Tinderbox: Win8 drivers need to be hacked, one of the members here posted link awhile back.

well, for one thing I use what I believe to be, the last of the development bios, which was apparently left on this machine perhaps by accident. No doubt I'm foregoing some later refinements, but However it got there, it has resulted in occasional surprises, some of them welcome, some not.
seer -
~~ the k53ta i RMA had a mod+OC'd bios on it, cause the thing doenst detect charger so I don't get to flash normal one.
Surprise if the board is useable and get in some one hand. ~~ -
Oh my... what the hell did you do on that one? I mean... how your ac adapter stopped working? you really amaze me baiii
-
Now the replacement is shipped. I will post it again, I edit it out before.
long rant
So weeks ago, I prep the k53 and ready to hand over to my bro. But it is afternoon(he at work) and my new internal antenna arrived for dv6. I toke dv6 apart, then find a place to place the antenna (it is larger than the tyco one and It is folded so it doesnt fit behind the screen.
long story short, I look at my dv6 in parts and k53 .
Hmm, would using the 1080p lvds cable work for k53?( they have a same fit on the board(a little variation but fit perfectly) So I use the 720p hp cable +k53 board + k53 screen.
plug it in outlet, hear static (hear buzz) o crap, disconnect. put together back everything ASAP.
Result:
white screen
hdmi out perfect
computer turn on plug'd in(w/o battery)
computer turn on using battery
computer with battery + charger do not recognize charger~~ -

THANK YOU! I thought it might be, but there were so many conflicting posts all over the web.

well, after playing around some more, i'm liking the 12.3 better all the time.
For the following reason.
I can now o'clock my 6750 memory over my previous stone wall limit of just under 850.
And, i was just looking back over the posts around page 260 of this thread back when the overclocking derby was in full swing and rmac had just put up his breakthrough 2238 or something 3dmark11 score....
well, with the 12.3 and my substantially reduced timings his 820/1020 vs. my 740/885, I'm nearing his overall score while already trashing his physics total and fps scores...which is surprising to say the least. AND, with a top temp of 64C on that run. I'll have to fool around a bit more but the current setup is enabling me to do things I could not do before.
seer -
I actually recommend having a lower memory frequency, this is because of the heat that each of the 8 chips generate, right now I'm playing at 780/880 and the heat has reduced considerably in my overall setup while only losing 2 fps...
-
My bro toke my d6 for some D3 last night(Cause I bake the k53 screen..), I think he using stock setting
1366x768
xfire off, dynamic 2.2ghz/750/850
high text
mid shadow
high physics
Solo look pretty smooth.
Not sure fps, but then me and my bro aren't demanding ppl who cant live w/o 60fps.
Edit: Also brought a "HP" intel 6200(2extra box in the left), gonna see if that works. -
Ill give 12.3 another shot . =)
-
wow i see AMD overdrive gives alot more tweaks, like memory timings etc.. anyone play with them?

er, uh, yeah

oh, and another thing you can try, replace afterburner with the latest saphire trixx
the onscreen widget is very useful when tweaking

"HP" 6200 from ebay is no go.
Yea, i hate loading fraps, I read the fps meter more than I spend time on the game. -
You can just hit the benchmark hotkey and have it *not* display in the game at all. Play now, skim later.
Still want to find a more robust charting app but the prices are absurd. -

