    Real quick thoughts -

    Keyboard - solid.
Trackpad - eh. I'm finding alot of missed clicks and such with the buttons. Using a wired mouse at the moment.
Display - I'm an amateur photographer and this display is MILES ahead of my 23" TN desktop display, almost to the point where I'm seriously considering using this as my main pc (bought it originally as a beefy travel laptop). As far as the reds go, I checked places such as cnn and netflix as mentioned by other people, and they appear red to me. It does seem to a very bright red at times, almost veering into "maybe" orange at times, but definitely red. Violets seem to be normal looking to me also.
Heat - This isnt' getting very hot at all, and fairly quiet. I haven't really pushed it yet, but I've played a few hours of Diablo 3, and the fan kicked up to the 3rd level which still really isn't very loud at all. After all that time, looking at HWMonitor the CPU maxed out at 70c and video card at 65c. I'm impressed.
Sound - definitely miles ahead of most laptop speakers. I'm a semi-audiophile so I'll be hooking my good headphones up soon and seeing how the integrated audio does.
Build Quality - for the most part, perfect. The bottom panel in the front is loose, I'm not sure if they didn't tighten the screw all the way or what, I'll be looking at that soon.
Gaming - I've only tried D3 so far. Have not attempted to OC or anything. In Inferno Act 1, getting murdered by elites, I'm pulling anywhere from 30 to 40 fps at 1920x1080, sometimes hitting 50. Not bad at all. I have shadows off, that seemed to make it chug a bit.

One thing I'm kicking myself over is I ordered the i5, thinking it was a quad core. Not sure if I'm going to return this yet and get the i7, but so far for what I do, it's holding up. Color me impressed so far.

Ok guys just got home from work and opened up the box. Gotta say this, the design looks amazing. The screen is incredibly beautiful, one of the best I've ever seen, and red looks red without a doubt (checked CNN and also searched "red" under google images). Uniform brightness, great viewing angles and everything is very sharp (no jaggy edges on anything). The keyboard is different but not in a bad way. It has a good touch to it and the keys arent squeeky or anything.

    NOW FOR THE BAD:
-The trackpad is absolutely atrocious. While two finger scrolling is pretty good for a laptop PC, everything else is miserable. The trackpad is not smooth on your finger, oftentimes your finger will catch on the trackpad while moving the cursor around. Dragging and dropping is terrible, lots of clicks are missed, the cursor tends to jump around sometimes. It requires way too much effort to click, either the button or on the trackpad itself, and so you are forced to do one-finger tapping for left-button clicking.

-Build quality: As others has noticed the first thing that jumped out to me was the front panel on the bottom of the laptop (where the battery is housed). It is loose, not that it will fall off, but you can slide it a bit while it is still in the locked position. Minor annoyance as it is still stable in frame.

I notice a few knicks around the edge of the metallic frame, and also one area where there was a slight bend in the metal at a USB port, though it does not affect the port itself.

Since the frame is not unibody, there are areas where you can see things dont perfectly fit together, you only really notice it if you are examining everything really closely though.

    LASTLY HERE COMES MY DEALBREAKER:
-I opened up the lid, boy what a pretty screen...except that the acrylic screen (not the panel itself but the plastic in front of the panel) IS NOT PROPERLY ATTACHED TO THE FRAME OF THE LAPTOP. Around the HP logo the plastic bulges out, enough that it scrapes the frame when opening/closing the laptop. On the upper right edge and corner the plastic is not adhered to the frame AT ALL, it hangs out about 1/3rd of a centimeter from the frame. I tried pushing it back into the frame but theres nothing to catch it and it just bulges right back out.

LASTLY... One of the hinges is not properly attached to the screen/lid. It is supposed to be flush against it, but instead theres a good 1/3rd of a centimeter in space between the hinge shell and the screen. When the lid is shut the hinge bulges out the back a bit, clearly it was not properly attached.

I really love everything about this laptop except the track pad and the build quality flaw that I received. I will call HP and demand a new laptop. I think im justified in this. Even if a tech can come out and push the screen into the frame (which I dont want to do on my own in fear of damaging the panel) he definitely cant fix the messed up hinge.

If I received a new one without these flaws I'd say this laptop is the best 15.6" laptop on the market despite its terrible trackpad. We'll see how it holds up to the soon to be released L521X. In terms of build quality it obviously cant hold a candle to the Macbook Pro. I saw the retina screen and it also looks incredible. The only thing preventing me from going MBP is the Mac OS.

I had heard of dual boot. I wouldn't be into Parallels, running windows in a windowed mode. So through bootcamp I can actually turn the MBP into a PC? The build quality, design and specs of the MBP is right up my alley, the only hitch was being able to solely use windows without any hitches/bugs.

I processed an exchange order, somehow got charged 75$ because the 33% coupon was only "one time use". I could hardly understand the person I was speaking to and she could hardly understand what I was saying either, she also had the microphone too close to her mouth. I finished up the conversation and am going to file a report electronically so I don't lose my temper speaking to the customer service rep. I don't normally nitpick but this was upsetting to receive a new-in-box product that clearly was not QC'd. Anyone who opened the lid should have noticed the screen was not attached to the frame.

