Here's a question concerning the ATI card and drivers in this machine: is it possible to force (as with nVidia drivers) AA and such at the driver level? Also, can I force the driver to NOT stretch the image horizontally if I choose, say, a 1024x768 resolution? I can't find the options for this in the Catalyst control center. It shouldn't be this hard to find.

The option for AA is in CCC under 3D.

As for stretching, I don't know how. In games, however, it doesn't stretch.

Alas, in Audiosurf, even if I manually set it to do 1024x768 fullscreen in game, it stretches to fit the panel. With nVidia drivers you can tell them not to scale the signal, but at least with the ones that work with this laptop, there's no option to do that with ATI's drivers, by the looks of it.

    Hello guys,

    I just got a dv6t from costco...
Its configuration is i3 370m, 6gb ram, 500gb hdd, intel HD graphics..

I would like to know if i can get a graphic card installed into this since intel HD graphics is useless for gaming.....Dou know whats the VRAM that Intel HD graphics offers?
How complicated is it to install a graphic card on our own?
Can you suggest a good graphic card?

You can't install a GPU yourself, sorry. You would have to buy a motherboard with the 5650 from HP's parts store.

Integrated cards don't have their own VRAM. It borrows from the system memory. Usually, it will use 128MB, but it'll borrow more if it needs to. The max is 1.7GB, but that's just for marketing. It'll never need even close to that much.

    Hehe!

What's the exact model you have?

    There is a DV6 model with an i3 370m
    with an ATI 5650 GPU.

    The model is the DV6-3143US.

    Newegg.com - HP Pavilion dv6-3143us NoteBook Intel Core i3 370M(2.40GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

Maybe you have something similar, and just didn't do a manual
switch to the ATI 5650 GPU?

If the model you have doesn't have a discrete GPU, can you just return it for another model?

I know Costco has an excellent return/exchange policy.

If you're not satisfied with that model, which might not have an adequate GPU for your needs, then definitely consider returning it and save your money for another model.

Check Costco for another DV6 that has the ATI 5650 GPU.

Or go online. Check other DV6 models on sale at other websites.

Or just order directly from HP. HP is offering many discounts.
Lots of awesome HP coupons/codes available at numerous websites.

    Good luck!

The amount of VRAM a card has is meaningless in terms of what it can do.

@above: Laptops with ATI graphics come with a sticker indicating such.

    @ City Pig

    Good point! Hehe!

Yes, coolhydro, that's the quickest way to
verify if the model has an ATI GPU.

    @coolhydro

Besides checking for the ATI sticker, you still have
to verify if the model has an ATI 5650 GPU.

Costco (retail & website) sells also
DV6/DV7 models with ATI GPUs besides
    the ATI 5650.

    Good luck!

A box pops up asking to switch graphics when you connect/disconnect the A/C cord. You can also do it manually by right-clicking your desktop. There is no button or switch on the laptop.

    Hmmm, okay.

Well, if you're not completely satisified with your purchase
and you're looking for a laptop with a discrete GPU, you should
consider returning it to Costco and buy another one.

    Spending that amount of money,
you should be satisfied with your purchase and deserve to get your money's worth.

As I mentioned, Costco has an excellent return/exchange policy.

"No bluetooth device found. Please make sure that your bluetooth thingy is plugged in"

Thats what it says when I try to install the bluetooth drivers?

Can someone tell me a screenshot of their bluetooth in the device manager? I think mine is a hardware issue? I can't find mine in the device manager.

That would be the problem. You can't switch graphics because you have no graphics to switch to. Currently, only dual-core CPUs have an IGP.

hi guys, ive just ordered my dv6se, and ive been reading negative things about the touchpad. engadget reviewed the envy 14 and said the touchpad was an improvement on the dm4's unusable touchpad. so my question is, does the dv6 use the dm4's or the envy 14's touchpad??

Why do people post the status of where their new computer is in the delivery process? It is useless info to the forum. It's as useful a posting the ETA of the next bowel movement.

At first it was terrible, but now that I think about it, I can't notice the problems I used to have with it, meaning it's perfectly fine now, guess you just need to force yourself to use it.

    I've been testing/using a DV6 for a couple of weeks now.
I'm still deciding on which brand/model to finally keep. Hehe!

