Modded BIOS, there's a couple. Musho here at NBR basically made a bunch with varying GPU and GPU RAM speeds. Then at another site (don't have link atm), they have it with GPU at 740MHz / MEM at 880MHz, removed whitelist for Wifi cards (stock only allows a few wifi cards), and adds some basic fan trip points (i.e. fans start up sooner than later).

Well, weeks later I finally tried testing this with a game: The Last Remnant. It doesn't seem to like this machine much, but I suspect it's more of a display driver issue than OCing: I ran it on 3 settings -- my higher tier overclock (2.4 with about 1.0875 V), one at 2350 and slightly higher voltage, and the default.

2 freezes with the overclock/undervolt settings, and oddly, a blue screen with the default stock settings. Seems like it's more of a display driver issue than my settings. Going to try to run Dragon Age: Origins and see if I get the same thing. Hoping it's just something particular to that game..

Edit: Happened with Dragon Age: Origins too.

Wonder if the latest drivers just hate these games.

If games are freezing up then your CPU is not stable. Does your CPU crash under prime95 or IntelBurn?

It didn't freeze or crash at all under prime95 or IntelBurn. In fact, for the time that it ran the games, the temps were lower than they were under those two.

In fact, as I mentioned, it even froze (then ultimately bluescreened) on the factory settings, so I'm pretty confused.

Edit: I went back and installed the 11.11c drivers and it blue-screened even faster.. I'm confused now. This is -without- an overclock/undervolt, and the blue screen is saying something about the display adapter. Something about at1kmpag.sys.

Uninstall all your graphics drivers using the control panel and then device manager and trying reinstalling. Otherwise I think it might be a hardware problem.

Did that, actually. Uninstalled 12.1c through the device manager, reinstalled 11.11c (since that seemed to help people), then tried again and it was worse.

I was worried it might be a hardware issue.. good thing it's under warranty through HP, I suppose (plus square trade). Looks like I'll be calling HP soon.

Are you OCing the GPU? If you aren't, you could always try doing a factory restore to rule out if its software related.

I didn't mess with the GPU at all.

Hmm.. I did consider doing a factory (well, minimal restore) to see if it's software related. What bare minimum things should I install, though, to be sure it's not anything software related while still attempting to run the games?

Just try using the minimized system recovery and seeing if it works then.

..And for whatever reason, the minimal installation didn't work. Redoing that now again. Urgh.

Edit: Update -- I did a minimal system restore and the only 'extra' things that I have installed on the computer right now are Steam and the Last Remnant. I'm really baffled here: The game runs perfectly right now. No OCing, undervolting, or even the more recent drivers installed. Whatever stock drivers HP has on there right now by default seem to agree with the game just fine.

So.. I'm pretty puzzled as to what could have caused those repeated bluescreens before. The only factor I can really identify are the 11.11c / 12.1 drivers: It automatically updated it to the F21 bios, and it was actually running stock settings when it bluescreened..so I guess the wisest course of action for now is just to keep the drivers that are on there currently. Might be a bit more conservative with undervolting/clock settings, since TLR / DA:O seem to run fine even with default settings.

Looks like it was a software issue after all (possibly).. or so I hope.

I'd be all over an SSD, tho for 150 which generation is it? I gotta say the gloss panel suits me just fine, especially with EDID and recalibration. Can get by GREAT with the lowest couple brightness bars in my (dim), and high brightness does a good job overriding glare or washout.

We're not doing Christmas until New Year's, so I had a quiet day at home. Ran the battery down twice, roughly 4 hours playing Oblivion and closer to 5 watching 1080p video. (Stock clocks/voltages) If someone could compare their T notebook against those, we'd have a ballpark difference.

Settings were Power Saver, Coolsense "Quiet" profile, Oblivion on integrated graphics/Medium button/HDR/1366x768, all video was 1080p animation in .mkv containers/soft subtitles/h.264_8bit_High_Profile/FLAC, gross average ~217MB per every ten minutes.

I was especially impressed with Oblivion's perfectly smooth performance, temps never rose and the fan never increased in speed. iGPU will run a lot of games up through Crysis 2 and beyond, but I'll mostly use it for older games and DXVA. I should re-run the two use cases with undervolt, may get 1/2hr or more improvement.

Calc, on my Dv7t, I played Need For Speed for about 4 hours on battery yesterday, on the IGP, on full brightness, w/about 15% battery left at the end, so if I had lowered the brightness and was on power saver, I could've gone longer. However, the gameplay was choppy, so that makes up for it.

Its the Intel 320 SATA 2 generation. Also there is the Corsair Force Sata 3 120 GB for 124.99. I don't think I am going to jump on them though, I cannot justify that much just to have windows and a few apps load faster.

Personally, I could justify getting the Momentus XT 750GB .... but it is 229.99

Likewise rmacgowa. For me a big advantage would be working with modded Bethesda games, or certain screwing around with video.

kevmanw, the other difference is I have the stock weaksauce battery that comes with the 6135dx. So that would indicate a roughly 2x difference in power efficiency when gaming. Though you have the bigger screen and etc. I was playing at 80% brightness, maybe higher. Character accidentally turned into a vampire because I didn't watch my status, so I've just rolled with it and been skulking around at night.

EDIT: geant, make sure you have 11.12 CAP and also try fiddling with the new per-game settings in CCC. I haven't picked up BF3 yet so can't confirm.

I'm a little confused over this whitelist thing; does using this modified bios allow you to use any sort of WiFi card, or such?

