Actually you're probably good with the 6GB...it'll come with a stick of 4 and a stick of 2; so just buy another stick of 4GB for $20-$25 and you're all set

I also got 6GB 1600 Mhz. If I remember when I jumped in on the deal (6/5) 8GB 1333Mhz was $20 more, and I didn't want to get slower RAM. I think 8GB 1600Mhz was $60 more. I figured that for the same cost as the $60 upgrade, you could swap out the 2GB stick and replace with an 8GB stick(~$60 on newegg) to get up to 12GB. That's what I plan to do, although I will wait to see if I'm putting a lot of stress on the RAM before doing so. I'm also waiting for a decent deal on a sizeable SSD drive (at least 256GB).

I can confirm that dark blues appear "washed out" (like if you bought a brand new Polo Shirt, after a few months of washes and being in the sun the color is still blue just...faded).

I compared it to 2 macbooks, 1 imac, 1 dell and 1 vaio (currently at work). In every one of them the facebook banner is dark blue, mine is faded blue. Also searching "blue" in google images and compared them. The lighter blues, sky blues etc are vibrant and beautiful but dark blues are faded. I also noticed a similar problem when searching "green" in google images, specifically several shades of green are a yellow-green.

Red, however, is fixed... I think these LG panels one way or another simply have color gamut issues. They are very bright, very high resolution and sharp in every way from text to images to color blending the only issue is accurate color gamut reproduction.

EDIT: If you love everything about this laptop, don't let this be a deal breaker, everything is still incredible and the screen is gorgeous. Unless you are doing professional photo editing you shouldnt be disrupted by the color issues, its not nearly as bad as the original red-orange issue.

EDIT2: If you compare greens side by side with other displays, its actually pretty noticeably yellow-green instead of green. Sorry guys, looks like they did everything to shift the red-orange and ended up messing something else up potentially?

ehh i would rather have accurate red and washed out other colors than to have orange reds and ok others... red is used much more than green on the internet i belieeve

could any others check the blues? two of us have now reported that blue looks washed out (originally noticed by checking facebook's banner). i haven't compared the greens yet, i'll have to do that as well.

it's a bit disappointing that they weren't able to fix the issue without causing others. Nunzabar on this thread mentioned he would do a spyder calibration later - really looking forward to the results and if we can tune this guy to perfection.

Yeah that sounds like a plan :D didn't know it came in as two sticks xD

Hmmm 12GB sounds good too but idk if i necessarily need it, i see like a 240GB with just a bit over 200$ SATA III which i thought was great price on tigerdirect but i dont mind waiting a few months for it to really go down. what do you plan to do with the hdd you got? optical? enclosure?
Great videos man I just watched all of it. Wish you would've talked more about the "premium-ness" of envy and if it's really worth it paying extra compare to dv7. Gave it likes!

Good lord that is almost a two week delay. did you complain and get some money back?

Also as far as the battery life I like how they put

8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery - Up to 10.25 hours of battery life +++

What the hell does the +++ mean it should be ------

Dude seriously don't stress about the ram, you did the right thing. 6GB will be more then plenty, the most I've ever got my desktop up to is 4.3gb and that was having a million things open. You have to remember that RAM is not what will make rendering faster, that's all processing power so you made the right decision getting the quad core.

If the ram REALLY bothers you, it's easy to upgrade and way cheaper (you just need one 4gb stick to replace the 2gb stick) and that'll set you back like $20. It just wasn't worth $60 for 2gb extra

So you made the right choice

well im watching ur vids right now... idk if i would agree with the sound decision. Maybe its the speakers i was using but the dv7 sounded more like it was put on the "auditorium" setting it seemed kinda echo-y idk how to explain it. I think the beat was louder but the envy had the clearer audio

    ----

alright finished watching good job! and i like ur orange pen :D

Don't do that, you'll throttle the 8gb ram to 4gb speeds as far as I'm aware
I still think 6gb is more than enough, you'll find better results investing in a good SSD over luxury ram

So I gave HP a quick call and according to the rep my order was not delayed, although she doesn't have a tracking number yet. She asked if I had received any delay notice emails, I replied "no." Which she confirmed that they had not tried to email me any notice. She said something to the effect that it's not technically late and is within range of being shipped to what the estimated ship date was (the 14th). OK, I suppose. She said she would send a notice to whomever to see about updating the status online and sending me an update email. But since they don't do orders on the weekend I may not hear anything for 24 to 48 hours. She ended saying I should expect deliver by mid next week.

