Great info City Pig - Looks like I'll order one just like yours, but will spend the extra $60 for 8GB. This is my first customized laptop build, built my PC at home 6 years ago. Does HP typically offer deep discounts the day after Christmas? Thanks again for the info - Bugs

You need to call HP shop about that.... You may need to call a couple of times to confirm. They do make mistakes on query about specifications.

I see pre-configured builds of SE that has a reader with no backlit keyboards in brick and mortar shops. Not so sure from HP shop.

    Hello,

I ordered my Dv6tSE a few days ago. It wont be here for a couple weeks. But I'd like to ask what kind of case/sleeve or skin are most you guys using to protect you notebooks?

Also for those of you that custom configured your notebook from hp online. How many of you had your Dv6tSE build/ship/receive faster than the ETA? My order date was Dec.18, my estimated build date is Jan.3. 15 days to build!?!?

    Thanks!

I just got my Dv6tse today!!

Currently doing an uninstall of some of the HP-bloatware.

Is the HP Documentation program important? What about HP Quick Launch? Or HP Software Framework? And EnergyStar Digital Logo? Do I need that?

What should I remove and what should I keep?

    Thanks!!

If you're willing to sacrifice hard drive space and opt for the SSD, most people will vouch that it's truly the best upgrade, I'd recommend it for one.

They give such a late date just in case something causes a delay. In most cases, the laptop reaches you on the estimated build date.

That said, this is the holiday season, so it might take a bit longer.

    Hey guys.
I received my dv6tse about two weeks ago.
    Specs: i5-580, 8gb ram, radeon 5650.
    I also have a 640gb 7200rpm Samsung HM640JJ hard drive.

It was great at first, but since i installed and ran some games (i think when i ran NFS: Hot pursuit it was triggered), my hard drive wont stop spinning.

i just ran HDTune, i have a warning on Calibration Retry Count, 4 attempts something...
    what can i do?

Hi, dunno is this the right place to ask, but I recently missed the $200 coupon deal of the dv6t SE. Currently now it's the $100 coupon deal but I can't get anywhere close to $999 configuration with my own demands (since i want the 5650 ATI card) ... Anybody knows whether there will be another $200 coupon soon (or likely at all), or should I just go with the 512MB card instead?

hello everyone! i bought DV6t SE a few days ago. I like the laptop but currently I am facing some problems.

    1. The keyboard layout is horrible. The shortcut keys located at the left are creating problems. Is there any way I can disable these buttons?

    2. I am trying to create recovery disks by using the "recovery media creation" tool. When the process gets to 75%, the program automatically shuts down and the process does not end. I have tried a few times but the same process repeats again and again. Please help me out.

If you're talking about the 21GB partition, that system recovery and you should only remove it if you have restore disks.

If you're talking about the 99MB partition, however, I think that it can be removed, but might lead to problems. Either way, keep it. It takes up such an insignificant amount of space that it's not worth the effort.

Don't remove the System Reserved partition, as it contains the windows bootloader. Without it, your windows will fail to boot until repair.

Hmm, I assumed it was the 21GB partition, he was talking about since its only viewable in explorer. Not many people use the Disk management in administration section.

Well, this is weird. Despite the fact that my CPU an GPU are both only in the 40s, the fan started running at full speed. Odd. Has this happened to anyone else?

Oh, I see. The heat from my charging battery caused it.

Not to nitpick, but "overheating" means a laptop shuts down due to a component getting too hot. :)

Those temps aren't too high, considering the fact that there's only one little fan. Idle temps aren't a main concern anyway. What are your load and/or gaming temps for both the CPU and the GPU? I'd say there may be an issue if it's over 80C for either.

Try GPU-Z or HWMonitor. I recommend HWMonitor because it will give you temps for your CPU, GPU, and hard drive.

Do you have any games? If so, play the most demanding one you have on the High Performance power plan and post all of your max temps.

I just bought an envy 14 brightview, gonna return it. I might be considering the dv6tse, but it looks like there's some heat problems. How bad is it? And how is the screen quality?

LOL the dv6tse comes with free 8gb ram upgrade. that's overkill.

Not necessarily, my laptop is perfectly mine, and many others could say the same, It's just a game of chance, and If you do get the problem then you're able to take it back anyway. Having 8GB is no problem, heck it's future proofing it :p
The screen is quite standard, if you have never had a great screen and/or resolution above what this offers - 1366 x 768 you could find it reasonably good, but I guess it depends of how picky you are.

Of course I found this forum AFTER I ordered my dv6t SE. I don't play games but I do watch video's online and do alot of business computing, some web design and photography so my current dell ran out of HD space and I was never happy with my current Video card.

