infamous - thanks for the link to the enclosure. i didnt think there was an esata one for that cheap. makes me wonder why all the esata external drives are SOOO much money compared to the USB/firewire ones............

i bought a 750 gig WD my book essential(usb/firewire only) last week for $119. it came to $130 after taxes. i think it was an excellent price so that's my new external drive. 400 gigs already full :-X

Arch - there are a few NYers on here and, in true NYer fashion, they dont talk to any of the other NYers.

    hahahaha :D :D :D

Has anyone played Crysis on their dv7t at all?

I have been playing CoD 4 and it runs great. Just wondering if this bad boy could run Crysis decently and at what settings.

It has disappeared twice since release. It's probably just a shortage.

Thanks, that what I needed to know. I didn't realize options like that come and go. I didn't mean to ask twice about it - I just wanted to make sure in case I wanted to somehow change up my order before it got too far along!

I guess that's not a user installable component after the fact since it's internal. Again, we have TV's out the wazoo and I'm not sure I'd ever use it, *but* it's always nice to not choose it vs. not having the option!

I have. It run Crysis fairly well on medium on most levels, just make sure to turn off shadows. Everything on low produces very smooth gameplay, except on the last level where it is average (impossible to play on any other setting). Make sure to life the back end of the laptop a bit when playing Crysis, it made my laptop pretty toasty after about 2hrs.

Wow is Crysis REALLY that intense?

I mean if this laptop can't handle it at it's max settings then what laptop will without exploding?

Just curious here...I'm not at all a huge PC gamer but if I ever did decide to play a popular PC game then I would like to know what its limitations are.

I'm specifically looking forward to Spore.

There are some really hardcore notebooks with SLI implemented in their graphic sub-systems. These are like $4K rigs though, so the fact that a really nice $1500-1800 machine runs it pretty decent is not bad!

Crysis is just that kind of a beast. It'll be another 2 or 3 years when the average computer can run it at high. The dv7t with a 9600m GT graphics card can run most modern games on medium to high (except for crysis of course). But as for spore, I'm pretty sure you can run it on max without too much framerate drops, I play C&C 3 on max everything and it runs very smoothly even when there's about a million units on screen shooting.

Crysis is probably one of the most demanding games, if not the most on its own. SLI is pretty much required to run it on MAX with no lag and high FPS. Some people might respond saying "OH, a 9800 GTX can handle it." It sure can, just not optimally.

Just a follow-up to a post I made a few days ago in this thread (the too good to be true replacement laptop). I did receive the new, upgraded laptop yesterday! There was note with a phone # to call. So, I called the # & found out that the HP Engineering Dept in Houston sent me the replacement directly. This bypasses the "Home & Home Office Return Store" process who told me that Tech Suport could not authorize a laptop relacement.

After talking with Engineering Dept, I found out that on a rare occasion, if a laptop has a problem right out of the box (like mine did with the display), they will ask that the laptop be sent directly to them so they can look at it & determine if there is a problem in manufacturing / design. They will send those "lucky" few people an equivelant laptop or better from what they have in stock.

On another note....the Off-shore Tech Support team did not put this special delivery in the Service Ticket notes. So, when I called to confirm replacement I was told on over the weekend, they had no record of it. On Monday, the Home & Home Office Return had created an RMA & I ordered a new laptop (so I could get the 30% off deal).

Luckily, I had a chance to talk with they guy in Houston 1st so I cancelled the Home & Home Office RMA & my new order last night.

In the end...I lost 5 hrs of my life talking w/HP due to poor communication ont heir end, but I got a great laptop. I am just crossing my fingers & hoping my new laptop got cancelled.

Same here - i have not played video games in years but even when i did, i never had a dedicated video card with ram - i always used the integrated crap and played and the lowest settings possible :)

so it's cool to have a machine that you can practically throw anything at and watch it wow you with effects. i bought and played unreal 3 on my dv7t for this reason. im also getting crysis 2 when it comes out in late september i believe.

i started a thread in the gaming section of this site asking for games which have the nicest graphics. i got sooo many replies:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=286168

based on what people said, i bought unreal 3. im waiting on crysis 2, grid racing, and something called orange box which is a compilation of 5 games.

Yes, the Orange Box is a very good deal. It includes Half Life 2, HL2 Episode 1, HL2 Episode 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. Portal is a must play. If you want a taste of Portal before you buy, search "portal flash" on google, it gives you an idea on what Portal is about.

Notebook is officially in production..... :)

Not much longer now. I'm so tired of sharing a computer with others...lol.

Thanks for all the replies in regards to my gaming question. I'm mostly a 360/Wii gamer so I'm content with those for now. However it's nice to know that my laptop can handle most games.

Mine is at: Order dropped to factory (Estimated to ship on September 4, 2008)

Is the next status update actual production?

Yeah, same here - I generally enjoy consoles more because they let me get away from a computer (which is what I do professionally). However, that being said, I'm kind of interested to maybe check out a few things, especially connected to the big TV downstairs via HDMI.

I've had mine for a while now but just ran into a little problem.

I was going through msconfig today unchecking things in the startup list that I don't use, restarted, and now the scroll bar on the mouse pad doesn't work, it just asks as an extension of the mouse surface. I'm guessing I ended the process that controled, but i'm not sure which one it is...

