Hey guys, I am on chat with HP regarding Touch Pad
here is what they have to say (according to them they have not received any complains from customers regarding touchpad)
-
noor thanks for the touchpad info -- do please let us know what the resolution is from HP support
-
-
husky55, Will you please contact HP chat support, and register you complain regarding touchpad. According to them they are not getting any complains regarding that issue.
Thanks -
if I may add a suggestion here as well -- if the touchpad does not work as advertized or does not give you reasonable behavior or performance, then you guys should insist on a resolution and not just the priveldge of submitting feedback. you shouldn't have to depend on the multiplicity of feedback to get some attention to this -- you should get a resolution even if yours is the only one.
-
Well guys, here is rest of my chat with HP
They are suggesting I contact Tech support regarding touchpad
And the sales person, well she tries to upsell me on extended warranty

just wanted to share some info with ya'll
I have Been Following this thread since i got my dv7tqe on jan 18 or so...
Was having issues with getting a wireless card i wanted...dual band, becuase of the whitelist
then i found out about the bad chipset, so i started to think about what i was going to do...
well today i decided...
chatted with hp, and after chatting with them for a minute or so I then decided that they did not have the authority to do an exchange or solve my issue. So i ask for the number to the resolution department...
just got off the phone with a representative with the resolution department, which i was on hold, i bet it was only maybe 30 seconds. WOW
the resolution....
i upgraded to ;

back at'cha mikespda congratulations, and nicely played. the present Envy 17 is being heavily discounted and is a very strong and highly regrarded alternative to the DVs and their current problems.

Hey, guys regarding my touchpad problem.
Here is HP Resolution center solution
The agent that was helping me was not that helpful, i got her supervisor
They are sending me wireless mouse (on HP Dime) , to get me through for time being till they resolve SB issue, at that time they can swap my system.
Envy 17 sound nice, but i dont want to go back to older processor. -
I just want to know what the sustainable solution to this problem is. perhaps a perminant fix will be introduced to the newer models -
New HP Laptops Put an Axe to the Click Touchpads | News & Opinion | PCMag.com
Apparently new 1080p screen as well. And new SB south bridge chipset. How about adding USB 3.0 and backlit KB?
-
this is going to be interesting show to watch --- while HP parts with the apple 'me too' clickpad, Synaptics is already touting their series 3 clickpad technolgy.
1080p was less convincing though. Even the lowest model in the Radeon 6000M family (6300M) appears to support 1080p resolution, 3D and HDMI 1.4, but I coudn't find mention of a new 1080p display for the Dv series -- did that come from a different source? The HP News release specifically mentions "high-definition (HD) BrightView displays" which means 1600x900.
I noticed the article did mention a pair of (blue colored) USB 3.0 ports though. Even more interesting is the February 27 availability date! -
Can any of you please comment if you have had success in connecting the optical drive to SATA III (6G) port ?
I am contemplating my return of my dv7qe and would love to retain if this change of ports is possible.
I did see a couple of posts regarding this change in connection and did note that laptop did not boot after it was modified. Wanted to know if anyone had overcome that issue?
Thanks in advance... -
Why in the world you want to switch the port. Its not like it is going to crap out on you tomorrow. Its a progressive degrading thing, that may happen to 5-15%. You may cause more harm/risk cracking the back cover open and messing with the ports then that small risk of 5%.
-
Hello noor - thanks for your quick response.
Why in the world you want to switch the port?
well - since the problem is only with the 3G ports and not the 6G ones and I do not have any foreseeable use of eSATA port - I would not be impacted at all if both my HDD and Optical drives are connected to the 6G ports.
On the note about cracking the cover open - yes fully agreed - I have not done it before and I have no idea how damaging it could be - I assumed it would just be a traditional screw setup and never thought we had to crack open it
thanks again. -
I have done it, to put my SSD in. And it is not a simple unscrew procedure. You pretty much have to pray it open to the point it seems like you are ripping it apart. (probably design issue).
And there YES there is a open port for secondary HDD, but be aware HP BIOS is very restrictive. It does not have option to switch port for boot option.
I tried to switch b/w my SSD and HDD to boot from them alternately, but the option is not there. ONLY first slot HDD will be bootable.
That means even you hook up the DVD to other port, it may not boot from it.
If you still want to take your chance. Well its your machine...
-
I spoke with Micro Center yesterday about the SB replacements. The rep that I spoke with said they have extended the returns window to 90 days from the day of purchase. I would have the option to either bring it in for a refund, or a replacement if it is available.
-
As for Bios. How are you getting into it? When I hit F1, all I get are the specs. The only option is to Hit ESC to continue. There were no options or other screens to get to while in bios. -
It will only boot from default ports of DVD and HDD (default port)
to select between DVD and HDD boot option
Steps:
1. Hit ESC during boot
2. IT will give you options (1 to 4)
3. F9, F10 etc are designated for various options (I think it is F9 or F10)
4. Once you are there first screen is just information, you need to use left cursor key to move to next option set. Where option to make HDD / CD Rom / Network DHCP boot etc were listed.
That said, if you switch your DVD port, it may conflict with bios setting.
In my case I have put SSD in default HDD port, and move the HDD to secondary HDD bay. And now booting form SSD. -
Someone suggested I check in the bios to make sure those ports are active. But what I was saying is how do I get into bios. It's not like the bios screen I am use to seeing.
All I get is a text based display of the specs of the laptop. The only option I have is to hit the ESC key to continue, and it continues to boot up normally. -
Why are you messing with a completely good system. Put it back the way it was.
Gosh! Intel says there is 5% change of failure (and even that is during long term use). And you guys are making it worse by playing Doctor on your system.
Stop the madness! -
When I ordered my dv7, wifi was standard and there were no option, except for adding bluetooth. So I added bluetooth.
I always assumed that the Intel wifi will be a 6200 or 6300 or in the worse case a 5100 or 5300 Intel wifi card. All those cards are dual bands 2.4 and 5 GHz. Was I wrong about this dv7, somehow Intel came out with the 100 BGN and it is a single band 2.4 GHZ only. So for those who have dual bands in their network, watch out!!!
Another thing is after today windows update, the fan become very loud. I have set Coolsense to the quietest mode and it's still loud!!! WTH!!!
Still haven't heard anything about the details of how to go about a replacement and when that is going to happen. All kinds of dates about when that new dv7 dv6 will be available but nothing from HP officially.
I intend to change my configuration so how is that going to impact the replacement process and/or price? Or my dv7 is just going to be repaired? Killing the current to the southbridge transistor? Cheap and effective?

