YES! Finally someone who saw the same problem! +1

Anyways, thanks for the link. I also hope both new dv6 AND dv7 have backlit keyboards. Having experienced both backlit and non backlit, I have to say I cant live without the backlighting.
And while we're talking about hopes for future laptops, I would absolutely LOVE to see the dv series' fingerprint readers become available on the envys aswell.

its possible. If they are borrowing from the FDH displays of today's envy 17 for the DV7, we could be in for a treat. First, "Full HD" in HP lingo means 1920x1080p, and the only FHD display available today (that I know of) is in the Envy. this display sports a wide viewing angle (so specified as WVA as well by HP) of 65 degrees horizontal, and 50 degrees vertical. It would be sweet to see that one on a DV 7, although they could have sourced a whole new display as well.

That seems to be the consensus of everyone who's had a backlit keyboard. Is it a significant drain on battery life?

shouldn't be much, with LEDs, but the impact won't be zero..

I don't think so. I tended to just leave mine on constantly, and it didn't seem to affect the battery life significantly. Also, the backlights are LEDs, which are very energy-efficient.

need to correct this. the CNET article is not correct. even the latest product demo content for the dv7t-quad, which appears to describe a product soon to be available (if not now I haven't been watching this one closely), specifically says "HD+" display, and this means 1600x900, not 1080p.

so no 1080p for the dv series.

as for the viewing angle, the dv7 1600x900 display, according to the manual, sports the same as that on the Envy. I'd suggest choosing the infinity display upgrade because this one appears to be a higher resolution panel (the pixel pitch is smaller = higher pixel density). This does not mean that the laptop will display better than 1600x900 it just means the panel is better. it is brighter too

Intel said that the chance to bug dv7qe hard drive is form 5% to 15% ... so it's not absolutly sure that your hard drive will disappear some day

Has anyone ordered a new dv7qe since the laptop came back to the site last week? Just trying to keep track of whether or not it has the new features that Engadget reported on a while back and the ones that it shows in the demo (despite the info listed on the site and the picture of the old silver version)...

I am considering getting a Dv7tqe, after my tax refund.

My current laptop is quite adequate and probably don't need a new one (but the screen housing is cracked from a fall, never RMA'ed it), since its barely a year old, but you know how it always got to have something better, the deals that HP has going now, can't be beat, that is why i been looking at the Dv7tqe.

in my current setup, i have a 80GB intel SSD, that i would like to transplant into the Dv7, it is capable of 2 HDDs even if i don't order it with 2, just checking...some manufactures disable the second hdd slot (ASUS has been known to do it)

Does anyone know how easy it is to tear down this laptop. I'm looking for either a video or even a thread with pictures. I'm looking to maybe buy this laptop but I want the ability to upgrade it later with out having to completely remove everything just to get to the RAM slots. Also is the GPU integrated or discrete, because I would like the ability to upgrade the ram later on as well.

The GPU is soldiered (like most laptops), and the RAM isn't hard to get to. (I've seen this case, so I know.) There's an access panel on the bottom for the RAM and the HDDs.

Ok, thats what I assumed, I have a dv9700 with one of the failed nvidia chips, yet unfortunately not under the lawsuit claim. Too bad would make a much better laptop if the GPU was removable and upgradeable.

    Thanks for the quick reply

Well, at least you won't have to worry about that issue with these.

By the way, for future reference, only call a GPU "integrated" if it lacks dedicated memory. If it has dedicated memory, call it "discrete," even if it's soldiered. (That's why I prefer the term "dedicated.") Just mentioning that because I've seen it cause some confusion before.

Its actually very easy if you follow this guide: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02642701.pdf It may not be your exact model, but it will work just fine. I was able to take apart mine very quickly and easily, and the only problems I had were because I missed one of the screws that were supposed to be removed.