Anyone have any idea what controls that area?

I have a question for everyone who has their dv7t currently: How much ram does your unit use while idle, say after you turn it on and no programs running. When I do ctrl+alt+delete and got to task manager, then performance, it says that I use anywhere from 1.40-1.70 gigs of ram.

Are other people's numbers about the same?

    Thanks

    1. In the startup, make sure synaptics anything is left checked. syn touchpad or anything relating to that. - that is your scoll bar and touchpad features...

    2. No raid -0 the CHIPSET PHYSICALLY supports it, HP blocked it with thier factory-installed hp bios, hopefully someone makes their own bios off the generic phoenix bios...

    3. I replaced both sticks with ocz 6400 (800mhz) 4gb now. It uses about 1.5-2 gig's average, so nothing out of the norm. This chipset works with and suppots 8gb pc2-6400 (when it comes out) Cant wait till affordable pc2-6400 4gb sodimm's are for sale! currently you can spend 1 grand for some pc2-5400 (sloooow) sticks in 4gb sizes maxing it @ 8gb, but only 5400 again...

The FedEx tracking is quite confusing.

Aug 27, 2008 2:16 PM Int'l shipment release ANCHORAGE, AK
Aug 27, 2008 2:57 PM In transit SHANGHAI CN
Aug 26, 2008 7:55 PM Left FedEx origin facility KUNSHAN CN
Aug 26, 2008 9:13 AM Picked up KUNSHAN CN Package received after FedEx cutoff

So it was in transit from China after it was in AK? Lol.

Anyway it says it will be delivered by 10:30 AM on Friday. Hopefully that is true.

I looked at that in a Best Buy before I decided on the dv7t. It actually costs $1450.

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...811fx&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1211587727985

It is only availible at Best Buy (supposedly).

While it does have nice specs, it felt kind of flimsy to me when I looked at it. There is a small gap around the edge of the notebook between the top part of the case and the bottom part of the laptop. It feels like you could almost pry the case apart.

What really made me decide against it is the battery. It sticks out about 3/4 of an inch in the back, but only in the middle of the laptop. That gives it a very strange shape. Not to mention the design is very ugly and it weighs like a pound and a half more than the dv7t.

If you aren't ever going to take it anywhere it might be worth looking into.

    Hi jrm5100

Actually, this makes sense. All dates and times are local to their particular time zones. When transiting from China to Alaska, it crosses the international date line, so goes back a day. Depending on the amount of travel time to make this journey, it can easily arrive at a time (at the destination's time zone) that is "earlier" than its departure time (at the time zone of its point of departure).

I just received my new DV7t & it is great!!! I have experienced a couple small problems & thought I would come here for some help.

I think I fixed the first problem in which I would receive an "HID Data" error screen when I used my bluetooth mouse. The fix can be found here for anyone that has a similar problem.... http://help.wugnet.com/vista/HID-data-stopped-working-bluetooth-mouse-errorftopic-136000-days0-orderasc-8.html

I have not figured out my second problem. For some reason, Vista does not see my SD Card that I inserted into the SD Card reader. The card works since I have used it on my old Desktop & my work laptop. So far, I have not been able to find anything on the web. Has anyone else experience this problem??

    Any help is greatly appreaciated!

I have finally seen those 5 sweet, sweet words:
I also noticed the weight switched from kg to pounds, although their math must be off or something. It said 4.8 kg and now it says 9.6 pounds. Either it lost a pound between Alaska and Pennsylvania or the original weight was just an estimate by HP.

No, but I think it did something similar. It went from Alaska to Indianapolis. 3 minutes after it left Indianapolis it said it was in Pittsburgh, and a little bit over two hours later it was in my city in PA. It never said it left Pittsburgh- it just says it arrived in my city. I am guessing it was never actually in Pittsburgh.

    512 mb ram
    32mb ati radeon 9000
    40 gb hard drive
    14'' screen
    windows xp

As you can see my Dv7t is going to be quite an upgrade from the dell!

My estimated shipping date is sept. 3rd....

I ordered it before the 30% off coupon showed up--- I guess I'll call them when it gets here--- maybe HP will give me some credit?

hopefully this hurricane Gustav doesnt interfere with the delivery as i am in SW FL...

I'm looking forward to being able to play modern games as I am pretty limited on this dell...I play Wolf ET mainly and am hoping I can still run it on Vista as its an older game (02). I'm gonna try and get into battlefield 1942, 2 and CoD 2,4..

I only wish HP let the 8800m or 9800m gt ddr3 be an option on the Dv7t, I would have gladly shelled out a couple hundred more for one of those...but for someone like myself who has been playing ET on low settings with an integrated 32mb radeon card I'm sure the 9600m gt will please me...

thanks for the informative and interesting thread!

The past 3 out of 4 times I've started my computer, a popup has appeared saying " Microsoft Sync Center has stopped working ". I have to close the program to continue.
What is this and how do I fix it?

    Thanks

I called HP and they offered me $100 credit or they said I could order a second laptop, apply the coupon, and return the first one.... the coupon would save me $487...

This seems like a pain to me.. I still don't know what to do....also I would barely have enough money on my check card to order a second laptop--- i might just go with the $100 credit....

If only i had waited like 2 more days before i ordered....
