I've heard nothing to imply that the Envy 15's processors are soldered - that's not something you find in decent laptops much these days.

However, there is no mobile SB chipset that is compatible with mobile Ivy Bridge, so you're out of luck whether or not the processor is soldered in.

    And PaKii94 - multi-quote is your friend.

    I got a deep dark secret, I dunno how to use multi-quote :( :(

nvm just tried it and figured it out LOL

Envy 15 current gen processors are NOT soldered on. Zif socket just like most other laptops.

We are still guessing as to the exact release date but it should be some time in early june possibly june 4-12 around HP discover 2012 or the new product catalog but it might be out sooner then that in singapore/indonesia region since it seems like its being advertised in asia/pacific region stores

That sucks you can't get the dv6. I've been following this thread just as diligently as i know you have for the past several weeks. I was set on the envy for my college laptop, but with my birthday rolling around last week I decided just to spring for the quickship dv6. Had everything I needed save for a SSD and maybe a faster processor. But it's more than I expected I would definitely recommend it. Given that the envy is the sleek, unibody, sexy model, I didn't expect much from the design point of view. But I was wrong, this thing doesn't look like the "high performance clunker" that every single gaming laptop resembles. It is contained in a highly stylish case. It was my plan, just as yours, to return for an ivy bridge envy when it came out, but now i am unsure. I am perfectly content with everything about this laptop. The fact that the 2gb 650m will equal or outperform the 7750m is the biggest factor for me. I play FIFA 12 on maxed settings, nba 2k12 on maxed settings, and skyrim and battlefield both on high settings down the board. Second of all the dv6 does get quite hot while gaming so the slim unibody factor makes me skeptical, even though I hear the envy cooling system is superior. And third of all the only tangible differences in the laptops will be the form factor and price; the internal hardware specs are basically the same. Not to mention the current quickship pavillions come with top of the line specs (no need to customize unless you want better than a 3610). So there you have it. After reading through 50 pages over the course of a few weeks I have finally made an account to give my .02

16gb RAM for $77.. Crazy cheap.

I hope HP will give their employees enough of a break not to introduce this Monday and let them take Memorial Day off. :)

Sticking around for more info though. This is an appealing laptop.

people in the owner's thread have some complaints which i could live with (cause ik the envy will have it) but i just like the looks of the envy better. Also, I got a budget of 1.5k (school given) so I wanna take full advantage of it... I would get a mac but i hate osx i know i could boot win7 on there but its also crazy expensive haha. the envy is the 2nd best. the new dell xps 15 looks pretty slick also

It's a pain in the butt, since you have to remove a whole ton of screws to get to where you can actually replace the CPU, but it's not difficult per se - once you get the machine open it's just a matter of dropping the new one in and repasting for the most part.

GPUs are typically not upgradeable, though, and I don't think any Envys are exceptions to the rule.

not gonna lie... i highly doubt that the mbp will dissappoint, its going to be a beautiful machine. the specs will prolly tie with envy (or envy will have a slight edge) but like always.... mac will prolly be thinner but run hotter. it will ahve less quality problems and faults. but it will have like a +$1k price compared to the envy.... if you got the money i would prolly go for mbp. but since i hate osx, and i dont got that much money (only 1.5k) i go envy :p

its going to be interesting if mbp turns out to have "retina display" with fhd+ res... i bet other companies will be in hot pursuit next year but unfortunately it will be too late :( maybe if i hit the lottery next year/have the money (lottery probably more likely cause ima be a college student lol ;) ) ill upgrade to a high res envy :p

I bet they will just scale up the icons and stuffs. Otherwise, "true retina" + rumored thinner body = less battery life vs. larger battery to compensate like the iPad 3. And as far as we know, the IB CPUs (regardless of quad or dual) won't increase the battery time significantly.
Apple fanboys:"omg my laptop is retina ready"..

to all of those that are wondering the price...