You can install windows on the MBP... -_- same way you can install hackintosh on Envy.
The biggest reason one shouldn't buy the MBP is the price :O

Well, my attempt at a full reinstall of Windows failed epicly. It seems that after the reinstall the OS wouldn't even recognize the ethernet port, so I couldn't connect to the internet to download the drivers... Oops...

Good thing I spent all afternoon making a set of recovery disks. :)

I guess I will just get rid of the bloatware by hand...

Hi everyone, I've been reading the Envy threads for a while, and decided to jump in, since I'm currently waiting for my Envy 17 Ivy Bridge.

Just wanted to let you guys know that my only concern with HP is their quality control. I purchased the Envy 15-3040nr Sandy Bridge about a month ago, and my only comment about the red/orange issue is that if you're coming from a laptop that didn't have that issue, it will be noticeable in your Envy 15. I returned that unit recently because I had issues with the panel, i.e. some dirt stuck behind the transparent screen that can't be wiped off unless you remove the panel.

I'm currently on a similar replacement unit (Envy 15-3040nr SB) while awaiting for my Envy 17 IB to be delivered. I had the privilege to compare two units of the exact same model for a couple of hours, and yet there are some noticeable differences between the two. Here are the main differences:

    1. Both units had the red/orange issue, but it was more obvious on the first unit, i.e. more orange on the first, more red on the second.

    2. The color white on the first unit was pure white, but more yellowish for the second (no idea why - I've already adjusted the brightness).

    3. Vibration level was much higher on the second unit, but relatively zero on the first unit.

There are some other issues, e.g. dents here and there, but these are the main differences. So, yeah. Just wanted to point out that even though the model is exactly the same, the screen issue may be more severe in some units than others.

My Envy 17 is scheduled to ship tomorrow, but of course, I have a strong feeling that it's delayed, just like the others. Oh well, I'll keep you guy updated.

there are many trackpad fixes and make sure u update the driver first that makes it workable. some even started liking it :p. Usually there aren't that many qc issues on an envy. I think u just got a bad one. i would just ask for an exchange. Could you look up ur panel info? but yeah obv its gonna have qc issues cause its HP  but shouldnt be that much.

5-7 usually takes 4 to 5 depending on location. 2 day is 2

yeah i agree but also cause i dont really like osx

Stuff like this irks me GREATLY, considering this is my 3rd envy, and HP seems to continue to not give a flying S*** about their top of the line laptops. Anyone with "regular" HP laptops have these issues too? Absolutely uncalled for on HPs part to not have addressed this by now.

ordered 6/4, was supposed to be shipped yesterday and i just got delay notice saying not shipping until 6/26/2012 -.- do not understand the reason for this delay, while i did order when the site was screwy i did order things that are still available for customization. so they don't even have the parts for items they are still selling? lame.

I can't believe they didn't fix the USB dent... you can fix that if you just wiggle something behind it to pull it out. It doesn't take much pressure.

Next to my envy 14 radiance. First off the radiance is much brighter. There is definitely a hue difference in the reds but I wouldn't say it's orange. When I get to a desktop I'll type up more impressions but maybe not till tomorrow as I've got some late night work to do.

not much has changed from the sandy-bridge envy. minus the interesting fact that the screen MIGHT be a different panel. there are plenty of videos detailing the 15 otherwise.

i'll be going into detail once i get a reliable screen to compare it against. unfortunately there's no way to get the panel number unless i disassemble the thing and i'm not that curious yet.

initially though, the laptop is great. mine doens't seem to have any build quality issues. the screen is sharp and pleasant to look at. reds look fine to me when i'm not comparing it to something else, but we'll see once i get a good source.

trackpad seems decent too. or maybe i'm just used to finicky trackpads from my envy 14.

Just an update. I was a little scathing on the trackpad, it was a kneejerk reaction and I was a bit irate at the poor QC on my laptop. After playing around with it, it seems not as bad as initially thought. I still dont like how hard you have to click, but tracking around on the pad isnt so bad.

I called HP about the screen and hinge issue. The first guy I talked to (from America) was very helpful and nice, he seemed dismayed that they would have delivered something that "seems like they just didnt finish assembling the unit". He then had to transfer me to the exchange/refund department, which unfortunately was an incoherent, microphone too close to the mouth, outsourced phone operator (probably in India) who could hardly form sentences. Not to be rude but its really hard to understand such a person let alone have them understand you. Of course her name was "Victoria".

Victoria gave me three options. Return for a refund, exchange for a new laptop, or purchase a new laptop and return the damaged one for a refund. I laughed at the idea of paying twice for one laptop and waiting 4 weeks before being refunded (I would have to purchase the new one, wait for it to arrive, then return the first one). I told Victoria to put me in for an exchange. She then told me that the 33% off coupon was a "ONE TIME USE" coupon and that she could only price match to 30% or so, and would have to charge me the 75$ difference. I grew pretty perturbed at this, and her inability to understand how ridiculous that seemed, took the charge and set up the exchange just to end the phone call. I'm going to send an electronic report on it and ask that an English speaking supervisor call me back.