Well seer, I've got a few free days until work starts, so Ill see if I cant get a few more points
Ill try with 12.1, then step up to windows 8 consumer preview, and the finally 12.3 . Can anyone share with me the hack to get windows 8 consumer preview drivers installed?
Thanks
UPDATE: I am running whole series of scenarios with 3dmark06 and 3dmark11. Results will be posted soon. -
12.3 do seem pretty good for me. On 12.1a when Id play a game on the 6750 and when its warm, There would be a delay when switching back to desktop (like its waiting for the gpu to cool down).. with 12.3 I think its gone.
-
Hyper, I noticed something like that also, transitions seem a lot faster, for instance when running 3dmark11, the transitions between the different phases of the benchmark seem much quicker, and the load time for that last test seems quite a bit quicker than I remembered.
And Rmac, if I remember right you got pretty close to 2250 on that first go round, now don't toast your puter, but I wouldn't be surprised if you best your previous score by a noticeable amount. I can now run 2200 plus with my normal desktop setup!, that means all my std. config threads and apps running, including the aero desktop, sapphire Trixx, (including the monitoring widget); fusion tweaker, AND, the box is sitting here on my lap on my modified 3 fan coolmaster notebook cooler and a tv tray..AND running much cooler temps
Needless to say , I was surprised (and gratified) to see the results. When i get some more time, I'll strip all those threads out, crank up the AC and wring this thing out one more time looking for the max
With the settings I posted i'm cranking out over 3640 on the physics test with 11.5 fps or so the combo of the new Trixx and Fusion Tweaker seem to be very happy with whatever changes the Overdrive came up with.
Now, when I think about what my new trin box is going to be able to do (25-30 percent increase on the cpu and 50-60 on the graphics- BEFORE overclocking
that old AMD Grin is starting to re-emerge
May 15 is coming, and soon
oh, rumor of the day...I'm told that there are going to be some 'whitebox' trin based gaming lappies put out by at least two mfg's for the custom gamer unit builders, and one of em is going to be cross-fire..as in TWO dedicated series 7000 gpus! Which means, that with the apu igpu, that's going to give 3 gpu's running which for those who may not know, can give a pretty much seamless, not to mention near optimal, gaming experience. This is HUGE news for the gaming crowd..no stuttering, just optimal frame rates at max settings
I just hope they don't go apesh*t on the pricing
Last thing, amd/ati engineers have reportedly discovered a way to "dramatically" improve piledriver's computational performance...unfortunately, the needed mods to the silicon, will require between 18 and 24 months to get to market, but the process is already under way. Now if amd can just stay solvent, looks like we're once again going to get a truly competitive 'high end' alternative to Intel's best. Fingers are crossed
seer -
The intel 6300 driver kick me in BSOD once in a while, so annoying. ~~
-
I am going to try messing around with my system on 12.3. I could not get rid of stuttering with the 12.1a drivers, so my max score was just over 2000 with ulps disabled and dual graphics enabled. I still have never achieved true smooth dual graphics since the days of F.18 bios and 11.6a AMD drivers.
The sad news is, on 12.3 , even my 800/1000 clocks are horribly unstable. It always artifacted and crashed on the Combined test, so I am dropping down to the clocks in the unlocked bios. Also, AMD overdrive completely locks up my system. I think this is because of fusion tweaker.
EDIT: I was able to get my stock CPU clocks back after uninstalling fusion tweaker. Once I get the stability and amd overdrive sorted out, I will mass-post all of my results.
Still tons of stuttering with 12.3
Going to try 12.4 beta and various catalyst application profiles
I am super confused by AMD Overdrive. Everyone has been talking about all this overclocking and timings, and my AMD overdrive is literally a single sliding bar from 1050mhz to 1950mhz, and NO other options. That doesn't really seem like overclocking to me. Am I missing some settings? -
sounds like a defective install. I let the overdrive self test the system, making its own adjustments, then came back and tweaked a bit after.
I'm still using that pre-release bios. As it sits right now, I'm running as a default gaming setup, those bios, the 12.3's, trixx and fusion tweaker (primarily for the rapid up and down (oh and these are the latest trixx and ft's). I had been running the 11.6a's and instead of using the full ati wipe etc. routine, i downloaded the 12.3 cat mobile package direct from amd's website (64 bit), brought up the installer, told it to uninstall the full previous package, rebooted, then had it install the full 12.3, on reboot the ccc etc. didn't appear and had glitch city, opened the installer, custom uninstalled the ccc, then immediately reinstalled it, rebooted and eveerything came up and working. been nothing but pleasant surprises ever since. Oh, one thing I did was install the trixx monitor widget, and uninstall completely every trace of afterburner. I then run the 3dmark 11 sequence without changing anything, i.e. my normal desktop setup. When I saw that afterburner had installed and was working, I let it run its autotune sequence (which I described earlier).
When that completed, I rebooted, everything again came up and i ran my first o'clocked 3dmark11 which came out to 2191 AND never kicked the fan's to max. I then ran skyrim, COD BLack Ops and something else, oh yeah, wow, and having good results, no bluescreens, hangs or anything, this is now my daily fixxed setting. Regarding the lack of smooth xfire profiles between the igpu and the dgpu, I'm seeing a bit of that also. Depending on the app, I get intermittent full xfire utilization periods lasting from 2 to 10 secs or so then I'll see a down blip from the igpu as presumably, the cpu is grabbing more resources for something, then the igpu will kick back in.
I do notice that the base temps are elevated over what i was used to, up from 33 or so, to now around 38-40, but the top end is down into the mid 60's to mid 70's now so I'm content.
I'm using the box for a project at the moment, so won't have the opportunity to strip threads out, defrag etc. and prep for a full boat 3dmark college try, but one run at 2208 has already put me over anything I could do previously, and with lower settings (at least according to the various monitors-- who knows what Overdrive did during its autotune. One thing it did for sure was push my temps to 92C which I'd never seen before(or since) on this box.