Nevermind. Just got an email saying it's delayed with an estimated shipping date of the 20th or before. It also says they don't anticipate any further delays. I sure hope not. I did get another email with a 15% off coupon to buy something in their store.

Just got the notice of my delay until 6/20 that really sucks I wanted my laptop. But at least with this extra time they can make sure every thing is right and in order. If they send me a laptop that has a hinge not set or something not correct I will be furious.

It is fine hp just make sure you get it right... though I am still gonna call up and try to get my $50 rebate.

I want to replace my primary hard drive with Sandisk Extreme 480gb SSD so I made sure, I backed up SwSetup, created system image (just in case) and recovery disks so that I can do minimal install on SSD.

I followed this tutorial ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecxdfCIZhsQ: I know this is for Envy 17 to add second caddy HDD but wanted to get an idea on where/how to access the hard drive). The guy in the video (at 3.30) talks about disconnecting cable connector but there is no such thing on the new Envy and I am confused/stuck on how to remove the battery or unplug the connector.

I also saw this HP doc/video: Removing and Replacing the Hard Disk Drive HP ENVY 15t-3000 CTO Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English). This is little confusing as well for me.

If anyone has any idea or detailed instructions, please let me know.

    Thanks!!

Okay here's the whole scoop, called HP early today and I assume the rep(american) basically lied to me and told me that my order had been shipped and i will have it in hands next week.

two hours or so later HP freaking emailed me saying there has been a delay and it won't ship till the 20th.

Made me furious so i just got done calling them again... some indian-accent lady picked up and of course her name was Sara.... -_- I told her what had happen and she said she's sorry and she can't do anything, so i asked for the 50$ rebate everyone's been getting and she said no she can't do that... so I demanded to talk to a supervisor. (and yes understanding her was hard)

the supervisor was american(easy to understand)
She apologized for everything and said that the earlier rep must've "assumed" my envy was shipped...
I told her i would like the 50$rebate that other people have been getting and she gave it to me... I also asked for it to be upgrade to 2day shipping but she said she can't change the order... so i nag on but got no result...
so i ended up with 50$ rebate... which i don't really care for I prefer having my envy shipped as it is... but I can say that the supervisor was actually pretty nice, I feel bad for having to rant on her but i hate being lied to...

So I guess now the only thing I can do is wait...
My Envy better not have defects I would absolutely hate to go through customer service hell again...

So has anybody figured out how to set it to fixed graphics mode? Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai does not seem to want to recognize the discrete card. I remember seeing stuff about that for the previous version, and fixed graphics mode fixed that.

You don't actually remove the battery, just the cover panel for it. Simply move the slider with the battery icon and slide off the panel. Then you will see the hard drive (It's under the flap with the windows 7 product key)

To remove the connector, look for a small plastic tab and pull that toward you. It should disconnect the hard drive from the motherboard. The 2nd video you posted clearly demonstrates this.

Is there something specific you find confusing about this video? I actually followed this exactly and it worked like a charm. The only thing it doesn't talk about is unscrewing the hard drive itself from the caddy. For that part, you just unscrew the 4 black screws and it slips right out.

    * bump * for more confirmations on the blue rendering. the more i look at it the faded blue puts a worn out hue on the whole screen. i alleviated it somewhat by changing some gamma and contrast values but would really like more input from those that have that laptop. so far two of us have reported this issue.

    ITEM SHIPPED!!!!! WHWOOWOWOWOOWOOWOWOOWOWOWO

    No tracking information yet though.

