ENVY line is supposed to match and better the Macbook Pro... Maybe HP is waiting for Apple to show its hand first?

Then you can wait just a while longer... for a 20-50% jump in GPU performance depending... April 29 for the DV6/7, but allow some shipping time from factory...

Ok. I have an envy 15. The orange red issue is total bull because I bought this laptop for design. and Reds don't show properly, so what the ($*@.

anyway. My "Case Manager" isn't helping me much. He offers that I return it and they fix the screen (although that hasn't worked last time). Idk if it's too late to return the unit, as well. And how likely is it that an envy 15 with such specs will be released soon and would cost around the same price range? I paid 1120 for mine to be shipped. this is with an i7 and an upgraded* screen.

    Enlighten me. I'm pissed.

How long have you had this unit? Use it to 18-20 days and arrange for a return if you are still within 21 days. *Varies by region.

You have sent it in once, so it means you don't have enough cases to persuade them to do an upgrade at all (if the new E15 comes out).

If you have to have HP, I would wait. The 7690M isnt a bad Mid-range part at all.. but there will be some higher end parts out soon enough... Worth the wait IMO.

One thing's for sure. They need to keep up with the Jones at Cupertino and get rid of the DVD drive. That'll bring this notebook closer to being able to hold a higher-end Kepler GPU.

Doesn't sound so crazy when external DVD and blu-ray drives are cheap today!

You could fit some monster cooling.. or even an MXM slot in the optical bay of the machine and keep the same form factor.

I use the optical drive all the time and would not have purchased the unit w/o it having one.
Though an option to toss an SSD or another bank of ports or something (instead of an optical drive) would be cool.

I for one would love to see them offer a envy 15 without the dvd drive... or atleast add a msata.

It would be awesome if they released the current envy for those who wanted the built in optical drive and with the specs of the title along with another envy without the optical drive, another HD bay, and a 7850m for those who want more power with the same portability.. I can't remember the last time i used my cd drive when on the go and would rather just have a external drive at my house.

Indeed. Apple wants to concentrate on super thin and light. Cool. Let them. A lot of people still need major major CPU and GPU processing power for their jobs. And of course, you have us gamers. :p HP can just keep the thickness at 1" flat and work on designing a super good cooling system that supports high end graphics.

And no, they wouldn't be abandoning the thin/light market. They can choose to continue selling Ultrabooks as people who want a thinner form factor and lighter weight will still buy them. An ODDless Envy 15 is for those of us who don't want or need a desktop but portable power. This is 2012. Kepler and Ivy Bridge are really emphasizing power efficiency. It only makes sense for HP to put some R&D into taking advantage of these technologies to bring out a 1" thick notebook computing solution that's still portable but able to churn out performance at the $1,000 price point. I'll gladly pay the price.

My Envy 14 from 2010 provides a glimpse into this direction. As with normal thin/light notebooks, I can use it for taking notes and watching movies on a sweet radiance display. But there's also something really awesome about being able to meet up with my buddies for an SC2 match using a notebook that isn't a 17" hulkey notebook. Imagine the potential they'd unlock if they were to take the current Envy 15's chassis, remove the ODD, and redesign the cooling system to accommodate more powerful parts and the space available for an additional fan.

That would be a waste of valuable engineering resources. Why spend all that time and money on a different version when you could just buy in bulk a bunch of DVD or blu-ray drives. From a business standpoint, that's bound to bleed cash.

The older Envy 15 models without ODD are thinner and lighter than the Envy 14s.

Did the new 2012 Envy 15's end up getting bulky?

6lbs something apparently. The first gen 15" weight was very ideal despite the battery life with the 6 cells

Now there's untapped potential. But even at 6lbs, I consider the Envy 15 quite a nice machine especially with a high-def IPS display to boot.

2nd gen Envy 15 was 5.25lbs with no ODD. Pretty terrible battery though unless you added the slice, which made it much heavier.

Did I see correctly that the model is likely out this summer?

There's currently a 33% off coupon for the Envy 15 (expires in four days) that is really tempting. Seeing as the reboot's main hardware upgrade is for the GPU, and I do game lightly (some Battlefield 3, Starcraft, etc), is it worth dishing out an extra $500+ bucks for the new model, or should I just go with the current?

There's very little information about the upcoming Envy. And by little I mean microscopic little.

I think we'll just have to wait until after the new Pavilions are out the door and have been in the market for at least a few weeks before we hear even whispers of information about the Ivy Bridge Envy....

I feel yah on the trackpad....

I honestly don't know what magic Apple is doing or what super technology that they possess that apparently Microsoft and HP don't have but all I want is for a the stupid trackpad to be responsive and BE USEFULL.

I mean I don't think its really too much to ask.

Significant increase in battery life would be good as well.

After some tweaking, the 2nd gen envy trackpad was perfect. I was used to the MBP trackpad before I got it, so it took a bit of adjusting, but after a while I came to prefer it more.

The main thing is that you need to enable Momentum Glide, Coasting for 2-finger scroll, and a tap zone in the top right corner for right-click. After that it's golden.

It doesn't compare. If I had to guess, based on how nvidia's new mid-end cards perform, it would be in the area of the GTX 460M/560M/ Radeon 5870M (more or less), which are outperformed by the 6990M by well over 50% I think.

Judging from previous ENVY models, there is likely no way to upgrade graphics. This is not exclusive to ENVY line though.

Anyone know if they will be making a Envy style gaming series? Heck all they would have to do is upgrade the GPU some better airflow. They could remove the ODD to make room, if they did they would have a real goldmine! I mean who would not want a powerful laptop that looks like a macbook :p

    Here;

    HP Executive Team: CEO email

Yeah.. in a nutshell. I don't see HP building anything faster than a 660M level part. If anything, they will probably put a 640M or maybe something in the 77xx lineup in there.

well i messaged them.... I don't think they really take the time to read the letters (like every corp) but maybe this one will.

Actually, they usually follow the dv6/dv7 series dont they? so it will probably be gt 630m+650m equivalent. gtx 660m would be a step up :D

    Directly.. No.

However, most company execs are interested in what people want, especially if it is demand for a new product. They may not be able to do anything about it immediately, but it could shape direction and policy going forward.

The more people that ask nicely for a new product or feature, the of a "bug" is in their ear that there is a market for it.
