I have the dv7tqe-5000 (silver chassis). Does anyone else who has this PC hear any light clicks from the hard drive(s) once in a while? I have heard it on desktops and my old notebook, not sure if that is normal for a brand new laptop.
-
Anyone else notice HP has put a new color for the refreshed DV7t QE? It's called Steel Grey. HP Pavilion dv7 and dv7t Quad Edition series | HP Official Store
Also, where is the option for edge-to-edge glass (Infinity Display) on the new DV7t? -
I love the GRAY
I was so disappointed that the new models were brown at first. Now I can get one!
-
Yep, we mentioned it a few pages back. I seriously hope the silver color becomes the default ASAP as the umber brown color is way too ugly for my taste.
-
Agreed. They got a lot of blowback from the customers. Ugly color
-
The pics on that page show the silver / steel grey coloring but looking at the specs link on that page it states...
aluminum chassis in dark umber color (metal)
So they have an out to send you either, I suppose. lol. -
Lol. I am waiting a couple days to order. I want the gray one, and I don't want to take any chances of getting an umber one "by accident". I will wait until everything is clear that it will be the gray one.
-
Very cool, didn't notice mention of a new color a few pages back. I'm still a holdout from the Sandy Bridge recall and was hoping that a different color would come out. This is great news as I hated the poop brown coloring of the refreshed model.
-
Agreed. Poop indeed lol
-
Honestly I like the Brown/Black look, keeps the palm rests from looking like two puddles of mud after MANY hours of typing. (also it hides dirt slightly when showing it off
)
-
i never had any issues with my ex (dv7tqe-5000). No clicks from my experience.
-
Sorry guys, but I'm not getting the silver gray option at HP when configuring the DV7tqe...
-
No one has ever gotten it in first place...
-
I meant that I was looking around HP's site and no luck on finding any info about the new color...

I wonder why HP won't offer the backlit keyboard on the DV7? The DV6 has it. The Envy 17 has it. It seems like every laptop I look at has something I want missing.
The DV7 has no backlit keyboard.
The Dell XPS 17 doesn't offer a 1080p non-3d model. The recently replaced Studio XPS did.
The Toshiba A660 16" only has a low-res 1366x768 screen.
The Sony F series has a new 3D model( I have no use for 3d, let alone on a laptop) but the regular F has not been offered with Sandy Bridge processors as of yet. -
566 posts in the DV7 owner's section and not a single owner....
-
Well, considering that the DV7 quad edition with Sandy Bridge processors(post fix) just came out, I'd say that's no surprise at all. There wouldn't be too many of those on the market yet so a lack of owners would be expected.
-
I own two. Says so on my American Express statement.
I'd like to get to know them some day... -
It was on HP's site for a while, maybe it was just a placeholder for a later time. I found it by clicking on the DV7t QE and then the Gray Steel color showed up. I'm really hoping it wasn't a mistake on HP's part.
-
Yeah, I'm an expecting father of one, too. They tell me she'll be born on April 11.
I got the SSD, and I cross my fingers its works well. Never had SSD before. -
I have been looking and have the same comment.
But this may change -> Not sure if you are aware. Dell XPS 17 1080 non-3D model is on sale now!
one can get it with 3 stacking coupons to get $400 off and Free shipping. This is the non-3D version without the 3D glasses. My configuration is: FHD, 4G Ram, 500G 7200RPM, DVD RW, 9Cell, Blue-tooth, Backlit KB all for $1,050 including tax. I intentionally keep it 4G Ram and 500G HDD to cut the cost down thinking i can upgrade them later. -
For those of you like me who have the January released dv7t qe, read this thread about HP's fix not actually fixing anything.
HP continues to ship defective Intel 6 series chipset to cus... - HP Support Forum -
I went to the site and all I can find is the non-3D model in 900p. Do you have a link to it? Thanks!
-
Try this
Dell XPS 17 3D 1080p: Intel Core i5-2410M 2.3GHz (Sandy Bridge), 17.3" FHD (1080p) 3D, 4GB DDR3, 640GB HDD, 1GB GT550M, Bluray, WiFi-N, 9-Cell, Win 7 Prem $920 + FS - Slickdeals.net
Note: This is still the 3D version from Dell website. Only that you the 3D glasses ($149) is an option now. I really don't know exactly the distinction of 3D and non-3D. I am thinking that if i don't need to purchase the 3D glasses it would be a non-3D version. Maybe i am wrong. -
He didn't confirm the port numbers. HP might be using a third-party controller for the extra ports.