Does anyone have an ICC color profile for the screen? I´d appreciate it.
By the way, I´ve been playing FIFA 11 and the screen has "A LOT" of ghosting, I tried enabling AMD Overdrive but it doesn´t do too much to be honest. Any help please? -
good luck! -
@alstrike,
I used spyder2express to calibrate. I'll try to publicly publish it once I get home. -
Thanks a lot! -
Where can the date of "April 30, 2011" be found?
From this HP website: Intel® Chipset Design Issue May Affect Certain HP Desktop and Notebook PCs HP Pavilion dv7-4290us Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
It saids (in Q&A section):
3. When does HP expect to announce the service solution?
HP is planning to offer a no-charge service solution as quickly as possible after updated parts are received. We will inform customers through HP® - Laptops, Desktops, Printers, Servers and more when the service solution becomes available.
4. How much time do I have to return my HP PC?
Once the no-charge service solution is available, you will still have an opportunity to decide if you want to return your PC for a comparable product or refund or to participate in the service solution.
5. Can I wait to return my HP PC for a replacement until one with an updated chipset is available?
Yes, or you may have your HP PC updated by choosing the no-charge service solution that might be available sooner.
But no hard date is given. Does it mean forever -
-
I did chat with them moment ago. but no definite answer. He does not seem to know about it. He gave me a 888 number to call. But i have not done so yet. I will try it later today
-
-
I think Husky55 was asking if i have a Dv7/Dv6 that is affected then i can just call HP to find out when is the deadline for returning the laptop.
-
got it. well do keep us informed on what HP says and what you intend to do
-
-
@monkeymonkey, they have not replied back to the email / inquiry I made 2 days ago.
-
I appreciate it.
Thank you! -
There is one statement in the above article that bothers me: " Intel said it can ship chip sets in configurations that skirt the actual flaw; those shipments will resume in mid-February. But it will take longer to ship the actual replacement chips."
sounds like we might have to understand the "skirting" thing a bit better, and try to devine whether or not any production Dv7's are made with them. -
Here you go.
MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service -
I have to install it and then select it in "color management" right? -
-
got it. so when you said "from now" you meant "now" as in the date on which you had that converstion
late March/early April makes it a bit more dicey, but I would be surprised if the SB envy was not orderable by that time. And by the same reasoning (if SATA disease if really the common denominator) the Dv7 should be as well.

I hope all of you dv7 quad owners are still happy with your purchase. Even if you have to return them for a refund or exchange. I was only a week away from owning my own when Intel dropped the bomb. I was SO looking forward to getting one.
-
Yeah I'm still happy with teh DV7 quad. It' just knowing that I will have to send it back and possibly have to reinstall everything is what pisses me off. I hope I can just take an image of my drive before sending it in for the recall. Then when I get it back I can put the image back and I'm back up and running.
I would hate to have to do the migration assistant again. Then reinstall all the software, and migrate the information back.
Also I'm lucky I have extra hard drives, and computers and tech savy. But what if you did not have the another computer or hard drives or even tech savy. How are those people going to transfer their data? I know some people will say if they are not tech savy the might not have this model laptop/computer.
Because i'm sure when you send the DV7t in for the recall fix, they will not gurantee your hard drive will not be wiped out.
