One is in the bathroom and the other is on my desk. I actually labeled my bathroom door with a sign that reads "Conference Room." A lot of important actions go down in the bathroom. Surprisingly enough the toilet is the only thing that can take my sh1t. so, yeah...

I have decided on what to do about the battery. I charged it to 100% and took it out. Since I always have my computer at my desk usually, I will just use the power chord to run the machine and put the battery in whenever neede, i.e. class.

Anyone think this is a bad idea?

Not a bad idea if you don't mind being vulnerable to power outages :)

I don't understand all this concern about batteries... really, leaving it in doesn't do anything because your computer sees that it's at 100% and doesn't charge it. Period. I've left my battery in my dv8000 for 2.5 years and it still runs for hours when I'm flying, and saves my behind during random power outages.

Yeah I'm totally with you on that. The way I see it if the battery lasts me 2 years then that's fine. However I don't want to deal with the hassle of taking it out and putting it back in every few hours or w/e.

I just wish HP had offered an Extended Life Battery (like a 9 cell or 10 cell if those are made) with the laptop.

Whenever I put a disc into the disc drive, turn on my bluetooth moush, plug my iPod in, etc. I alway get a message that says, "HID DATA has stopped working". Then windows searches for a solution for the problem and doesn't find one. And the I close the box.

It doesn't ever give me any real problems, but it's really dammn annoying.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem. I have 64 bit vista, don't know if that makes a difference as to what the solution would be compared to 32 bit.

    Thanks

    Well 2 things,

1 I took my DV7T into the shop today, (Their an Authorized HP repair center) and had artic silver put on to replace the HP crappy TIM, Current temps are as follows after playing a lil Flat Out Maximum carnage

    Thrm 34 C

    CPU #0 26 C
    CPU#1 25 C

    GPU#52 C

    Hitachi HD 33 C

    Toshiba HD 34 C

All in all I would say a nice drop in temps.

    2. Anyone have any advice or helpful info on keeping the fingerprints and smudges off of this thing? And best way to clean the screen? And yes I did get the microfiber cleaning cloth for the outter case.

    HP DV7T
    Core2Duo P7350 2.0 Ghz
    3 gigs of DDR2
    Nvidia 9200M GS
    Standard brightview screen
    1 Hitachi 250 Gig HD 5400 RPM
    1 Toshiba 250 Gig HD 5400 RPM

Well I just got the email this morning that my laptop has been shipped out. However I clicked on the link and it said no info available.

They also mentioned Labor Day and how anything that says it should arrive by that day will actually arrive on the 2nd.

I'm hoping it comes by the 2nd but if it's the 3rd that's cool too. I'm so pumped for this laptop to arrive.

I've had mine for about two weeks now, here are a couple of comments.

All in all, I really like this laptop and would definitely buy it again. I still think that there aren't any better alternatives on the market. I do want to offer some constructive criticism in case anyone from HP happens to be listening.

    1. The updated cosmetics are very impractical and are quite a step backwards from my HP ZD7000. Everything about the DV7t case is worse than the ZD7000. If it were possible, I would move the DV7t guts into the older ZD7000 case. The black on silver keyboard is very hard to read. The glossy surfaces look terrible unless you plan on wearing gloves every time you use the PC. Everything on this computer has a mirror finish. The capacitive touch switches are much harder to use than physical switches. The fact that they kept the essential power button as a physical switch tells me that they know that the capacitive touch switches have some issues. Function is sacrificed for form. The marketing guys definitely won the argument with the engineers this time.

    2. I still would have opted for a matte screen if possible. Surely I can't be alone on this?

    3. My touchpad is a little loose, so that it pushes in slightly and makes a slight clicking noise when I use it. Anyone else have this problem?

    4. The bottom 1/4" of my screen (1680x1050, non-infinity view) leaks a lot light when it is black. It's not a huge deal since the tool bar covers most of that.

    5. The sound on my ZD7000 was significantly better, but that was an exceptional sounding laptop. I'd rate the sound on the DV7t as a B- compared to other laptops. There is some mechanical rattle and distortion at low levels and the subwoofer basically does nothing. There was more low end on the ZD7000 without a "subwoofer". Of course the DV7t still blows away my new Dell Inspiron I use at work, which sounds like an audio enabled birthday card.

If this laptop had the chassis of the ZD7000, it might very well have been the perfect laptop. It's a shame that HP took a few steps back along with the many leaps forward between these two models. Again, I would buy it all over again if I had to. I still recommend it to everyone out there.

And finally, regarding the NB8821 coupon: It did work retroactively for me with no haggling. I was given a full $280 refund today for the difference between the $150 coupon I originally used and the newer 30% coupon. I spent a total of 15 minutes on the phone to make this happen.

ETK, I hear ya on some external design decisions being a step back from the ZD7k. I still have mine as a matter of fact, and I've recently been trying to get it fixed under that class-action lawsuit :O

From what I understand, that means you got a crappy screen and lots of leakage isn't the norm. Anyone else care to weigh in on this? I'm a little worried since mine is still in the mail

    JPZ,

Thanks for that quote from K-Tron; really made a lot of sense and was exactly what I was having questoins about. Thanks man.

