Hey folks,
I'm back in Tallahassee now and have been playing with my new dv7t for a couple of days now. Installed CoD 4 and it runs awesome.
I have been reading some posts about Norton taking up a lot of memory and stuff and people doing "clean installs". Should I take Norton of my machine? If I do I will be worried about viruses, spyware, etc. I also payed for a three year subscription through HP.
I haven't done anything except install CoD 4 and Google Sketchup on my machine so far.
What progams can / should I remove for better performance? Or just do a "clean install"? Please let me know. Is a clean install easy to do for someone is not very computer savvy?
Thanks -
I'm not trying to degrade your investment with Norton, but it really isn't one of the better anti-virus programs. A better antivirus program would be NOD 32. It may not be the best but it does one he11 of a job.
-
Hey infamous do you mind answering my question about the display?
-
I feel the 1680x1050 is just right. There's not too much strain and I don't have to move my head really close to the monitor. -
I stuck with Norton way longer than I should have. Probably out of a sense of loyalty since I had been using it long before Symantec bought it and began to s**** it up. About three years ago a MS techie recommended NOD32. I gave it a shot and was amazed. I can do a deep scan and simultaneously use the computer for games, graphics intensive apps, etc. with no problems (try that with Norton).NOD32 is completely transparent. Just set it and forget it and it efficiently does it's job without bogging down the computer. To demo it's efficiency to friends I intentionally hit some notorious Warez sites and NOD32 catches all the deadly stuff!
IMHO NOD32 is the best AV available - I understand Kapersky is great but I'm so enthusiastic about NOD32 I have no reason to try it.
To all of you suffering under the yoke of Norton,try NOD32 and you will be amazed.
Please don't thank me. The knowledge that I have improved the quality of your lives is enough.BTW, I have no connection with ESET (NOD32 publisher).

I prefer NOD 32 over all antivirus programs. It's great for the working individual.
-
Infamous22, do you know if the dv7t supports AHCI?
-
My previous two laptops both had 1920x1200 resolution with the last being my trusty Dell Inspiron 9300. The resolution was heavenly. In fact, I almost did not purchase the dv7t due to the lower resolution. I wanted every bit of screen real estate i could eek out when doing my development work.
I also have a couple of desktops (one is wife's, one is mine) with 22" monitors that, as Infamous pointed out, run 1680x1050 resolution. The lack of pixels never seemed to really bother me there which is why I finally got over my concerns and went with the dv7t.
First, will you notice a difference? YES, after all it is 25% less pixels. It was a little bit of a transition for me. I did not feel like I had to get any closer to my monitor with the 1920x1200 nor did I have any sort of eye strain (and I'm not as young as some of you). That said, the lower resolution is not a deal breaker and it isn't all bad. The only times I really notice or miss it are when I'm viewing or editing photos or doing development activities. For gaming, watching DVDs, surfing the web or working in MS Office, the lower 1680x1050 resolution is perhaps a touch better.
Obviously, everyone's opinion and experience will vary. My opinion - I would have preferred a dv7t with 1920x1200 resolution if it had been offered but have no regrets. I evaluated a lot of laptops with higher resolution options and, for the overall package, I still prefer the dv7t. -

after some research the past few weeks I finally went with the DV7T. I found a great coupon that knocked my price down from $2333 to $1633!! so after taxes and shipping and all i paid 1800.
it is my first laptop, i primarily use desktop systems, but figured I should get a laptop. I got it configured with...
* Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
* Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9600 (2.80GHz)

