It is cheaper for you to drop in two drives...then upgrade later. This way, you have two HDD carriers and only replace the boot drive. You can pick up SSD's with three year warranties for a decent price...both Crucial M4 (256 GB) and Samsung 830 series (256 GB) both run about $379. You will save that much ordering two HDD's alone...plus the fact that the SSD that HP uses is the Intel 320 series and it is SATA II. Get a SATA III drive and enjoy the full speed benefits. BTW...I mentioned Crucial and Samsung for both are very very reliable and fast. Beware that drives constructed with the Sandforce controllers are still having a lot of BSOD issues, even after they claimed to have cured it with the latest firmware. Intel makes nice SSD's...but vastly overcharge for them. The Intel 510 is the exact duplicate of the Crucial M4 and they charge about $200 more for the Intel name

happened to the dv6t select edition having a 6770m....? Now the only dv6 with a gpu is the dv6t quad edition, which has a "1GB Discrete GDDR5 Graphics AMD Radeon(TM) [HDMI, VGA]". Looks like HP's giving them new Radeon gpu's too...

If a buy a Crucial M4 after I buy my Envy, how would I go about installing it and what not. I'm not really good with all that stuff. Like firmware updates and what not?

Real easy, apparently no screws to get the covers off on these envies too. Just pop it off, unplug the connector from the existing hard drive, unscrew the hard drive mounting bracket and attach to ssd, and replace into laptop.

If HP is really serious about going after Apple with the Envy they should come into the forum and offer to send him a new laptop as well as some kind of upgrade (like the 1080 screen) for his troubles. We are all early adopters here and HP can make a huge impact by keeping us as loyal customers.

Well since my 3D 17 still says "in production," I'm not sure early will be the best term for me. Day 1 orderer. Day X receiver? Oh well, was thinking I'd get it before Christmas, but that's not going to happen.

I don't see this laptop playing battlefield 3 unless on low. BF 3 is the main reason I gave up on PC games. They design the games to sell video cards.

Looking at the customize screen for the graphics card of the dv6tqe it shows this:

1GB Discrete GDDR5 Graphics AMD Radeon(TM) [HDMI, VGA]
    Included in price

1GB Discrete GDDR5 Graphics AMD Radeon(TM) [HDMI, VGA]
    +$25.00

2GB Discrete GDDR5 Graphics AMD Radeon(TM) [HDMI, VGA]
    +$75.00

HP won't even tell you what graphics card your shelling out another $25 or $75 bucks for! There has to be a NDA between them and AMD for them not to name the cards. If not, HP really needs to get their act together.

Lol! that's a laugh, the ridiculously long console cycles have slowed graphics innovation to a ridiculous level. Crysis 1 on very high is still the most graphically intensive game there is, and it was released 4 years ago.

I'm fairly certain DICE didn't code BF3 in an attempt to sell video cards for AMD and NVIDIA with whom they have no affiliation. They simply made a game that actually advances graphics in games, instead of using the same 7 year old Source engine over and over and over like Valve.

That does not bother me one bit. not everyone likes spending money every 2 years just to play a game .I just got gears of war and that game looks beautiful on my HDTV and I didn't have to worry about system requirements.

Why do you think think you see the nvidia or AMD logo in games . They don't do it for free.

Yeah that's pretty absurd. Guess we know it's not just the Envy that HP is screwing around on, they are just being duplicitous across the board.

I'm fairly certain AMD has already announced the 7600 series cards, I don't know why they would still have an NDA on specific models within the line when they have already released info about the entire line being rebadges.

If you have fun that's all that really matters.

Just know that games like that, played on a 360, rendered at like 576p and upconverted to your TV res, with no AA, no dynamic lighting, poor textures, etc. etc. probably still looks worse than playing it on your laptop on low settings.

Plus I have seen the m11x with 540m run bf3 on medium high and that card is not even in the same class as this. Granted the m11x has a low res screen but still. I see This laptop possibly pushing upper medium settings @ native res at least.

how can you say crysis 1 is still the most graphically intense game when C2 and B3 and a whole slew of games now have beat it out in several areas?

Crysis 2 was graphically inferior to the original. BF3 is good but Crysis still edges it out.

so i'm getting my envy 17 friday, got my mushkin chronos deluxe 120GB today, though looking at the hdd caddy i got for it its is an hp envy hdd caddy, but its for the previous model, and it looks like only 2 maybe three holes are going to line up, so it looks like its time to break out the dremel and do some modding

Did someone say that the "radiance" screen on the 15" is matte?

So, you didn't care when you came in here, and now that about 5 people on here had differing opinions, you want to go through the trouble of returning your computer, waiting 4 - 5 months, and re-buying it?

The GPU isn't even that bad. It's a step up from last year, and can play the latest games at decent frame-rates and resolutions.

Unless you need something like a powerhouse ASUS G74SX with a 560M in it to play the latest games on very high settings, this is a much better computer overall.

