I install the ATI Catalyst 11.10 WHQL (XP-32 bits) , but the Catalyst center don't let me set the correct refresh rate that I supposed to use (75hz).

I'm doing anything wrong? I install the new driver previously cleared with CCleaner the old driver.

For those that play BF3: go to where bf3.exe is located, create a text file, rename and change the extension to user.cfg, then paste these commands in:

    WorldRender.SpotLightShadowmapResolution 256
    RenderDevice.TrippleBufferingEnable 0
    RenderDevice.ForceRenderAheadLimit 1
    Render.DrawFps 1
    WorldRender.FxaaEnable 0
    WorldRender.DxDeferredCsPathEnable 0
    RenderDevice.Dx11Enable 0
    Render.PerfOverlayEnable 0
    PostProcess.DynamicAOEnable 0

    -----------------------------------------------------
It will automatically load these commands when you enter the game, you don't have to retype it everytime. And I'm getting 50 FPS playing Conques Large in Caspian Border (Texture Mediumm, Effect Medium, Terrain Quality Medium, AA Post Medium, AF 8x)

    Hey Guys,
I recently got the dreaded "blank screen" on startup - even after doing a hard reset, my envy wouldn't start! Ahhhh!! On the HP site it recommends using just their drivers....and I think that there might be a reason why they say this. I know that so far I'm only one person with this issue...but it's quite scary when your laptop won't even post BIOS...
    Any ideas?

If you can't even get past the bios, then the drivers are not going to be the issue - they're loaded with windows and the worst that can happen with bad drivers is a bsod/corrupt windows install. This sounds like a motherboard or cpu issue, I'm afraid to say :(

But I think that there's a chance that the drivers have changed the operation of the graphics card and caused overheating/melting ultimately leading to the problem I'm now experiencing. Obviously I can't be sure, but a google of my problem shows that HP acknowledge that I should use their drivers (and also flash to the latest BIOS) to fix the problem...not that that's worked (I think something more permanent, hardware related, has occured...)

It's plausible... though i doubt that any overheating is caused by the driver, bearing in mind clock speeds and voltages are not set by the driver, but by HP/ATI in the bios - unless you've decided to overclock, but even then the GPU has a thermal cut-off point, which would act to prevent damage to the chip. Are you under warranty?

True, all as I have looked at the advanced bios. When either GPU or CPU reaches 100 Celsius, it will shut off.

the 11.10 driver keeps the fan always on at a real high speed, i resolved it by turning off fan always on, and it stoped and temp is stable at 45 50 C
im using to monitor gpu temp GPU Observer and works fine and bf3 runs correct in high settings on my envy 15 (1600x900)

I don't think I'm under warranty....got the laptop on eBay anyway....not going to do that again....
From googling my problem, it looks like a lot of people have had this blank screen issue, and it looks like it's a graphics issue. My fans startup, and after 10 minutes of "warming up" I can boot and things seem stable. I'm even running furmark to heat the card up and it seems stable for long periods at 74/75 degrees. Ultimately, though, I can't have a laptop that's not reliable...so unless I can fix it...that's that :-( I've opened it up, even thought I'd fixed it by tightening the plate that sits on the graphics chip, but there's nothing obviously wrong under there to my eyes. I don't really want to pay for a repair, as that'll be a new graphics chip (pobably a few hundred ££ plus labour) and I don't know whether the problem will come back because whatever caused it will just do so again. So it's going for parts on ebay.

Sorry, to post off topic. I just thought that the new drivers might have changed something. Incidentally, I can't change my fan speed on ATI tray tools (it can't find the fan) and also FurMark displays a 0% fan speed (when quite audibly the graphics fan is churning away) and the temp reads 75 degrees...how did you guys change the fan speeds?

Try uninstall ATI software with ATI setupp. Remove driver in device manager. Run DriverSweeper or ATIman to remove the rest. Run CCleaner or registry optimizer of your choice to remove any other registry entries left over. Restart let the machine updates back to HP driver itself. Install latest driver here, reinstall DX11
    :)

@wild05kid - you might want to think about editing your second post to make the procedure clearer to first time users. You need to make it explicitly clear that you need the HP drivers. Forget this stuff about driver cleaner (or make it optional - i don't use it and it works fine). But the HP drivers are essential.

    1. Uninstall the current driver
    2. Install latest official HP drivers

Thanks a lot, it worked for me with 11.11a Performance WHQL on Win 7 x64.
    Steps i followed:
    1) clean install of win 7 x64 ultimate, didn't set up network connection to avoid any update
    2) installed latest catalyst suite and drivers, 8.712.0, released on 2010-04-30
    3) restarted the pc, uninstalled catalyst suite - but NOT the drivers
    4) Installed the 11.11a Performance WHQL driver with the patched .INF as per instructions

    Worked like a charm.
Thanks a lot, I was getting quite annoyed....

