hahahaha - is it also taller, better, faster, stronger? LOL

RMA on a laptop you haven't seen yet. that's a good one.

i have heard that hp does offers like that - like, they'll ask you basically how much it will take for you to keep the laptop. it's like deal or no deal. forget the banker!

    =P

    Lol

Anyways this new coupon saved me a total of $700+ and that's fantastic when you compare it to the $350 that I originally received. I had to cancel my first order and reorder it which pissed me off since now my build date is Sept 4 but it's all good.

^ well worth the wait. with that money you saved, you can go nucking futs with other accessories / essentials.

last week, i got my original dv7t in ($2,200) as well as a 750gb extern drive ($130) and a 5-speaker logitech z-5500 surround sound system ($250) as well as several other small things i needed (8gb flash drives, unreal tournement 3, etc) .....

with the savings on this new unit i ordered, i dont feel as bad spending so much at one time! hahaha. i approx 3 grand within a week with my dv7t and all other stuff i bought.

    :-X

Yeah, they wouldn't budge on their offer of $150. I told her that I was going to return their laptop and reorder an new one. Didn't matter....so that's what I did, and I got a biggger HDD + a docking station and still saved $200 (plus I took their survey at the end ;) ),

I'm a little upset that I have to wait 2 more weeks for my laptop, but it isn't a necessity, just a "want."

dude, since you're within the 21 days, tell them you want to return this laptop because of _______________ <- insert reason there.

you will get your full money refunded back. as the return processes, you can order this one.

so right now, hp has 2 dv7t orders from me. the one dv7t that i am returning and the one i ordered today with the NB8821 coupon.

it's up to you if it's worth it to return. in my case, it definitely was since i had always considered returning the unit for something much higher in specs.

    in short-

    1) call them tell them u want to return the laptop u have right now
    2) they will give you an RMA number - just print the label, stick it to the box and ship your unit back
    3) at the same time you are on the phone with them getting the rma, order another unit with this coupon code.

    taht's what i did.

I tried it 2x. The first time it didn't work then I reentered it (in all caps) and it worked. I'm sure that there are a bunch of orders that are being canceled or discounts given due to this coupon...(maybe that is why they don't acknowledge it?)

    Saved $700+.

Yea, the guy I talked to said I could return it and re-order another one right then with the NB8821 code and get the discount.

I thought about doing that and then realized after paying for classes, rent, utilities, etc. plus the charge of my current laptop already on my card, there is now way in hell I could afford to reorder another at the moment. And if I send it back and then wait for my account to be credited, then I am past the 21 day policy. Not to mention the code would probably be expired by then. Oh well... still got a rockin' cpu. Just sucks that all I got was a dammn student discount. I WISH I WOULD HAVE FOUND THIS FORUM BEFORE I ORDERED!!! I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW COUPS EXISTED!!!

    CoD 4 time....

i got my return RMA + reordered right over the phone. u walk through the customization menus on hp.com and the dude on the phone did too. once we both arrived at the same end price, i was like great, now order that for me.

as for the tv tuner like i said earlier today --------------

i tried it out connecting it to my cable line. there was still lag/interruptions as there were when i had just used the antenna but it was far less.

the quality of the picture though was absolutely crap. in my case, the tv tuner lets u watch tv, yeah, but it wasnt near what i thought it would be. it was like i was watching satallite tv during a storm - pauses, hiccups, interruptions, etc.

so my new dv7t does not have the integrated tv tuner. so im thinking about getting either the hp usb tv tuner (whcih is under their accessories when u customize a laptop) or getting one from another vendor.

They tried to give me push back on that coupon and say that i would have to cancel my order then re-order. I told the guy that it didn’t make ANY since to cancel the whole order when my laptop is suppose to ship out in 1-2 days. He put me on hold and got approval to credit my account when I receive my laptop and noted it to my account. You just have to really push the issue. I threatened to cancel the whole order and take my business elsewhere if they did not honor this request….they did.

