Yeah its doable but its out of consideration for just about everyone... to do it you would have to be a skilled electrical engineer and programmer and then it would be so much work still.... youd be better off spending that time working, earning money for a new computer instead.

^ then you need to unlock the bios then recode the sub vbios attached in there. One chance or you buy a new mobo

What I don't understand with Hp, is why they don't just release a true gaming laptop? Pretty much every other major Pc manufacturer has at least one dedicated gaming laptop.Even Samsung who never expressed interest in laptop gaming before, has released a high end gaming laptop now.
-
Ok do we have any concrete info on this laptop or is this thread reduced to what you would like to see HP do in the near future?
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
we are discussing the new releases from amd that can fit in the tdp design of the nevy 15 for obvious reasons -
-
While we dont have any concrete details, we do know that HP will be releasing a update to the envy line soon that will give it ivybridge, along with that HP would be plain dumb to not update the gpu as well.
From that we can speculate that it will get atleast a 7750m or nvidia equivalent.
Although lets hope for something a little better otherwise im off to dell for their new xps which looks amazing, the internals arent just there. But i would be ok with a i7-3612qm and a 640m which should have insane overlocking abilities seeing as its the same as the 660m only heavily downclocked and binned. (Hoping for a gddr5 variant and good cooling cmon dell!) -
I was hoping for a release date. Don't really care about all this speculation over the GPU, just want Ivy Bridge already.

VoodooPC was a third party company founded by Rahul Sood that designed niche desktops and laptops for gaming. In 2006, HP acquired VoodooPC and hired Rahul as CTO of its Voodoo Global Business unit.
In 2010 he resigned from HP and went to work for Microsoft. -
Well this is a little off thread but has great implications and I love to read everyones speculation.

Looks to me the DV series will get the IB before the Envys -
can one of my chinese bros translate the OP on this: 7850MºÍ7750MÏûÏ¢£¬Ö»½µÆµ£¬ÎÞDDR3°æ£¬¿´Ë»¹¸Ò³öDDR3°æ_±Ê¼Ç±¾°É_°Ù¶ÈÌù°É What is he saying about the 78xx-77xxm series -
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
He said that the 7750M will be the same as the 7770M, only downclocked from 675 MHz to 575 MHz, while the 7850M will be a downclocked 7870M - from 800 MHz to 675 MHz. I believe he also said there will be no DDR3 variants. According to the poster, the 7750M will compete with the GDDR5 640M and the DDR3 650M, the 7770M with the GDDR5 650M, and the 7850M with the 660M.
After a little more looking, it looks like the discussion moves over to the 640M LE - which I believe is the Kepler 640M - discussing whether any machines other than the Lenovo y480 have it yet. -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
yeah they got wrong that part, the 640m LE is basically a gt430m/435m/540m/555m, its a fermi core. shader count is 96 or 144, if its the latter its the newer revision of the gt 555m the 5th variant of that card that as equipping the lg p330
-
) and then i would oc it (if possible) to 7870m levels
-
After all of the misinformation which came from the Chinese forums in relation to the 7900M, I see no reason to just blindly believe what was said there.
-
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
But the clocks should be around that area, so while skeptical, it can be true -
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
-
yeah the 640m LE is the fermi. the rest are kepler.
on another note, I am thinking of buying the current envy to use and assmilate to for 20 days and return on 21st so then when the refresh comes out( or we find out mroe info) i can just get that. I jsut want a laaptop i can game on with my friends and use which doesnt always need a psu -__- -

