I recently got a Zalman NC2000 and it is working out great!
-
What are the temperature differences between having it and not having, including idle and gaming differences.
-
I knew that question was coming, My temps are not %100 accurate these are just observation temps over the past few days. I plan on doing a more accurate panel soon.
I used GPU-Z and Core Temp
Temps with laptop on cooler, but cooler is off.
Idle) Avg GPU 40C, Avg CPU 34C
Light Use) Avg GPU 50C, Avg CPU 50C
Starcraft 2) Avg GPU 73C, Avg CPU N/A
With Zalman NC2000 on High
Idle) Avg GPU 38C, Avg CPU 30C
Light Use) Avg GPU 46C, Avg CPU 45C
SC2) Avg GPU 65C, Avg CPU N/A
Light Use was internet surfing, about 3 website running at the same time.
Starcraft 2 is running High texture and medium settings. -
I'm guessing you have an i5?
I was planning on getting the 3000 simply for the elevation but the cooling will be a benefit since the left palm rest gets a bit irritatingly hot after long use.
Cheers for the temps though! +rep -
Thanks,
I do apologize I will have to add my specs to my sig. But yes it is a i5 m460 with a ATI 5650.
Yeah i am really happy with my temps, at first they seemed hot, I would get highs of 84C on the GPU and 86C on CPU which is why I got the cooler. But after a month of use my laptop seems to stay cooler I rarely see temps above 76C without the cooler. I always use the cooler when playing games.
A few observations on the NC2000 if anyone cares.
The silver version of the cooler is lighter than the Dv6 aluminum case. So if you want the silver because it might match it doesn't, The Dv6 is darker than the cooler. It doesn't look bad, but they don't match.
All the air passages under the laptop rest over the holes on the cooler they match up almost perfectly, even the fan inlet rests over the air holes.
A Dv6se and NC-2000 are a very good match. -
Just got 3 dead pixels on my dv6tse... 3 months of use... what do I do? Does HP have Global Warranty?
PLEASE answer me... City Pig, roastedpork... the more active users... -
Dead pixels are definitely covered by the warranty. As for global, you should have one.
HP warranty - frequently asked questions
EDIT: Actually, I just thought about it. I don't think that 3 pixels is enough for HP do do something about it. Sorry. -
Does anyone know of a way to control fan speed? I know you can change whether the fan is always on in the BIOS. Right now, with that setting enabled, the fan runs constantly, but fairly loud (CPU temps are around 46-48C and GPU around 50-52C). I tried disabling always on, but the fan keeps spinning down then spinning up then down then up, etc. every minute or so which is getting rather annoying.
Another random question: When your fan does start, does it seem to ramp up to max speed then drop off after a few seconds? That is really bugging me as well. -
It's pretty rare that you can control fan speed on a laptop, especially a single-fan one. It's probably not possible, I'm afraid.
If you mean when you turn the laptop on, that's normal. -
and aren't dead pixel warranties usually within the first 30 days or so of owning the laptop?
-
Damn... I cant belive it... Brazilian HP wont give-me support or fix it... even if I pay for it...
Damn... damn...
3 notebook, never had dead pixel problems... all of them 1366x768... and this one... this gives me 3 dead pixel in the SAME DAY...
I wish a Full HD LCD-LED replacement from samsung... Oh I wish... -
I'm using a Notepal U2 cooler. The light use temps are lower when I have my laptop on top of the cooler (around 45 for both GPU and CPU), and when the cooler is on the temps are even lower. However, The hot left palm rest area doesn't seem to correspond with the GPU and CPU temps. I kind a have the feeling that when the cooler is on, the left palm rest is even hotter :S. So far I found out that, how hot the left palm rest area is depends mostly of the ambient temp.
Whatever it is, it's a big minus for this laptop, together with the $5 display. -
If the fan does that max spin up when turned on, that's fine to me. But when that starts to get obnoxious is when the always on is disabled in the BIOS and every minute or so, the fan turns off which makes it very quiet, but then turns on at max speed for a few seconds. Any way around that max spin up while the fan cycles on/off?
-
I think that's just how it works. The only solutions are to either enable "always on," or to use your laptop in a walk-in freezer. (Okay, maybe the second choice is a bad idea.)
-
Thanks. It's just that I've used other laptops and they don't do that obnoxious spinup. =/

Happy user of this model HP laptop for about 3 months now, BUT my wireless connection will always drop a few times if I'm using it for an extended session. It's fine when I wake it from sleep or hibernate, but if I'm on the web or online gaming for a while, the wireless connection will just drop and I'll have to go into the Network and Sharing Center to reconnect it. After the reconnect, it will work just fine for the rest of the time. Does anybody else have this problem?
I know the stock Intel WiFi Link 1000 is not that great of a card and I have been thinking of upgrading to one of the white-listed cards. Anybody else do this and have recommendations?
Specs for reference:
dv6t - SE
i5-460m
6gb RAM
ATI 5650
Windows 7 Pro x64 -
Have you at least tried updating the driver first?

