if anyone can find a similar notebook to the zv6000 that's reliable, comes with a decent card, and is under $1500, i'd appreciate an opinion greatly.
-
You cannot compare a Pentium M 750 to an AMD Athlon64 laptop & call the latter less powerful in every aspect. However, the Gateway does have an ATI x600m, is lighter, better battery life, & has DDR2 memory.

I definitely concur on the issue of 32bit Vs. 64bit processors/op.systems/etc.
And the Dothan Gateway is pretty sweet, though.

The m460 looks like a nice notebook, especially with the x600 option, but it's still +$500 for basically just a better video card. The Pentium M 2.0 760 might beat a 3200+, but I think the 1.8 750 will be below or near 3200+ performance, depending on what you compare. The Athlon has a higher theoretical memory bandwidth, assuming they ever get the darn dual channel functional in this thing. [
!]
Also, it looks like gateway has a free port replicator deal going on right now, if you have a use for that. -

I got a stick of 512mb Kingston PC3200 in today and it's working perfectly. Hopefully when a bios supporting dual channel memory comes out I can just buy another stick of this stuff and be in business.
Does anyone know about controlling fans on this notebook? I have the AMD processor driver installed. Is that the Cool and Quiet they speak so much about? I tried installing what is labeled Cool and Quiet on their website, but it's only for Win2000. -

$300 more to be exact. A big price increase, but if you're into gaming this is a great laptop. The fact that it's lighter and smaller are other pluses.
<hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>
Sorry, I was comparing prices with the Office Depot deals. They seem to be having them a lot. Also, Circuit City and BestBuy will give you a similar config for under $1000 on sale. But your other points may outweigh the price difference for you.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
I see...is the fan that's always-on that noticeable (in a quiet room)?

I thought that only the Mobile chips, like the one used in the zv5000, will enable the fans to only come on at certain temp.

If the CPU's max core voltage is 1.5V (130nm Athlon 64 CPUs), the fan always runs. If the max core voltage is 1.4V or lower (Semprons, Mobile-class 130nm Athlon 64s, all 90nm chips) the fan only comes on at 55C and shuts down at 50C. I swapped a Mobile-class Athlon 64 into my zv5000z. It's nice not to have the fan running all the time, but now I can hear my 7200RPM HD.
I'm guessing that the zv6000's behave the same way. Too bad they made CPU swapping MUCH more difficult in the zv6000, according to the service manual.
Whether the zv6000 BIOS will support dual cores is questionable (I think it's likely), but in terms of socket compatibility and thermal limits it's ready. -

Someone recently stated @ zv6000forums.com that Centon memory from Chiefvalue.com (LESS THAN $50!!!) worked fine added on to the existing 512mb it came with.

So did you add this to existing memory that came with the laptop? Or is this all you have in there right now? I'm trying to add 512 to my existing 512 and want to make sure they are comapatible sticks. Also did you get DDR or DDR2?
thanks
<hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>
I added the Kingston stick with the manufacturer installed Samsung 256mb. I installed it to the expansion memory slot, but I would like to move the 512mb to the one under the keyboard for future expansion. Anyone have any instructions on how to get in there? I suspect it is much the same as getting to the stick on the zv5000. I could be wrong, though.
The Kingston is DDR400 PC3200 ram. It runs at the 166mhz clock since the manufacturer 256mb stick it is paired with is limited to that (PC 2700).Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

Ah, you're right, I was thinking of the Socket 754 Athlon XP-M's (that predate the Sempron brand name) that the zv5000z uses. The 130nm Socket 939 Semprons the zv6000 uses are 1.5V cores.

Actually both are right.
PC2700 is 333mhz because it is DDR (Double Data Rate)
The person before you stated 166mhz was not wrong becos its actually 166 x 2 = 332 ~333mhz