will they have a not crappy/ at least better trackpad this refresh?
-
-
I've given up on hope a PC manufacturer will get off its butt and design a good touchpad AND code good touchpad software, both which are comparable to the MBP's.
I do hope Windows 8 delivers at least to the extent of making PC touchpads at least marginally easier to use.
Synaptics for several years has been trumpeting their multitouch Clickpad developments. They even started out collaborating with HP to make some for the Envy 14, but that apparently never worked out. I've been skeptical about all the fluffed up promises they made lately.
All that aside...would it be better to wait until Windows 8 gets released? I'd hate to pay extra for a license! -
. but for windows 8... i havent heard much but from what I have heard, its not that special. w8 is built so it can be supported by everything (tablet, phone, laptop) thats the big pull for it. also the automatic tiles? i guess they would make life easier with autoupdating but i bet there will be bugs to those and for gamers just hog memory. so tahts just from what i have heard/seen so far...
-
No, the clickpad never came to fruition. I'm using the fixes for the touchpad, but again, it's not a true clickpad if I can click down from only 2 corners instead of 4. -
well you win some and you lose some. as for the corners, doesnt the mbp also only click from two? cause i used my friends yesterday and I think it was only 2 corners... (i wasnt testing it out or anything so im not sure lol)
-
On notebookcheck, there are now some synthetic benchmarks of the HD 7770M and HD 7870M. Performance looks very good, the HD 7770M topping the GTX 560M and GT 650m, and the HD 7870M on par with the HD 6950M and GTX 670M (aka a higher clocked GTX 570M).
I'd guess the HD 7750M will have similar performance to the lower clocked GT 650M w/GDDR5, though both GPU's will probably have great overclocking headroom.
As a side note, these mobile GPU's were apparently tested on a desktop with the i7-2600k (kind of amusing if AMD sent this out as a test system). From what I understand, the "3DMark 11 - Performance GPU" shouldn't be affected by the faster CPU, but I believe the "3DMark 11 - Performance" does account for CPU performance. -
yeah the 7750/7770m are going to be around gt 650 levels, the 78xxms are going to compete with 660m and 670m i believe
-
ordered laptop and it came with dented usb ports.
i return it in 14 days later no problem. exchange comes and guess what
dented usb ports, except this one is even more dented to the point i can't get a usb plug in.
sending it back tomorrow for a full refund this time.
skeptical about even bothering with hp for the new refresh if they can't even get decent build quality on their "premium" line.
also both times the shipping and the interior envy box were not dented. they even pack it pretty well. -
do you have pics? Baited?
i got 2 hp envys and i sent one in cuz the lid wouldn't close on the 17 on the left side
also any updates on the new upgrade for the 15?? -
I'm pretty sure it was 4 corners. Then again, false memories do occur for a reason, so I could be wrong!
But yeah, you certainly take what you can get. The Envy 14 even excluding Microsoft "accidentally" doing the equivalent of giving me double cashback was well-priced at just under $1,000. The touchpad was not half bad after the fixes. The ATI 5650 though ancient, is still usable for Diablo 3. Not complaining here!
But this old workhorse is due for a replacement soon. Still going to use it and pick up the Ivy Bridge Envy 15 when it releases. But I really do hope HP has fixed all the bugs associated with the orange/red display. Premium notebooks should get premium treatment. That should translate into HP putting its best foot forward and ensuring at the R&D and testing stages we don't encounter such problems. -
finally for the clickpad, I tried all the models that had it and none had 4 corner clicking even the mbp. you must have false memories -
I guess I'm wrong then, haha!!
Sigh. So many choices out there. Debating whether to spend more $$$ and get more bang for buck and build a desktop and upgrade it to Windows 8 now, or save $$$ and gaming performance, wait a year, and get a refreshed Envy 15 when it comes out with IB and ditch getting a desktop altogether. The current pricing regime including a Square Trade warranty will probably require that I tack on $100-150 more for a 3-year warranty.
Option 1: Desktop.
That means I need to keep my Envy 14 as it is a bit longer, possibly 4 years.
Option 2: Get a refreshed Envy 15
Envy 14 will only be a little over 2 years going on 3. -
-
Depends. When did the last refresh happen? I'm looking at a late summer/early fall refresh. June/July/Aug time frame. I believe that's how it was for the Envy 14 and Envy 17 in 2010. -
-
Bah. I think I've made my decision. I'm giving up LAN gaming for good as all my friends have moved elsewhere. I guess I'm best off making a desktop for $700 or under and keeping my Envy for 1-2 more years. After that, I'll buy the future Envy 15 of 2014 only if they've killed the optical drive or there just aren't any competitors in this field. If they haven't, I'll probably go for whatever thin/light/powerful alternative that also has a high-res, high-gamut display. -
-
The DV series is now featured on the HP front page as "the new black" and can be ordered with Nvidia graphics and third generation Intel Core iN processors.
If I remember correctly, while reading this thread, it said the more expensive notebooks as the Envy 15 I'm planning to get will get the refresh first? -
I just discovered this potential/eventual refresh. I currently own a 1st generation Envy 15 with i5 and SSD (refreshed/2nd version - 1xxx series I believe).
Having had this machine for the past few years, I have narrowed my complaints down to 2 things:
1-Touchpad. This thing is so miserable, but I got used to it. Anyone who tried using my machine could barely do it without misclicks during typing, lack of response, and cursor jumps
2-Heat. I heard that the i7 versions were even worse with heat, and that nearly blows my mind.
Having seen the new 3xxx version of the envy 15, it looks like the heat was taken care of, and they built upon an already amazing form factor. The red/orange screen issue is really a bummer, considering how nice the screen seems to be otherwise.
WHY haven't they figured out that synaptics/touchpads on their machines simply aren't cutting it?
If the touchpad and red/orange screen are addressed, along with this seemingly large GPU upgrade, I don't see how this laptop won't be one of the best options out there.
Oh yeah, and HP's support team in India is horrendous. Had tons of problems with that years ago. Has it gotten any better?
I would love to see any further speculation about this machine and its competition that will be available in the coming 2-4 months. -
We haven't had any official announcements about the Envy 15, and the refresh may take another few months. Here's hoping for an early summer release...
-
i like the trackpad right now, what kind of problems are you guys having?
even without the driver it was alright but with the driver its really smooth -
just to clarify, I'm using a 1xxx series envy 15. Was the hardware changed on the 3xxx model?
-