I then decided to try and fix it myself, since I was exchanging it anyways and didnt need to care about damaging anything. I managed to pop the screen into place, I think the panel behind it isnt damaged, but the hinge is still unfixable. It seems like its mostly aesthetic as the hinge can move just fine, it just is out of place and not flush against the screen/lid.

So the question is, do I roll the dice with an exchange and risk getting something even worse, or just stick with the defective hinge? It seems nitpicky but come on I just paid almost two grand for this after tax/warranty.

    Thanks for letting me rant.

Ugghhh gonna call them tomorrow, I want my freaking envy, have yet to receive an email about delay and it's been a day past my Date suppose to ship.
I'm pretty pissed... Now when can I expect my envy

Hearing about poor jobs of building them makes me untrust Hp on their quality. Every Envy should be the same, built perfect I hear so many models that are different from each other. This is why apple is superior... Why can't HP step it up..

Wait. They messed up your laptop and now they are going to charge you more money in order for you to get what you should have got the first time?

I would be furrious they should be giving you money because they messed up what should be a premium laptop. If nothing else they should at least do it for free.

They should be apologizing and exchange for free as fast as they could. I'm pissed for you just reading this... I'm sorry to hear bro...

haha try the tweaks and stuff I htink ull like it much better. also for the exchange thing. I would have word for word said "You are an incompetent fool" and would have hung up
and recalled someone. Thats rediculous to charge someone for an exchange... maybe if u were getting the new order.... I would call the return people up again, ask to speak to a manager (or someone in america) and then ask them is going on.

the envy has the chance to be the perfect multimedia laptop if HP can get its game together but it keeps on letting us down :(

I ordered my new Envy 15t on June 4th (yes, when the HP web page was all goofy) and it was due to ship yesterday. I got my Delay Notification yesterday and I think it was a sign from God. I get the impression that HP-Shanghai is in turmoil. They are trying to transition to a new generation of CPU's, GPU's, HDD's and IPS displays, all while trying to deal with a growing backlog and a host of disgruntled customers. This might be affecting Quality Control. So...I went on HP chat and cancelled my order. They told me I had a 50% chance that the cancellation would "take" before the Envy shipped so I might still get it some sunny day. I would prefer to wait until the dust settles on this current refreshing of the Envy and re-order when things have calmed down a bit. Sure, I would like to have my new laptop but it's not the Ark of the Covenent...I can wait. Besides, I still an excellent dv6t to keep me company.

Yea guys its pretty bunk huh? I'm more dissapointed in the lack of customer service. I mean I just gave up because it was impossible trying to understand her. At least I got something ON PAPER as having happened so now I can get in touch with an American supervisor, get the 75$ charge fixed, and get some proper customer service. Everything else is really superb here except this one hiccup. I'm coming from two high end Dells, an XPS and a Studio XPS 1640 over the past 5 years and both have failed within 2.5 years on me, its time to get a laptop that is good out of the box and that lasts. The 1640 was honestly a perfect laptop, design, specs, RBGLED screen (one of the first 1080p's out there) but it had horrendous throttling issues, and I often measured the CPU on speedfan at going to 90, 100, 100+ degrees I could honestly scramble eggs on it. If I can't get this XPS stuff worked out I might have to do the unthinkable and jump ship to MBP just for the build quality, money is no object I have the disposable income I just cant stand Apple despite their pretty products.

I have no faith in Dell to come out with the XPS15 L521x and have it beat the specs/screen of the Envy. I've already read that the top end GPU would be a 640M, no IPS or RGBLED screen. Its almost like they are going backwards on their screen tech lately and compensating for it by covering it in sleek gorilla glass. ***EDIT: These are only rumoured specs, for some reason Dell won't announce the release date, announcement date, or any confirmation of pictures/specs. They are behind the 8-ball and are acting like keeping it a secret will do anything but hurt them.

I second this. Are you buying another one? No. You're exchanging it. You aren't needing to USE a coupon again so one time use doesn't apply. You already paid for a perfect laptop and you didn't get one.

I think HP outsources customer service for this reason (as well as the cheaper wages they have to pay, of course. Customers get fed up and just give in when they are wronged because they can't deal with a non-English speaking person any longer.

my camera is lent out to family and my phone can't quite capture it, but i'd say it's far more noticeable than the red difference. this is comparing it to the envy 14 radiance though - possibly an overly vibrant source?

I have a question those who alreay have the machine. In the spec, envy 15 supposes to have VGA port.
    1GB Radeon(TM) HD 7750M GDDR5 Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
But I didn't see the port in any review for the earlier version. Do we have the VGA port for the updated envy 15? Thanks.

Idk I like this guy, seems pretty chill... Plus he shows the packaging which is something I care about since I already know/seen so much about the computer itself...
HP Envy 15 Series (Early 2012) Unboxing HD - YouTube
