Just wondering, how do I check the model number for my screen? I just received a properly-functioning Envy 15 Ivy Bridge and it appears that the orange/red issue is exactly the same as it was with my Envy 15 Sandy Bridge. Anyone knows what is the latest model number for the new screen, and where can I check it?

i think its somewhere in device manager under monitor or something.

    ---

on another note i realized how incredibly biased scores amd gives us. they said the 7770m scores around p2.4k on 3dmark11 with the gpu at 2110. i clocked my 7750m to a greater speed of 696 (vs 675) and the highest is this: AMD Radeon HD 7750M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3720QM Processor,Hewlett-Packard 1851 score: P2245 3DMarks which is clearly a couple hundred points less lol.

but damn i wish we were able to up the volts a bit this card would kill

So I'm getting about 80 degrees C on Coretemp after playing a few hours of league of legends. Is this normal? It gets hotter playing lol than most other games.

i just checked up on the other laptop i was considering (and was still considering a few mins ago if the 2nd replacement had problems) the new dell xps 15, and apparently its having massive throttle issues and wifi issues. im glad i went with the envy :D. lower price for a much better speced machine that weighs about the same. I dont have any regrets

Alright, It's been awhile since I posted last. The gaming issues seem to've somewhat resolved themselves (I can play most things relatively well - not as well as what it should be, probably). However, now I'm coming across another problem. Running on lowest brightness, speakers on low/muted, backlight off, proximity sensor on (mainly because I don't really know what it does nor how to turn it off), my battery life is atrocious. I'm looking at the indicator right now (the built in windows one) - I have 65% charge remaining, but only 1 hour and 21 minutes. If you do some math, that means I only would supposedly get about 2 hours at max charge. While I guess it could be right, considering the envy is a performance/media notebook, I still feel like it's on the low end with what's reported here (at least 3 hours, usually??). I've been browsing around some and found a thread with a fix by Leshcat that supposedly could help with battery life and graphics performance at the same time. Any help?

Also, I think that HP has quite a few fixes to release for this.. though I personally doubt they ever will (even a bios with fixed graphics options would be helpful!).

Aah, take the inbuilt Windows battery life indicator with a pinch of salt.. :p I'm on 93% with screen at 50% brightness (on Hp recommended power plan) and still it says 4hr 47 left. Changing to power saver mode doesn't change the time left at all, therefore showing how inaccurate the reader is. If you really want to test your laptop's true batery life, I would recommend you do an actual battery test yourself if you have the time. If you do use the windows reader, I would advise you to wait a bit first for it to adjust the time. I personally don't really look it the time and just the %

yeah like the other guy said the windows battery estimate is very inaccurate. sometimes it tells me 6 hrs on 100% and sometimes it tells me 2 hrs. and these arent during intensive tasks. i recommend u download "battery bar" its this little icon thing that sits on ur taskbar and tells u the battery life. its pretty accurate. it collects data so it improves over time. since i have been mostly streaming hd videos with brightness at 100% and volume at like 60%, my estimated time is around 2.5 hrs. I discovered the speakers do drain the battery like no other cause when i used headphones, it added like 30-45 mins to that time. turning down the brightness i bet will also help greatly to bring the battery life to around 4 hrs if ur streaming with lowest brightness and headphones.

i did run the "readers test" that notebookcheck ran on the previous gen with fixed graphics. they got i think 6.5 hrs, i got like 6.3 hrs so i dont think enduro affected it much. i think for notes and minor tasks without draining the battery with the screen and speakers u should get a solid 4-5 hrs

Hello, i got the envy 15 3204tx with 7750m 1gb ddr5 with the switchable graphics (no bios option for manual switching), how would i go about overclocking it? I read somewhere that overclocking works only for the manual switching? i downloaded afterburner but it wouldn't let me change anything..

When i run afterburner it says my max core clock is 575MHz did yours say 675? Also was it only the core clock you increased? what of the memory clock? Thanks

Edit: I got some figures, 663 for core clock and 1065 for memory clock, however afterburner doesn't allow me to change the values, i changed the Enableulps value from 1 to 0 in the registry, restarted, 12.7 beta drivers are installed, i edited the afterburner cfg file, still nothing... what else am i supposed to do? Thanks

I have been following the threads for both laptops as well. I had high hopes for the XPS15 but there are some issues for sure. I hope they are able to get the issues resolved as i do like the design. The Envy 15 looks like a very nice laptop and a great deal with the HP coupons when they come up. I am just sad that HP did not include an MSATA slot. I really want to run a an MSATA SSD around 100 gb with the OS and then keep the large hard drive for storage.