same here - I have 2nd gen 1XXXX and it took some tweaking but now I love the touchpad.
If you enable Momentum Glide and set up a top right corner Tap Zone for Right Click, with Tap anywhere else for Left Click and double finger scrolling, you should be golden. -
Seriously. There's an idea. Why doesn't one PC company hire some software engineer to design good touchpad drivers that will apply to all notebooks with similar or identically sized/shaped touchpads and make it customizable so that the other engineers can tweak it to apply to different notebook lines?
Promise that software engineer or engineering team a generous bonus or paid leave or SOMETHING. Some dude on NBR forums named reil who had limited experience in C++ coding (or whatever you call it) was able to go pretty far in using open-source software from Google to make butter-smooth two-finger scrolling and two-finger right-click possible for the Envy 14. Yeah, admittedly it wasn't really touchpad driver software he was designing, but more so complementary software that works alongside Synaptics drivers for the Envy 14. In fact...check this: The two-finger right-click feature proved to be more reliable and usable than on the typical Macbook Pro!!!
I offered to donate a small lump sum of cash if he were to perfect inertial scrolling, but he declined as he was finding he had little time remaining to continue the project.

I'll believe it when I see smooth Windows touchpads on the mass market and not just in demo vids. Synaptics has been making demo videos for multitouch touchpads for years with nothing to show for it. Last I checked, their share prices were taking a nice drive. Apparently they have idealists in their management, but no executors. -
I had the opportunity to check out the 3xxx series envy 15 today at the store. The build quality feels very nice. Can anyone comment on the amount of metal used on the body compared to the 1xxx series, or envy 14 (old edition)?
I believe the 1xxx and envy 13 are nearly all aluminum bodies, while the old envy 14 is only partially aluminum.
Touchpad on the 3xxx seemed a bit better, but obviously no software to check it out on past IE.
