give this fix a try? I used lithium grease that's supposed to be used for brake caliper sliders cause that's all i had.

not sure what you mean by mapping network drives, im not that prevelant in computers so i would hate to mess things up evenmore

but i am completely with you in that this laptop should take at the most one minute from the time i hit the power button to the time i can actually run a program....oh well. i'll keep looking for solutions.

Trust me, it's pointless. If you activate it, it boots before Windows automatically, meaning it actually slows you down when you want to get into Windows. That and the fact that Windows is ready to use in about a minute makes me feel that it's just gimmicky bloatware.

im having a little trouble with this driver thing. everytime i go to get one the hp website is telling me that the drivers are up to date.

so if thats the case why is it a crapshoot whether or not my touchscreen and fingerprint reader will work when i boot up my computer?

anything else i can do to this fixed, also is there anything i can do to get vertical scrolling, and multi touch support (finger gestures etc.) on my trackpad?

I got my DV6 today and I don't know if I'm in the correct Forum. It has Backlit Keyboard; Finger Print Reader; AMD Phenom II Quad; 6 GB; 64-Bit; 4.1 Index...

I see references to DV6t and DV6 Select and Artist. How do I tell which I have, or is there a difference between 6, 6t, select? Thanks all!

Just a note to all prospective purchaser's of a DV6 Special Edition notebook.
A few additions to your new machine that would make your purchase more enjoyable would be the 7200 rpm HD, bluetooth, back-lite keyboard, the cost of these items are minimal and would be much appreciated in time. I know I'm pleased with with those small changes to my order.

A clean install is really your best bet here. If you really don't want to do one, then return it while you can because there's no reason to put up with those boot times.