haha.
ivy bridge reviews are out.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5772/mobile-ivy-bridge-and-asus-n56vm-preview/6
intel HD4000 beats 6620g mostly, even at Dirt 3, which was optimized for AMD.
IB cpu power also squashes amd.
This year will be a good one for laptops. -
CPU performance didn't improve by much though. This is a good chance for AMD to start catching up in the CPU department.
-
But a i7 is easily $200 on top on A8. Some of the bench may even be bottnecked by the crappy APU stock performance.
Let see how i5 price. -
How are you using fusion tweaker WITH AMD Overdrive? When I had fusion tweaker running, my computer would completely freeze every time I ran the overdrive auto-test software.
Does your fusion tweaker automatically overclock your CPU, and then the AMD Overdrive picks up and tests these values? I thought the only thing u were using to OC the CPU was Overdrive based on what was said previously. -
Anand is drinking the koolaide....check the clocks on an I7 3720qm....vs. the a8 3520? c'mon.....
the ivy bridge I7 is clocked at 2600mhz base with a turbo of 3600? , the A8? 1600mghz with a turbo of 2500mghz......er, "excuuzzzzzzeee meee" what's wrong with this picture....Jesus Anand, whose weed are you smoking?
with comparable clock speeds the 6620g thrashes Intel's 4000, ...vs. trinity its a friggin massacre.... Intel's only hope is Haswell, which in the immortal words of the MSoft Fud machine is coming "real soon now" i.e. sometime 2013, and NOT early either...
On a personal level, I have, well, literally, 'seen' the future...and for what its worth, a trin box is in my future
seer -
Mac, i'm sorry, should have been clearer. I ran overdrive, THEN installed the latest Ftweaker. I *may* be wrong, but it *appears* to me that Overdrive examines the inter chip timings during its examination and apparently optimizes them during the process. This would explain the increase in the physics scores. What i primarily use Ftweaker for is to more accurately control the Pstate transition states. If I remember right, you and Wing were of the 'ganged' pstate camp, whereas I've remained with the 'unganged faction'. I believe that the nature of the amd turbo algorithm is heavily biased towards monitoring multiple core 'loads'. Thus unganged, permits a single or two cores to shoot up to handle specific threads, letting the other cores drop - which not only conserves energy, produces less heat, but convinces the turbo algorithm that sufficient resources are available to permit one or two cores to go to turbo mode and sustain it longer than would otherwise be permitted....course that's just me
seer
Ok, just relooked at this weenie's article and its NOT Anand, was some contributor....so Anand, I withdraw my suspicions on your weed preference and consumption proclivities. <wink>. LOL
AND, just for chits and giggles...go on down the article to the 3dmark11 tests....
Is there anyone here with a 6620g that can't beat Intel Ivy's wunderchip's "807"? I mean seriously... -
I wasnt able to get in to overdrive because it lock up when I do the auto detect thing. In what way the overdrive is better?
-
Are you guys talking about the driver's overdrive? or the seperate amd overdrive?? I downloaded the seperate one which gives you more options, but I could not get any tweaks to accept it. Keeps defaulting.
-
Except the CPU clocks have nothing to do with the GPU. An i5 with the HD4000 would perform very similarly if not the same.
-
You guys may also wish to read this regarding msi afterburner and sapphire trixx with later AMD packages.
[GUIDE] Enable unofficial overclocking after Catalyst 12.2 - Guru3D.com Forums
@hyper OOOOH I did not know they were 2 different things. I have been looking for those options in the Vision Engine Control "Overdrive" tab. -
isn't it the consensus that we ignore 3dmark11 scores?
i only looked at the realworld game results.
i know the i7 can boost fps a little, so I'm eager to see what core i3 hd4000 gaming results are like.
I'm no amd fanboy. I just want best bang for the buck. If hd4000 matches 6620g, that's good enough for me, if that were my budget.
I have to overclock llano by 70% to almost match stock core i5 performance, and that's multithread only. Single thread still sucks.
Now the intel igp matches 6620g.
all for a typical $450 core i5 budget price, which is about the same price basic A8's are going for these days.
the upside of this is that it will drive remaining llano prices way down, and perhaps make trinity cheaper.
I expect trinity cpu will still lag intel by at least 30%, and if you're lucky, you can OC to make it on par in multithread, but single thread will still suck since it is a modified bulldozer core.
Up to 50% better igp will mean 20fps > 30fps, but they both will still suck comparatively.

