you can adjust the palm touch settings on your touchpad to prevent that

    @Ady_Digital
How you managed to get a single dimm config??

The matching ram is a hit or miss, but at least you got flex memory.
Just get something that is at least your cpuz says. If you get something slower, it will drop down to a slower one.

You can say by luck :D.......... I did not even order my system online, I bought a preconfigured available at a local electronics store! This configuration is DV6-3177ee.

Regarding the matching RAM, I can find many DDR3-1333, and there are further types in this speed like PC3-10600, PC3-10666 etc.......... BUT CPU-Z says mine is PC3-10700, and I cannot find it anywhere, have tried newegg, and many other online sellers but no luck!!

You got really not much choice in that but you got intel's flex memory tech, just select anything in PC3-10600 range. The probability to get a working true dual channel is really low without investing in a kit or buy and pray pairs.

I have a dv6tSE purchased on 19Nov2010 with win7HomePremium64bit and Intel HD Graphics etc.

I have clean installed Win7Professional 64bit to get XP-Mode required by my wife for some legacy work.

    Questions:
    1. I find the display has a noticeable blue emphasis in colors. How do you load a different color profile? Where to get these profiles.
    2. Is the backlit keyboard standard? How to set it on?

In all other aspect the laptop is very satisfactory.
    Response Welcome.
    Happy Holidays.

Moved your post. The ATI 5650 cards are dedicated graphics solutions, but certain HP notebooks have the switchable graphics feature which allows you to switch between this and the integrated Intel HD Graphics (with dual-core processor models only though).

Backlight keyboards are not standard...its an optional upgrade.

To turn on a backlit keyboard on our models is there is a switch left of delete that looks like a shiny block

Hmm, one of the fans(if it has more than one?) or the fan, has stopped working it seems, or just works intermittently.. As i got a error on startup today but done a startup test and everything 'passed'. Is it possible something has come loose slightly ? & how can i get to the fan to check?

Hi everyone, I just received mine today but for family reasons I had to go away for a week with my parents, so I won´t be able to test the laptop until next weekend. Anyway I was wondering what cooler would you recommend me for the laptop, I had my eyes on the cooler master U2 but I need a second opinion on the matter.
    Thanks and good night.

That is horrible! In fact, since SpeedFan can't detect temps properly on an i5, it's probably even worse than that! Don't even think about turning on that computer until this problem is fixed!

    QFT!

I thought those temps were in Fahrenheit when I first saw the post, I didn't pay any attention to it. I've noticed Speedfan temps are considerably cooler than HWmonitor's accurate results, which, if true, means that that laptop is on the verge of cooking itself.

I've seen worse. I had an old desktop once tell me the processor was 400 degrees. It was either that or 4,000 degrees.

Either way it was really screwed up, not quite 400 (or 4,000 lol) degrees screwed up, but there were definitely some heat problems :).

All for $1,200... seems like a great deal to me. I honestly had no desire to buy an HP, but I saw one of these at Costco (with mediocre specs) and I really loved the look and feel of it. Like many have said I really wish it had a slot loading DVD, but I can live without it. How much battery life am I looking at with an i7 and the 9-cell battery? Is this the "slice" battery that everyone talks about with the ENVYs?

The dv6 series do not have the slice battery capability. Yours, I'm predicting 5 hrs under ideal conditions.

I do love the slice battery for the envy series if I had the cash, so I settled on a dv6t se :p. Those can go 8+ hours on battery and without the bumps on similar specs.

    For Canadians:

There was a deal that started yesterday, dv6-3090ca for $799 (@ London Drugs)! Original price was ~12 hundred I think.

Rough specs are i7 720QM(1.60GHz), 15.6", 6GB Memory, 500GB HDD 5400rpm, DVD Super Multi, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650.

It seems kinda suspicious though, this is a new line of laptops, why sell it so cheap suddenly? Maybe there's flaw or some defect that's been found.

Whenever I Hibernate or standby my computer with a youtube video open and turn my computer back on later and watch the video again, It freezes and I get the memory dump screen, is there a driver fix for this?

    and

How much longer battery life is the 12 cell as apposed to the 6 cell.

Can you post your amd driver version??