Anyone find fault or suggestions to what I ordered?

imo, I would recommend not to get this model since you do web design and photography. The lcd monitor resolution is way too small and the colors and contrast isn't great.

By "about the same," you mean...? I'd recommend looking into an external monitor either way.

You build's fine, though your HDD will be a bit slower than most. Not too much, though.

I have 21 days to change my mind I guess.

Hi Cazper37, I was looking back on your screen protector discussion and was wondering what the outcome was?
Such as did the 16" version solve the problem or did you have to custom cut your own?

    Thanks!
(I also have the touch screen version and it seems to be getting scratches from the keyboard. I am still under warranty, do you think HP would replace my screen for me?)

Greetings City Pig, I reordered my dv6tse using your recommendations:

    HP Pavilion dv6t Select Edition
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-460M Dual Core Processor (2.53 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz
    • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA] - For Dual Core Processors
    • FREE Upgrade to 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 640GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • No Additional Office Software
    • No additional security software
    • 9 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (over-sized)
    • 15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
    • No TouchScreen (includes HP TrueVision Webcam)
    • Blu-ray player & Lightscribe SuperMulti DVD burner
    • Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
    • Backlit Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader
    • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

Ended up getting the Blu-Ray to meet the minimum coupon purchase. Saves me from buying a Blu-Ray player for the house. Rather than spend the $120 for Windows 7 Professional thru HP, found the upgrade on Amazon:
Microsoft Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade [Home Premium to Professional]$69.99

Thanks again for your words of wisdom.

This is more a Windows 7 issue, than a laptop issue, but I can't get my sound to work correctly with headphones. Help!

I've plugged in my headphones to the 3.5mm jacks. Headphones/Mic. Under playback devices it lists the headphones as "Default communication device". I assume it's talking about the mic? I don't know.

Any sound playback goes through my TV that I use as my screen through HDMI. That's listed as "Default device". But no matter what I do, I can't change the headphones to the default device. I disable the ati HDMI sound playback, and it goes to my computer speakers. I disable that it goes to another device for another service I have. I disable that and it says no available playback devices, even though my headphones are sitting right there.

    Any advice/help appreciated.

debatting between the dv6t and the envy 14, both have backlit keyboards which are required for me.

can anyone tell me if the envy and dv6t both have the same keyboard...they both look like island/chiclet style, but i cant tell from pictures if theyre the same ones.

also, do they have the same screen? i know the envy has a flush-glass type screen...but does the dv6t have this as well?

    thanks

Alrighty, I got a bunch of new games from Steam, and SC2 also, but my temps are worrying when playing SC2. I've blown out the vents with air, they weren't bad at all. I have max temps of 94 on the GPU, 95 and 94 for the CPU. Now...the fact that water could just about boil in my computer is seriously worrying.

At what point does HP say "Yeah you have a cooling problem, send your laptop in."?

If I'm not mistaken, the Envy 14 and Envy 17 keyboards also have the black layer underneath like DV6T and DM4. The keyboard you posted is for ENVY 15.

Not sure about the build quality of ENVY 14 keyboards, but my DM4's keyboard is a bit on the cheap-ish feel.

W00t! Got my Dv6tSE today! So far im VERY happy with it! I followed the "out of the box" guide... but I still have a few questions. What is the best program to uninstall the bloatware? What program do you guys use to display CPU/GPU temps?

I'm also concerned with my Blu-Ray drive. It takes a bit of effort to get a disc to snap onto the spin driver thing. Is this normal? So far everything seems to be working well. Anything I should test/look for while im still under the limited warranty?

    Thanks!

Try Revo Uninstaller and HWMonitor. :)

    Thanks!

Does it also take you some effort to snap a disc into the drive? Is that normal? I almost feel as if im going to break my Blu-Ray slider trying to snap or remove a disc from the spin driver.

Got mine too, I just love it. No issues so far.... I don't know what bloatware to take off, uninstalled Norton since I have McAfee and NYtimes reader as well.

Still getting used to the touchpad and clickers, but I think they'll be fine. :)

I bet if I did a search, I'd find a list of bloatware and what they do to determine what to remove.

Hey guys, i've appreciated all the help you've given me before and i'm back yet again...hahah. I think I read about this problem before but recently my touch pad has started making a really annoying metallic clicking sound when I press down on the lower right side. Is that normal for this model and if not how do I fix it?

    Thank You!!

Could anyone recommend a notebook cooler that works well with this notebook? My temps are a bit high when gaming and I'd like to lower them a bit.
