Feb 9, 2010 5:18 PM Picked up SHANGHAI CN

Update: Ok, so I just called FedEx and even though mine was one minute behind yours Tony, it's still in Shanghai but he couldn't give me any extra information about why it's still there...

You guys are waiting for customers to clear the shipments. Once that happens it is like most any other Fedex in the US.

Feb 10, 2010 2:33 AM Arrived at FedEx location ANCHORAGE, AK
Feb 10, 2010 4:30 AM In transitSHANGHAI CN
Feb 10, 2010 3:36 AM In transitSHANGHAI CN
Feb 9, 2010 5:17 PM Picked upSHANGHAI CN

They arrived at the same time in AK but we have different settings on the time shown. I selected local scan, not destination scan. Let's go Fedex!

I would like to get everybodys input in here. I'm debating wether to purchase either th dv7t-3180us or the dv8 quad. I currently have a dv7-1270us that's just a year old but so far had to have the battery replaced and the motherboard was just replaced a week ago, and now I have to send it back out to hp to get it replaced again. I don't want this laptop anymore but I'm still a fan of hp's. Are there any major hardware problems with the new dv7's or 8's? I don't want to have to replace my laptop every year like I have been. 1 toshiba, 1 gateway, and now with my current dv7 I just don't want to risk it being ok for a while then it going again. It already has twice. But I don't want to take a performance hit that's why I'm looking into the new dv7's. So what do you guys recomend?

I've had this laptop since early November and it was kind of a impulse purchase and I didn't look at the specification too well, but I had thought the cover plate on the lefthand side towards the front was a PCMCIA slot.... it's the right physical size, but my attempt to plug in a serial/parallel port PCMCIA card proved less than successful and looking to the slot it has connection points that are vastly different... oh well, I guess PCMCIA is now considered obsolete?

Just realized that the $50 coupon, although worthless for most items because it won't work with other sales/discounts, takes a nice chunk out of the 2 year accidental damage service plan...brings it down to $129.

Well, you should start with whether you want something bigger than 17".... the dv8t is 18+, and does HD video.

You probably need to start with what you need the system for.

I have the dv7t and I am very happy with it. Some people have buyer's remorse because the dv8t screen is better.

Speaking of HD video, I have been unable to capture HDV in Windows 7.
Is there any reason this computer or OS cannot perform that task?
My wife's itty-bitty C2Duo XP laptop can do it. I have read on the 'net it is a common issue.

By firewire? If that so i have read that it is due to crap Ricoh or Jmicron firewire chip. That one things i would like to know about my DV7 that has Jmicron one. But i don't have a fireware HDV cam.

Has anyone tried calibrating the screen with something like spyder ?

Is the hardware the difference between the dv7 and dv8 screens or could it be the dv8 has better out of box calibration ?

    Cheers

How do I determine the manufacturer of the firewire chip? Can this be fixed?
This seems to be the only issue of this Monsta machine.

Mine still shows in Shanghai if it makes you feel a little better.. At least yours is showing in the states.. At this point I'm sure it has to be on a plane (or more optimistically being off loaded from a plane and on its way to a hub near me) but FedEx doesn't really give you much detail to go on.. I prefer UPS tracking because it shows you more detail IMHO, but I digress.

For some reason in mine the 1394 only appears in device maanager if i connect something to firewire port or sdcard port. Then select it and go to properties, there find the hardware id, take note of the numbers of:

    ven(dor)

    dev(ice)

    fill it here:

Mine missed it's scheduled flight because of a delay in China... it will likely be an extra 1 - 2 days for it get to me... GRR

FedEx rep did tell me that shipments usually arrive the next business day after they clear customs in America in case anyone was wondering...

You guys know, when we finally get our laptops this forum is going to be flooded with questions and comments from all of us.

I hope the guys that already have theirs will chime in and help us all out. As I'm sure they will.

I have read thru all of the posts here and I'm fairly certain any questions we will have - have already been answered in a previous post

I know some folks are a wee bit obsessed with fingerprints on the black, and wish the screen were sharper, but I just love the machine. It's Windows 7 that seems to be the culprit with my printer server-thingy and the HDV capture.

I can't comment on longevity as I've barely had mine a week as of now, but I would say it truly depends on what you use it for. I don't travel daily with mine, I think of it more as a compact desktop so it is a desk-baby. For this reason alone I wish I went with the dv8, but my last hp 17" lasted 5 years with very few problems and I never said "damn, if I just had that extra inch..." so I think I'll be happy for the next few years this time too.

I hate to brag, but when they shipped it from China, it took exactly 3 days to reach my doorstep on Long Island. That was in late December. Not sure why its slowed down now.

Will they let you pick it up at the hub if you drive up there? The one down here in Atlanta will let you if you bring proof of ID. Seems like it would be a better solution then having to wait 4 more days.

On a personal note: Mine finally made it to the states.. all be it Alaska, but at least its in the states! I should have it Monday!

That isn't entirely true. Mine arrived in the local station on the Feb 5 for a scheduled delivery of Tuesday the 9th. I got it on Monday the 8th. It probably won't speed up the process any, but you might try calling 1-800-463-3339 and try and schedule a local pickup because you "may" be able to pick it up, otherwise just wait patiently and enjoy.

Here's some advice: dial your display brightness down to about 70% max... after 4 days with this machine my eyes are fried.

Is there anyone here who has a dv7t Quad that is a World of Warcraft player? I'm debating between this and the Dell Studio XPS 16. I'd be interested to know what kind of frame rates you get while playing WoW, as well as knowing if the game supports the 1600x900 resolution. I couldn't find any information on whether WoW can support that resolution.

Personally I'm just using what it came with, considering I can't find the 320M on the nvidia site anywhere to get drivers for it... Maybe someone will have a better option.

Also, I have my laptop plugged in 24/7 which on the last laptop killed a battery before I just took it out. I have the battery out of this one, however, due to where it is that leaves a big gap along the back of the laptop. Is there anyplace that would carry a placeholder to put in there so I have a flat surface to rest it on an elevated surface?

You guys are lucky with the delivery. Mine is showing at the Denver sort facility (I live in Denver) but just called FedEx to try to have it held somewhere so I could go pick it up and they are claiming it's been set aside until processing for Tuesday! So it's just going to sit there for 3 more days.

What does that mean? Suggests there are things you aren't happy with. Details?

OK, but better how? What aspect of it do you think could/should be better?

I'm totally pleased! This is my 4th laptop (2 Dells and 1 HP) and I love the color, the performance, the screen, the keyboard, etc. Come on Groz, what were you expecting? I have $815 in this laptop, loaded by the way, still have a $50 coupon, and I'm very happy with this PC.