    Ok the coupon works,
I called them back, this time they said the coupon works, but i cant use it,
and after a long discussion, they refused to give me the coupon and told me to order a new one and use the coupon, and then return this one when i get it,
This is not logical at all, they will lose about $300 for shipping, plus they will get stuck with a returned laptop,
    ???????????????????????
    I don't get it

^they lose nothing on shipping because they have very high-end / high-volume shipping agreements with fed ex. they pay probably like $10 per unit for shipping (if that - im just guessing) which is a drop in the bucket compared to their money made.

secondly, it doesnt make sense, but if that's how they want to do it, let them.

after i ordered my 1st dv7t, i called the next day and told them i wanted to change the specs. they said sorry, they can only be changed after the unit arrives at your home. i was like what the he11! at our level, the level of the customer, this seems highly illogical but i am sure that to their business department, it's something that works in their favor.

    re: ordering via fone--

i prefered ordering over the phone so i knew exactly what i was getting.

ie - they have the in-slot remote as an option on the dv7t for $19.99 but i thought that high-end unit should already come with it.

so before i ordered, i asked them about it and they said sorry, its an error. the remote does come with the dv7t but for some reason it's still a 19.99 option on the website.

so you know there are customers everywhere who paid 19.99 for the remote even though it comes with the unit.

that's one example where calling was better than simply ordering online.

i too wonder what happens to returned (but 100% functional) units. do they get parted out and used in other models which come in for repairs? are they dismantled and have the parts return to the manufacturer?

or are they collecting $2,000 laptops in stacks and stacks over in memphis tennessee and once in a while have a huge HP thrift sale where grandmothers are fighting with other grandmothers as to who picked up the highly-optioned dv7t first?

    roflmao!

    Is that correct?
If it is, can you tell me the link on hp website, where it says that

The only problem though is that HP is so HORRIBLE when it comes to returns. They're like, "We have your return on the cancel log". ***? Why oh why can't they send an email or I dunno CALL the plant that manufacturing these laptops all the way in China or wherever and say, "STOP production IMMEDIATELY on Order ____"

It just boggles my mind that their whole process for canceling an order is like playing a game of Russian Roulette. There's a 50% chance that everything will go alright and your order will be stopped quickly and your money refunded. On the other hand there's a 50% chance that your laptop will be built, shipped, and delivered despite you NOT wanting it and then you have to wait for it be shippped BACK to HP and then 3 to 5 days for the money to be credited back to your account.

    It's just so frustrating....

But yeah I"m like you. I"ve got 2 dv7t orders right now. 1 which is in production although I canceled it this morning and then another that I order and charged to a different bank account.

I'm praying that they don't ship the laptop and cancel this order very soon without me having to go thru the whole "RMA" process yet again.

I'm sure this coupon will expire soon.
with number of call hp are getting.

Marketing its a great game, if you know how to play,
I know i used to work in it
And hp knows what its doing

    the one 'trick' they use:

if you spec out a laptop, there are 2 figures shown ---

i thought that the large price in red is the cost of the laptop and that's what they will apply the coupon codes to but IT IS NOT!

they apply the code to the figure before the 'instant rebate' price which, to me, is a bit deceptive.......

like if you click customize a laptop, the default price of the laptop is reduced 6 to 10%.... so when you apply a coupon code, they actually RAISE the price of the laptop (6 to 10%, whatever it is) and THEN apply the coupon.

so if the price is $1479 before rebates, and $1,329 after rebates, they will apply the coupon code to the $1479....

it's a slight of hand sort of thing, not many people will notice, but i did. l0l

regardless, the discounts are good and i still find it hard to find a similarly spec'd machine for roughly the same price from another company...

They say right when you apply the coupon code that the best discount will be applied. The net delta with the code is still better than without - i.e., just using online discount (mine was $391 better that the $150 "regular" sale price). That don't raise the price, they just start back at the reference MSRP before *any* discount is factored in.

It's just like most retail that doesn't allow "stacked" or compounded discounts.

Side note: I'm sort of debating whether I really needed the BD drive. Since we already have a player on the main TV and not a whole lot of need to watch them outside of that area. I guess I could go in and change the order [?] or call? That's $150 (minus whatever the rebate discounted it - 30%?).

^ agreed, it's still an awesome deal. like, when you look at it though, it's a natural assumption that the deduction in price via coupon is on the value in red and not the total.

well, that's the way it appeared to me anyway. l0l.

I would if you have the credit/funds available order the new one IMMEDIATELY and RMA the other as soon as you get it. That 2.0 to 2.5 difference for $57 is HUUUUGE! In the long run, your going to basically be future proofing (to an extent) your laptop. That coupon could be gone by tomorrow then you'll be kicking yourself forever.

Ahh cool. I ordered ours yesterday too and it also has an expected build date of Sept 4th, so maybe ours will get here a little quicker too.

We also paid for 2 days "business" shipping - I was concerned about the 5-7 days transit time if it did ship on the 4th or even a little late. We need it for a trip to DC around the week of the 15th, and I need to prep it with some specific tools for the road (some Dev, VPN/RD and SQL odds and ends).

well, it was about 3 days turn around from when the status went from "shipped" to being in my hands.

i remember on a wednesday it said that it was shipped. from wed to thurs, it went from china to alaska then overnight, from thurs to friday, it went from alaska to nyc. it was extremely quick and that was with their free shipping.

