Just to reconfirm, you can manually enable and disable the 7750m in the graphics control panel?
My Y470 has a physical switch on the laptop that many websites thought was archaic, I think it's fantastic as flipping the switch takes 1 sec and there's never having to guess.
-
All dual gfx laptops should have this. Or an option to just say "when on AC power, always use dedicated GPU"
-
Starcraft 2 + some different FPS (left 4 dead 2, crysis 2, probably crysis 3 in the future, far cry 3, battlefield series)
I know that the owners of the 7970m have pretty much gone nuclear against AMD and its enduro system because it's badly underutilizing, but if the basic switching works and there's no huge underutilization problem on the 7750m then I'm pretty comfortable. I loved the nvidia on my sony vaio s but the speakers -- had to turn that crap back in. Thinking of returning this samsung because it gets too darn hot. Starcraft 2 matches take a while gotta be more comfortable than that! -
sc2 should be fine, l4d2 u can max at 60 fps, crysis should be fine at high settings at 1080p with 30+fps idk far cry, bf3 should be high atleast
-
Do you get throttling issues with the card dialing down, switching to intel hd 4000 in the middle of gaming or anything?
-
nope. it runs very well
-
Thanks. Have you thought about making any gaming videos? You'd probably kill with one as there are a total of...zero for this card or this laptop and the envy 15 is probably increasingly popular.
-
im in college no time for games haha. and i dont have very many installed on this cause its my replacement envy and i never really got time b4 i moved in. u can look at the envy 17 gaming videos the user adam something put up. The envy 15 will have 10-20% less performance than that
-
Hey JunkStory, did you receive a shipping notification yet?
I called HP and they said they're waiting on the i7 component. As of today, my Envy 15 STILL hasnt shipped. Freakin ridiculous if you ask me. -
I just came here to ask the same question.
Nope - mine hasn't shipped yet, but mine is an i5.
Looks like it's going to be a long wait. The fact that they already charged out credit card and won't allow us to cancel an order is insulting. -
I actually tried the hp envy 17 in the microsoft store and turned on microsoft flight. At max resolution it ran okay on low and terrible on high, the card was obviously not auto-switching. played around with it, I think microsoft signature dudes hid the catalsyt control center. Really not impressed with AMD's terrible software. I wish they'd built this laptop with nvidia then I might more strongly consider it, looking more at ASUS now even though I don't want that number pad (i hear dv6t has bad cooling)...
-
yeah stay away from the dv6. btw just a question... was the envy plugged in when you tested it?
----
im dling flight now. lets c if it auto picks up on mine -
Just got this in from HP-- a notification of a ship delay:
Thank you for choosing HP. We understand you are anticipating receipt of your new customized computer and therefore are contacting you with an update on the build of your customized PC. Due to an unplanned delay in the production process, we will be unable to ship your customized order as originally planned.
We now expect to complete your order on or before a revised ship date of 9/13/2012 . At shipment, we will email you a shipping notification with your carrier tracking number. You can then track your shipment online to obtain the estimated delivery date.
Gave me a coupon code to use on future products, but not combinable with other offers.. -
for people whos order got delayed, call in and ask for the manager for some compensation and they should give u 50$ off i think (or it might be 100). I got that and i used my 15% off on some beats headphones haha. (yeah ik they suck but they go with the laptop
)
-
Does anyone have a problem with earphones being too loud? With the speakers I put the volume on 70 but with headphones I have to dial it down to 1 or 2 or else it's way too loud. Is this a driver issue?
-
yeah earphones are loud. I think its just amped up due to the beats so then the external speakers can go up higher.
-
Yeah it was.
-
Placed my order on 8/21 with an estimated ship date of 9/11. Received an email this morning that it has shipped. Says it should be here by Friday which seems pretty fast for the standard 5 to 7 day shipping. Here are my specs:

I got my shipping notification this morning as well.
-
I might be in the same boat with everyone else when it comes to a shipping delay. I placed my order on August 23rd and it had a shipping date of 9/10 and no notification that it's shipped. It still shows a shipping date of yesterday in the system. They blamed it on their system not updating, but I never received an e-mail with shipment information. If they didn't ship it yesterday, I'll be calling and asking for some compensation.
-
That's a bummer. I ordered Aug 20, 2012 (expected shipping was 9/10/12). My order just shipped today with expected delivery of 9/17/12.