So your contention is that HP added a third party SATA controller to a laptop motherboard that already has a southbridge that was designed to handle six devices? I'd bet against that. Especially considering that this model was a stop gap design introduced in January and already replaced by a new model in March.
If on the other hand you're saying that HP added a third party controller to the motherboard after they found out about the intel recall as a workaround then that would be some amazing engineering. There's a follow up post showing the bios date as being February 23rd. He says he received the laptop mid-March. So that gives them maybe 4 or 5 weeks since the recall announcement to design a new motherboard with another SATA controller, etch them up, put together the new configuration and ship it out.
Seems more likely to me that they simply moved the cable. -
Intel allowed B2 boards to be shipped so long as ports 2-5 aren't used. If they're still using them, that might be grounds for a class-action lawsuit.
-
If you fully load this laptop - two hard drives, blu-ray, all the USB ports, eSATA...there is no way that at least some of the affected ports won't be used. They are looking at a class-action at some point.
-
Unless they use a controller for two extra ports. Highly unlikely, but still, it's enough that a confirmation would be nice.
-
-
Yikes! Yep, someone should sue.
-
I just don't get it.
I mean...come on...HP has to have better lawers then this? There is no way they would allow such a MASSIVE fraud to occur, when clearly it will be brought to light.
I am kind of starting to think, the bios does not reflect the new version...or something along these lines, nonetheless...seems REALLY strange. -
^^^ Good luck with this. Do you know how many defective products hp shipped out due to the lead free fiasco. I had a laserjet, dv6000, and dv9000 all die because of this over 2-3 years ago and the lawsuit thread is still very popular. They shipped those products for a long time after knowing they were bad. Do you think they will learn from their mistakes....prob not.
-
I agree. At best, some lawyers will make good dough representing a class, where all the class members get coupons for future purchases.
If you're that hell-bent about the issue, better resolve the issue on your own. -
Is the service manual for this model here? or is it the same as the 6xxx series basically?
-
Actually, it's more like the 4xxx.
-
i have a dv7 notebook with the chipset problem here, the BDdrive is connected to sata port 4. and i dont think i can manage a refund here, so is it okay if i still use it as usual if i rarely/never use the BDdrive? if someday the port 4 is actually broke and the BDdrive got entirely disconnected, will it affect port 0 where my HDD is connected?
-
Why do you think that you can't get a refund? When did you get it?
-
actually hp dont sell DV7 in my country, and i bought it from a distributor.
i have warranty, but since they dont sell dv7 here, that means they will send it overseas to fix it.
so i think i dont want to return/refund it as long the windows keep working and i dont use the BDdrive anyway.
edit: i read some other web, and i think the HDD will not be affected, and the port 4 where the BDdrive is connected will degrade about 5% in 3 years on normal usage, so since i dont use the drive i think it will be okay, though if it really degrading 5% nobody will actually notice it since it happens to BDdrive. even 15% degrade wont be very noticeable as the drive can still read/write. with it degrading overtime, i think the drive will entirely disconnected within more than 5 years. -
It is probably too early for anyone to confirm if the newest dv7tqe's are shipping with the new/fixed chipset (product number XW899AV), but I had to check.
I ordered a dv7tqe with the i7-2820 (HP product number XW899AV) on March 31st (to be built on April 11th).
Hoping it is the new chipset... -
It is the new B3 chipset as stated in the DV6/DV7 select edition/quad edition owners lounge... It will not be reported as such but someone opened theirs up and looked at it and confirmed the new chipset.
-
My new dv7tqe has been delayed another 2 weeks. THIS is really angering me... OVER a month to receive my system?!
-
From the looks of things, HP should have delayed the launch of the models 4-6 weeks. They clearly weren't ready. ( I'm assuming that the part they're having issues with is the B3 chipset; however, there's definitely a chance that the issue is with a Japanese component affected by the earthquake.)
-
I heard it was the sandy bridge processors that they ran out of, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the Japanese-made batteries as well.
-
I don't see why they would run out of processors. Do you mean chipsets?
