You had an Envy 15 though. The Envy 17 is a bit larger and might have better cooling so I'm more curious about that one. Still, sad to hear yours is really noisy.
-
-
yeah the fan noise was the reason i sold my alienware, it sounded like a shuttle launching. this fan seems abnormally loud though for what i'm doing, i've got coretemp running and the hottest any of my 4 cores is is 38 celcius, and the fans are still going strong. weird. this is the first laptop with the fans going like this just at idle that i've used before
-
Maybe it's some drivers? Not sure, but is it really really horrible? Or just abnormal?
-
No, where did I say that?
But the noise level of it is a bit high. But then, the computer is almost two years old and I guess the fans aren't shiny shiny clean.
But it is of interest to know how fast the computer cools down from getting out of heavy load. How fun is it to quit a game and then the computer is as noisy for an hour? Just curious about the time it takes from the fans (and the heat of the computer) to go from full load to what it would be at idle. -
it's more just abnormal than anything. there's no reason to have them on at this temperature inside the machine. i'm going to check the bios to see if theres any fan settings or anything in there. i know with my old alienware the guys at bios-mods released a modded bios that had fan control and temp options in it that helped quite a bit
also, this damn trackpad is clicking all over the place while i'm trying to type this, it's an awesome pad but the palm sense thing needs some work.. first world problems though.. -
Uploading a video of the screen with varying viewing angles now.
trackpad seems fine but... a bit off, this made it MUCH better.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/563791-definitive-guide-envy-trackpad.html
use that and follow the settings an things should flow much smoother -
Link us when you're done uploading it. Also, could you let us know what your impressions of it are? Good points/bad points?
-
well, i found an option in the bios under system management called "fan always on" so i set that to off, and when i booted into windows, it was nice and quiet.
the core temps were all around 40 but after about 30 seconds of the fan being off, then cores all went up to about 50 degrees and now the fans are back on again, and once it gets back down to about 38 degrees, fans go off again. this is almost more annoying than having the fans on full blast ahaha
* update, i actually started messing around with the catalyst control center, and chose an option to put google chrome into a power saving mode rather than a high performance, my cores all seem to be hovering around 42-44 now without the fan spinning all the time. i guess we'll all have to test out what settings are best for all of us. the fans are a little more tolerable now -
not sure if anyone posted this confirmation earlier, but the clocks for the 7690m do in fact match the 6750m @ 600MHz
-
shot this on my phone, here is the link.
20111222 001212 - YouTube
my phone picks up a bit too much background audio, and I have a major case of mr shakey cam, but you get some idea of the viewing angles.
I will upload a better video later on with greater range of motion and a comparison to my old 13" notebooks screen for some perspective.
As for thoughts, I like the screen, very clear and it has good color as far as I can tell. It is not the brightest screen I have seen, or the sharpest, but it is good. -
Those are some pretty great viewing angles. I'm impressed.
Now I just need to wait for mine to arrive. Oh the horror.
EDIT: I just noticed the two lights on the left side of the screen on the bezel. I believe those are for the proximity sensor for the backlighting on the keyboard, yes? Do those ever turn off? Looks like it could get pretty annoying. -
another point, the speakers on this notebook ARE quite good. Are they ultra high fidelity? not at all, but they get very loud, loud enough you will probably not want them all the way up. This should be useful for crap recordings of video/audio I need to hear but usually require bat organs to make out.
-
Holy Christ, superb screen you have there tybert7. Is that the full 1080p panel?
-
Hello, new Envy 15'6 owners!
Please give Ur comments about the laptop - interested in screen and touchpad:
- screen: IPS or TN? If IPS:
-- colors
-- brightness
-- angles
-- response time?
Can be display compared to any Apple MacBook
IPS display?
If TN display: can it be compared to Sony Full HD F-model displays?
Touchpad:
- if holding a thumb or another finger on any of the mouse keys, so are there again any funky movements with cursors or something?
Thanks!
PS: How is overall expression?