Can someone tell me why on HP's website for the dv7t quad edition ( HP Pavilion dv7 and dv7t Quad Edition series | HP Official Store) the product demo is the new one but what they are selling is clearly the old one from back in January?
Any updates on a release date?
By the way, from the looks of it, no backlit keyboard, no higher res screen, and no high end graphics card
new features: USB 3.0, switchable graphics (what does this mean exactly? better battery life?), and coolsense. will there be a dual-band card? doubt it

For those having problems opening the product demo, here is the direct link: HP Pavilion dv7
Specs of the NEW dv7 (compare to overview and specs on HPs website and to product demo): http://h20424.www2.hp.com/campaign/.../resources/HP_Pav_dv7_2pp Brochure_FA_web.pdf (very slow to open)

I have a feeling that the new laptops are coming out next sunday (march 13th), but that's just a guess... talked to an HP rep today, she said "spring", which could be anytime

Based on HP's recent content updates associated with the Envy 17, HP appears to use the 'product demo' to tell us about an upcoming product before it releases. My opinion is that the various content elements on these product ordering pages are managed by different and un-synchronized groups/individuals, and that (at least in this case) the product demo was pushed out there first, heralding the new models that cannot yet be ordered. Unless they pull the content, I'd say you should be able to order what is described in the product demo within a couple weeks of its first showing.
backlit keyboard, 1080p screen, and high(er) end GP are reserved for the Envy line. Switchable graphics means that the laptop can turn off the Radeon GPU and render graphics using the on-chip GP in the Sandy Bridge processor itself.

This is just my read, but in my opinion the reps' knowledge is limited to what their respective teams and supervisors tell them, and very often they are themselves surprised by the content posed out on the various pages. We have to remember the size of HP and how complex of a process it must be to update content on hp.com and channel information to the sales teams at the same time. it wouldn't surprise me to see frequent disparities between the reps, and one or more elements of content out there (for example, it is not uncommon for the 'specs' tab to be out of sync with the 'overview' tab when a new product is in the midst of a release. This is clearly the case with the Envy 17 right now

Envy 17 3D with sandy bridge is out already. There are limited options and very little discount. For example, i don't see a option of selecting 7200RPM hard drive except the one with 800GB(160G SSD and 640G 7200RPM HDD for $580).

The non-3D Envy 17 is also available to order as well -- with the i7 2630 processor and 1080p display, it is $200 more than a similarly-equipped 3D model! Many of us over in the Envy 17 threads are astonished at these two points -- the cost of the non-3D flavor, and the fact that the single 7200 rpm HDD used to be a purchase option but is now removed.

but note that these Sandy Bridge Envy 17s are not "out" in the sense that you can take one home today. they can be ordered, but delivery is out approx 3 weeks. The first of the Envy 17 3Ds that have already been ordered are due as soon as today

I am still holding on to the defective dv7 tqe that i got from 1/21/11 and wondering what action i should take now. I want to return my dv7 and get a upgrade one. I can give up the Blu-ray writer (and use a DVD RW) for a Full HD screen to stay within my budget (<1,300). Looking around i don't see many choices i have. I have a few questions and appreciate any helps:

    - giving that we have til 4/30 to return the unit. Should i wait til then (for more choices of replacement) or should i do the return now (i can live without a laptop for a month or so)? would it be possible more models will come out by then?

    - Does someone have a success story of getting a upgrade product from HP with good discount? My point is if HP want the business, we may be in good position to ask for similar/better discount on the upgrade model similar to the dv7 we got.

    - I was hoping the new dv7 tqe would have the FHD but was very disappointed that it does not, not like what the Asia CNET said. I look into envy 17 and see the price is way more than i can afford. I am wondering what is causing the big price different between the envy 17 SB and the dv7 SB? from the specs they are quite similar except that the envy 17 has a FHD. Would it be only the look and metal case? Given we get more discount on dv7 the price difference can be $600 or more for similar specs.