Yes, the latest Intel wireless drivers from the Drivers thread are installed. -
Hey Falco, i finally got my hands on a intel 6250. I popped it into my dv6t-3000 cto select. Everything works fine. Just have to go to the main intel site and download their drivers. Works like a charm!
-
Nicely done
Well the only known good whitelisted cards for the dv6 are
Intel centrino 6250 (dual band + [Wimax + 4g *Requires a Wimax passthough])

Hi,
Is anyone successfully install other OS (non win7) in HP dv6t??
The BIOS always hardcode WIN7. -
I haven't tried it myself, but I know it's possible. (I've never even heard of an OS being "hardcoded" in the BIOS...) There are issues, however.
If you want Linux, as with most laptops, you'll have issues finding drivers.
If you want XP, don't. PLEASE don't.
If you want Vista... Well, actually you'll be fine there since Windows 7 is basically Vista SP3.
-
You can run other OS.
There are no restriction on that but good luck on finding drivers.
The linux os, you need know how to compile and install. You may need to fix the warnings as they eventually lead to errors.
Virtual OS, no problems there. -
Great forum...
I've been lurking that last few days...just gathering some info.
I was torn between the dv6tse and dv7tse. (still am)
I ordered my dv6tse a few days ago. (using the $500 off coupon)

I actually went back yesterday to order the dv7tse....but the coupon had expired. It would have been nearly the same set-up (minus touchscreen and back-lit keyboard, but with an i7 instead) for about the same price.
I'm torn on this... I kinda want to wait for the Sandy Bridge chips to hit, but I have no clue how long it will take to get another $500 off coupon. I'm worried about the heat, and the new chips should run much cooler. I emailed HP, and they had no answer on when the new chips will arive....other than sometime around the 1st part of the year (which means what? now?)....
-
The $500 off coupon probably won't be available on the new Sandy Bridge equipped systems until this time around NEXT year when they prepare for the next big iCore refresh. You'll always be chasing the latest and greatest.
Since you missed out on the $500 coupon, I recommend waiting. Another month it should be available. It'll be more expensive, but the new i7 will be cooler and a lot more efficient. I think you'll be happier 2-3 months from now. -
Does anyone wanna trade 8GB of RAM with 6 GB with me? I really need a 4GB chip instead of the 2 i have in right now..... I'll throw in some money too
-
You can buy a 4GB stick for like $30.
-
Soren, may I know exactly where you got your Intel 6250? Is it retail or from another manufacturer (ie Dell, Lenovo)? And it worked as soon as you put it in (drivers installed) no BIOS error or something? Thanks!
-
Yeah....that is where I'm stuck. Do I keep what I have, do I call HP and see if I can change my order with the same discount, or do I wait a few more months.
It isn't like a 1st gen i5 with a 5650, 8GB of ram, and a 7200 rpm HDD will be "slow"...and even if I do get the change my order for the same price...it will still be a 1st gen i7 it the dv7tse with a new i7 available.
Now that I think about it...I'm probably better off waiting. I won't cancel the order, as it will me some time to play with the touchscreen and check out the monitor. -
I should ask (since this board seems to be more popular than the dv7tse board.....but I'll ask over there also)....
Did anyone else have a tough time choosing between the 6 and 7?
If so, what was your reason for going with the 6?
Thanks... -
I wanted the 7 for it's hard rive bay capacity of 2. But my unwillingness to spend extra and to carry it around school tempted me to settle with the 6.
I'll probably remove the optical drive in any case and put an SSD in. -
And I'll probably remove the optical drive in mine and replace it with a nice big HDD, the SDD that came with this just isn't large enough.
-
If you take it out is the hole where the entrance of the optical drive just a massive empty gap?
-
Not necessarily, there are adaptors sold in the web that looks like an optical drive for a laptop but takes laptop HDD's...
-
Hi everybody .
This is my disk .... Can i delete System Partition or Recovery Partition .... or both of them?
Since i want to create a new my own partition with my photos and video (some thing like that) ...
Thanks for reading. -
You can delete the recovery partition if you already have recovery disks, but you need to keep the system partition, or else you won't be able to boot.
-
@CityPig : Thank you
-
That's odd, that doesn't look like a normal factory configuration.
Your system reserve is twice the size of it should of been. Also, it's shouldn't have a disk letter mapped on it by default.
Oh well.
Anyways, there is a Vietnamese LIP for windows 7 if you want most of the os labels in viet. -
Hey I am getting an error when I start up my laptop. It says I have an error 90B which means one of my fans is not working. This shows up before windows even begins to start up. It will auto shut off within 15 seconds unless I push the enter key. Does anyone know how to get the fan working again? If not, I'm just going to call HP tomorrow because it seems like I might have to send in my laptop for repair.
-
Reckon you could show me one? Maybe they have a name they go by?
-
Unless you know how to open it up and fix it yourself, you have to send it in.
-
Can i have a question?
Anybody run MacOS on dv6t SE? -
You can't talk about Hackintosh here.
-
It's called a SATA hdd UltraBay adapter....
Googled: 2.5'' SATA HDD Ultrabay Adapter - Google Search
Amazon.com: 2ND HDD Adapter for Ultrabay Slim: Electronics
Tinpec 2nd Hard Disk Drive Adapter products, buy Tinpec 2nd Hard Disk Drive Adapter products from alibaba.com
2.5'' SATA HDD Ultrabay Adapter Sales, Buy 2.5'' SATA HDD Ultrabay Adapter Products from alibaba.com -
does that include the HDD caddy, like the cords so the hardrive can be connected or is that simply a cover for the caddy, meaning the caddy is still needed.

