I think the release is going to be this weekend. The last-gen dv6tSE price dropped $50 and now it is only available with quad-core processors. I don't think HP is going to want to keep quad-cores as the only option for long.

Well I can attest that there is an absolutely HUGE difference between a 720qm and the 2720qm ... with the 2720qm approaching the 940qm ... at least for what I am doing. The dv6tqe I ordered 02Mar arrived yesterday, and I decided to just keep it (I think). The price was okay and nothing as it stands is a deal breaker. It does get hot ... the max single core temp I have seen has been 82c (BTW, "CoolSense" is just software, and included on this model too). The touchpad buttons are basically worthless, but I use a mouse anyway. The right hand keyboard column is different from my other laptop keyboard, so needs to be got use to. USB 3.0 would be nice ... but may have gone unused anyway. It is certainly the fastest laptop that I have ever had my hands on. Whether the new version was worth the wait is hard to tell, but in any case, I can't imagine any reasonable person being disappointed, whatever your decision.

I wonder when I will get my notification e-mail. When the new DV6 SE's were first announced, I signed up for a notification e-mail. (It was their way of "reserving" one.) Possibly by Christmas time? Hehehe.

The 6770M will likely be faster than the 5850M that the current Envy 17 sports. Before you freak out and say no way, look for yourself.
The 5850M in the Envy 17 has been reported to be clocked at 500Mhz core, along with 900Mhz GDDR5 at 128 bit interface. This is a significantly downclocked 5770 (850 Core) Desktop Card. Go look at the benchmarks for the 5770 Desktop card and multiply by .6 (remember, 500Mhz versus 850Mhz). Write it down.
The 6770M is as reported thus far (725 Core, 900Mhz 128-bit GDDR5) is pretty much exactly a 6850 cut in half. You do not need to make adjustments for the clock speed, so simply go find the same benchmark for the 6850 and divide by 2. Write it down.
Compare those two numbers. Some of this is theory based on extrapoliation, but it is very sound and logical. Look at the new Macbook. It has a slower clocked 6750M which is only 4% slower than the average speed of the 5850M (the 650Mhz version, not 500Mhz that the Envy17 has).
I have no doubts that the 6770M will trade blows with a standard clocked 5850M (650Mhz) and will in most cases beat out the 5850M found in the Envy 17.
So if the DV6/7 end up getting the 6770M, it will basically be the performance of the 5850M in the Envy17 without the insane TDP.
Edit ** Fixed a mistake that was pointed out. Also, multiply by .7 instead of .6 if you want to account for imperfect scaling. Fermi tends to scale 1:1, or close to it, but Cypress doesn't, so to account for it, .7 would be fine. In the case of the 500Mhz clocked 5850, it will not make a huge difference, the revised Whistler is still going to outperform it in most cases while consuming less power. -
guys, my DV7 been lagging since ive gotten it (jan 22). like stuttering when playing music or videos, which is crazy because i have 8 gigs of ram. im guessing im the only one, since you guys praise your laptops, is it just me or do you guys experience them same slow down? hopefully, ill contact hp on monday to get a refund
this is really pissing me off. my 5 year old sony vaio pc with 1.5 gb of ram doesnt even lag, (using the same programs and playing the same files on win 7) this is just crazy for my laptop to lag like this -
Has the backlit keyboard issue been settled on the DV6? Go or no go?
Thanks! -
-
Also, you're assuming perfect core scaling, which isn't the case in the real world. -

the one feature i would actually like to see is a dual-band card. no one has actually mentioned this
but i find it annoying that i can't connect to a 5.0 GHz frequency which effectively cuts my internet speed in half where i am in the house
the backlit options aren't too important to me, as they are mostly just aesthetics, same for 1080p.
nothing's really a dealbreaker at this point, i'm going to get whatever dv7 comes out when it does. -
As the dv6/dv7 hp flyers previously posted before, it would not have a dual band wireless card indicated by the bgn label.
Of course, that doesn't stop you to add your own. -
Well, they aren't out yet, which probably means that today isn't the day. Next week probably is, however.

GUYS... It has arrived.

The configuration I want comes out to a reasonable $1050, and build date is March 25, which means you'll get it in April.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
i use my pc for modelling simulation power, so im really dumb when it comes to graphic cards. can anyone tell me the difference between 6770m and 6490m?

$300 off coupon still work for the new dv6t quad

I love being wrong.
Sad that there's no dv4, though...
No mention of switchable graphics. This worries me...
@dn00: Technically, the GTX 460M is, since the M15x has Optimus with it, I believe. We also don't know how the GT 555M compares to the 6770M. We also don't know if HP underclocked the 6770M, and I have a feeling that they did...
lol........................................
EDIT: Wait, they come out less than six minutes after I checked and didn't see them? xD -
So disappointing....all this time waiting and not even a backlit keyboard. I'm not surprised at all about that and the fact that there is no 1080p.
These two things aside, this is still a great deal on a powerhouse of a laptop with a nice design. I just built an almost identical system to what I have now and with my $500 coupon it would only be just over $800!
I guess I can order my Sager now. -

