There're only usually one model at stores like Costco, bestbuy, etc. I believe which is the "quick-ship" model from hp. There isn't one for ivy bridge right now but the envy 15 3040nr was the quick ship model at hp website and seen at stores... From what I've noticed anyways...
I'm not sure how they manufacture... You make it sound like each order to custom laptop seems such a waste of time and stuff. But it may not be that bad, the custom order can just in the computer and the computer just pick what component it has and build it... Computers can make CTO computers so time won't be waste as "arts and crafts outfits".
Then again they may mass produce each configuration but I don't understand where they go...
-
I used to work for IBM and worked with Lenovo partners. The laptops are assembled to order. They don't have a stockpile of CTO preassembled laptops (truly CTO). Preassembled latops are quick ships models.
We buy one off stuff from Dell all the time as well where I work now. A friend of mine works for Dell and they can send a quick ship model immediately or we can do a CTO model that ships after a week or so after assembly. -
Good news everyone, it seems to have moved from Shanghai to Shanghai! It might actually get here by Thursday
Edit: I called Fedex and go the automated system; it told me that "the package is on the way to the station that delivers to (zip code)"
Maybe it means something? -
-
that's good that CTO are actually CTO... I can assume this would be one of the reason to explain the built quality issue that some people have but not others... because each one is made individually.

What is the consensus on driver support for the second generation ENVY 15-32xx?
The video card on my ENVY 15-30xx crashes continuously with a "video hardware error" notice popping up and HP says it's "normal". It sometimes even happens when watching a DVD or even a flash video on YouTube. Since they don't consider it a defect, I can't get it replaced. I'm considering just taking the $1500 loss and buying a second generation model since my entire job depends on my computer and the crashes are causing a major losses of time each time it happens.
Anyways, will this new video card have new drivers available regularly or is it a one-time release like the original model?
Any feedback would be wonderful. -

What is the deal with the new displays? Have they fixed the color calibration problem?

Hope I did not run into the Dell XPS 15z deal going at Costco. Not sure how many of know but Costco is selling loaded XPS 15z for $699.99 at many places nationally ( Dell XPS 15Z HD LED at Costco - Slickdeals.net. Costco sells the similar laptop online for $1299 (it has 750gb HDD and 720p screen: Costco - Dell XPS 15z Laptop Intel® Core™ i7-2640M 2.8GHz 2GB NVIDIA Graphics 2-Year Dell Warranty
So, here I go to my local costco and pick that laptop.
Specs:
Intel Core i7-2640M processor 2.80 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.50 GHz
15.6"(39.6cm) FHD Widescreen,300-nit(typical)(1920x1080) 1080p
Silver Color
High Definition Audio with Waves MaxxAudio 3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M 2GB graphics
8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM(2x4GB)
1 TB 5400RPM Hard Drive
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
1.3MP HD with dual array digital microphones
64 WHr 8-Cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 with Bluetooth v3.0+HS
9.5mm SATA Slot Load DVD+/-RW
2 year manufacture warranty (My AmEx will extend it for another year).
Total: $758 (incl taxes)
I am torn between deciding these 2 laptops.
Here are some differences
- Envy is third gen Quad core While 15z is second gen dual core (4 thread)
- Surprisingly 15z looks/is bigger/taller than Envy which is compact
- 15z definitely has the "cool" look factor
- 8gb 1600 mHz on Envy Vs 8gb 1333 mHz on XPS
- Colors on 15z are incredible (reds, blues, greens are perfect). Though refreshed Envy's reds are fixed, blues and greens are faded.
- Envy screen is brighter, which is how I like. XPS screen is more like soft white while Envy is daylight bright.
- 2 gb Nvidia graphics card on XPS versus 1 gb ddr5 on Envy
- Touchpad on XPS is awesome, butter smooth compared to Envy which is little rough and hard on clicks.
- Both have 2 year warranty
- Price difference: Envy appr $350 more (I got 40% off on the Envy: 33% off coupon and an additional 10% off)
I hate that XPS does not have Pg Up/Pg Dn, Home/End dedicated buttons (have to use Fn on tiny up/down arrows).
I plan to install 480 gb Sandisk Extreme SSD on the primary drive on whatever laptop I decide to keep. So, not sure if XPS is as easy (as Envy) in terms of swapping primary drive.
Did any of you play with XPS 15z and what were your observations? I understand, everything is subjective and I have spent more than 5 hours comparing/playing with these laptops side-by-side.
Sorry for the long rant. Please let me know if anyone has a suggestion/advise. Thank You!! -

Can anyone confirm that there is/isn't a msata slot?

My envy was shipped 6/18 and has left Anchorage, AK today at 3:24 PM. It's estimated delivery is 6/21 at 10:30. I'm on the west coast so hopefully it gets here a day earlier.
-
So is mine the only one that took a pit stop in Narita-Shi Japan?
-
mines still hanging out with the chinese at shanghai. My stupid envy likes it there better than in my hands
-

If it weren't for the washed out blue/green situation the 15 would be superior - currently waiting for others to reply about the issue to see if I need to return mine. -
As am I. My laptop decided to take a break in Japan too. What the hell? Others' shipping logs didn't show a stop in Japan. -

Thanks!! I am leaning towards Envy. Sent my laptop to HP repair to remove the damaged screw on the back panel (screw is stripped/damaged and will not come out no matter what).
