I had all sorts of problems with SP3 so I'm back on SP2. I don't know what my Vista temperature or other stats were to compare but I do have way less battery life (only about an hour) then I've seen in reviews for this machine (review are running Vista). So for lack of further information I'd put it down to a Microsoft conspiracy against XP![]()

jlufanatic, you will need to be running XP 64-bit in order to utilize 4GB of memory. 32-bit operating systems will only recognise a maximum of 3.2GB.
I've had a quick look around, I couldn't find anything specific for your particular model on RAM upgrades but dv6500's seem to all have the same/similar motherboard and I'm told it accepts 4GB. I'd ring HP and enquire about upgrading just to be sure. Also get the exact memory specifications so you can tell your supplier the memory you need or double check what they recommend.

How would I go about backing up the Vista install on my laptop just in case the XP install fails?
And will this guide work for the dv6700t special edition as well? -
it should work for dv6700t special edition too. its not different hardware wise.... just has a different case. looks awesome though -
about the RAM upgrade to 4GB, you will need to buy 2 RAM sticks (2 x 2GB) because both slots are already filled.
in order to fully utilize 4GB of RAM, you will need a 64bit Operating System.
i have not found WinXP 64bit drivers so i cannot support it.
Linux's 64bit OSes are nice but not my cup of tea. (also driver headaches..... bigger than XP 64bit)
only other option is Vista 64bit SP1.
my dad just got a computer with 4GB of RAM.... but the stupid manufacturer gave him a 32bit Vista SP1.
funny thing is, under "system properties" it says 4.00GB of RAM
but only about 2.8GB of RAM available to Windows...... i thought max was 3.2GB
anyway, be sure to upgrade to Visita 64bit (with SP1, cuz its so much better) otherwise, you are not looking at major gains.
i will have to upgrade my dad's OS though -
have not tried it on the laptop since my computer already runs so perfectly. i dont want to mess around with a perfect system.
(besides adding more RAM, but i dont need it.... XP with 2GB is fine) -
hey is it just me, or is the sound that comes from the power brick really annoyingly earsplitting?
-
does anyone know if the driver pack on the front page works with the dv2600 series laptops? I have a dv2612ca and would like to install XP on it
-
i got inconsistent results. so its either hit or miss.

23. The following is optional Open windows explorer to your Windows directory, and delete the contents of the Prefetch folder.
24. Install Windows Updates, all your programs, etc.
25. Delete Prefetch contents again.
26. Reboot.
What would be the purpose of these steps?
I have a dv9830us "dv9000" -
I have successfully installed Windows XP SP3 on my HP Pavilion dv9312tx. Many thanks for that excellent guide.
I have a question nontheless. I want to try out Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Will it work on my laptop? -
Grand Admiral -
The prefetch folder stores details of your system's startup and applications startup to help things load faster. I've noticed that the prefetch folder can get a little clogged with details for programs which are no longer installed. This shouldn't affect performance in any way (by my understanding of how this system works) which is why the step is optional, but in the interests of keeping your system tidy you can use this step (since hopefully you won't be running any of the installers again).
Grand Admiral -
at this point, all of the programs you used are installers and whatnot. deleting the contents of that folder helps boot your system faster. then once you start using your everyday programs, those applications will be prefetched.
after that, you wont have to delete it again. unless you want to.
btw, you have a dv9700 -
-
thats what i heard as well. i but i also heard that its based on XP Home. it doesnt matter though
-
Hey everyone, i'm loving my new dv9700t and trying to downgrade to XP for performance reasons. (seems like that's the universal reason for all).
However, I have a problem. It seems like everytime I try to install service pack 2, my computer goes into this automatic reboot everytime i reach the startup screen.
I can hit safe mode just fine, and even restore back to the original XP before SP2 and it runs just fine in normal mode. but anytime i even touch SP2, my computer is unable to support it... which sucks because SP2 does have a lot of advanced features which i would like to have. (plus some programs require SP2)
can anyone shed some light??

hi, i recently bought dv6840 and want to downgrade to xp. Was wondering if this guide works for my model and if not where can i find the drivers etc.?
thanks in advance -

Allow me to put an end to the media center debate (since my SR1965AN is running MCE2005). Its definitely built on Professional, it has the advanced file sharing and permissions features which Home Edition lacks.

