Send it for repairs. (Unless you just got it, in which case you should return it.) It sounds like you have a serious problem that can't be caused by background programs unless you have a virus or something.

By the way, are you in high performance mode? If so, don't use that. Ever. Stick to Balanced/HP Recommended.

Ok, do you know how long repairs generally take? I used this computer for school and my old computer is basically broken so I'd like to minimize the time it's in the shop.

    Thanks

    Thanks, I didn't notice it :p

Does anyone recommend best drivers for radon 5650? Stock drivers are really bad.

Crysis warhead: Texture errors, no characters in screen, no geometry...

In spain, lastest drivers are: 8.771.1.0 what catalyst version does it correspond?

    cheers! :)

I just upgraded the ATI 5650 drivers to the current one on HP's site - sp50640 (v8.771.1.0). Doing this decreased my graphics desktop performance for Windows Aero score to 3.2. It was at 5.9 under the previous ATI driver - sp49450 (v8.741.1.1). What gives???

Did you remember to completely uninstall the old driver completely first?

By the way, Windows Experience Index is virtually useless. I get a 6.7 for both scores, so it's not even consistent.

@radeonxt: 10.10, which you will be permanently stuck with if you have switchable graphics, unfortunately.

I definitely don't think you're alone... I'm on the i5-540 as you can see in the picture and check out my temps. I bought this laptop back in 07/2010, and whew look at this thing go. I'm not even doing much with it that would stress the CPU.

My laptop is also completely virus free as well. I'm pretty well versed in the art of CPU maintenance. Most bulkware removed.FF with adblock and noscript, HIPS, low disk fragmentation, clean temp files, etc. Minimal is what I like.

Edit: Found my answer in previous posts ^_^ Thanks for the help offer though City Pig.

upps, how do you say? "What a shame?"

Is it possible to install AMD drivers even having a conmutable GPU in order to at least use full power of 5650 even discarding Intel HD? i've got a netbook so i don't care about intel HD, but I wanted an i5 cause of temps.

    Thanks

It is possible, but you be driving up the temps which makes it no different or worse than an i7 model, plus a couple of nuisance.

I picked on of these up a while back...

Looking to do a little overhaul on my stock...

    Currently running -

    Core i5 540m
    4 GB DDR3 1333
    320 GB 7200 RPM
    Switchable 5650

Looking to upgrade my RAM and the HDD.

Looking at the following...anyone have either experience or an opinion.

    Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB
    G.Skill 2x4GB 1066

I figured the 1066 is fine with the i5 since there is no gain with the 1333. Can someone confirm that.

    Hey guys

Don't really have time to search, but has anyone elses touchscreen started acting funky since the driver update through windows update? Mine updated to a wacom driver and I can't seem to uninstall it.

My symptoms are that the screen requires some measurable amount of input (a few touches in different spots) before actually accepting the input. I've uninstalling the device and letting it reinstall but that just puts the wacom driver back into place. I've also tried setting usb power settings.

I know that it works and it is getting power (it shows up in device manager), but I have no idea how to roll back/nuke the wacom driver.

I'm probably going to send it back to HP and have them deal with it since there are some other issues too (like the crappy keyboard and the creaky touchpad). I'm hoping that they'll be like "Meh, just give him a 3rd generation, these were model defects".

Does anyone else have their desktop icons rearrange when you switch between GPUs? It's strange... I usually have my "Trash Bin" in the bottom right, after I switch to the Intel GPU it moves to the left under "My Computer". Ill move it back, then it does the same thing again next time I switch. Anyone know what causes this to occur?

    Thanks!

My laptop has officially overheated to the point of shutting down (I think). HUZZAH!

It isn't even worth getting repaired, but I guess I have no choice since I'm about four years from having the spare money for a replacement.

this is a stupid question...but i can't seem to figure it out. maybe it is the function key causing the problem.

I am trying to boot from my windows disk so i can so a fresh install on my computer. i want to delete all partitions and repartition. I have done this in the past, but only from the windows disk on boot up. the only thing is, i can't seem to enter the bios to change the boot order so i can boot from the disk. If someone can tell me the key that would be great.

    Thanks

The shortcut key to the bios are not standardized on all. Though the common ones I worked on are F2, del, F10.

The esc key was the general options key

Keys like F10/12 were the 'quick' specific options of that menu

Ouch. I sent mine in when it was pushed to 104C by Starcraft 2, now I'm actually afraid to game on it, and BFBC2 pushes it to 84-85 regularly. Is it still under warranty? Hp was good on taking mine back and were able to replicate the problem and fix it..I have a feeling they just re-applied the burnt up thermal paste tho..

Oh, anyone know what size hard drive caddy will fit in the optical bay of these? I'm looking to expand since the SSD is full.

Okay, I lied... sorta. Windows said that it shut down due to overheating while it was shutting down due to me shutting it down. But here's the odd thing. I played Crysis 2 demo (though all games cause similar temps), I got this, but no throttling of shutdown.

Anyway, I have two problems. First of all, I need the laptop for school, so going without it for a month can't really work. Second, the laptop fell a few months ago, and I'm positive that HP will blame it on that (even though the problem started before that, but I can't prove that) and use it as an excuse to void my warranty and charge me.

that is odd...I thought these processors were supposed to shut down at 105C...