I have that setup with a 2.5 120GB SSD and 750GB HD in my current ASUS and like it. However, this thing is huge and weighs a ton :( (hence my search for a thinner lighter laptop).

So the search continues, but I have not ruled out the Envy 15 yet.

mine also said 575 on core lol. my replacement was able to go up to 696/1000 and my current orginial one can go up to 667/1000. u should prolly change enableulps ack to 1 cause apparently thats helpful for battery life and not needed. ur missing 2 dll files cause amd removed them from ccc. lemme c if i still got them on my comp somewhere.

    --------------

i uploaded the files and they attached to this message. just extract them and put them where afterburner.exe is located

yeah i was kinda dissapointed in that too but prolly in the next revision. but honestly it doesnt really matter to me cause my replacement is gonna have the hybrid and then ill eventually invest in the 512 gb ssds when they fall less than .5$/gb. i realizzed i havent used more than 400 gbs of data even with multiple games, bluray movies, dozens of song albums so i should be fine. if needed i do have a pocket external hdd i could use

This is becoming outright annoying now, i got everything set up, overclocked the 7750m, ran the 3dmark11 tests and now i'm getting lower scores than when the card wasn't "overclocked"? ?! results of the first test AMD Radeon HD 7750M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,Hewlett-Packard 1851 score: P1793 3DMarks and of the second test AMD Radeon HD 7750M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,Hewlett-Packard 1851 score: P700 3DMarks . I'm going to uninstall the 12.7 beta drivers and see what happens

finally able to get the afterburner to OC my 7750m, but i still got marks lower than i was expecting... does the CPU (mine is 3610QM) and the 1tb 5400rpm hdd also affect the 3dmark11 scores (since that tests only GPU)?

do the temps only show up on hwinfo32 when it is actaully running the hwmonitor? Mine usually doesn't display either the hd4000 or the 7750m, but it has at times shown the hd4000 but have never seen the 7750m temps displayed.

I found that my computer has the CD drive ejection issue. I'm going to order a replacement, and I was wondering if you guys have any tips (what should I ask for, etc.) How did you guys convince them to let you keep the original laptop till the new one got to you. Also, is there a particular person that I should try to speak to that knows what's going on? Thanks a lot.

hmm try getting a case manager. if its ur first replacement, push for an upgrade. i pushed for the hybrid drive. for the orignial just tell them ull ship it back when ur replacement comes but they will charge u for the replamcenet and refund u the money for the orignial when tehy get it back. and if the person doesnt budge with the upgrade. tell them u will think about it and call again and make sure its a new person. tehy will prolly do the upgrade. just make a fuss and they will try to please u :p

Ok so i just go my envy. The first moment i picked it up i didn't feel like it was very solidly built.. The back cover isnt very tightly connected to the machine. On the right hand side (when the back is facing you) i could tap the back cover and it makes alot of noise, the left hand side is solidly on though. Is anyone's else machine like this or is it just mines? I dont think a 1500$ laptop should have problems like this

Do you mean the removable battery door? I think a lot of people have this issue at different levels of severity. My first one was solid, and my replacement tapped slightly but neither of them felt shoddy.

Also for some reason afterburner doesn't seem to get any readings from my video card. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Thanks for the advice btw. I'm going to call them today. Hopefully I can get them not to charge for the new one at all because i dont want to be missing 1500 till the refund comes through.

EDIT: I dunno how you got that upgrade lol they wont budge and want to charge extra.

Received mine yesterday. Decent laptop overall. but I just returned for an exchange because of the defect front speaker, which had blown sound. I would say the QC of parts and laptop assembling in china fails. Besides, the monitor did have faded blue color issue, but the orange red problem was fixed. I hope I can get a perfect one for the exchange; otherwise, I would just get a refund. Good luck on your orders, people!

I've looked at 4 Envy 15 with the faded blues issue and I've come to accept that this is just the panel. If there are those out there that have perfect colors, then I just seem to have terrible luck, which is odd considering more people answered on the poll that their blues look correct.

as for the upgrade... some of the reps r nice enough to do it. mine just "slipped" it in there while reconfiguring my replacement. I just told her i felt like an upgrade should be in order like maybe the ram or my hardrive to the hybrid. so shes like lemme c what i can do and then she said "oh seems like ur original order was wrong u should have gotten the hybrid" lol

honestly i think its just we all r upgrading from bad panels so this is a godsend

Definitely a possibility. I'd love it if someone with a perfect panel did a Spyder test of some type. Unfortunately I think only the Elite model does this which cost me $250, but I was considering buying it already.