BTW, ENVY 17 is TN comparable to IPS display? -
So does this mean it's a straight rebadge, no tweaks?
-
People! What the he'll is that 1/3 price off?!
Please! -
As i wrote earlier on my Envy 17 i am pleased with the performance, design and functionality but the rightside fan can be a little annoying. It's not the decibel level that annoys me but the high frequency whine get on my nerves.
I had other transport damages on my envy 17 so it's possible the whine is exclusive to my envy 17 but if other envy 17 owners has the same whine then i guess HP forget rule 101 about cooling fans that says high frequency whine with low decibel level is much worse that than a low frequency breeze at higher decibel levels.
If i get the time i will try a clean install and see if it helps. -
1/3 = 33,3%
-
Yep. Exactly, sir! But how to get it work for U?
-
I received my Envy 17 yesterday (preconfigured Swedish model 3010eo, with 1080p display). I'm quite happy with it - display is really good and so is build quality - but unfortunately I share Stefans experience when it comes to the fan. For me it's not so much a high pitched whine but the fan is constantly active and clearly audible. I was hoping the laptop development had gone further than this. When it comes to sound emission there's not really any difference between this and my old Dell Inspiron. Perhaps it's possible to change something in Bios to set the fans to a less active level?
-
Nice. This is the exact model i ordered. i have some questions for you, Mike.
How long was the delivery time!
Is the screen glossy?
if you in BIOS set fan-aalways-on to false. is there any difference if fan noise, if you in windows, toggle the graphics card, on /off? -
I ordered mine on December 15 and it was delivered yesterday. The screen is glossy but I haven't noticed any disturbing reflections so far. Probably because it's so bright.
I changed the fan setting in BIOS but it didn't change a thing. The fan is still running constantly. Turning off the dedicated GPU didn't affect anything either.
it's not terribly annoying, I just wish it would run a bit more silent. With the CPU cores at 45 C, I don't see the point in so much fan activity. Perhaps HP are so scared of heat issues that they're overcompensating this time. -
Anyone know a direct contact who can refund shipping charges? My Envy isn't getting here in the 2-day window and free ship orders are Bering delivered all over the place. Also need to see about getting a refund for separate shipping charges for warranties that were shipped two weeks ago with 2-day shipping needlessly.
-
wierd. im in issaquah wa, 20 mins due east of seattle. my 15 went from anchorage, ak to oakland and back up to seattle. out for delivery today.
-
Mine seems like it will be doing similar. Hopefully it will be delivered before 4 or so today, so I can make it across the border to Sumas to pick it up.
-
For the people who don't like the two red lights (which are fairly annoying at times), in the HP menu in the start menu, there's a proximity sensor program and there's an option to turn it off. the only difference with it off is your backlight on the keyboard doesn't "greet" you... but who cares, it's either on or off this way and i'm okay with that
-
looks like my 17 3D is coming today. sucks because no one will be home...
-
So I'm assuming the GPU is can't be upgraded and is embedded on the mobo?
Reason I chose the Envy 17 over the 15 is because of the lack of numeric pad and bluray drive on the 15. I love watching my 3D movies on my laptop from time to time. I don't want to carry a portable bluray drive around, so no thanks for that. And I feel like I traded a 3D screen for an IPS screen. Some people don't care about 3D, but I like to have it. It's a nice addition, specially when watching BluRay 3D movies, and looking at the pics taken with my EVO 3D. It's fun. -
Thanks for your reply, HenrikBalsnes. This is interesting news, although I agree with you that Ivy Bridge within Q1 2012 seems-or should be-improbable. But I don't understand why the 15" version will not be appearing. Somehow I get the feeling that the rest of Europe will get the same treatment as well, the UK already has only the 17" version listed, but no mention of the 15"...
-
This is the misconception that will never go away. The Apple Macbook Pros do NOT have IPS displays. No apple laptop has (or ever had AFAIK) an IPS display. Instead they use very high quality TN panels. If the 15 really does have a decent IPS, it should exceed the quality of the TN displays on the macbook pros.