I'm not sure what HP would do about the fall and high-temps...is there considerable amounts of noticeable damage? If it is purely cosmetic I would think that they would still repair it, but then again..it is HP.

I hear ya on the needing it for school, luckily I sent mine in during Christmas break and received it within two weeks. Now if I really had to, I could use the Cr-48 from Google in a pinch..but it's not so great for my school needs.

They are supposed to shut down. And my battery is supposed to have a 2% wear level. I'm very confused...

It's definitely cosmetic. Nothing happened besides the corner of the lid getting bent.

Hi, I've recently started to experience a problem
Sometimes during normal use, my screen will just go white
White with pink/white vertical lines across the bottom of the screen

If I press the power button to put my computer to sleep,
usually it be will be back to normal and functional when it comes back on

Sometimes, when waking up my computer from shutdown or sleep,
it will also go straight to this white screen
It takes several power-off, power-ons to not get this white screen
Sometimes in the middle of the starting up displays it will go to the white screen

Has anybody experienced this type of problem?
Does anybody know what the issue might be or how to fix it?
I'm not sure if it's a problem stemming from hardware or software/drivers

I don't do any gaming on my computer, if that's a fact that might help
I don't really do very much intensive stuff on my computer,
except use Eclipse for programming classes (if that's intensive)

Also, which drivers should I install/update for graphics? and how?
I know there's a drivers page for this computer but I'm confused by how under
    "AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5470 / 5650 / 5850 / 6370M / 6550M"
it says "Do not install these if you have an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator / Intel HD Graphics!"
    and under "Intel HD Graphics"
it says "Do not install this if you have an ATI graphics card or an NVIDIA graphics card!"

I have the i5 version that has switchable graphics, so how should I update/install graphics drivers?

    Thanks for the help

My God, those are your temps? These are mine idling.

On a somewhat related note: why does your HWMonitor show your battery statistics but mine does not. Mine gives me more info about my chipset though, seemingly.

I'm thinking what was caused the missing battery info, I had the same problem on mine...resolved it by using an older bios and upgraded it back up after clean install.

There could be other factors, such as the HP UEFI, which was installed prior. Reason for removal, it allocated 2GB and used 20MB on mine for some reason, cannot shink and move due to hardcoded start address for it.

I figured out where my battery info went: I'm using the latest version of HWMonitor. It actually knows what cpu I have and what not but doesn't display battery info anymore.

So when HP sent you back the "fixed" computer, are you now able to play Starcraft 2 reasonably well?

I have the i5 540 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650. The computer use to be able to run SC2 fine on medium/high settings, but now I run it on low settings and it is really slow and overheats. I am debating whether or not to send it in as I still have a few more months on the warranty.

    Send it in asap....
There someone here, who waited it out, now regrets it.

Curiously, are you using the hp drivers or the amd drivers from amd site (they tend to jack the temps up)?

Actually I had thought I was fully updated b/c windows update and HP auto update said that I was up to date. But after manually checking all the drivers on HP's website, I actually did not have the latest driver for the chipset. (I did have latest BIOS and Graphics Card drivers though).

After updating chipset driver, now my CPU and GPU temps are both around 70-75 C while watching youtube videos on 720p (it used to be 104 C). Currently re-installing Starcraft 2 to see if I can at least run some 3v3's online with medium settings without burning a hole in my desk.

My ambient temps now are 55-58 for CPU/GPU. Gaming it runs 85-90. Still way better than before as i can actually run the game. Is that a dangerous level?

Thanks. 55-58C is the temperature range when idle and running ATI graphics. 49-53 when running Intel Graphics. My room temp is 22C

Like I mentioned before, gaming temps go up to 90 for CPU and GPU.

How do these numbers compare with you guys? Should I be worried?

so a 104C temp is a reason to send it in? i'm like another user, i use this for school and i'm extremely hesitant to be without a computer for some time (i actually had to send my computer in earlier because my monitor had a problem, kept going white on me during certain startups) and i shudder at sending it in again...

but on the other hand, i've been running DA2 and hitting some pretty high temps (high 90s, low 100s) and i've been getting concerned; i use a cooling pad and all that.

for the user who sent it in, A) how long did it take to repair, and B) what did you say to them? And C) have you actually noticed any change?

it just seems like our laptops were built to run hot..

Hello all, I have a question about these latest wireless drivers for the dv6t-se (bought in July last year) with "My WiFi". I don't mind installing updated wireless drivers, but is there any way to avoid that My WiFi crap? I don't need it, and I'm pretty sure the last time when i installed the drivers through the HP support assistant, they caused my Firefox browser install to stop working, and I had to do a system restore to get rid of the new wifi drivers, and then reinstall Firefox.

104C? Well..it was about 1 degree away from shutting itself down, so yes, it is reason to worry.

I sent mine in and it took about a day for them to repair once they got it, and they sent it back the day after. Total, I was probably without it for a week. I just told them that it was overheating and getting to 104C, judged from HWmonitor. I said that I was getting artifacts in some games and that it was just running extremely hot under load. They sent it back and now my games don't get above 84C, when before it would get to 103-104C.

Could someone please provide me with the product number for the HP DV6T-3100? Is this the Select Edition model? Also, if I were to configure this computer to meet my specifications, what is currently available in terms of hard drive capacity, ram and processor type? Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

That's just the general model number. Also, the dv6t-3xxx Select Edition is no longer configurable as of... well, this morning.