* 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
* 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
* 320GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (160GB x 2) with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
* Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
* HP Color Matching Keyboard
* Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
* No Modem
* SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
* No TV Tuner w/remote control
* 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
* Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
* System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit)
* HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope -
Anyone know how the temperatures on the Dv7t with the Geforce 9600M GT is? I've heard the Dv5's have a heat issue, so I'm wondering if the same applies to this machine.
-
Here's my analogy between the DV5 and DV7 heat comparison:
DV5:
12 people in a closet emitting heat with one 6 inch fan. The closet stays warm and even heats up pretty badly. People (components) are close together generating heat.
DV7:
12 people in a bedroom with a 8 inch fan. It's not very cool, but the heat dissipation is better. The people (components) are further apart in a bigger room that allows for evenly distributed heat if any at all. -
So I take it the Dv7t's temperatures aren't that bad. Can you run GPU-Z and tell me what the displayed temperatures are? -

Man that coupon would have saved me an additional $250-$300. I used a $400 off coupon and thought THAT was a good deal.

omega - call and tell them to apply it - they may refund you the $. it's on their return page - if you ordered/recieved your laptop within 21 days, and you have a coupon, they will apply it to that order and give you a refund.
as for me, im returning my dv7t as of tomorrow. reasons:
1) too much glare for me in the day time on the infinity screen
2) the tv tuner isn't worth $1. the picture and audio is sooo choppy it's not even funny. if i keep the laptop, i'll probably buy an external tuner......
3) i want the fingerprint reader so i can save my wrists from carpal tunnel when i log into websites
but, darn it, this new coupon code makes me want to call them, tell them to apply it, and keep the laptop.
overall, the laptop is a 9 out of 10 for me. i have not used anything this fast in my life. you can not throw enough apps at it to even get it close to being "slow" and that's crazy!
although - i will be calling HP at lunch time today. if they will apply this new coupon code to my purchase, i am going to keep the unit. -
Do you know if the TV Tuner came with a coaxial connector?
The Infinity display can't be that bad. You must live in a department store for it to reflect so much, jeez. My underground lair is awesome.... muahahaha
You're really just telling me that I waited two weeks for nothing but a blu-ray drive and a crappy TV Tuner lol. I wanted to do a comparison between the two screen displays. Don't ruin it for me! I know people that can kill your people. -
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
^LOLOL!
#1 - yes it came with the coax connector. in the laptop box, the coax connector (for some reason) was in the same bag as the laptop battery... i found that to be odd.
#2 - since i use my laptop at night mostly, the glare wont be that big of a problem so my new unit that i ordered will have the infinity display as well
#3 - my people run fast and have new running shoes. so we're going to be hard to catch.
so im returning my unit and i ordered another one!!! this NB8821 coupon is soooo crazy
my new unit:
HP Pavilion Entertainment dv7t customizable Notebook PC
vista ultimate
T9600 (2.80GHz)
17.0"BrightView Infinity Display (1680 x 1050)
4GB RAM
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
320 GB hard drive
Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
lightscribe burner
8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
HP Notebook QuickDock
the unit came out to $1,595 after the NB8821 coupon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i got the docking station too so the total is $1695 before taxes.
i used the $400 coupon code before, and with this one, i save an additional (almost) $300.
THIS IS MADNESSSSS! -
hey was it easy for you to get a RMA number for your return. did you go through a lot of hassle with the customer service
-
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
^ no hassle at all because i had a genuine issue with my unit - the crappy reception of the tv tuner. the quality was awesome when it worked but it was sooo choppy. it's comparable to playing like a dvd on an older computer -where you will have 5 seconds of good picture+audio then 5 seconds of audio/video lag. complete and utter waste of $100 for their integrated tuner. i tried using it, with the antenna attached, in various places at my apartment (by the window, in another room, etc) and it was still terrible on ALL channels, including channels where my signal strength was at 5 bars.
im going to get a usb tuner instead when my new unit arrives.
now the wait starts again but im less antsy because i know the unit is superb. -
Well good. Now you can't argue about "Buyer's remorse" or how I call it "The TSD HP PMS."
You'll get this notebook and regret not getting the blu-ray drive which is important for the new BIG transition. You'd be missing out on a lot without it. I just don't want you having another menstrual cycle on us. The first one was pretty intense. I'd probably die.
Why did you get the Infinity display if you are so anti reflective? -
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
^ roflmao
i got the display because it is absolutely stunning in pitch black darkness, ie, for watching a movie before going to bed. i will not be using the unit in the day time much - since this is a desktop replacement for home. the trade-off of having glare the couple of times i'll use it in the day is well worth the quality of the picture in night conditions. at night, there is absolutely ZERO reflection and everything you watch/view looks like it's popping out of the screen. the quality is very very crisp!
re: blue-ray -- im not much of a movie nut (i've only bought 3 dvd movies in the past 10 years, no joke.) i use netflix most of the time so i dont think i'll be missing out much w/o the blueray drive. besides, at $25 a pop, i dont see myself buying any blueray movies... l0l
i dont think it was hp pms - just the screen really got to me. that's the 1 thing i truly hated about the unit - but it's performance in low light/night conditions is truly worth it. -
I give it a week in, the point where cancellations are no longer accepted.
Stop replying... Do some work. I'm trying to fry some water, so leave me alone! -
Hey, thanks for pointing out that coupon, I called in and got an additional $200 off my total. I should be getting my new system this afternoon! Yay!
I'm still not sure if I got the best price, even with the APP discount, the 5% coupon, and the price protection discount, it comes out to $1,998.95. Hrm.
What do you guys think? Should I try to get more discounts out of this? I might just place a new order if I don't like the Infinity screen...
* Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)

* Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
* No High speed 56K modem port
* $100 OFF Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
* No TV Tuner w/remote control -
Forgot to mention that total also includes the ADP warranty, so my actual total is $1,895. Still... sounds like you got a wicked coupon-stacking deal timesquaredesi!
-
He got a nice deal. You should've gone with the 320GB 7200 RPM drive.
-
I thought about that for a long time and decided that I would be much happier with 640GB of storage, and really the speed difference is negligible, I promise. I do a lot of stuff that requires tons of hard drive space, so it's really a win for me
And I didn't miss out too much on a good deal I guess, since I'm getting $100 (in about 3 months) through FatWallet. I've used them before and the cash always comes on time, no mailing or other crap involved. Just an easy, free 5% discount!
EDIT: It just got delivered... on my way to pick it up! I'll try to post some pictures comparing it to my Ultra Brightview dv8000 tonight. -
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
pdx - no stacking coupons - just the NB8821 code was applied i believe.
total price for laptop ONLY = $2,279
price after applying NB8821 = $1,595
total savings with just the NB8821 coupon = $684
they did not consider/include the $400 off coupon from my previous laptop order which is fine because this deal is killer.
so total breakdown:
$1,595 for the laptop
$100 for the docking station (it's $129 but i got a $30 rebate)
$142.03 in taxes
-----------------------------
$1,838.01 grand total
specs on the unit i ordered:
vista ultimate
t9600
17" wsxga infinity
320gb disk (single drive)
4gb ram
512mb video
lightscribe burner
wireless agn+btooth
webcam + fingerprint
and the docking station (excluded from the figure above) -
I have two DV7's...one with Infinity and one without. It might be a better comparison that way.
-
YES! I just called up about the new 30% off coupon and I am getting the full difference back compared to when I used the $400 coupon (about $120). It was hassle-free (other than them initially transferring me to the rebate department, which couldn't help me) and only took about 30-45 minutes.
Timesquaredesi, did you use the the TV tuner connected to a coax cable at all? If you did, was it still choppy then? If it works fine for that I will be happy enough since there is only one HDTV broadcast where I am now (PBS) anyway. I got the tuner so that I wouldn't have to lug my TV back to college. -
Hi there, btw i'm from the uk and i'm going to get one of these. However in the uk we have pre-set model, like the rest of europe. So in a few days or so i'm goin to order the Dv7 1020EA from a retail store
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF06a/321957-321957-3329744-64354-64354-3744231.html
Can't wait to get it, it will be mostly for work in uni and entertainment puroposes (i.e. movies, music,gaming etc) and it will be my first laptop!! Therefore you have the right to call me a noob.
btw is it ready to use straight out of the box or do i need to set up some stuff? -
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
re: coax cable - that's the one thing i didnt try although i may try that tonite before sending the unit back. i figured at 5 bars for signal strength via the antenna, there was no reason for the video to be choppy. i will check this out tonite .
regardless, i will be sending this back and awaiting my new monster. l0l -
I ordered my dv7t on 8-8-08, and recieved it on the 22nd. If I call with the 30% coup. number, will they refund me the amount?
-
p.s. : I did not use any sort of coupon originally
-
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
yes they will - call up.
-
Hell, with this new coupon I am going to sell the one that the case manager built for me on Fleabay even if I do take a loss and buy a loaded one.
To be able to get a 2.8 loaded with bluray for around $1650 is sick in my opinion -
This new coupon makes the dv7t an INSANE deal.
-
Well just ordered my smoking deal of a laptop! I put the laptop my case manager ordered (which should ship tomorrow) on Fleabay
Heres what I just ordered!!!! SWEET!
Here is what I decided to sell on ebay:
-
Whenever I log on/off of my computer, it keeps downloading updates. Do I really need these? Should I set it to not download the updates to not take up space. Also, whenever it automatically finds them, it takes up memory if I don't download them. Just cancel updates alltogether???
-
-
Well, after hemming and hawing for too long on the $400 coupon, I decided not to wait when I read about the 30% off coupon.

