Amm3 doesn't matter, but i am in Europe and temps here are in Cº centigrades. If it goes from 40-80 to 85ºC at max push it is okay, if your room temps are around 25ºC.

4nortons i calibrated and i can get good blacks, viewing angle is poor like you said, i don't know about alternatives.

Anyone notice how the speakers sort of suck at low levels but seem to become clearer and crisper at higher volumes?

Maybe ambient noise masks lower level sounds?

If I live to be 1,000 I'll never understand why the complaints about viewing angles on a laptop... I mean, after all, the keyboard and mouse pad are right in front of the screen... are you sitting off to the side trying to operate it? I just don't see a problem with limited viewing angles with a laptop - I remember about 15 years ago one of the selling point of the TFT (I think that was the acronym) screened laptops was its limited viewing angle, so others sitting next to you couldn't see what you had on the screen!

I am never in same position on my seat -better for health to change often- and that forces me the change the screen everytime. Also it is difficult to show work to a partner.

    Hey guys,
I will be joining your ranks pretty soon. I ordered my notebook on Sept 26th and have an estimated ship date of October 8th. I feel like a little kid waiting for x-mas.

I have read some of the forums that some people got their laptops on the day it was estimated to ship, and that it takes at most 4 days for your order to ship. I wish I was one of the lucky ones but I'm not because it's almost the 7th and my order still in production.

Here is the specs that I ordered:

HP Pavilion dv7t Select Edition PC
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Quad Core processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8 GHz
    • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 [HDMI, VGA] - For Quad Core Processors
    • FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • FREE Upgrade to 640GB 7200RPM Dual Hard Drive (320GB x 2) with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • Microsoft(R) Office Starter 2010
    • No additional security software
    • 50% OFF! One 6 Cell (standard) and One 9 Cell (over-sized) Lithium Ion Battery
    • 17.3" diagonal HD+ High-Definition HP LED BrightView Widescreen Display (1600 x 900)
    • SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    • HP TrueVision Webcam and Fingerprint Reader
    • Intel Wireless-N Card
    • Standard Keyboard
    • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

Do you guys know any good messenger bags for a 17.3 inch notebook? All the ones I've seen seem a little flimsy and I don't want to spend more than $80.

    Thank you!

Congrats on your new laptop! I hope you'll love it as much as I do mine. As for messenger bags, I bought this one from Amazon for mine and it fits perfectly. I don't lug mine around too much, but when I do, it serves my purpose well. I don't have too much experience with bags so I can't really tell you how durable it is. It's plenty sturdy for me though and has enough room for my mouse, mousepad, the huge power brick, network cable, a handful of papers, maybe a really thin book or notebook and a bunch of small accessories.

have had my dv7t for about 25 months now... this thing is still as fast as it was on day 1 and im still in love with it. i added an intel 80gb ssd drive (g2) and now, after POST, i get to my desktop in 24 seconds and the system shuts down/powers off in 7 seconds.

i am absolutely in love with the newer dv7se models. the black color is the sexiest finish on a laptop i've ever seen :D now i feel like buying another dv7 but i have absolutely no use for another laptop :( lol.

damn you HP for making sexy products!

I've been reading through the slickdeals forums and there always seem to be a couple whiners who complain about the reliability of HPs, complaining that they crap out after 2 or so years of use. I was wondering if there was any truth to that or if it's just a case of a select few being bitter and really vocal about their experiences? For owners of the previous-gen DV7s, how are you notebooks holding up?

^ 25 months later, my machine is still working flawlessly. no issue with the touch buttons, no hardware issues at all, no fan issues like some other people had. i think the ones that complain got lemons and/or they dont know what they're doing :)

i installed win7 x64 ultimate last year on this beast and it flies. i can see myself using this thing for the foreseeable future. no issues with the burner at all, no screen issues and i have the infinity display. i simply wish i had gotten an LED screen ( not an option at the time ) but it's all good bc this machine is still awesome :D

 Hi guys having some problems and need help ....My GPU gt320m is 44 degrees when in idle mode (when doing nothing) when i used to browse or playing utube or watching movies it rises up like hell to 78 degrees ..and also the fan is idle always why the hack its not boosting to its maximum speed to cool down the GPU and processor ...more often when i am playing games it rise up to 90 degrees ...and no noise of fan speeding up like it did when i boot the system ..its always idle ...speed fan is also useless coz it`s not showing rpms nor any fans ...i am also using coolermaster notepal u3 but still ..don`t show much differences ..there must be a solution for the GPU to stay cool at 45 degrees ..when in sleep mode its gets cool like 35 degrees but when i start working it again got up to high speeds  tell me if i am wrong ....GPU temps are 70 -90 its normal or not? ...pls help guys ..any help will be appreciated..!

I got my dv7 last year & liked it so much I just bought one for my spouse. Arrived yesterday & I'm rather disappointed in the case changes. Also surprised that the case is brushed aluminum (color, not material, I think). When they removed the color choice I thought all cases would be black.