Ah thank jesus. Good luck to everyone else still waiting on their Envy's-- hopefully they're shipped out before the ESD. I ordered around 5-6pm on 6/3, original ESD was 6/12, then I received a delay notice that with a new ESD of 6/18. Looks like it shipped late at night on 6/15, or early in the morning 6/16. Hopefully this means ship dates prior to the new ESD's everyone has been receiving.

So far based on what I have seen the envy 15's amd 7750m has a 3dmark11 of about 1778 for gpu score
    I am tryin to decide between an envy 15 and a dell xps 15 l521x which supposedly has a gt640m gddr5 2gb

if the gt640m ddr3 version based on notebook check clocks in at around 1718 for the gpu so would the gddr5 version be higher than the 7750m?

I don't think so. As far as my understanding goes, the 640m has fewer cores than the 7750m, but they are clocked at a higher frequency. Therefore the 7750m can be reliable overclocked to match even the 650m. Either way, since the cores aren't running at such a high base frequency, the radeon will last longer, probably even after OCing it. Either way the 7750m is going to easily beat out the 640m, as we can almost get it to 650m levels (according to some speculation).

Or at least, that's the extent of my knowledge on the gpu issue.

Well, I downloaded afterburner and found the max clocks (at least in afterburner) were set to the normal clocks for the card. Is there some other program I can use instead?

And of course, my most graphics intensive game that I have, Shogun 2 FoTS won't even recognize the discrete card unless I can find a way to set this thing to fixed mode... -_-

HP!!! WHY U NO HAVE FIXED GRAPHICS OPTION IN BIOS?!?!?!??!1?!1?!sin(pi/2)?!1?one?!!
Also, does anybody know a desktop gadget for monitoring graphics card temps? Something like Core Temp?

There's no nice way to say it, that's a boat load of stupidity you just pulled here.

AMD and nvidia's GPUs use different architectures so neither the core count nor the clock speed are good indicators of which one performs better. Don't know where you got that stuff on the GPU life span being correlated to the frequency, as long as they're running according to specs and don't get too hot there's no way to guess which one will fail first based on the frequency.

Otherwise I think the 640m with GDDR5 should fare only slightly better than the DDR3 in 3dmark11 but the difference between the two in game will be important in some cases especially on 1080p res. The DDR3 version is bandwidth crippled which hurts performance quite badly at high-res & high settings.
Apparently 7750M and 640M (GDDR5) should be on par, more or less.

The SSD (at least the 256 GB option) is a Samsung 830 Series which according to several HD Benchmark websites is in the upper echelon of high end SSD's. I'm quite happy with that. Apart from its high read/write scores, Samsung SSD's in the past have been very reliable.

6 gb is the ideal. HP charges $60 for 8 gb, even though a stick of 8gb itself is only $60. This means you can swap out the 2gb stick for an 8gb stick and get 12gb of memory for $60 more.

So I called in to hp to get my $50 rebate and the lady was american and seemed pretty nice, but she said she couldn't give me the rebate. So I was like let me speak to a manager. 3 minutes later she came back and said that she could give me the rebate.

Really hp was that so hard?

EDIT: Also if anyone else gets the e-mail deals from newegg they have a 256gb crucial M4 for $180 which if I wasn't so cheap I would jump on right now....

After I get the laptop, the very first thing I would do is to test the graphics. Did I ever say anything about my company, I am actually working in nvidia. (prefer Kepler to and, but...)

Quick question guys, I noticed Windows 7 has automatically scheduled disk defragmenter. Should I turn that off and never defragment the SSD? I've read that running defrag will shorten SSD lifespan, then again most of these articles were written before TRIM was out. Also TRIM is automatically run, correct? There isn't a program I have to run to execute TRIM?

wait where does it say urs is shipped??? both my status pages are not changed =\. also what did u get again?

yeah the 2nd guy got it right... but we all are here to learn something new :p. Anyway, from what I have heard so far, the 7750m has a lot of potential to OC (looking at temps) but the 640m more than likely was using the turbo feature to achieve that score. the ddr5 only matters at high res (1080p) so then it doesnt getting bottlenecked

thats interesting how u went with an amd card :D