Hi! I'm relevatively new to this forum. I recently got my dv6-3052nr last month, which i have no idea whether that is a dv6tse or just a dv6t because it came in the brushed aluminum. I've noticed several minor issues.
1. The fingerprint reader sometimes does not work (like it shuts off) at random times. It would work for like 30 min, then stop functioning when I use regular websites like facebook. My only solution is to restart the computer. Although this is not a HUGE issue, it would be nice if it was solved.
2. Also during random times, the single fan in this laptop will suddenly "shut off" and then suddenly go on full blast. It would repeat this process several times and then resume normal function. Any ideas on how to solve this problem? (I tried updating the BIOS, but it has not solved this problem)
3. Third and probably the most annoying problem: bad battery life. I just tested this with 40% brightness, wi-fi on (yes I do know wifi eats up power), and doing light web surfing and playing youtube songs in the background. Just a note, I have the i7-720qm with a ATI mobility Radeon 5650 GPU, which also eats up a lot of power. HP stated around 5 hours of battery life for the 6-cell, but I get around 1 1/2 hours with the details above. Any reasons why I get such little battery life?
4. Actually, scratch out what I said above. THIS may be the most annoying problem. At some random time, especially when I'm loading videos, windows will crash. When I restart it, a message shows saying that the graphics driver crashed. I have updated the graphics drivers to the most recent edition, but now I am experiencing other problems that also crash windows.
5. I don't mean to bother anyone too much for answers, but I am curious whether anyone else's metal lid flexes towards the center. Mine certainly flexes quite a lot. Also, where the screen meets the right edge "siding," I can see visible light from the LCD's in the back leaking out. Anyone else have this problem?
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! -

It's a dv6tse.
1.) Try updating the driver.
2.) Go into the BIOS and make sure the "fan always on" option is enabled.
3.) You got burned. You can't get good battery life with that CPU. You'd have to return it and get a dv6t with either a dual-core CPU or a quad-core i7-2630QM/2720QM/2820QM or get 9-cell battery if you want more battery life. The i7-720QM/740QM/820QM/840QM will always give very bad battery life.
4.) When you updated the driver, did you remember to uninstall the old one first? It sounds like you didn't.
5.) The flex there is normal, and it actually probably isn't a bad thing in this case. It's less than with most laptops (except ones with very thin lids, which I personally don't always like because thin usually means flimsy). It just means that there's space between the top of the lid and the LCD, which can be a cheap way of protecting the screen when the lid is aluminum. As for the sliding and bleeding, those are not normal.
Um... You have the Quad Edition, not the Select Edition.
Anyway, yes, it sticks out. As for changing it, you'll have to call HP on that one. -
Ah, I see, I overlooked the Quad Edition thread XD. Thanks for answering my question.
-
thanks for your input! Sorry if this sounds amateur, but I want to know how to uninstall the old driver (BIOS) correctly. Don't want to screw it up. Also, how exactly do you access the fan option in the BIOS?
I could technically still replace my computer, but I have everything on it already and prefer not to create recovery disks or do the requirements before sending the laptop back to HP right now. I guess I'll stay with the battery life for now and maybe get a 9 cell later on. I wanted this laptop to last me about 4 years, then I might get a MBP or another HP laptop.
Anyways, thanks your answers!
