i tried out tribes ascend... for some reason im getting around 20-30 fps maxed, but i dont really care cause its a really crappy game... idk how anyone plays it

So my envy finally arrived today, and I was really impressed by the way it looks. I haven’t had a chance to test out the screen colors yet, but I think I’ll try comparing it to my phone (HTC Sensation). I think most phones are pretty color accurate.

I was wondering if you guys experienced some of the issues I’m seeing: so the bottom panel that’s covering the battery isn’t quite flush with the computer, and it seems kinda loose. Also, there are a couple very small scratches or marks around the case.

Not even close at least for the (super/duper)AMOLED(HD/plus/whatever PR moronic suffix) types that Samsung and others use.

So has anyone successfully installed the BluRay drive in the Ivy Bridge ENVY's? I found this on ebay: New HP TS-TB23L 8X DL DVD±RW Blu-Ray ENVY 17, 17T SATA Drive | eBay but I don't know if it will work.

Sorry, I know there have been posts about the BluRay drive but the search feature keeps giving me a query error and does not return any results.

That won't work. You need a 9.55mm drive which is somewhere in the $200-$250 range as they're relatively new.

AMOLED screens will be heavily saturated/vibrant when compared to a calibrated screen - but generally they have a wide gamut.

Look forward to hearing about blue. My thread here has some pictures and comparisons. Ideally you'll have another laptop/desktop to compare it to.

I read at least 2 people that had some scuffs/scratches. The battery cover seems to be loose for most people. Mine arrived rock solid but now it is a tiny bit loose but for me and everyone else it's only noticeable if you pick it up and tap the panel deliberately.

Well, now that I have actually tested Shogun 2, instead of just seeing that it recognized only the HD4000 and giving up, I have found that though it only recognizes the HD4000, it still uses the 7750m. I fine tuned my settings to a slightly improved High preset, and with ultra unit size added through editing the settings file.

So basically, if you run into a game only recognizing the HD 4000, set it to high performance and run it anyway - it may still be using the 7750m, and swtichable graphics may still be working.

So I guess we may not need a fixed mode option in BIOS after all...

I just returned my first one, and I'm waiting on results from yours about color to see if I should try a third. Although I might do it anyway as I only just tested the DVD and it occasionally catches on the felt. Not too important, but another excuse to give the screen a third shot.

I did some picture comparisons and I'll upload them soon, but they suck awfully because my phone camera keeps horribly messing up the colors. All I can say for now is that red is absolutely perfect, blue looks about the same as my laptop display and a smidgen lighter than my phone display (but that could be oversaturated) but green looks a bit murky and dark. White's perfect compared to my phone.

Since the 33% off coupon has expired quickly, I was wondering if I were to buy the laptop using the 25% off coupon which gives me $411 dollars off, and lets say within the 21 day limit HP refreshes the 33% off coupon, would I be able to be reimbursed for the savings that I missed out on? Also, does ordering the 750gb hybrid HDD still delay the shipping order, because I'm going to need my laptop before August 24th?

I don't know if they would price match. More likely they'd have you return your unit and re-purchase with the coupon, which is pretty backwards but I believe it has to do with the way they track purchases. Although if you made a fuss it may work - customer support has actually been pretty helpful to me.

Sooooo don't leave me hanging, did it ship?

I really hope mine gets shipped on the 20th, cause then it would have the weekend to process/travel instead of having to wait till Monday+ for it to ship.

It also means it has to ship on time though, idk if that will happen with this supposed hybrid harddrive issue :[

Yay so my order status has changed to "shipped", with an estimated delivery on the 24th (to oregon, from china).

So it shipped two days early, nice (and it has the 7200rpm 750gb hybrid hard drive, so apparently it was not an issue).

Once again, i ordered on the 6th.

    Hey guys,

I am having some problems with game performance. I bought the total war mega pack off steam (unfortunately the day before it went on sale) and downloaded rome total war. Considering it is a 2004 game I assumed I would be able to run it on max settings at 1080p so I adjusted my settings according. I tried a quick battle and to my horror, fraps showed 10fps, completely unplayable! Is this a problem with graphics card switching? Is it only the HD 4000 running the game? I am very disappointed that I cannot play such an old game, any suggestions to fix the issue?

I have rome.exe set to high performance in AMD Catalyst. The laptop is plugged in and set to high performance in battery settings. I have all background apps shut down except for the game and fraps and I get 10FPS. What should I do?

I forgot to post in this thread! I just received my ENVY 15-3200 on Tuesday and I love it! I'm just having two problems with it:

    1. Auto volume leveling/Sound compression with the Beats IDT audio driver.
    2. Random high-contrast/high brightness moments with the screen (Basically, everything gets SUPER bright!)

Is anyone else having these problems?
Is there a fix for these problems?

Also, it's good to finally be posting here! I've been lurking here since Feb. (When I first got my ENVY 15 3040nr)

Have you downloaded the latest video drivers from HP's website?

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4063&aoid=35252

If you have, you can try installing the Catalyst 12.7 Beta over top of it. You won't lose switchable graphics, and I haven't had any problems with it (except when I got some BSODs because I made some changes in the registry to enable overclocking, but that's my fault.)

Cheers, I will try it now as long as it won't cause a BSOD or wreck beats audio?

Yes I have the latest drivers. Is rome total war just a graphically demanding game due to poor optimisation? Or (perhaps more likely) my graphics card is not working?

I still need to figure out what's causing that bright/overly contrasted display issue though. (Or hopefully someone has already figured it out!)

Do you guys think this laptop is portable enough (1.11" and 5.8lbs isn't exactly the thinnest and lightest) to move around everyday to classes and such for college?

It is, but if you do a lot of walking you'll be happier with something smaller; especially if you're carrying books and papers as well. Unless you need a be-all solution I'd really suggest getting a desktop + ultrabook for college. I really think an ultrabook is more than enough to handle most college work (I was an EECS student) even if it's a little bit slow. I had a desktop too and in the end it was only used for gaming and watching movies.