I haven't been bothered at all when the touchpad is active and used,
be it for general usage (while typing, web browsing, etc.)
or playing games (certain times I use the touchpad, other times
touchpad is easily disabled, then I use a mouse).

I especially like that nice feature where you can completely disable
the touchpad, by double tapping the upper left side, when desired.

I'm quite picky regarding laptop touchpads.
So far, I like its texture, control, and movement.
Nothing has occurred so far for me that made it bothersome or erratic.
Even the left/right integrated buttons are fine during usage.

That's a luck-of-the-draw thing. While overheating is highly unlikely to happen, some (like mine) have very poorly applied thermal paste get really close to the point where they would overheat, and probably would actually overheat while gaming or benchmarking in a hot room (like that's a good idea for any computer  ). Only a few get this issue, though. It's nothing like the past issues with the defective NVidia GPUs. Just run a stress test when you get it, tell us the temperatures (as well as your room temp), and we'll tell you if you should consider asking for a replacement. Again, it's very unlikely that you will have this issue. Most stay very cool.

I just ordered mine, after waiting for the longest time for the right coupon to come along, finally dropping the price to below $799:

HP Pavilion dv6t Select Edition customizable Notebook PC
    • • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • • System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-460M Dual Core Processor (2.53 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz
    • • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA] - For Dual Core Processors
    • • FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • • 640GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • • No Additional Office Software
    • • No additional security software
    • • 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard) - Up to 5.25 hours of battery life +++
    • • 15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
    • • No TouchScreen (includes HP TrueVision Webcam)
    • • SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    • • Intel Wireless-N Card
    • • Backlit Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader
    • • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

I got this for $753.99 + tax, totaling about $799.

Just a quick question though: I decided to order the System Recovery DVD because I needed to bring the overall price to above $1099 to get the $200 coupon to work. Did anyone else get a system recovery disk from HP or did they decide to burn their own? I don't know much about these recovery disks, but should I still make one or is the HP recovery disk adequate?

Also, I was thinking of buying Symantec firewall and/or McAfee antivirus, but I don't want to spend more money than I have to. Is one of those free antivirus programs like the Microsoft Security Essentials someone mentioned enough? Or would I also need a firewall on top of that?

My current laptop has an old version of Symantec firewall and McAfee on it, which I got for free from my school, so I've never really had to buy any of this stuff. Is it completely necessary and a must-buy? Any advice would be appreciated.

I would assume the recovery disks you will get from HP will suffice, I would hope so at least!

Personally, I like Avast Anti-virus, it's free to use and a premium version is available for purchase if you so choose. Really, it all comes down to the websites you are going to and how you use the computer. If you're looking for game cracks and going to shady websites alot...I would invest in a powerful antivirus/firewall.

Hello everyone, I am planning to upgrade my RAM to 8GB (4gbX2)
The factory installed dimm is one 4GB, and I am confused which one will be the most suitable RAM in market to match with the one already inside. Ofcourse I am not considering to buy from HP.
Attached are some screen shots from CPU-Z, can anyone suggest me?

    Thanks in advance

Because you have an i7 above the 6xx range you can put in either 1066 or 1333mhz RAM.

Anywhere to find an OEM 9 cell or 12 cell battery for a price cheaper than HP. Also, is there anyway to add a backlit keyboard yourself? Got carried away on black friday and made the purchase without having those two added to my order. Even worse now is that the coupon cuts the price $50 more than black friday.

You can get the backlit keyboard from HP's Parts Store for $90. Also they make a 12 cell battery? :|

Edit: Ahhh they do make 12 cells, is this compatible with all dv6 models? How much extra batter life are we looking at compared to a 6 cell? Double?

Whaaat? $90? Compared to the $25 when configuring, that's ridiculous. Now I want to configure another one and return this one once it comes.

The touchpad is large and gets in the way sometimes. When typing I find that I accidentally highlight and erase large sections of text by somehow hitting the touch pad in one or more spots. Still not quite sure how to prevent that. It just takes getting used to.

Did you notice that the touchpad is identical in size to an iphone? try it.

You can easily turn the touch-pad on and off by double-tapping the upper left hand corner if you are going to be typing for awhile.