    - It seems like for now the only choice i can get with similar price with the dv7 tqe is the sager NP 5170. But i will lose the 2 HDD bays to install a ssd + HDD and have to give up the optical drive for a 2nd HDD. Does anyone know of any other sandy bridge 17.3" FHD laptop that is < 1,300? I look into the XPS 17" 3D would it be a good choice (it is a little more than what i can afford after adding tax and other similar options).

Apologize for this lengthy post. I am just too desperate for help...

I'm on the fense as well...

More than one person has been able to get the $500 off coupon applied to on an Envy 17 3D. Did you use that coupon? Also, some people have been able to apply the $500 off on top of the $150 rebate for the new 6/7.

As far as I can tell, the "big" differences between the new DV7 and the Envy 17 3D are:
Better screen (with 3D of course)
    Back-lit keyboard
    Better graphics card
    Better wireless card
    Comes with Adobe

Outside of that....you actually lose a USB3.0 port with an Envy. I can't say that if that is worth the HUGE price difference....plus you lose the fingerprint reader. (which I never used). Norton is also not included (no big deal).

I priced these two computers with basically the same parts:
    ---
    DV7 = $1395 + tax. But there is also a $150 rebate make it it $1246 + tax.

$1246 vs $1735 before the $500 coupon and taxes. Is the Envy really $500 better than the DV7?

The HDD's are also different. 1TB at 5400 rpms vs 640GB at 7200.

I only had a $200 coupon + $150 instant rebate = $350 off the list price when i bought mine. I have not tried to negociate with HP. Partly because i am not so sure to go with the envy 17 and plus the they remove the 7200 RPM hard drive options which i want also. Hopefully, HP will add those options back someday...

What do you think about the XPS 17" 3D with sandy bridge? It has 2 USB 3.0 port, finger print reader, FHD screen, a max of 16 GB Ram, 3D capability, i7-2630qm and HD 550m? GPU all with a price of about $1,375 +tax after instance discount. I could get a $75 coupon to get it down to 1,299 a few days ago but i did not pull the trigger.

has anybody tried to return/exchange the recalled SB DV7 recently? I called HP to return my SB DV7 laptop and the HP support (non US) claimed they knew nothing of the intel recall. The first one 'support' claimed denied the existence of the recall and did nothing. I called again and the 2nd one also denied a recall. Only after walking him through the hp.com website with the recall information did the support guy believe me. after all of this, all he could do was get a 'manager' to call me on monday to resolve the issue.

right now, i'm trying to understand if this is typical hp or if I just happen to have spoken to the dimmest technical support people in the world.

any others thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.

I guess that's true since I called HP in February and they said they'd extend my warranty until April and have a Tech Support Rep called me when the fix comes around for the sandy bridge...Until now I still haven't received that call.

Are the current DVt Quads the refreshed ones? The new 30% off coupon is tempting & my config with ATI 6770 upgrade, 6 & 9 cell batteries is only $931. Just want to make sure these are the refreshed ones

    Thanks
    Mike

    hello -

i can't seem to get my blu-ray writer question answered from HP or from the website. Does anyone who owns this know if the blu-ray writer option writes to DL (Dual Layer) 50GB blu-rays, or only single layer 25GB blu-rays?

Also, does the blu-ray writer do lightscribe?

    Thanks.

Yes, that's what HP directed me to. It says "2x (BD-R) Write", so I'm assuming that means only single layer BD-R, but i'm not sure when it comes to writeable blu-rays whether or not they distringuish SL and DL in the writers or just the media.

So I was hoping someone that ordered teh dv7t with the writer drive can tell me whether it writes to 50GB media or just 25GB. Also, whether or not they had any problems with the writer. My other option is to buy a 5.25" internal writer and enclosure and use it through USB. Right now with the 30% off though, the writer upgrade (normally +$100) is only $70 more, which seems great for a writer, but if it doesn't write to 50GB media, then maybe i just spend my money on a better external?