Ivy Bridge Debuts: Intel Core i7-3770K Review > On-die GPU Performance - TechSpot Reviews
Even tech spot agrees that it doesn't even reach A8s... and they didn't wanted to put A6 and A4, I'm pretty sure they simply would overcome it easily.
BTW, those chips heat the hell of themselves with overclock, amd has now a great opportunity to show how overclock is done right now... and then I can say it again, I will eat I5s ivy bridge for breakfast. -
To anyone with Crossfire working smoothly: Which driver version and application profile versions do you use?
I have tried Catalyst 12.4 + application profile 11.9 CAP4 - DOESN'T WORK
Catalyst 12.4 + application profile 12.3 CAP1 - DOESN'T WORK
Catalyst 12.1 preview + application profile 11.9 CAP4 - DOESN'T WORK
Do I need to do anything with catalyst application profile to get it working better. It makes ZERO different for me. It installs in about 3 seconds and then asks for a reboot.
When switching catalyst versions I make sure to do a total software uninstall, and a driver wipe. Then disable ULPS after new driver install.
I still have not had my stuttering issues fixed in 3dmark11 since 11.6a. -
I believe they put the same HD4000 on desktop in laptop cpu so it does come up with the 6620g.
All depends on how they price.
NB vid does save and work, but need to find slider for 6620g ..., so you can undervolt your board kind of ~~ -
Probably but they will be downclocked, otherwise consumptiopn would go on desktop level and not on notebook.
-
I was expecting hd4000 to beat out the 6620g by a larger margine consistently but atleast it's on the same level now. Now, Trinity will be the envy of all gamers on a budget who are ok playing on integrated graphics.
It's official, Intel Ivybridge is better than all A8s and A6s in all departments of gaming and computing speeds. Laptop choices for budget gamers will now increase 2 fold. -
You quoted this guy but you didn't read his link.
As the Anandtech review shows, the integrated HD4000 performs about the same as the 6620g. -
Nevermind on undervolt the board, instant BSOD when I drag to 9.0 lols
but upvolt doesnt save either although it showing that in Overdrive...?
So It doesnt save, but when drag it down it BSOD....
Edit: the 6620g is OCable Oo? get 5 fps in kombustor when drag to 500mhz in fixed power saving
actually can just drag all the way to 580 ~~ avg 14-15fps compare 10-11 @ 444
Why am I trying these when my warranty end already lols
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-pavilion-notebooks/639355-definitive-dv6z-llano-overclock-optimization-guide-19.html#post8440486
Atom get like 458?
So we can drag the igpu to 580 ~~ a 30% increase
I find his post, he can just drag to 580 aswell
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-pavilion-notebooks/621678-hp-dv6z-a8-3530mx-processor-upgrade-10.html#post8440388
Maybe I should trick Msi burner into let me slide up more and cook my board
Drag to 630 but no fps gain in kombustor , so I guess there is a hard limit or something
drag to 700 same fps, so there is a hiddlen hard limit, but 10fps to 14 is not shabby -
In my humble experience, cpus , and their clock rates, have a rather dramatic effect on 3dmark11 and 3dmark06 scores. And, I'm fairly certain I'm not the only one
Not to mention an integrated graphics chip which is of a necessity, sharing resources with its metaphorically 'in utero' companion....