I just got the e-mail that notified me of the delay on the shipping date to 9/17/2012 (from 9/10/12). I did indeed call and get my $50 compensation, so that's good. Thanks PaKii94 for the heads up.

Frankly, this is making me think more and more about just getting one of the 13" Retina Macbooks when they're released and returning this one. I did have some concerns about the weight of the Envy15, as I travel frequently, so depending on what Mac does, that will determine if I keep the Envy or just get the Macbook and install Windows 7 in Bootcamp. -
np +rep doesnt hurt
. as for weight, im a college student and i find it is fine for traveling around idk why people complain so much. I still consider the envy a top contender however only other options i would consider is the rmbp but for me thats waayyy too expensive and i dont like OSx. I do want the new asus u500 looks very sexy and it has good everything and thermals arent looking too shabby either.
the guy accross the hall has the retina mbp and i have carried it around and compared the thickness and i can tell you... there is a difference but not much. the thickness difference is only like 10 sheets of paper so nothing major and its only around 1 lbs less than the envy. -
The 15" Retina MacBook Pro is about a pound lighter than the Envy and the 13" will probably be even lighter. The 13" should also be much cheaper than the 15" as well. The only question I have is what video card the 13" will have in it, as I play games. That's actually one of the reasons that I decided on the Envy over the Asus UX32VD. Just way more horsepower.
I know that you probably travel a fair bit, as I was a college student once, but that's a little different than my current case, in which I spend at least 50% of the year on the road. I carry two laptops (work and personal) and having a lighter, slimmer laptop would be a massive improvement for me. I'm just trying to find a common ground of portability and horsepower. The Envy15 seems like it might be a good option, but a 13" might be better. -
i highly doubt the 13 in is gonna have a gpu the current thicker one doesnt have it. and yeah i understand what you are saying. I was hoping they would refresh the envy 14 but guess not. maybe next gen
-
I don't know... they might need a dGPU to keep up with that Retina Display
-
the hd 4000 can handle up to 4k res i believe so that shouldnt be an issue. The 15 in doesnt run on 650m all the time
----
thats like saying the zenbook need atleast a 550m/6750m to handle the 1080p displays -
Give the microsoft flight a shot?
-
Not for everyday use, but for interactive content, even very minor games, you would need the extra power for that retina display
-
Their current gen of retina you can just play the games in lower resolution anyway. If they do put a dedicated GPU in it expect the 13 inch retina to cost like 1700 dollars knowing Apple...
-
i never got around to turning it on with psu plugged in usually i just charge laptop when im sleeping haha ill try to remember to do it tonight
-
I did receive my shipping notification this morning, so it is on the way. It should be here next week.
-
Lol i would pounce at a 1,700, 13 inch rMBP with a dGPU
-
-
Yes, the ENVY 15-3040NR was previously a pre-built model of this unit. But its the same externally.
-
I wouldn't pounce at $1,700 (with a dedicated GPU), but I'd be interested. At $1,500 or $1,600, it would be no question.
But frankly, given the deal I got on the Envy 15, I'm at least going to give it a fair shot. Given the coupon and the $50 credit due to the late shipment, it was only $1130 (including tax). Given the hardware, that's a steal of a deal. -
get clear or u cant use backlight. also i got keyboard cover+antiglare screen protector for 18$
-
Just got my Envy. I don't see any problems with it so far however I am having trouble with the touchpad. Anyone else? It's extremely stiff and the right click doesn't seem to be working well at all. Any ideas on how to fix it?
-
Just saw the HP Envy in a Hampton Commercial. It made me happy
-
Just got my Envy 15 this morning. Wont even start, says "Disk error". I ran some basic tests with the built-in diagnostics and it's either saying no HDD installed or a severe hard drive error.
Well folks, looks like the rumors about HP was right. This is truly unacceptable. -
did u happen to get the hybrid hardrive? this happened with my second replacement. He had me reinstall windows and it was working but i didnt want to take the risk while doing school work so i sent it back in.
-
Update: The computer works now. I spoke with one guy in Tech Support and he had me do a hard reset by holding down the Beats button and the Power button. Then it booted into Windows. This with the regular 750 gb non-hybrid drive.
The guy in the sales section did not allow me to talk to a superviser though, but this guy was a total moron and knew nothing about the actual computer itself. He wanted me to remove the battery but I said it's screwed in.
Well in any case, it works now. 3DMark11 score was P2094, non-OC. Doesn't seem to be running hot at all. -
yeah tech support had me do the same thing. and its never going to run hot unless u clog up the fans or until we get bios mods and we can overvolt the card
-
Well I got the blue screen of death and the same hard drive failures again. On the phone with returns and exchange now constantly asking for a supervisor.
Tech support offered that they can send me a box, and I can ship it back to have the hard drive repaired, but during this time, the clock is ticking for the 21 day return. -
just ask for an exchange. unless everything else about ur machine is perfectt
-
They are saying I'll be lucky to get it for the same price since the coupon has expired now. And that building a new one will take another two weeks plus shipping time. UNF**BELIEVABLE.
I've been on the phone over an hour on this call alone. Now I'm being referred to the resolutions department. Of course each transfer includes a pretty long waiting time and/or some automated phone system. -
ask for a supervisor/case manager. they are usually the ones with power. my coupon had expired so when they started the order they charged me extra, however, when it was shipped they gave me a credit to my account to bring the price back. i advise billing to a bill me later or hp preffered account so then u can first get a laptop ur satisfied with then pay the bills. also be sure to ask for priorty shpping, any small upgrades ( i got upgraded from regular harddrive to hybrid) , any discounts ( i got 50$ off for delay). hope that helps! back to studying