I do like the color but why the heck did they remove the touch-sensitive controls? Those were simply cool! And the new touchpad sucks, IMO. Of course all touchpads suck for use, but last year's model had a hard switch to turn it on & off-plus hard buttons for left/right clicking. I had to try 6 times before this stupid thing would recognize the taps to turn itself off. Thought I was going to break it before I got it shut off.

Other than that it still seems one of the best out there.

    Hey everyone,

I've had my dv7t (corei7, gt-230m, 4GB ram) for a full year now (2009 black friday deal). It's working great, except that about a week ago it started having a fit much of the time I'd put streaming videos on. My CPU usage would max out and everything would start lagging, and the CPU usage would steadily slow down after I closed everything until being normal after a few minutes.

Anyone have any ideas why this would be happening? I'm not the most computer savvy, but I do OK for a non-CS college student - I"m hoping someone might be able to help!

    Thanks,
    Bill

Probably a software thing. Could be a trojan/malware. If not check the temperatures.
Verify the errors reports in administrative menu.

In addition to the drive, you will need a HP HD kit to install it. For the same drive look in your device manager under drives. You will see the model and mfg specified.

I purchased a DV7t Quad last December and am interested in removing my DVD and putting a SSD in the HD bay 1 and moving 500GB HD1 to the DVD docking bay. Does anyone know what the HP part # is for the DVD bay HD dock? I am planning on getting a 240GB SSD for HD1.

Also, can anyone recommend an external USB dock to handle the now external HP DVD writer?

    DV7T - UPDATE (12/27/2010):
So I have had my DV7t for a year on the road. It has 8GB memory, I swapped out my 2nd 500GB drive for a 128GB SSD and made the 500 GB HD external. Had GPU issues up until around May when HP finally released a reliable GPU driver. Since then no issues.

On thing I have noticed is that the HP assistant still kicks off, but for the past few months it finds no updates. Prior to that it found an update almost everytime. I don't know if this is a good thing or bad? Should I be receiving updates?

    -Matt

Very good. You can compare with scores list link i posted. For a 1000$ laptop you have almost half frame rate of best desktop machine which is 87fps. In CPU like it is expected a 12 core overclocked to 4.56ghz can get a 22 value and there is no way to hit it, but the best desktop 4 core have only a value of 5 and clocked at 2.8ghz so you are proportionally better since you are at 2.0ghz.

I just receive mine today, love it so far. i7, 500gb 7200rpm, 4gb ram.

Where is a good place to get a caddy to add a 2nd hard drive or does it come with one already?

Also, I was suprised the sound quality and volume was not better, is there a better driver to download to improve the sound quality? Do all these laptops have a built in subwoofer? Mine sounds like it does not have one.

Hello, I bought an HP DV7-3085DX (it's on the way), I was curious if anyone could let me know (preferably if you own it) if it has any troubling heating issues I might want to start preparing for.

    These are my general specs:

    i7-720QM Quad-Core
    6GB DDR3 RAM
    500GB 7200rpm HDD
    1GB NVidia 230M

If anyone could perhaps show the bottom of this model, or even better show me where the air exhaust and intake is on it. I built my own triple USB fan and I'm gonna construct a laptop cooler with the best spots to place the fans based on what anyone can tell me.

I am not a gamer and I will be installing Linux Mint 10 on this as soon as I get it and planning on using VirtualBox for any minor need for Microsoft and mostly for FreeBSD and Debian for any network services I might want to run or test on. :)

Thanks a lot, I appreciate any feedback.

My 2nd post here. Hello dudes...
It has been 6 years since I built my last PC. (AMD 3400 2.20 GHz)

I ordered this laptop on 12/27. It isn't going to ship until 1/24. I figure the Sandy Bridge i7 processor was going to cost a ton and wasn't willing to pay $1500+ on a laptop, but seeing the $1150 cost with the Sandy Bridge I think I am going to do a return. What do you all think?

I've got an dv7t-4100. I was wondering which cooler would be best for this unit? I've been using a coolermaster u2 for a couple of months, but it has been a bit inadequate, and the fans are starting to make some noise. I've got the 720qm, and the temps can get pretty hot sometimes when gaming (high 70's, low 80's.)

Would the zalman 3000 work best? Also, which area on the bottom of the laptop is priority in terms of the fans from the laptop cooler being over them.

I appreciate your help in advance. cheers

ps - would this custom one from ebay be sufficient? the price is great, and its a big fan

I've got a DV7T-3000 and have decided to wipe the system and reinstall Windows - I made the DVD discs, but was wondering if those contain the drivers as well, or if I should download them from the HP site and store them on another disk or flash drive?

Since you tend to keep your laptop for a while, why buy a technology which is being updated. By all accounts, the new SB has better battery life, processing power, graphics, multimedia. The price premium is rumored to be about 15-200 bucks.