Punchline from above :
"Despite Intel’s efforts to double graphics performance, the Core i7-3770K cannot outmaneuver AMD’s Llano-based A8-3850. "
http://www.guru3d.com/article/core-i7-3770k-and-3750-review-with-z77/23
there are ton of sites reflecting the same. the new "stupendous" ivy is on average around 3-5 percent faster than its sandy predecessor. on graphics intensive stuff, it runs all over the place, from just a few percent on up to 80-90 percent or so, which would be nice if only the 3000 itself wasn't such a POS.
Anything remotely comparable from amd out games it . -
Anandtech tested a 45W TDP Core i7 against a 35W TDP Llano model.
Moreover, the Llano model tested cannot use 1600MHZ DDR3 RAM.
Here is the Llano laptop used:
AnandTech - Toshiba Satellite P755D: Nearing the End of the Road for Llano
The A8-3520M was also paired with different sized DDR3 SODIMMs - one 2GB and one 4GB,which further reduces performance.
The IB laptop tested used a pair of 4GB 1600MHZ SODIMMs:
AnandTech - Mobile Ivy Bridge and ASUS N56VM Preview
They did not test an MX series Llano A8 which has a higher base CPU clockspeed and can run 1600MHZ DDR3 RAM.
The fact that despite this both the HD4000 and HD6620G are trading blows, with higher power consumption for the HD4000 during tasks which use the IGP and this is not a good sign IMHO.
So basically the 22NM HD4000 with a much more powerful CPU and faster RAM can only trade blows with a 32NM HD6620G with a slower CPU using much slower DIMMs of different sizes. -
But 3dmark doesn't necessarily reflect real world performance. The HD4000 matches the 6620g in games, and that's what really matters.
Though things should get more interesting as Trinity comes out and we see how it performs.
1600mhz has like a 5% improvement on performance and Llano's memory controller supports dual channel with different capacity RAM, so that doesn't affect performance either. The last gen i5-2410m actually had its iGPU clocked higher than the i7-2630qm quad. Since there will be 35W Ivy Bridge dual cores, the TDP thing is a wash. -
Doesn't surprise me that anantech and techspot do biased reviews anyway, what is clear is that only 5% gain was achievable with this new intel architecture at the cost of the overclock... because trying to overclock a processor like this results in temperatures of 90°.... in desktop... and I thought this was a notebook only problem.
with that 5%, I still eat i5s for breakfast. but now I'm looking forward onto the amd arquitecture of the iGPU helping the cpu, that surely is gonna be a blow. -
some games are cpu limited.
AnandTech - The Intel Ivy Bridge (Core i7 3770K) Review
crappier cpu paired with same graphics card, amd loses out. We really have no idea how much cpu power contributes to game performance in today's ivy laptop hd4000 tests.
however, among intel cpu's, graphics performance is similar, so core i3+hd4000 probably won't be far off from benchmarks in today's ivy laptop review -
You realize that that's a CPU benchmark, right? Hence "no render score (CPU test)" at the top.
If you look at the Civ 5 benchmark where stuff is actually rendered (i.e. when you actually play it), the 6650D triples the HD4000 (maybe a driver issue or something?). With these iGPUs, games will rarely be CPU limited. -
Lets, have a look at this article on this website:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...g-benchmarked-various-ram-configurations.html
The variation is between 5% to 23% faster going from different sized 1333MHZ DDR3 DIMMs to equally sized 1600MHZ DDR3 DIMMs.
The thing is that Trinity will use 1600MHZ SODIMMs as a minimum,so I don't really think the HD4000 is that great considering it is using a 22NM process optimised for low power. -
Your link doesn't work. And that was probably for desktop parts anyway. Our own HTWingnut did his own benches which show that the performance difference is minimal. And I've even done my own testing with the 1600mhz kit I had before which had the same results.
edit:
Intel's 22nm so far is turning out to be pretty disappointing but I don't see how that's a negative against the HD4000. It's not Intel's fault they got 22nm parts out before AMD did. And either way that has nothing to do with Trinity using 1600mhz RAM, so I'm not sure what you're trying to say. Also, if you scroll down on HTWingnut's benches, you'll see that the average performance increase was 6%. -
On the Overdrive matter, the desktop Overdrive, i believe its 4.10 in its latest iteration, works perfectly fine on my dv6z. The auto tune in the version included in the 12.3 does also.