-
There should be a code floating around these last couple of pages.
-
The current code is NBT3886. 30% off and is valid until Dec 29th (I think)...
-
That now makes at least two Fedex departures from Anchorage that was not present on the search results query taken yesterday evening. Maybe FlightAware's search function isn't so accurate and complete after all
-
I just talked to a hp sales rep and she said it was good up to the 28th. So it sounds like the code is good up to the 28th, including the 28th, and will no longer work on the 29th. I'll probably order on the 27th to be safe though.
-
What a tease. Both my 15 and 17 3D landed in Denver this morning but I don't think Fedex is going to deliver in 10 inches of snow...
-
Hi there,
I found this on the Verge, seems to lend some credibility to the new Envy 14's.

Cheers! -
Suprised no one has done an unboxing video yet

Turns out that yours was on the Anchorage to Oakland flight that didn't show up on the FlightAware search until much later in the evening even though it departed almost the same time as the Indy flight. There was also another flight to Newark, NJ that wasn't initially reported either. All three (Indy, Oakland, Newark) were the huge MD-11 Jumbo Jets too.
Looks like mine did sit in Indy until after 4:00AM and then flew on a DC-10 and landed in D/FW just before 6:00AM, where it now sits at the "Dallas TX destination sort facility". That usually means one more day's wait, because if a Fedex package isn't "On the truck for delivery" out of the Wichita Falls Fedex office by 8:00AM (2.5 hour drive from D/FW), it ain't gonna be showing up here on that day. -
Bummer dude. I just looked at your weather forecast and it says heavy snow all day there until evening. Having new toys to play with while snowed-in sure would've been a better way to pass the day, eh?
-
Mines scheduled to be delivered at 10:30AM EST. and it's now 10:16AM... and it's still sitting in Fedex sort facility since 8:24AM (which is only 1-2 towns away). I am gonna be driving there soon to raise hell lol
edit: soon as it past 10:30AM it was all of a sudden out for delivery and had left at 8:30AM... but now my 10:30AM scheduled delivery time is gone. bet I have to wait until 7PM now. -
Very interested in someone comparing the 15" IPS with the 17" display. Its about the only thing holding me back from ordering... dunno if the IPS + lighter size is worth sacrificing blu-ray for yet...
-
what other laptop displays have you seen that are brighter? my 14 is the brightest I've ever seen...
the video you posted shows some sweet viewing angles, thanks for it! -
Looks like ceiling lights reflecting off the bezel. Look closelier.
-
Weird... people are anxious enough to track the flights of the package but not many (or any?) pictures or videos.
-
Maybe spoke too soon... status just changed to "At local Fedex facility - Wichita Falls". Still doesn't mean they'll put them on a truck today since Est Delivery is still listed as tomorrow at 10:30AM.
-
Well I must wonder where did all of those promised video, picture and reviews go? Everyone was going to contribute something, but now it seems they got their units and off they went.... So will someone please come forth and present us with a nice video Unboxing and review......
Also, regarding the fans, personally, I would rather have a little fan noise than Heat issues! Now I'm not talking about the exception (like a whining noise), but rather the fact that they are just on. Remember, you now have 2 instead of the 1 in the 2nd gens..
Also, where in the CCC program, did you find an entry for the "Google Chrome" setting option? Which version of CCC are you using? Since it is not in the 6850 GPU settings, it must be something new for the new GPU's... -
Mine is Out For Delivery, the Envy 17 3D, Central Illinois area, also my cousin lives close by has his Envy 17 non-3D out for delivery also
-
Probably because as soon as they get the box opened, they're far too pre-occupied and mesmerized to do anything else but play with their new toys.
I plan on taking pictures of mine. Don't know when I'll get around to posting them online though, LOL! -
change anxious to obsessed, and you got it lol
-
Mine is on the truck for delivery as of two hours ago, I have a Canon 60D so I plan on doing an unboxing and overview video for youtube.
