Hi,
I have had a DV7-1020ea from PC World since the middle of August and I am extremely happy with it. The specs rip through Mass Effect like I've never seen-so for gaming, it is really cool. PC World if you ask will do a deal, so you can get the price down or as in my case I got some extras included free. On a side note, Currys do a lot of price cuts on the DV7-1050ea almost weekly. I saw it yesterday for under £1000.
For Rick1486, I use my computer every day and the silvery plastic coating is superb-no slippiness and definately no wear-yet. The screen I have found is very good but not as good as an AU unit which I had on a DV9000. That said coupled with the 9600GT the screen is crisp and a joy to view DVDs almost at any angle.
The only problem I have is with Vista 64bit, some programmes don't work especially IE7 which crashes a lot!!
I have had HPs for nearly 4 years and this is definately the best.

Thanks Gemiar for that.
Unfortunately in the UK we don't have the customise option via HP otherwise I think I'd have already plumped for the dv7.
I've been looking around the net and it seems we might be getting the HDX very soon, so I think I'll keep my options open until then, but in the meantime if anyone has any experience with one please let me know how good/bad it is.
Cheers

They're all like that. I sent two back, one Infinity one not, specifically because they had the worst LCD screen I've ever seen on a laptop.
-
I don't think this is the best monitor ever, but I don't know what that guy is talking about. I have the WXSGA+ and it looks ok. Not great wow awesome, but ok. Viewing angles are fine. I was actually somewhat suprised by them. Black is black, depending on your lighting situations/if you actually take the time to play with nvidia settings. Not the brightest or best looking monitor, but not the worst I've seen either.
That being said:
It's an LCD. They all look like crap. Even your precious "RGB" and whatever other crap. It looks terrible and you know it. nyah nyah nyah -
In regards to the color display:
I noticed somewhat "greyish" colors when I first got my dv7t as well. I read an earlier post and got help to fix it.
Right click on the desktop, go to nVidia control panel, on the left under display select the middle option "Adjust desktop color settings", then change the digital vibrance setting. I have mine at 50% and it looks great. -
I also have the 1440x900 panel... everything looked washed out... had to tune the gamma, brightness and contrast settings in the nVidia Control Panel to get it to look acceptable... found out the default settings had the contrast too high which caused the wash out...
I had a calibrated CRT to compare the colours and tried to get it as close as possible without using a colorimeter...
P.S. Ugh... I had a link to a website to assist in the adjusting gamma, contrast and brightness but I can't add URLs yet
-
The colors are fixable but the ability of the screen to represent the colors is ridiculously bad.
I have a two-year old HP laptop with the Ultra BrightView (two CCFL backlights) screen, and it is much better.
They don't all look as bad as the dv7's screen... as a matter of fact, most look better. -
This one is handy for basic calibration.
-
Just change the underscores with a periods...
www_lagom_nl/lcd-test/
decent site for basic calibration... -
Does the 8cell battery suck while on high performance?
Anyway i was playing WOW today layin on my bed. Max settings as usuall only getting like 15fps... I checked battery lvl up at 80% and set on high performance.
I run over to my desk plug it in and instantly up to 35fps. unplug it drop down to 15fps... what gives? Shouldnt the battery be able to handle its own stock system? -
Check in the NVidia Control Panel for the "PowerMizer" settings.
-
Will the SD card reader also read SDHC cards?

Just some random info, newest laptop2go drivers kill blueray playback (at least for the 9600m GT). It errors saying something about not having a vga connected.
Driver: v180.43 Vista 64 -
It probably isn't a signed driver. You had to use the modified .inf file, correct?
-
OneSickOmen17t Notebook Consultant
No modded drivers will allow blu-ray playback. i've tried almost everyone from laptopvideo2go. It kinda sucks.
-
I did it before I sent mine back. I used QuickPlay and it worked fine.
-
OneSickOmen17t Notebook Consultant
Which one? I tried all of these:
177.92, 177.98, 178.13, 178.24, 180.42. Not one supported blu-ray playback. Please let me know which one you used that worked?!?!?!? -
Are you using QuickPlay to play the Blu-rays? I downloaded whatever was available mid-September, sorry I don't have a version for you
-
OneSickOmen17t Notebook Consultant
Yup. Quick play would not play them. I'm currently shopping for a better blu-ray playing soft-ware. As close to VLC as possible!
-
I'm using 176.22 Vista 64 version and blueray playback is working fine. It's actually a modded HP driver, but I see no improvements over the driver that came with it.
-
No luck finding it there. Im running the newest drivers off laptopvideo2go
-
OneSickOmen17t Notebook Consultant
I agree! None of the drivers showed a significant up to my 3DMark06 Scores. -
I wasn't talking 3dmark. I tested actual game fps. I actually think I might have lost 2 or 3 fps in COD4
-
the driver changes are usually minimal. The hardware is what determines 99% of the performance... so the driver won't make a huge difference unless there are drastic changes.
-
hey is there any way i can integrate the HP media remote with winamp or other software like VLC??