so here I sit with the old model delivered on Friday. The price of everything is basically the same, with the exception of no backlit keyboard. They actually lowered with the 2720 and 2820 upgrade costs. I am NOT so sure if I like the idea of numeric keypad on the left... another keysize form factor to get use to. They DID get rid of the lefthand column that has me hitting the 'calculator' for 'crtl' and 'print' for 'shift'... but also moved the editting keys ('home', 'delete', etc) from the right... which is NOT good for me.
The old model keyboard layout is closer to my other laptop... which is better. decisions... decisions... -
Dang, was really hoping for the backlit keyboard and touch screen option. Now I'm not sure what to do, wait for the Envy 14 refresh or go with ASUS.
Also the 160GB SSD upgrade seems to be a bit of a ripoff. That looks like Intel's previous generation SSD and not the new SATA III version. For the same price you could get the new version and install it yourself netting yourself a better SSD and an extra 750GB HDD. -
I am disappointed that they took a step backward to not have the backlit keyboard or the touchscreen. The touchscreen was the reason I was looking at the DV6 to begin with.
Now I need to decide if I want to go with this version or look at comparable models from other manufacturers (since the unique touchscreen is gone). :-( -
-
Wow, no touchscreen or backlit keyboard?!?!
Looks like I will hang on to my current laptop until the end up April, then send the it back for a refund and go with another brand.
HP....this was a really dumb move. -
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
Does anyone think there will be a battery difference between the Quad Edition and Select Edition? HP gives a 5.5h estimate for both so I assume they would be close. With the $300 off the QE, they are the same price so I am probably gonna get the QE.
-
Somebody please explain to me the fascination with a touchscreen on a laptop? My screen gets all splattered up, all on its own... -
Wow.... the moment has arrived. Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised at no HD or Backlit since, well, if they did that, who would buy the Envy right? But, I'm most disappointed by the lack of an infinity display and no switchable graphics, but hey, if they really got it up to like 6+ or 9+ hours of battery life now, that is still better than last-gen dv7s, switchable graphics or not. So, I was wondering if anybody has been able to finagle HP into honoring the prices they got on their canceled Sandy Bridges for the new models. And I guess, in general, just wondering, now that it's here, is everybody taking the plunge and buying the new model?
-
P.S., Just a sidenote. Uh.. did all the manufacturers decide to get together and choose March 13th as the release date? Sony and Toshiba released their Sandy Bridges today too. So weird that they chose March 13th.

Wonder why there is no new DV7 select edition?
They are still showing the old DV7 for select edition. ahhhhh!

For me this neglected feature ranks higher than no 1080p and backlit keyboard.
No 1080p is a real short second place though! -
-
With an updated trackpad, I can live without the touchscreen...but the back-lit keyboard might be the deal breaker.
--------------
So....this new system has a back-lit track pad....but not a back-lit keyboard? Could HP really be that dumb? -
Hey everyone. First time post at this forum, but I've been lurking around for a little bit.
Does anyone have any experience with how HP processes exchanges?
I ordered the previous revision of the dv6tqe and I'm still waiting for it to arrive (eta is this week). I already contacted HP and they told me that I have to wait until I have the product in my hands before an exchange can be processed.
I am just asking because I want to make sure I can get the new revision with the current promotional savings that can be had.
Anyone familiar with how the aluminum chassis in dark umber color (metal) looks like in person? I found this article - Hands-on: Slick HP Pavilion dv6 and dv7 Sport Brushed Aluminum Designs, Beats Audio with Quad Speakers, but it's from early February.
I'm not the biggest fan of the chassis color nor the lose in the backlit keyboard option, but the remainder of the revisions is the real reason why I want the new revision. Clickable trackpad buttons, 6770M graphics, improved keyboard layout, improved speakers, USB 3.0, etc. -
does anyone know if the dv7tqe's are "new" as well ? meaning usb 3.0, etc. etc.... thanks everyone.

Comes out to $909 after taxes. I really would like to wait for the dv4 or a comparable 14'' but I can't be without a laptop for too long. Besides, if this gets here around the 25th I would only have been without one for a couple of days and I would have until almost mid-April to return it if something better comes along. -
-
1) I thought it was neat.
2) Found it innovative and easier to use than the pad.
3) I am used to using a touch screen at work, so thought it was a good match.
I guess I will look around. If I find a coupon code come out in the next few weeks, I might jump on it. The lack of switchable graphics makes me leary of battery life, though. -
Say, there is a 2nd button next to the power button. You can see it if you zoom in on the keyboard on the HP sight (and also on the preview video). Anyone have any clue what the button is? It is right above the 4 key...

That is true. HP does tend to lower the clocks, which would be a real bummer. If this thing was supposed to be at 725 core clock, and they bring it down to 500 or so, that will really stink. I was all set to order and when I did they said they had some problem with my credit card.
Watch out - If you apply coupon code and make a typo in the cc information, it will tell you that you have a mistake in your cc information and then REMOVE the coupon code... I caught it, applied the coupon code again and tried to place the order with two cc, but they reported a problem. Doesn't matter, that just means I will wait this one out to see what they did with the 6770M. -
Decent price (with coupon) for what it is but the lack of 1080p and backlit keyboard won't make me buy an envy, it'll make me buy a Dell or Sony most likely.

I won't spend an extra $700 for a back-lit keyboard. I'll just go to another brand...
I really have to think about this.... -
They got rid of the touchscreen and backlit keyboard. I have officially now lost all interest in this laptop.
-