Also, which CAP should I use? I mean so far, everything I've tried to run (mostly being LR, probably DA:O when I test that) seems to be running fine, so debating if I should really even touch anything as far as drivers go. If I've learned anything from my desktop, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Exactly! I can easily justify paying 80-100 for the screen, I just wish there was an easier way to get the cable. HP parts store says "unavailable to order"... and the only online retailer with any in stock would cost me $80 after shipping is all said and done... and they wont ship any out till January... O.O

The damn CABLE totally destroys my willingness to buy! I wonder if we can find a cheap 1080p cable meant for another laptop.....

For all you guys with SSDs, can you confirm that the main sata port is SATA 3 and that you are getting close to full speed from it?

I have the mobo that is lacking USB 3.0 ports, so I hope they didn't cheap out and put only SATA 2 ports :S

I am rather confused, because the general DV6 manual says the hard drive interfaces with a SATA 2 port... yet our A60/A70 chipset says it supports SATA 3.

Where did you find the cables??!! LINK PLEASE. And can you tell us what the model of the keyboard was?

I am about to jump on this SSD but if you can link me the cable ASAP that could change things.

EDIT: Oh, was it this one? http://www.alinc.com/Display-Cable-Kit-ALU-FHD.html

International shipping from these guys is Insane.... that "45 dollar cable" would cost me about 75 bucks after it is all said and done.

hi guys. I just got the dv6-6145dx for christmas (being shipped) and I was wonder if it will be able to run games like CS:S and TF2 at decent FPS (30-40, hopefully)

    the specs are:

1.5 GHz quad core (A8-3500M) (2.4 with turbo, not sure if this actually works though)
    8 GB Ram
    6620g APU

also, can the A8 be overclocked?

    thanks

those are really old games, i think anything can just about play them lol

I gotta play the waiting game with shipping for mine, since the holidays slowed it down, ground shipping from florida to where I am at in california, hopefully it beats new years weekend before it gets slowed down again from holiday.

Already got planned what I want to do with it, minimal recovery, custom bios flash, repaste with mx4, move my bf3, deus ex hr, skyrim, saints row the third over to it. (im thinking it will be more powerful than my aging desktop watercooled [email protected], watercooled/voltmodded 8800gt, 2x320gb raid 0, 4gb ram).

I kinda want to put a hole in the back casing right above the fan for better cooling but I don't want to cut into something soo new lol

CPU- About the same, maybe a bit better
    GPU - Definitely better

If you cut a hole, you'll reduce the CPU temp but raise the temp on everything else. These are designed to "rake" the air over critical components. (I wouldn't do it.) A laptop cooler is a better solution.

It helps. Although holes over the CPU and GPU helped the most. Cutting a slot in the fan shroud to "blow" air over the components works by cooling the CPU and GPU more too, but definitely adds a noticeable temperature increase in the entire inside of the case. I recommend against doing that. I ended up replacing the entire cooling assembly because my palmrest would get too hot. Stock system ran > 90C at 2.2GHz full load (Prime95 Large FFT + Kombustor), with mod 2.4GHz at full load ~80C with cooler.

So, anyone have the screenshot handy of the K10STAT I'd need to have a solid, full-time 2.2ghz OC? Or a table of all the info I'd need plus any tips to make it availalbe on startup? (I'm not likely to run the laptop on battery for any length of time, so not concerned with battery life.)

I've read this thread so much by now I'm going blind. For me, it's grown past useful search for latest and greatest information, which is why I wanted to write a guide specifically for the dv6-6135dx that could be periodically updated. (I write computer tech training material for a living, BTW.)

Geant I had the same problem a few days ago. Go to control panel, hardware and sound, then devices and printers. You will see the overall laptop as part of "devices", with yellow exclamation mark over it.

Right click and choose troubleshoot, It should reinstall the controller drivers. Fixed the problem for me completely

ALSO, how much is the LCD cable from hp.com, would any of you kind Americans be willing to buy me the DV6 1080p LCD cable and ship it cross-border? That way I'm not stuck with a $30 shipping fee. I would be more than willing to transfer some funds via paypal.... (and include a little extra for your troubles)

My laptop does not have an exclamation mark. I attempted troule shooting but there dose not seem to be a problem. My usb works fine after i restart. Every time i close my laptop and it goes to sleep, then locks up when i open it, then usb wont work until i reboot and upon shutting down it will blue screen with BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER. I know it has to be the crappy usb 3.0 drivers, i would not mind disabling htem if it gets sleep to work but anyone else having this problem?

Edit: Im thinking about forgeting minimal install and do windows 7 fresh because this is a pain in the !

    @rmac
HP parts is charging 55.63 cable with 11.25 shipping.(US)

I still cant decide if I want to jump on the thing . The cable cost half the screen, more like 2/3... If i get a external i get more workspace for same price.

    @clark
There is multiple way if you dont need much undervolt and step.

    1. fusiontweaker service/k10 start up + windows power plan, set processor min/max to 100%
    2. " + disable cool N quiet
    3. " + K10clock control

I prefer to use fusiontweaker to auto load pstate profile bcuz it is less work and more stable as a service (it seems to be but not a big deal)
Using window control allow you to change power plan when you need battery etc.
k10 control is annoying with sleep and closing the program etc .bcuz k10 doesn't minimize to tray and you must right click on tray icon to do anything .
fusiontweaker control is buggy for me.

2.2Ghz usually stable with 1.025-1.075 It seems .

I am not sure what you mean there. I open K10 using a shortcut having -StayOnTray (and -nw for no window) parameter(s) and I have faced any problem.

Even If system goes of to sleep, on resuming back K10 always runs and functions as expected.