Just wondering if anyone has gotten the digital audio out ( S/pdif) working on their dv7t's via the quickdock...
I watched iron man via my dv7t - outputted to a 42" plasma. i had the audio coming out of my logitech z5500 setup... the experience was amazing even though i am just connected via stereo cable as of now... -
Anyone have any idea when there will be another coupon? If I order now would I be able to get them to add on a coupon if one should come out before it is built?
Thanks -
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
yeah, you can have a coupon applied up to 3 weeks after you recieve the machine i believe. or at least, hp lets you keep the laptop for 3 weeks before you return it for a full refund. after you get the machine and a coupon comes out, call them and tell them to apply it. if they don't, send the machine back. simple as that.
if you dig around here on the forums, you'll see a lot of people have done this, and after they've gotten their machines, they've had a few hundred dollars knocked off the price. -
Yep, I have used two different brands of 8GB SDHC cards without any problems.
-
Thanks Cache22!

Hi, I have a new DV7-1150US, and I can't stand the touchpad.
Unlike any of my ThinkPad's and DELL's that have glossy/textured touchpads, this shiny and smooth touchpad is so sticky that any bit of moisture on my fingers makes it impossible to use, and I'm unlucky in that my hands are always moist.
In searching for "dv7 sticky touchpad" there seeems to be lots of similar complaints, and how I ended up here.
I would love to have a less sticky plastic sticker to place over the touchpad.
Can anybody offer any links to such products?
Thanks

Watching the Planet Earth documentary I have on blu-ray, with surround out to my z5500's via my new quickdock, right now
My only grumble is that being in the UK, I couldn't get a higher resolution screen
-
I watched doomsday on the laptop screen. I was pretty suprised, it looked decent.
-
I just got a dv7t and am pretty upset. I ordered the 1680 X 1050 display. At the max resolution it looks great. The problem is that the icons in the various program are too small. When I went to swap to the 1440 X 900 resolution I was shocked that it wasn't available. I think 1440 X 900 is a better operating resolution.
The next highest resolution I can pick is 1360 X 768 and I have to say it looks like trash. I paid for a high resolution display and it bothers me that my father, who got the same laptop with the 1440 X 900 display, can have a clearer resolution that me.
Is there any way I can update anything to get it to go to 1440 X 900? Some please help soon so I can figure out if I have to return this or not.
Also I forgot to mention. My sister who got a HP laptop 2 years ago got a display that offers the 1680 X 1050 and can display the 1440 X 900. -
An LCD panel has a fixed resolution, so when you drop the resolution you're working at, it will try to fill the screen, but will have to stretch out the image, essentially, you're seeing a 1360 X 768 blown up to 1680 X 1050, 1440 X 900 will probably be the same.
If you really want to use that resolution, you could try the Nvidia driver over-rides, if they're still there.
One question I have about the dv7t panel, is it 6-bit or 8-bit? -
Did you try to make the fonts and icons larger? (right-click desktop, Personalize, on the left-side task menu click "Adjust Font Size (DPI), select "Large Scale (120 DPI)") It will make text more legible on a high-res screen like yours. You can adjust icon sizes by holding CTRL and using your mouse's scroll wheel to enlarge or shrink icons...
As Pyrii said, LCDs are fixed-pixel displays... any resolution less than it's native res will be "upscaled" to the panel size... which will make everything look soft... -
Yes I increased the DPI which makes windows work fine, but this doesn't increase the icon size while using individual programs which makes them an eye sore.
-
You must want icons huge. I have used 1600 x 1200 on my crt for a long time. I think the icons look enormous on lower resolutions.
-
Give this a shot...
right-click desktop,
Personalize,
Adjust Font Size (DPI),
select "Custom DPI..." button,
Scale to this percentage of normal size: choose 125%
un-check "Use Windows XP style DPI scaling"
... that should make non-DPI aware applications scale up with the rest of Windows...
Hope that helps
-
Just because I'm still curious
-
I just did this and for some programs it did increase the icon size, but it made everything blurry. I'm sadly going to have to send this back. I'd rather not strain my eyes to see things for the next few years.
As for the 6 or 8 bit thing, how do I check? I'd love to tell you I just don't know how. -
Without having to read through 70 pages, what should I know or be made aware of, having just purchased an DV7T? I will be using it as a glorified VCR so nothing too taxing for it...
-
For some reason, the Intel wireless in my dv7t doesn't get on well with my Netgear router. What routers are other dv7t users using?
-
Is this a good deal?
HP Pavilion dv7-1130us
it was 4gig ram
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics RS780M card
and well you can look at it here:
http://www.officemax.com/omax/catalo...ategory_Id=325
Is this a good deal for 699? Its $150off or should I just get Gateway M-7317u
and its got 3gig of ram instead of 4 and a weaker video card. for 499(also on sale)
Im just wondering if the extra $200 is worth it for the HP?
and what games will work on the HP out of the modern games if any and if games like Portal and Doom 3 will work. THANKS for any help -
Rocket,
I'm using a lynksis router and it works fine. -
Ubuntu 8.10 is now on my DV7T. Working great so far.
-
Not sure why this happened but the vertical scroll bar on the right side of the touchpad stopped working. If I slide my finger up/down it the cursor will move, but not the screen.
Any thoughts or ideas how I can fix this? -
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
yeah - i had a similar problem. go to the synaptics control panel (either via the icon by the clock on the start menu or via control panel) and dig through that applet.
did you add an external/usb/btooth mouse recently? because when i added mine, the software i installed for it 'undid' some of the synaptics settings so i had to go into the applet and fix it.