All right is the 200M as big of a hunk of junk as every one makes it out to be?
IÂ’m not a big gamer but I video edit and composite and some 3d animation.
I live mainly in the 411 DV world, but planning to jump to DVC PRO HD soon.
I use Avid, Combustion, After Effects, Boris Red and 3d Studio Max mainly, incase any one cares.
The point is IÂ’m all about open GL and RAM.
I know what youÂ’re going to say I should be doing this stuff on a Desktop but since IÂ’m never near it and it doesnÂ’t fold up and travel well I need a laptop.
I’m looking for a 15.4” bight view or equivalent screen they’re pretty
A good processor preferably 64bit
A good Graphics card
At least 3 hours of battery life (not while editing of course)
And all the other stuff that would normally go with an editing machine, DVD burner, S-video out and so on.
Oh yea I need everything under 1,700 including the 2 gigs of ram I plan to drop in it.
I know I might as well ask it to cook me diner.
What ever I buy I need good cheap ram that works in the machine any suggestions?
One last thing are zv6000 and R4000 the same thing only the R4000 is cheaper, or are there some advantages to the 6000?
Thanks one and all!

I'm not familiar enough with the 3D animation programs you listed (you're definitely OK for 2D work), but otherwise the zv6000 should work very well for you. Try these SODIMMs:
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4389075?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
They reportedly work in the zv5000z so they should like the zv6000. I don't think I've read any reports of Kingston or Crucial RAM failing to work. -

Has anyone tried These RAMS with the 6000 with or with out success?
Patriot 1GB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Notebook Memory Model #: PSD1G33316S
A-DATA 1GB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Notebook Memory Model #: ADFDB1A1607H
PQI 1GB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Notebook Memory Model #: MD321GUOE
Transcend 1GB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Notebook Memory Model #: TS128MSD64V3A
They don't have to be gig sticks that is just what I'm looking to buy.
Some one mentioned good cheap RAM on an earlier post but I can't find it?[V]
Does anyone have any online stores that they would recomend to but ram at?[^]
Anyone I should stay away from?[V] -

Try this link: http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4389075
Works for me in Firefox.
HP uses PC2700. Mixing PC3200 with PC2700 will work but will force PC2700 speed. If you want dual channel memory access to have a chance of working the SODIMMs need to be the same size. Two PC3200 SODIMMs may or may not work, there were a number of failures reported when that was tried with zv5000z's, but I suspect it will be reliable when HP switches over to the E-series (Venice, San Diego) cores with their updated integrated memory controllers.
DDR2 won't work, period. Different pinout. Plus it's more expensive, higher latency than regular DDR, and the Athlon 64's integrated memory controller doesn't recognize it. DDR2 is more of an Intel marketing thing than anything else.
There are reviews on newegg.com stating that Transcend 1GB SODIMMs work on other Athlon 64 notebooks so they'll probably work on the zv6000. I don't know about the other ones. I am skeptical of anything other than Kingston and Corsair until someone proves they work. Kingmax has a particularly high failure rate.
If you upgrade to WinXP x64 my understanding is that it replaces your old 32-bit license, therefore dual booting is out of the question. Buying a separate WinXP x64 license (about $140) from Newegg, MWave, etc and installing that on unpartitioned HD space (resize your existing C: partition or reinstall 32-bit WinXP) should allow you to dual boot though. With the exception of device driver issues you're unlikely to have any further need for 32-bit WinXP though. -
4) Do you think Win XP 64 will be worth it? Can I make my laptop a dual boot OS just in case even if I get the free up grade?
As you've probably read, the biggest problem with xp64 is that fact that it is incompatible with 32 bit drivers. Therefore, you should be aware that printers etc will not work considering that noone has gone through the trouble of created 64bit drivers. What i will be doing is waiting for probably 6 months or however long it takes to get new drivers.
Windows claims that if you do use the upgrade to xp64 you automatically void your regular xp pro and it becomes impossible to revert back. I'm guessing this means that you cant have a dual windows OS. -
doh, you answered a minute before me. sorry for any repeats [

how do you compared ZV6000 with nc6000?
-
The only advantage, if any, of getting the zv over the r4000 is that it has a built-in infrared receiver...but, you could always add that on to the other one later (with the compaq expansion base)

Coolfg,
I'm actually thinking the same thing...but I haven't received mine yet (sometime this week)...I might possibly order the r4000 since it looks pretty nice, too. Then return the other after a few weeks. But, i'm gonna contact HP to inquire about the Ir function & its uses.

Personally, I like them equally when open/in-use...Prefer the zv6k from the front when closed (the volume buttons, indicator lights,etc.)...But, also prefer the R4000 from top when closed & it's awesomely unique button that opens the notebook.