Now I have a question. The battery on my dv6519tx keeps depleting by itself. I turned it on today after a few days of inactivity and the battery was down to 78%. I've checked the Ethernet adaptor (which is the only network connection which has wake from standby capability) and the option is off. Does anyone know of anything else that could be using battery while the computer is off?
Grand Admiral -
On closer examination it might have been my touchpad and keyboard. Both had allow device to bring computer out of standby ticked.
Grand Admiral -
so your computer would come out of standby by itself? or would the battery deplete more quickly than normal?
[edit]
but how are u going to bring your computer out of standby if u unchck those options for keyboard and touchpad? -
I never use standby, only hibernation and for that I always use the power button to bring it back to life. I'm just guessing on the keyboard touchpad thing. All I know for certain is my laptop is using battery when its not on for no apparent reason and its getting annoying.
Grand Admiral -
-
If that is the cause its a bit of a design flaw! I left my laptop off for 3 days and the batter had drained to about 76% so it does lose quite alot of power.
Grand Admiral -
i lose about 1% per hour when my computer is on standby and not plugged in.... how much are you losing?
-
I wasn't sure, but now I will do it.. BTW thanks to the OP
for this thread. Everything is working perfectly... -
I have a dv9500t upgraded to XP (thanks to this forum!) -- and I have always noticed that if I have my computer completely shutdown, but leave the battery in, the battery will slowly drain. So I always take the battery out when the computer is shut down now...
-
hello everyone!!
Thanks to this guide I installed XP on my HP DV9500t longo ago. Works AWESOME!
I was wondering what is the LATEST VERSION OF THE DRIVER PACK.
This thread has become pretty long, and it is difficult to search inside it.
Thank you very much
Danny Bullo -
A link to the latest pack is on the very first page.
Grand Admiral -
it hasnt been updated in a long time. probably 8 monthslol
but as long as the computer is working fine, there is no need to update. unless an update particularly solves a problem that you were having.
------
so far, no [driver] fix for the following:
1. microphone very weak, or not working
2. my webcam stopped working (wth?)
3. strange battery drain while computer off (is it normal?)
4. no quickplay directplay (no fix for this ever.)
------
should i post this in the original post also? i feel as if very few people actually read the post..... i dont want to make it even longer than it already is because then people will not want to read it even MORE. lol i hope everyone gets what i mean.
anyway, anyone watching the Olympics? im enjoying it!! wish i was there, competing though -
Hey guys. Great guide, thanks so much. I've successfully got my DV9748TX dual-booting XP Home SP2 and Vista Ultimate 64. Everything seems to be running fine and there are no !'s in the Device Manager.
However...
The only reason I bought the thing was to run Cubase SX3, hence having to load XP as it won't run in Vista. When I try to load up a song that uses a sampler I get a message saying "Physical Memory is getting low! Loading more samples might cause problems". When i continue, and try to play the track, it skips like hell, as a track would on my old PC when I had overloaded it.
For example - there's a song that my old, underspecified PC would run showing 45% CPU usage and no Page File problems. The same song on the far better specified DV9748, the CPU meter is jumping around and red-lining constantly, and playback is totally skipping.
The DV9748 is Core 2 Duo 2.5ghz, 4Gb Ram (only 3Gb showing under XP) and 500Gb hard drive. I've installed and activated the Dual Core processor fix, and I've run Winflash from the HP site (version F.58A), but no difference.
Anyone got any ideas? I NEED to solve this problem! -
Hi mujjuman
I am Jesh
Thanks for your all help. I am dv 2500 user. I followed your instruction to install winxp on my system. Everything i did that u told but when i started after the windows setup will start -- the following error message blowed
A problem has been detected...
The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compiliant. Please contact your...... for update the BIOS. Your Vender is not ACPI compliant, you can turn off ACPI mode during text mode setup.
Is there any solution??PLease Please -
Is anyone have CD for installing XP on DV2500 with SATA disabled?? Please help me? Vista is getting ridiculous for me.
Jesh -
its very easy.
otherwise, i doubt this forum supports illegal filesharing.... although getting online copies of WinXP is legal, as long as you buy/own your own Product Key.
so my first theory is that XP doesnt support the hardware fully 100%
my second theory is that it is related to a BIOS problem. is that the latest BIOS that you flashed (F.58A)?
my third theory (and most likely) is that its a Cubase problem. i did some research on the program (cool prog) and i found this thread:
http://www.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=59877&highlight=4gb
looks like it cant support more the 2GB and since you have around 3GB working in XP 32bit, it gets confused (bug). you can try one of the fixes online, i think its called the "/3GB" fix that you put in your boot.ini but please DO SO AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION. meaning, im not responsible if your computer is messed up because of it (my disclaimer).
also see:
http://www.nativeinstruments.de/forum_us/showthread.php?t=26770
please let us know how it goes.
what is your exact model #
among all the dv2500 laptops that tried to install XP and had problems, this is the first time i heard of this... -
-
Thanks again !
After one year, Windows XP is running fine on my HP dv9580eg. I reinstalled using the 1.10 driver pack and now the performance increased significantly (especially in gaming area). I think the video driver included in the package is one of the best i have ever had (tried up to ~15 different versions). Besides better performance, I can now resize my HDTV desktop to reduce overscan when using HDMI over my Samsung LE32R71B LCD Television. Also, I am able to overclock my GPU after installing N-Tune (I couldn't do this using other drivers - the frequencies keep going back to stock).
I wonder if there is a way QuickPlay can be installed on Windows XP...
Keep up the good job ! -

What BIOS version is yesjesh using? My understanding is that versions after F.13 broke XP compatibility until it was restored in F.2A. The symptom was the message yesjesh pasted. -
lol thanks for posting that up. it didnt sound familiar.

If you run into a problem installing it (i.e. only HP DVD Play wants to install or you get a message that "This software can only be installed in authorized machine") refer to my instructions in this thread:

But it's still bottoming out on processor performance. I think I may just have had an expensive lesson in that mass produced consumer notebooks aren't designed for high end audio applications. I'm sure it's not running as well as it could, but I think that even if it was, I wouldn't get the performance I was expecting.
I also looked at OCing, but of course my clock generator isn't supported.
Thanks again for your help mujjuman. I guess $2300 is ok for a portable dvd player. -
-
yeah i mostly agree with you when u said that mass produced computers arent good for high end work. i dont do much high end work anymore... and when i did, it was on my desktop which i personally built
i would advise against OCing this laptop (if you have any of the dv9000+ variants) because they produce too much heat.... inadequate cooling WILL mess it up... if not sooner than much sooner than expected.
anyway, im going to try and find a copy of cubase... dunno if its free or not. im going to try and replicate the problem.
u said it happens when u play a sample?