    Hey guys,

So I'm happy to say that I'm loving my dv7t and it's been running awesome. I haven't had any heat problems or anything.

So, just wondering, what apps/programs/games do you recommend and have running on your dv7ts??

    Thanks

BTW, what is the best general maintenance program?

i didnt have any heat related problems with my dv7t either. i noticed it would only run hot when i would play unreal 3 - otherwise, it's surprisingly 'cool' . browsing the net, using word excel (u know, the apps that require 4gb ram! LOL) and maybe playing music, the cpu or video cards are not tax'd so there is less heat being produced.

^ I think the heat issue is related to the hard drive speed,
So both of you have 5400 RPM hard drives,
I think my replacement laptop will still be warm at the left of the touch pad,
Since i chose the 7200 RPM,
Does anyone who have the 7200 RPM hard drives agree with me?

I have 7200RPM drives and they run cooler than the girl next store.

    TSD,

I'm not sure what problems you're having with the integrated TV Tuner, but it is WAY better than the expresscard TV Tuner I bought for my DV9700. It's not choppy for me, except on one channel. The reception is better than the $160 card I bought lol...wow

I'll make a video of it later lol. No one believes me I bet.

i definitely believe you - i just wonder what the problem is then. when the cable wire is connected to my cable box, reception is perfect.

surprisingly, with the tuner antenna plugged in, i watched one of the public channels that's broadcasted in HD (WB11) and the picture was gorgeous but choppy as hell. when i connected the cable line, the picture quality was terrible (like watching it on an 80s tv without an antenna) and the choppy-ness was minimal.

not sure what the prob was =( i should have taken a video of both.

You have to improve the reception by scanning for the cable channels. Otherwise, you're just randomly viewing unscanned channels.

The choppiness can be fixed by placing the antennae differently. That one channel is better now that I put the antennae on my window sill.

The Blu-ray drive is nice. Now I gotta get a pay raise so I can buy a Blu-Ray disc. lol

I'm definitely liking this TV Tuner. I'm happy it's integrated. I can tote around an enormous TV with me everywhere. :)
The included Tuner remote is nice as well, just a fingerprint magnet like its mother.

You know I went back and re-config'd the exact machine with DVD vs. BD and it was only a $100 difference, even though the add for the BD is +$150. The discount must be variable based on config/price [?] I was extra happy since that was a tad frivolous for a work related machine.

I buy them only when they're discounted, or 3-for-2's *or* used from good known sources. Plus we're on Netflix and a good number of our rentals come through as BD!

    [edit for a question!]

I noticed during my config the TV Tuner wasn't listed as an option. Well it was listed as a "non-option" :D

I don't think I would've considered it .... though having a portable 17" HD set for like the bathroom could be pretty cool!

    [edit #2]

Yeah, I called HP and if I understand the gent who was helping me, it's just not an option at this time - I guess maybe a supplier change or something? Of course, then he started trying to sell me on a 1,000 year extended warranty...

has anyone bought an extra hard drive for their dv7t yet? i ask because i will be purchasing a second drive to put windows xp on but am not sure what the specs are compatible with the dv7t...

the only info i can get is that the dv7t uses a 5400rpm sata drive but that's it. is it sata-150? what are the dimensions of the drives that can fit in there?

i ask because i am considering getting the "Western Digital 320 GB Scorpio Sata 5400 Rpm 8MB 2.5IN" but am not 100% sure if it'll fit or be compatible with the sata specs on the dv7t.

    any input is much appreciated.

    YYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

My 2nd order for the dv7t that was over $2,000 using that other coupon has been CANCELED! Thank God! I was so afraid they were going to ship it like they did the first time despite me calling to cancel it as soon as possible.

Now the money is being credited back to my card and the 3rd order I placed in in production! God I'm loving life right now.

Now if I could only sell this vaio notebook...

Does the TV tuner remote use the integrated IR sensor or one that connects separately via USB?

^ IR connection for the remote to control the integrated tv tuner.

the tv tuner + remote have nothing to do with the usb or any other ports.

yeah, what TSD said. There's no external sensor for the remote.

and that hard drive will in fact fit TSD. Just put that in the bracket from one of the other drives in your computer. If you don't have an extra one, then just yank the one from your current unit before you send it back.

If you want a nice external eSATA enclosure use this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182134

I personally use that and it is da bomb and for a cheap price.
