Definitely worth it, imo. The K325 destroys any Atom, the ATI4225 is gonna outperform Ion, and the dm1z has better battery life, Windows 7 x64, and a bigger hard drive. I'm thinking of getting one myself.

*Important correction*
It is possible to use student account and bing cashback. you have to log into hp's website as a student in one tab. In a new tab you search hp in bing. In this way you can use the HPA account and the bing cashback. I just ordered my laptop with a i7 720, 3 yr warranty, 320gb hdd and 2 batteries and I paid $1909.28 originally. I used the $10 discount before this. I then got $527.31 back from microsoft. thus I paid $1381.97. It is possible.

 

10.4 has been a nice improvement for me. 10.5 was pants. Though 10.6 was Ok but found 10.4 to be better.

But then I don't game on the notebook that has ATI on it. The higher drivers address game specific issues.

 

Does anyone has any experience about BCB and student discount? Can these two discounts combined? If so what is the best way to do this?

As a side note, the BCB 30% off expired yesterday before I could call HP about it. (I was at work at the time) But, Since its back up again today, I called and got an even $200 credit, on top of two additional credits for $25 and $50 they have already processed for me.

Quick question. Between the i5-450m and the i5-520m (I understand the differences)... when will the turbo boost actually kick and is .33ghz really significant at all when playing a game for example?

It might be noticable in processor heavy games say like WoW, but even then the difference wouldn't be a huge one. We're talking 2-5 frames better maybe.

Now a bigger jump like 800 MHz is certainly noticable.

Alright guys, you made me do it. I now have 2 HP Envy 14s coming my way.
The first (ordered June 28) has 4 gigs of ram 1 dimm, 500 gb HDD, lojack
The second (ordered today) has 8 gigs of ram, 500 gb HDD, and lojack.

The second was cheaper, with the BCB, even after negotiating. I hope it all goes smoothly.

should I open the first to test it out? (it'll be here friday) or wait until the one I'm keeping comes?

 

why 8 gigs of ram? you should have just left it at 4 and got an SSD.

Using IE with default settings,

Yeah, definitely considering it. $361 for a K325, ATI4225, 320GB 7200RPM, 2GB DDR3, plus Win7. I was going to put in my own Win7 (TechNet) in the Mini, but I figured I'll probably try to resell it in a year or so, and by then nobody will want XP. Question is if 30% BCB will last at least until early tomorrow morning when my money will be cleared and deposited in my bank account. Stupid bank holds. Guess that's what happens when you deposit a $20,000 check. lol.

 

My guess is that it will handle everything just swell on high/ultra except for Dalaran. You can't get good fps in that place even if you had four gtx480s and a core i9 CPU from the future. You'll also probably have to turn down shadows as those are also limited by the engine.

I can't speak for the new expansion however. Dunno how many resources the new water engine will require, but if I had to guess it would be just fine.

I need to 3dmark my desktop so I have a decent point of reference, but I have an old e6400 core 2 duo overclocked to 2.7 ghz and a gtx 275 and I'm not worried about the expansion at all. How that compares to the 5650 though, I'm not entirely sure.

 

Do any of you know what kind of SSD that HP is using for the Envy?

 

I called that same number but they just won;t give me $200 dollars because that exceeds 10%. The $140 that I got was already pushing it. Did you purchase with an academic discount?

 

Get an SSD bro, 4 GB of extra RAM is less of a performance booster than a 160 GB SSD->trust me.

meh, the idea of it just seemed good. I need more HDD space than a SDD has anyway. Besides, I look at desktops now and see 4-8 gigs is standard. That'll be the new 2 gigs by next year for laptops.

Yeah, if you know you need a decent amount of storage, 160GB doesn't make sense. I'm so happy the 30% BCB came along though so I could get the 256GB SSD. It's still $400 extra after discounts, but here's hoping it will be a $400 well spent. Can't beat the price considering any 256GB SSD new will cost almost twice that.

Apparently Intel for 160GB. Most likely G2, but who knows.

Someone earlier got a quasi-confirmation that the 256 GB was the Western Digital, which isn't the fastest or the best but pretty darn good, especially considering the cost. Although HP is reluctant to confirm that SSD 100%.

 

Probably not. My reasoning was that I spent more on the laptop with 4 gigs, so I might as well take advantage of this offer to max it out. I need more space for music and pictures than a SDD would provide (college student, want it on laptop and a backup drive), so I figured I'd just go for it. If I wern't a member of this forum, I'd have a much more expensive laptop with less power. I'd never heard of BCB until a few weeks ago when I joined..

edit-I don't think the 6 over 4 is worth it. My original plan was to just get 4 1 dimm and add another stick in a few years to make it 8. That said, I'd either get the 4 gig 1 dimm or the 8. Getting the 8 now just saved a little hassle later down the road.

What you can do is wait a few minutes and if nothing shows up on your Bing CB account you can redo the order and cancel the old one
