You can't upgrade the display, you can't upgrade the gpu, and you can't upgrade to a backlit keyboard. But you can upgrade to an SSD later. Get the Envy 14 and when you have enough funds upgrade to an SSd. I think long term you'd be much happier with an Envy 14.

Queston tho.. This is the first time I've spent more than 50 online.. Is HP pretty good with online orders and such? Is there 'order status' accurate?

It was suppose to arrive on the 15th, which is a day before I leave town for the trip I bought this device for.

Seems to be one thing after another.

 

I didn't get a delay email, and I was told by an HP rep yesterday that it was clearing customs, but then was told today that they won't know what's going on until Monday. Lolwut? Anyone know what the moral of this story is?

 

HP reps have numbered 12-sided dice that are rolled upon calls from consumers to create responses?

Or maybe it didn't clear customs. HP may be a huge drug trafficker. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.

i5-430m, ship date was July 9th and I've been getting the runaround all weekend.

 

i5-520M, 500GB HD, 8GB RAM.

I ordered mine around midnight between the 27th and 28th. Original ship date was the 8th (which is what the bloody HP site still says), delayed to the 12th or 10 business days after the original date.

Doubt we'll figure anything out but cheers to you if you can. Hope this helps.

How does AmEx's +1 yr additional warranty work? Do I have to buy a warranty from HP to have that +1, or is it automatic ? And how do I "redeem" it, or get documentation, etc.? Please advise thanks!

 

Just purchase it on your AMEX, I'd save the receipt saying you've done it. You can google AMEX extended warranty if you're super worried about it.

 

Pulled the trigger on mine tonight so I can hopefully have it before school starts since there will probably be delays. Kept it stock except for the 450m and 500GB. Also noticed that it change my info on my HPA account to my parent's since I used their credit card, hopefully that doesn't cause any issues.

Side note: I know Squaretrade gives you 30 days from purchase to buy a warranty with accidental damage, in the event that it takes longer than that (really hope that doesnt happen) do you think I would be able to get them to budge on that if I call them and explain that it was delayed in the factory?

the thing is, i'm going off to college and i'm majoring in engineering most-likely (don't know which one yet), and being as frugal as i am, i know i won't spend to upgrade to an ssd later on. i think i might be happier with the envy 14, but then if i have the dm4t with the ssd, i might be giddy about the performance all the time. i don't know....

anyone want to help convince me more to stay on the e14 boat?

 

Time is running out on getting one of these before I leave for college, so I'm going to order one soon.

I noticed that people who ordered the sleeve accessory got theirs shipped pretty much immediately. But I'm currently overseas at the moment, intending to order here just in time for it to arrive at my home when I return. Is there a way to ensure that the accessory and the laptop itself ship together?

I bet if you order now HP will get their supply chain figured out soon enough that your order would ship on time, which means you can buy the laptop now then on your ship date call and say you forgot to order the sleeve and have them price match the cost of getting it as an add-on in the laptop configuration? Maybe if you call by phone they'd do that for you automatically.

 

It's shipped through Fedex, I thought? I don't know how long they'd hold it, and even then it'd be an hour long trip just to retrieve it from them.

I get back around early August, which seems to me a reasonable time to expect the laptop. But I don't know if they'd hold the sleeve for three weeks.

Looks like a good config! I debated getting a second battery myself (the slice is ridiculously over-priced); now I'm thinking I should have gotten it.

But yeah, I'm not sure they'd hold it for 3 weeks either. My delivery notice said they'd send it back after a while, but it didn't say how long. I picked mine up after four days. Maybe you could call FedEx and ask? Or call the Post Office it would be at and ask? But then your phone bill might negate the savings on the sleeve!

Or maybe you know someone you could send it to? I'm stumped.

 

If the package requires a signature and you have a FedEx Kinkos you could track it online and when it comes up as a missed delivery, you might be able to have them hold it at will call for you. Although I don't know if FedEx will hold packages there or for how long, don't really have much experience with FedEx as I've only had stuff held at the UPS store for a couple of days.

 

You could try ordering over the phone and requesting HP delay the shipment on the sleeve - I don't know if they can do that, but it's worth a shot.

 

It's the 12th people! Hopefully it'll ship today. :S

Wow, I added my Asus in and I think its just a little on the big side. Kind of.

 

Yeah, my Inspiron 1420 looks huge next to those ones - sure, it's narrower, but it's much thicker, and the 16x10 aspect ratio makes it notably deeper than any of the others. Thanks to the better ratio of computer size to screen size (lots of empty space surrounding the Inspiron's screen), the Envy actually has a smaller footprint - 14x9.3 vs. 13.1x10.3 - in spite of its larger screen. Yes, wider, but smaller overall..

 

The 12th is the original ship-by date I received when I ordered it, so we'll see soon if they're shipping things on time yet.

Odds are I'm just going to keep this one for two weeks since I've got two international trips in that time, then I'll return it and reorder with one of the SSD's, depending upon which model the 256GB is.

 

The world cup is over now. The FedEx workers need to get back to work and send us our laptops!

Of the people who are still in the "picked up" stage, has anyone noticed that their delivery date was delayed? When my shipment was first picked up by the Shanghai FedEx, it was scheduled to be delivered on July 14th. Now it's the 15th. I need it before the 16th, so pleeeease let it be on time for once in this whole process.

I was going to order it as well until I read some reviews that stated the owner did not receive their laptops back right away. In fact it took around 3-4 months because of all the legal procedures. I'm trying to find the link where I found these reviews. Anyway as a college student I don't think I could wait that long for it to be returned. I think I'll buy insurance instead, which replaces your laptop if it is stolen.

 

Mine has always been the 15th by 4:30pm.

Just got a tracking # for my Jun 28th order. Supposed to ship the 8th, delayed to the 12th. No info yet though. Prob wont be able to play w it for 3 weeks though since I needed it before the 15th for a trip.