In my case, I haven't received my replacement yet. I didn't ask for extra money, since that was my first replacement. But, they did give me 2 day shipping. The return shipping was quite fast. It only took 2 days for HP to get the package and then they ordered a new one immediately.

Anyone here own or previously owned both an Envy 15 and an Envy 14 Spectre? I'm really liking how the Spectre looks, but haven't actually seen an Envy 15 in person yet. I'm unashamed to say that I like them both because they resemble Macbooks, while still being able to run Windows without problems. Besides the Gorilla Glass, are there any major design differences (USB/charge port location, quality of trackpad) that I should know about? Also, I know that both have beautiful screens, but there have been reports of off-reds on 15s and off-blues on Spectres - is that still the case?

honestly, thats why i went for envy also. i hate the macos but i loved the style haha. but the macbook track pad is glass i think so the fingers glide on it however, the envy trackpad is also good. and the colors of the screen is fixed. i would have gotten 14 if they had a performance model but they dont :(

Having owned a spectre (briefly) I can say that they have a really nice trackpad for scrolling (2 finger scroll etc) but not sensitive enough for moving around the screen, which annoyed me. Also, the left click is very tough. It could also get quite sticky if my fingers were greasy and had to be cleaned before going back to smooth scrolling.

I hated the keypad, the keys didn't have a very nice finish (in my opinion) and lacked travel. It was with a huge amount of relief that I went back to my Vaio E Series. Battery life was average, 4-5 hours (didn't have the Ivy Bridge model though) which seems to be about what people get on here for the Envy 15.

Design was gorgeous, felt very solid, looked great and got many compliments, and I loved that regard of it. Didn't have any complaints with the screen, but not being aware of the red issue or anything I didn't scrutinise it enough to say if it had a problem.

Hey all, happy to report a well working unit with zero qc issues that I can see. However, while doing some downloading and gaming on my desk, at some point a heat warning appeared in my hp support assistance thing, I was wondering if anyone else had gotten one of these and if I should be worried/start monitoring temps at all?

Yeah, if they had the same performance specs and a slightly bigger screen option for the Spectre, I'd definitely get that. How is the Radiance 1920x1080 display, by the way? Is it worth the extra $150?

Thanks for the input - I'm used to not having keys with much finish, so I don't think it'll be a big issue. Did you feel the keyboard flex at all? And you had a Spectre, not a 15, right? Did the glass get marked up by fingerprints easily?

Yep indeed it was a Spectre

It depends what keyboard you come from as to whether or not you'll even notice the difference, it's just that this Sony keyboard is sooo good haha. I did check for flex, and not 100% sure (memory faded a bit..) but pretty sure there was only very minimal flex with a reasonable force. So for normal typing, no flex.

Yea the glass got a bit marked up, not too bad though. The top cover was worse, but I just used a sleeve every few days to clean it. Worth the hassle in my opinion. The screen itself wasn't too bad at all, again just use a screen cleaner when necessary.

Just with regards to the screen, I found it to be pretty adequate. 900p is a nice res for a screen that size.

I just got crazy temperatures!! i was playing swtor and I felt like my laptop was getting hot so i downloaded core temp and my cpu reached 79 degrees C!!! which is a good bit more than it should be! this computer is brand new! Why are the temperatures so high? the fans should be working fine, idk if it has one or two but they are running so should i download another program or try and see why my computer is getting so hot? and this is after maybe 10 minutes of playing!

Edit: i just read that the max temp is 105 but around 80 seems high, or am I just being super paranoid? Also what is the best free temp monitoring software?

I think i might have finally gotten the perfect envy 15 lol. I odnt wanna get my hopes up but from initial impressions, i dont c any scuffs or marks, no dented ports, the cd drive felt looks clean (havent tested it yet) no screen popping out (the reflections are abit wavy on the edges but it doesnt seem like the glass is popping) none of the keys seem to stick, the trackpad looks fine. no bottom panel sqeaking. no harddrive malfunctioning. hopefully this is the one... cause im outta time. if anything happens i cant send it back in D:

    will keep you guys updated!

Hey, just curious-is your keyboard flat? Mine is like a wave, but everything else was ok and they gave me $30 for it, so I kept it anyway...

Does anyone elses fans kinda click? it is really really faint and can only be heard when it is really quiet and you listen for it but every once in a while they will make a faint little sound. Almost like it is flicking a piece of paper.
