Could you answer any of the questions about the GPU differences between the 15 and 17/17 3D?

A lot of people are assuming that the two video cards are the same, etc etc.

Well, going off the numbers that I provided in my story with the prototypes, I can tell you that did not perform like they are the same card. I'm still questing to find people not on vacation that can confirm answers to some of the questions you guys have been asking (I have been bugging folks here -- believe me! ;p).

Or, if my 17 shows up sooner, I'm sure that I could put a little more of this stuff to rest. But rest assured that I am trying to get some answers.

....and I planned to install Skyrim on my new ENVY. Until I took an arrow to the knee.

Many moons ago the internal codename suffix was also on the final product. LE, Pro, and XT were on the retail name to designate increasing levels of performance. This was changed with the release of the desktop HD 3800 Series in late 2007.

The HD 2950 Pro became the HD 3850 and the HD 2950 XT became the HD 3870. HD xx30 for LE, xx50 for Pro, and xx70/xx90 for XT.

The HD 7690M was always meant to be Thames XT.

NotebookCheck is an unreliable source for unreleased and untested products and even then the reliability is questionable once released and tested (I still use it, but with a large grain of salt). Benchmarks are merely an attempt to show how a product will perform, they are not always accurate and results can vary quite widely even with the same hardware configs. Too many different scenarios for benchmarking (not including the questioning of how well benchmarks and games evaluate performance) make results on NotebookCheck unreliability.

I played Skyrim on high settings on my 2nd gen Envy 15 with a 5830. If a 6770 can't even do that, there's something wrong.

I agree that synthetic benchmarks are pretty unreliable, but how well games run is the definition of evaluating performance.

Skyrim is shown on there as only above 30 fps on medium settings with the 6770m in various configurations. Again, I'm not saying 10-20% faster than that is terrible, it's okay. I'm just hoping the 15 isn't substantially gimped below that.

I agree - the only way you can check out how a GPU performs is by actually testing it yourself in your own environment, not by seeing what people with a pre-configured setup did with it.

Even then, I am more inclined to follow the numbers put up on "The Next Bench" - Gizmo even stated that despite the similarities, the cards did not perform as if they were the same. I also doubt they just made up numbers either.

Either way, we can wait until Stefan posts what FPS he gets on hat settings when he gets around to installing Skyrim on his ENVY 17. We'll then get a better idea. He could also test out the games that were tested on "The Next Bench" - and see how his laptop compares to their test system.

Point is, neither the 7690M or the 7690M XT have been tested by Notebook Check. Neither of them have been properly compared to other cards other than on "The Next Bench", and we'll have to wait for either Stefan or another poster to help us with our tests. So far, all we know is that the new cards are partially based on the 6770M - that doesn't mean they will perform the same. Assumptions are your enemy.

Alaska in December could be a bummer, but I'm sure FedEX must be able to handle it if they use that as a hub.

You mean Friday the 23rd right? Your hopes cannot change the calender, LOL!

All of your early purchasers so so darn lucky! I just bought my Envy 17 2nd gen back on Oct 3rd, but it is so perfect, I decided to keep it and just purchase a 2nd unit after the holiday rush and after some people actually got them in their hands. I definitely will be buying another Envy in Feb or Mar, but at this point, I don't know if I will be going with a 3rd gen or sticking to my original quest for the Envy 14-2160se. See I really like the All Black Envy and since it will be my "MOBILE / BACKUP" unit, it should work out rather well, plus the price drops should be pretty significant by than. I would also like to extend the following wish to All:

I would like to wish "YOU" and "YOUR FAMILIES", a very **Merry Christmas / Happy Hanukkah** and a **Happy New Year**!

May you and your families get everything you wish for under your TREE or beside your MENORAH, and may 2012 bring Happiness and Prosperity to all!

My 15 got picked up after FedEx cutoff too. Now scheduled for 23rd instead of 22nd delivery. Just hoping it doesn't lose another day in customs like the 14 did or it won't be here before Christmas! Also in Texas cwfnetman.

So the 17" Envy is starting to ship and my still hasn't been cleared.

I ordered on Dec. 8th and still nothing. I was really hoping that it would come before Christmas but if it hasn't shipped by tomorrow, then there is no chance for it to come. (I'm still clinging to hope.)

By the way, I did pay for 2 day shipping.

I wonder if customizations have anything to do with production times? I ordered a 3 hard drive configuration (an SSD with 2 x 1TB drives) so does that add extra testing time?

If your Envy 17" or 17" 3D have shipped, can you let me know if you made a lot of customized options?

Isn't AK one of the closer spots from China based on how routes are typically flown?

    In comparison, I ordered my 17 3D with an i7 2670M, 8GB 1300Mhz Ram, 1.5TB HDD @ 7200rpm (750GB x2).

    Mine has shipped already.

When FedEx opens, they'll have the proper customs people there. Not much different than how mail may not be delivered on holidays, but that doesn't mean it's not moving at all. It just can't pass the next non-FedEx chokepoint.

Oh by the way Stephan67, thanks in advance for when you start commenting on how Skyrim and some other games work as well. I don't want to sound impatient, but all this forum watching is making my day go by faster. So any new posts or info helps a lot!

    @Stevester,
Thanks a lot. Does that AG listed on the 15.6 screen mean anit-glare coating and if so, that is different from what we have been hearing about glossy. Anyway, thanks.

Thanks Stefan, forgot you don't have 1080p on that thing thing. I'm sure playing at 1600x900 is fine for most on a 17 inch screen anyway.