Those US specs I see, together with those US prices... Unbelievable. Too bad HP doesn't do that in the Netherlands. They seriously would wipe away most of the competition. For what you guys are getting and paying, especially with the euro-dollar exchange... Well, it is almost heartbreaking. I would only wish they at least would serve CTO here.
-
Well, I was in the midst of taking some comparison shots (coming soon) between my dv7 and dv8000t when I noticed a small crack on the backside of my brand new Infinity display! That sealed the deal for me and I ordered the replacement, with a wireless printer, all for $1750. I'm glad I re-ordered, I got a better deal and hopefully a better screen!
In a couple months I can report the purchase to FatWallet and get an additional $87.50 back. Yay! -
first thing i always do, is switch automatic updates off. i dont want someone who has never seen my laptop, telling me when to update it
-
I am having to return my laptop in order to change my coupon. They offered to give me $150 off my price. The new coupon would save me $321.20, so I have an RA# for a laptop I haven't recieved yet.
Ordered a new one...bigger, better, CHEAPER! -
Just wanted to join (though I think I have an old account but couldn't seem to gen up the pwd) and say HUGE thanks for the e-coupon (and to whoever posted it first).
I've been planning on scoring us a new notebook for "work" (i.e., pR0n and WOW) and had made up my mind for an HP. I like the design, the feature set is excellent, and I really dig on HP equipment.
So anyway, I waited for the new DV7T to come out with the newer procs and better video (9xxx series). So it was finally time to buy, and I do a quick once over here and I found that current coupon while reading owners feedback!
I just finished my order: this is a hell of a machine for the price:
HP Pavilion Entertainment dv7t customizable Notebook PC
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26 GHz)
17.0" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
FREE Upgrade to 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive from 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
HP Color Matching Keyboard
Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
$100 OFF Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Came to $1263.00 (plus Florida tax and we paid for quicker shipping).
I got $541 off! I almost ordered this weekend and the same machine would have been ~$391 more (and free shipping, though with expedited shipping that wouldn't have mattered much).
I realize the 4GB won't be fully usable on 32 bit Vista, but I needed to stick with 32 bit for some specialized printer/scanner drivers for one of our apps (I own a development shop) and figured it would be nice to be in place for later.
The BD drive is a little bit of a extra, but we have a PS3 and a decent amount of BD movies (and the ones we get from Netflix), so I thought a portable player that we can also connect to the TV upstairs would be pretty nice (and with the discount, it was "free").
Thanks again!
DT