The latest HP amd driver is 8.771.1.0 ( Cat 10.10).

Since yours is an i7 model, you can use the official amd driver instead.

Where you getting the info about 12 cell oem battery for the dv6 3rd gen?

Try downloading the latest official driver from AMD. This sounds similar to a problem I had (except that I didn't get a blue screen), and updating the driver fixed it. Of course, I updated to HP's latest driver, but I believe this was a known issue supposedly fixed in the 10.10 drivers from October.

Also, you mean 9-cell, right? There's no 12-cell for this model.

Alrighty, well I heard a 12 cell, maybe for an older gen. In regards to the 9 cell then, how much battery life am I looking at for an i7 that reaches around 2 hours 30min on a cell. Would it be simple mathematics of 33% more?

Also how do I check my driver version?

do a run command or type on search bar on start menu
    type 'dxdiag' without the ''

    click on display tab.

The 6 cell should be able to supply 2hrs and 45 mins for the i7 models.
A friend of mine was able to push it close to almost 4 hrs on his dv6t i7.
His power usage is almost on par as mine. I run much more background apps than him.

You could try enable the power mixer on your card, which basically underclock it pretty severely.

I'm not fussed about the battery life, having said that I would happily buy an extra battery without the expense of underclocking the power.

My driver version is currently 8.692.1.0 which clearly indicates it isn't up to date. Now how do I go about updating the driver? I've downloaded the binary for the 8.771.1.0 driver. I'm guessing I need to remove the previous driver, How do I do this? Device Manager?

Has the ambient temperature in your room increased? If not, then try either switching to power saver for a little while to see if it makes a difference. As a last resort, put it in standby (with the lid up) for 10 minutes after gaming to give it a little time to cool off. (I don't know if there may be a potential risk to doing this.)

Oh, and switching to integrated graphics would help a lot.

Ambient temp hasn't changed. It'll switch to power saver and intel graphics when I go on battery, which gives me the same temps as on power. It's strange, as a few weeks ago my "on battery" temperatures were in the mid 30's.

What I noticed about this laptop and it's temperatures is that, the GPU and especially the CPU temp depend A LOT of the ambient temperature. A change of 5 degrees Celsius in the ambient temperature can result in 20 degrees in the GPU temperature and also (the thing that I hate the most) the red hot palm rest :((((
I can't imagine when the hot summer days arrive, my left palm rest area would be untouchable :(

For those considering a notebook cooler. I have one and it's doing a great job in terms of GPU temperature (more than 10 degrees celsius cooler GPU) but it never helps with the palm rest, i think it makes it even hotter...

I think I should try that thermal paste and stuff... I heard there's a good one named Arctic Silver, is that right???
Anybody knows how to open my dv6tse??? or a link to something?

    Thanks

If you try to use this laptop (or just about any laptop) in a room without AC in the summer, a hot palm rest is going to be the least of your concerns. You should be more concerned about overheating and possibly your common sense. :p I'm actually more concerned about my temps in winter than in the summer, since the heating in my room is a bit too high. But I digress.

What are your ambient, CPU, and GPU temps?

IC Diamond 7 are really good much better than AS 5. It is also less risky of shorting something out.

I don't use it on this laptop yet. So far my temps and my inspection of the thermal pads are satisfactory. I do notice that it sucks up more dust and hair strains than my old D 1525.

I'm not sure about my ambient temp, the GPU and CPU both run around the 50s on iddle, and on gaming the CPU temp jumps over the 90, GPU I think is less than 70. But as I said, it's not those temps, it's the 2 hot palm rest that I am worried about, it sweats my hand, and if the ambient temp is a little higher it gets too hot to touch.

It's not really their fault, its more the fault of my working area is dirty and it is shared by hundreds of people. Sure I like girls with long hair but it just so nasty to clean out the fan(s).

Anyways, cleaning out the fans with only a can of air is more effective than hair removal. Except after a year of usage, clean out the hairs as they jam the fan.

I have just got a dv6 3034tx, and notice that the screen along the right edge (along the vertical scroll bar), is a bit dimmer than the rest of the screen. I'm sure it's probably normal but thought i'd check if anyone else notices this?