For information. HP Support assistant notified me about updates and after several passes I decide to read it and discovered BIOS update. Installed. Just fo interest launched MSI Afterburner and Kombustor. Kombustor indicates VGPU 0.900V and to the best of my memory with F.06 the VGPU was at 0,875V. If i'm not mistaken, hp changed VGPU value through system BIOS update. So if it possible to decompile system BIOS it would be also possible to change GPU voltage, this info for some guys here, who wanted to change this voltage. For the accuracy of the assumptions after this update I can reach VGPU of 710MHz with full stability and 20123 3D Mark'11 GPU Score now although earlier I could reach stability only at 680MHz. And in attachment is screenshot of 3DMark'11 innaccurate calculation at 710MHz, just for lulz.

hmm when i get the chance ill check out kombustor when i get the chance... im on f07 btw and my highest stable i have gotten is 739/1125 (running benchmarks multiple times without issue). 740 it runs 70% of the time
i got inaccurate results like 20% of the time for somereason
---------------
also random note i love how loud the speakers get
. there isnt much bass but the sound is loud and remains clear. my roomates mbp start distorting at 70 and his 70 is like my 40
-
yo mybad man it took so long. this is what happened when i started it up:
when i first started it, it ran on the intel card and @ max settings i was getting around 5-7 fps (on the first mission thing at the beginning). when i closed it, the gfx thing popped up asking which card i wanted to use. i chose high performance and started it up again. now at max i got 17-20 fps (this is with vsync on). i dialed it down to high settings and no vsync and i got around 30. at hardware optimized, i was getting 70-90. so yeah it didnt detect it at first but after selecting high peformance, its running on radeon now.
NOW AVAILABLE: ENVY 15-32XX Intel Ivy Bridge (AMD 7750M)