Some one already bought a DV7 with SB for about $1150 with quite a list of options. Hope HP still allow you to cancel.

I thought the price premium was going to make my laptop that I ordered for $1100 to $1500+. (BlueRay burner and 8gb DDR3 were free upgrades)

They shipped my laptop early...should be here in 5-7 business days. So when I get it, I will call up and simply return it.

I plan on going on a very long vacation/move (4-6 months) and didn't have a laptop. I work at home, so I needed a computer with me on this move. If I wind up staying then I will build a new desktop.

    Hello all, noob here...
I just ordered a dv6tse three days ago....but I'm torn and am having 2nd thoughts.

I used a $500 off coupon and I had priced two laptops. Both ended up being around $975 shipped, and had similar features with two excpetions. I had ordered the Dv7tse with an i7, while the dvt6se had an ib, but it also had a touchscreen and back-lit keyboard. (Both had a 5650, a 7200rpg 640gb HDD, and 8gbs or RAM).

This will be used mostly as a desktop replacement, with some light gaming.

My question...since everyone here as the 7, did anyone have a touch choice between a 6 and 7? And if so....what make you go with the 7?

    Thanks!

Lil update on my DV7-3085DX. I find it seems to run hot, pretty much for no reason (not a gamer!), I seen the thing jump up to a high 80C. I have a lil bit of a custom fan setup but I have a feeling I need better fans, also, I have a high velocity fan (for cooling my person :D) that I pointed at the hot vents on the side, temp is down to 35C - 55C. Certainly will do short term.

The BIOS is F.04, any feedback if this is a culprit for poor fan operation that would be sweet, gonna upgrade the BIOS anyways to most recent.. I'd like to hope there are improvements in this area of the DV7.

Another sadness that suddenly was apparent was the DV7 already has 4 primary partitions used, thus making a Mint 10 install beside Windows 7, a pain in the bottom. Lovely.

panthermark: DV7 have much more resolution than Dv6.

Krysti:it doesn't matter if you are a gamer or not. Was your laptop CPU at 100% when it reached that temperature? if it did it is no big deal. If was way less then 100% then you have a problem that needs to be looked at.

Well, I got the restore discs made, I 86'd the restore partition to jam Linux Mint 10 on there. I got the BIOS updated to 1.1D (i think), whatever the recent one as of this post, and the machine is reporting back 34C GPU, 36-42C CPU.. doing well... sometimes even lower.

Just a tip, I think the fan coming at the side is def on to something with these models that have the corner vent. I'm going to make something more elaborate sooner than later to direct a computer fan into it because without the fan at the side it was running between 50C-80C+ depending on what it was doing.. how much of that is BIOS now using the fans properly (maybe) and how much of that is the fan I turned on at the side, no idea.. day 1 and these are my results. :)

Also I have a custom triple fan on the bottom w/ a USB cord I made, all 3 fans under the hot area. I don't think it does anything much due to the venting placement. :)

Good luck ppl, I'll come back if I figure out how to get this thing cooler.

I think I may take advantage of a good deal on one of the new SB DV7T laptops...

Right now they have $150 instant rebate, free upgrade to 6gb's of ram and an additional $200 off with a coupon code I found.

The one I configured ended up being $950, and that's with Office 2010 home and student included as well as a 9-cell and 6-cell battery.

    :)

Hmmm, do I buy this or wait until more info and pricing comes out for the new Envy 17?

I'm looking into buying this notebook HP Pavilion dv7t Quad Edition, but still debating b/w these two:
    640GB @ 7200rpm or dual hard drive 1.5TB (750GBx2) @ 5400rpm. WHich is better? Pros and cons?

Any help? Thanks. I considering making an order on HP site by tomorrow.

The slowest thing on your PC will be the hard drive... I vowed to never go "slow" again. My personal recomendation is to go with the 7200 RPM drive, unless you use the laptop for things that require loads of space, and 640 won't be enough for you.

Hi, I am new here. I have an Hp Dv7-3180us for about a year now. It has been an excellent machine so far, with the core i7 and all.

My only worried so far is about the working temperature. It normally operates between 65-75 C, when Idle and at work. Sometimes while gaming, it might go to 80 C, and I am using a Zalman NC2000 for cooling. Plus, where
I live it is usually 30 Celcius. I want to know if these working temperatures are normal or a bit high?

I am just concerned that because of these temps, this notebook might not last long even when it works wonderfully and I am planning to upgrade the ram and add an SSD to it in the future. I read about Krysti's post (since she has a similar model) and I can tell her temperatures are cooler. I had even try putting a fan on the side, with minimal effect. I just find a bit odd that in this model there is not wide vent underneath the main fan in comparison to other models, even in the online manual a big fan vent is displayed! Anyways, enough rant, and hope to hear some opinions about the temps.