The radiance panel on the ENVY 15 is an IPS glossy display.

The .28nm GPU's are first going to desktop. Looks like yields are low. You may be waiting awhile for mobile .28nm.

    AnandTech - Introducing AMD?s Radeon 7000M and NVIDIA?s GeForce 600M Mobile GPUs

Read through the entire article and you will see that Nvidia is doing the same thing...rebadging old architecture into a new name...At least AMD tweaked the card in the Envy to XT with better performance

Charlie mentions this for the desktop side as well.

    Low-end Radeon HD 7000 series; AMD re-brands | SemiAccurate

nVidia only goes as far as the GT 635M. They have to be planning on 28nm for the remaining lineup. Slides show the GK107 with PCI-Express 2.0 and the remaining Kepler line up with 3.0.

    http://vr-zone.com/articles/nvidia-sampling-kepler--gk107/13662.html

Something is going on with the GK107. It's probably Fermi on 28nm for a test run before larger dies.

See my previous post, I pulled the build config for my envy 15 from my HP CSN account at work and the screen comes up as AG (Anti-Glare). So the panel itself is indeed a matte finish but whether or not there is a glossy film/glass in front as some have suggested it doesn't say. I think what it is is that the edge to edge glass covers over the lcd panel and makes it look "glossy". I would imagine that having glossy glass overtop of a glossy screen would not look good.

So Envy 15 or Dell XPS l502x, that is the question I'm debating. I need a new laptop and just can't decide between the two. The price will come out nearly the same, but I'm still on the fence.

Anyone else notice that the info obtained from stevester's cns account lists a 7690m gpu, whereas if you type the envy 15 product no. in the HP partsfinder (LY277AV) it lists a board with a 7670m gpu? See: HP PartSurfer My guess is stevester's info is likely more accurate but that's just a guess. All will be revealed come Thursday morning I guess.

Thats exactly why I took the plunge. I'm not waiting another 6 months or more for a fully tested 28nm graphics card to get released for mobile or for it to get fully tested and working to its full potential. I feel like it's not going to be abysmal.

I don't even mind the design of those so much it's just the unnecessary thickness. Clevo fits faster GPU's in smaller cases, there's no reason for Asus to make the thing 4 inches thick with a 560m in it.

I can't wait to get my hands on my new ENVY 17 3D. It shipped yesterday, and it will be arriving on the 23rd. However, I won't be able to touch it until about 2 weeks from now because I am in Afghanistan, so I had it shipped to a friend in NY who will forward it to me.

I currently own the ENVY 17t-1100, with the i7 840QM and Radeon 5850M. I am selling it to a friend here so I don't just "throw" my money away. I didn't expect this laptop so soon (not even 1 year old), but the fact that it overheats when playing just about any game is really annoying. I can't go 20 minutes into Portal 2 without the laptop shutting down on me telling me there's a temperature crisis.

I am not sure if to be happy or sad about the Radeon 7690M XT included in this model. How I see it, is pretty mid end. But the fact that it's said to be faster than the 6850M makes it "ok". I had to call HP several times to find out: What the GPU model is, whether it supports RAID 0 or not, and whether it uses SATA 6Gb/s or 3Gb/s. The monkeys in customer service gave me mixed answers. The ones at live assistance had no clue what they were talking about and were basically reading what was on the site to me.

Me: What is the SATA interface on the laptop, 6Gb/s or 3Gb/s?
HP LA: They come with a 750Gb HDD upgradable to SSD...
    Me: Eh? I'm talking about the interface you idiot =_=;

Me: What is the exact GPU model in the laptop?
    HP LA: AMD Discrete Graphics
    Me: Yeah, I can read that myself, thank you. I need the EXACT model =_=;

Me: Does it support RAID 0?
    HP LA: No.
    Me: *calls HP*
    HP Lady: Yes.
    Me: lolwut?

This around Dec 10 or so.

If you say that 7690M XT is slightly better then 6770 and 7690M XT is twice as fast as 7690M that means that 7690M is slower then 6770?

lololol. The level of knowledge on HP's tech support is quite laughable. It's even scarier to think that at the exec level, they probably know computers at a level similar to these idiots.

I remember once I sent in a HP elitebook with a broken trackpoint (or the , whatever you want to call it) and a missing key. The lady said they'll replace the keyboard under warranty for the missing key, but the trackpoint, which is right in the freaking middle of the keyboard, would not be covered under warranty. I had to fight with her on the phone for a good 15min before I request a supervisor. I honest don't think she knew what a trackpoint was.

The moral of the story is:

on the scale of technical knowledge

Computer engineers -> foxconn employees who put these computers together -> folks at NBR -> HP marketing reps -> HP sales reps -> HP execs

Think about it, do you think there's enough volume of packages sitting in Alaska to justify a straight flight to washinton? Doubtful. Rather it all goes to oakland where it will be further distributed from that hub.