Oh yeah much better man. 10-15 fps increase in bf3 (1366x768, everything high, aa 0, af 16x, motion blur off, fxaa off, getting about 50-80 in broad maps, 30-50 in high details maps like metro) . It's running cooler (with HT disabled and I applied the mx-4 on the ridges of the cpu and the gpu). The GPU fan kicks in quickly but then it's not hot air coming out.. I have no idea.

If you cobsider upgrade the gpu , I can recommend you the vendor I got it from. Good deal imo. As for BF3, we really need to find a sweet spot in the in-game setting and Catalyst setting. I have mixed and matched, for some settings in game, high to low makes no difference. I haven't got the time to figured out... If you want sharper image and better fps (2-4 gain), try the fxaa command. I personally likes it better than blurry smooth edges

    i think i missed something.

Just to clarify. Did you upgrade the 4830 GPU to a 5830? in a 1st Gen Envy 15?

If so i'd like to ask for more details on this, eg. cost, source, gains etc

Maybe a new thread should be better?

Yeah I did an upgrade due to motherboard failure. I got the motherboard from http://lhc.en.alibaba.com/ . It offers the best price on the market (200$ incl 5 days shipping guaranteed), they are really nice. You get USB 3.0 and dx-11 capable gpu. Pretty much all :)

Yeah it's a mobo swap thebranded. Yes you can remove your i7 and put it back. It's very simple, trust me, will take you less than an hour (including cleaning up the laptop for better air ventilation.. applying new thermal paste-great opportunity to do this- ). It's really up to you, I had to swap due to failure, but beside that I get dx-11 capable card, it's way better than 4830 imo, and USB 3.0, in daily usage you will only notice a slight gain. And the whole machine runs cooler with my settings (HT off, auto low gpu clock). Most of the time when I play BF3, the gpu fan only blows "cool" air.

By the way, do you find 8GB of ram snappier ? I'm considering getting one more stick, 4x 2GB (I never utilize all of it but I feel that last slot is being waste :p)...

p.s : I was lucky enough to boot up windows 7 with my settings after the swap..

Can some1 pls upload a 8.712 version of the driver?
I mistakenly deleted the current driver, and couldnt make the "let windows update it to 8.712" work :(. There is no "Display Adapter" tab in my Device Manager, so I cant let it install automatically. And HP's link to download the 8.712 seems to be broken.

ah i see.. hmmm might consider it. laptop running great, but gets awfully hot i'll get about 80c+ on all cores at times.... (laptop is raised 10cm of table and has a 120mm fan under it blow up)

gpu and heat is the main reason is see to swap. USB 3 well i dont have any USB3 devices.

i have yet to try your drivers guide though so will give that a go first.

As for 8gb, mine came with 8gb so i can not say if its snappier than 6 or 4. i run a number of virtual machines at the same time though and each takes about 2gb.

From what i hear ram above 4gb is not worth it for performance-wise unless you are running applications/games that require it. Also it will get warmer. i can can easilly say where the ram sticks are cause of the heat spots onthe keyboard

@ thebranded oh man :(. Thanks for your response. For your heat problem. Try disable HT with modified bios. I think it will help the left palm rest heat issue (but that'd be a disadvantage with HT off because you're running virtua machines I suppose). By the way if you have the battery on in that position, remove it, it's bad and it traps air..

@stduc53: you can go over this thread and download it (in the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830 / 5730 / 5830 section, the first download), just install with device manager if you can (no need for the software)

Hi there, I am new to the forums and i came across this topic due to my HP envy 15 continually crashing with the new drivers.

Just to be sure, after i have replaced the INF file manually and gone through the update driver stage after "next", when it says:
"Then finally run the setup (untick update Driver)",
does this mean the application named "setup" in the same ATI file? or the current install of the ATI drivers once you have linked the CH129213.inf file.

Thanks for any help, really wanna resolve this issue :)

Thanks again for all the help :) Unfortunately the only problem remaining is after all of these corrections in the setup and everything is good to go, I still get the odd message saying "Display adapter has stopped working" (for example i am watching a youtube video and the screen goes green). Any way around this?
    Thanks

Sounds like the gpu got lazy and it underclock itself. In CCC, turn powerplay to performance. If it doesnt help, try manually set the clock with amdclocktool ((first post)