I have been reading some things about some people have issues with their touch displays for volume and everthing. Maybe I just got lucky but I have had no issues with mine. A light tough on the key does what it's supposed to do. Again, I probably just got lucky.

Has anyone else had problems with the "HID DATA has stopped working" message whenever they put a disc in, connect a bluetooth device, etc.?

Anyone know how to fix it?

Gemiar, after a quick search I found this over in the Vista thread:

As Chappy and others mention, it's a problem related to Quick Launch and Bluetooth. Hope that helps.

    Towards ETK,

I prefer the new design. It may be impractical, but it's all about preference.

As for the speakers, assuming the ZD7k had Harmon Kardon then they probably would've been better.

I had a ZV5k laptop and the Harmon Kardon speakers built into it were simply amazing. It was as if I had an entire stereo system in front of me.

    Hi CM,
I used the microfiber on the inside of a friends dv5t (touch pad, palm rests, etc.) and it worked well.
Where did you use the Arctic Silver - CPU heat sink, graphics, ? Are the heat sinks difficult to remove? Why is a service center necessary?

It won't update on average until around 12am EST time tonight and even then it will usually only say that it was received after the cutoff.

Like you two I received that same email, my estimate is that we will receive our laptops on Thursday September 4th!!!

    PM Sent ED....

Yes I took it into a Authorized service center to keep the warranty in tact, Allthough I was allowed to watch so I could dismantle my DV7t quite easily now, while it did appear to be a bit of a pain to be done, I could do it myself now, I just dislike the fact that it's 1 whole assembly for the heatsink, CPU, GPU, And Capacitors, all on 1 Pipeline, and the fact of only 1 fan to keep them all cool, Vs. My old alienware that had 1 fan for the cpu, and another for the GPU, but yes I ran it quite hard for a bit last night, and then shut it down, for the night, and upon usage today I see a 10 C temp drop in CPU Temps under usage, and around a 5-7 C Drop in GPU temp, so all in all as I said before, Time, and $ well spent.

Just wanted to say, thanks everyone! Reading through this forum really helped in making my decision to purchase the dv7t. I’m a web/graphic designer who has been who is looking forward to having a mobile office.

I ordered on August 28th and have a build date of September 9th.

    - HP Pavilion dv7t Entertainment Notebook
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz)
    - 17.0" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Display (1680 x 1050)
    - 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    - 320GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (160GB x 2) with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    - [For BrightView Infinity] Webcam Only
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    - Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
    - No Modem
    - LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    - System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
    - HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

    Question:

I plan on installing a clean version of Vista shortly after making sure everything is working properly. Will the system recovery DVD do a clean windows install, or should try to track down a Windows Home Premium 64bit CD?

    Thanks Again,

    Nick

with my 1st dv7t, it was a toshiba. however, someone else said that they had a fujitsu in theirs so i think the answer is it depends.

im already thinking about getting a 500gb drive, or 2 of them, just for the hell of it ;-D i would get the WD scorpio or the new fujitsu.

Hahaha, get the heck out of here - I just got a shipping confirmation and my times/locations are exactly the same :D

Oh wow, ditto *again* - I'm also on 2nd day shipping too so it will be interesting if it shows Wednesday. Technically in the US it's labor day, but I don't think that effects any FedEx logistics outside the US.

i know one thing for sure,
    pc2 6400 didnt do a thing for my dell 1720 t9500 vista x32,

So I'm a little worried. Whenever I run CoD 4 or Crysis for a while my cpu gets pretty toasty, even with the Zalman NC2000 cooler. Anyone know of anything further I can do to reduce the heat on this thing... can't be good.

    Thanks

^ i noticed that too when i played unreal 3 for an hour or so. it scared the hell out of me. if you keep abusing it like that, how long before it dies?

the last thing i want is to burn the gpu or something else because i was gaming on my laptop which, apparently, was made for gaming..... i dont want a $1500 paperweight... at least not so early on in it's life......

i considered just sticking to my desktop for games. which sort of sucks - what's the point of having 512mb graphics card on your laptop? for excel?

    :: rolling eyes ::

and everyone quotes and has 'reasonable' temprature figures for proc, HD, gpu while gaming but what are the *official* temp ranges from the manufacturer? at least seeing those numbers, i could have something to compare my results with.... that way i know the tempratures i see are expected or too high.....

You people are worring too much about the heat. Elevate the back, or better yet, get a cooler.
Remove the Remote so the HDD stays a little cooler.
Keep in a well ventilated area.

The computer would shut off if it got to a dangerously hot temp so don't worry.

Here's my explanation of the high temperatures.

Imagine a mansion with a bunch of little midgets running around performing various tasks. Once in a while they bump into one another (lag) and sometimes they are dehydrated (toasty). Since there isn't enough fan (hydration) to go around, the midgets overheat, but still perform their tasks. They won't ever give up. HP pays them to last one full year, unless you buy the extended midet warranty with early death protection.

I agree with jpzsports, I don't have my notebook yet but I've always overclocked my desktops. If the motherboard or cpu get to hot it will shut down.

    Just enjoy your purchase!