    New Products - Aquila Technology

    the envy 14 spectre is $2,067.12 (#419)

similarly priced envy 14 spectre in the hp shop is $1,399.99 (I think this is the closest configuration as described in the link description... this is late at night so i might have missed something)

    so a 47.65% markup

the new envy iis $2,406.66 (#152)

getting rid of the 47.65% markup we get ~$1260

for the price of a similarly configured envy 15

the envy 17 right now is $150 more than the 15

    so ~$1410 for envy 17

the 3d 17 is about $350 more than the 17

    so ~1760 for the envy 17 3d.

remember this is just speculation (mine) and this is the price i would estimate without the coupons of a similarly configured laptop

I agree that the Dell looks good. Do you know if they ever fixed the power cord falling out of the xps yet? Last time I looked at the xps series (a few months ago) the design had not changed and the darn thing would keep falling out every time you breathed on it after you owned it for a few months. There were a lot of "hack" fixes but again if you pay that much $ you shouldn't have to fix anyting.

Remember that the new MBP won't carry a Optical drive, therefore leaving space for a considerably bigger battery and also for better battery life.

Not an Apple fanboy, but seriously considering one cause in Chile no other brand has the same (or really close) prices in the US as over here. The HP Envy 15 is around US$2000 with the 768p display

In the same boat as you man. Frankly, if HP don't get the Ivy Bridge envy out before WWDC and they finally get a release date/specs up for the MBP 2012, Hp will have lost one of the two things they had going for them: availability and price. I sure as hell am not going to mind paying the Apple premium if they get it out before the envy, as it'll probably ship faster (assuming I don't customize it at all) and the OS, durability, and resale value are all things Apple has going for it. Then again, seems like gaming will be a pain in the on a MBP just because of having to use bootcamp, but if the thing ships with SSD standard, (or atleast an SSD boot drive), it shouldn't take too long at all to boot into Windows and back.

Not if you plan to run Win7/8 as they don't put out proper drivers for the graphic switching because they wan't to push their own pos OS. You won't get much battery life in Windows. The touch pad also doesn't work as smoothly under windows.

They could fix it easily but they don't meaning they wont ever get my money.

In regards to the switchable graphics issue this isn't really a big deal for me as I'll only be going into Windows to game, so I'll be plugged in and battery life won't be a concern. To be frank I don't see why anyone would want run exclusively Windows 7 on a Macbook Pro, as IMO OS X is fine for everything that isn't Windows exclusive-- by my count games and the few applications that still don't support Macs nowadays.

I have been a windows user for my entire life. But when I switched to OSX 10 months ago, I had an easy task ahead, just looked at some videos for more advanced things that I needed, and bam quite easy.

Lion is one of the best OS that I have ever tried, the interface is easy and quite intuitive for people that have used pcs and phones. I do prefer innovative designs when it comes to the interface that Im using, windows has been stuck on the same thing since 95, thus its easy to learn the new tricks that comes with each new revision.

You should try linux as well, quite enjoyable to use, however still there are people that think that typing command lines = power to the user, and sometimes they are still needed here and there for some advanced functions (it does make the work easier if you know what you are doing), however the graphics interface presented to the user and the customization options that it comes makes it one hell of a powerful tool.

The super old envy 15-1XXX model from 2009 with 5830m GPU already runs just about any game at 1080p, so I imagine the 32XX model with AMD 7750m is going to knock it out of the park.

So I suppose we aren't seeing a new Envy yet because they don't want to ship exclusively with Ivy Birdge Quad-Core processors? Guess we'll just have to wait till the second wave of Ivy Bridge launches yet another week from now...

I don't like the separate menu bar on the top for every program and the fact that closing a program doesn't exit it.

They already have the Pavilions for that purpose. Will they refresh the Envy twice in a year? If they refresh it now, they will have to refresh it again in just a few months time. And the Win 8 refresh may include touchscreens or enhanced trackpads to take advantage of the emphasis on touch. So that will be a pretty big refresh.

yeah same. i feel as if its more complicated. there are some features that I believe windows should get (better widgets, different desktops, easier search options) but maybe thats my bias

this isnt an asthetics refresh, its only ivy+gcn difference... maybe a new screen model to avoid the red-orange issue

most once a year refreshes are more of tweaking the looks (making it slimmer, "prettier" etc)
