Same here. 90% of my friends have a MBP and always 'encourage' me to get one.

But all 90% of them don't even know what overclocking is. Ya know what I mean?

People buy into steve jobs lies and manipulate people into thinking it's the best thing out there, and it might be - build wise. But my other lappys lasted me 3 years so what's the difference besides looks?

Shoot my dad still has an old Sony vail with a pentium 4 from almost 8 years ago and it still runs good!

I guess people just don't know what really happens inside a computer, and those are the same people who would buy a 300 pair of jeans when a 50 pair of levis fiits a feels the same and looks just as good. I mean just because I don't have glitter on the a$@ pocket doesn't make it any better. Ya know!?

Now let's look at some figures:
HP normal profit margin is 15-23% (rounded to 19%)
Now, imagine the same exact hardware in a Apple, give it an apple price and do the simple math.

As in, say HP laptop A total cost is 1000$
Lets multiply 1000x.19 and we get 190$ profit.
that same apple laptop would cost for example 1800$

We would subtract first 190 from the 1000$ HP laptop A and end up with 810$

now divide 1800 by 810 and we get .45, or 45% profit margin.

So we can deduct apple goal is 50% profit margin but realistically they make between 35 and 50% profit margin, or 42.5% profit on average.

all guesstimates and educated guess based of course.

So on average it cost about 1/3 (sometime even 1/4 OR LOWER!! on some apple products) retail price to manufacture a mbp vs about 2/3 - 3/4 retail price to manufacture an hp.

Why people spend so much money on a MBP? Well it's the name of coarse!
I'll admit tho steve jobs does market well, very well.

But anyways enough rambling and going everywhere.

i say Eff Apple, my Envy 14 (soon to arrive) will kick the MBP's (in terms of specs, but sadly not battery life). However, I will be spending $500 less than they are. That means more $$$ to spend on booze :d

Topic wise, my Envy (est. shipping 7/22) has still not been updated yet. This constant refreshing is making me miserable. *prays that it will be at my door Tuesday morning*

 

Same same. I hate seeing people fall for the Apple scheme... They also begin to support Apple like crazy when they get one because they think it can't be beat. The only thing that I like about Macs are their aesthetics, they're beautiful, but not worth the 30-40% profit for them.

I'm still waiting for mine to update from "in production" to "shipping" too. Hopefully it doesn't get delayed still and I haven't gotten an email yet..

I, too, agree with a lot of what's been said here! (though I don't know anything about Apple's production costs. I suspect they might be a bit higher than some think)

What bugs me most about Apple - actually what creeps me out most - is the marketing image, the idea of the "Apple Experience." Remember that 1984-ish Apple advertisement from the early '80s? It's massively ironic to watch it now.

Sorry to any rabid Mac fans out there, but IMHO the only thing anyone should love that much is another person. It is a mass-produced product. Better or worse, it's just a brand, and the computer is just a tool for doing things.

Edit: Has anyone ever visited an Apple store? Creepy! A friend of mine interviewed with a big group for a job there. They only took the psychotically enthusiastic people. They told him he didn't seem exited enough about Apple (he's a rather boisterous fellow).

 

Just called into HP to check on order status, I ordered mine on July 12th (30% bcb baby) with delivery date July 22. . .HP confirmed that it is being shipped out today and should receive a confirmation tracking email later today. . .he also said there were no delays on the envy 14s and tried to sell me a sleeve with 10% discount (i have one so kindly refused).

I'll take it all with a grain of salt, but here's hoping it gets shipped today or tomorrow for delivery early next week to the OC.

I put my 30% bcb order in on the 12th with 5-7 day shipping. It has the 22nd as a ship date and I still haven't gotten any kind of update in order status. It just says they'll provide a tracking number

I picked 5-7 day shipping. I still haven't gotten an email and hp.com still shows "Order in production (Estimated to ship on July 22, 2010) ".

I just called to confirm there were no delays. .. the HP rep said that there systems sometimes lags in updating info (really?!), but said that my laptop is ready to ship and I should get the tracking number later today.

I'll check the tracking number to see what it says once I get it. . .

 

sounds like the same load i got. even though i believe they are already built i doubt they will leave china before the weekend. i sure hope im wrong.

 

well the flight from Shanghai to Anchorage already arrived in Anchorage. So even if it does ship today, it won't be on a plane until at least tomorrow

My ship date is today, and I got 2 day shipping. I'm expecting it Saturday.

 

I'm in the same boat, only I'm not actually expecting it Saturday - with no update yet, I suspect it will be delayed so that it won't come until at least Monday. No harm, though - I'll be camping over the weekend anyway.

 

No matter how crappy or great macs are, they have the best screens around

 

They said 2 day shipping. 2 days from today is Saturday.

I didn't pay $40 for 3 day shipping. If it doesn't arrive in 2 days they are refunding my $40.

Actually 2 business days is Monday, So if it is not here on monday, then I will get my $40 back.

 

I love apple, they force HP & acer & asus to move their asses and produce cool looking PC's for once.
Other than that, the only honest & good thing apple ever produced was the Iphone, not even because it was good but because it wasn't overpriced due to AT&T offers and created competition on the smartphone market, and that's all thanks to the money they made over the Ipods (that were frankly not that good, but the marketing ads got into the heads of people so deep it's funny, iDance, iBeer, iFap...).
Other than that, a non jailbreakable iphone is worthless... And apple is going to prevent any jailbreaking on the future Iphones because a lot of people are starting to do so to not pay the apps. The current guy who broke the ios4 is not even yet wanting to release the jailbreak until apple's next ios update because he fears apple would fix the hole in the prison.
The apple cult in itself is simple "i" it's all about selling products that would make one outstand the others by the looks, once someone feels superior thanks to a "i and only i" product he easily becomes fanatic of the brand, because it's the best, I am the best.
I just wonder, what will happen, once 90% of the people will have an Iphone, the very same ing Iphone with the very same limitations for everybody. Maybe the apple fans will already be in a state of "See I was right its the best, everybody is doing like me !"

Don't get too excited. 2 business days with Saturday delivery for an extra charge. I don't think your 2 days that you paid covers that extra charge. Maybe it does, that would be a nice surprise.

Anyone else noticed the BCB logo seems to be missing now when you search for HP? I had an order in the last 30% deal, but cancelled it as I had buyers remorse not getting the SSD. Now....I'm getting worried that BCB won't show up again for a nice percentage off. I'm sure hoping they give it one last round before the program ends.

 

Good chance you won't see it again if they have already cleared it.

Well, hat what hp rep told me.
I called again this afternoon (because they told me too from the call this morning if nothing changed)

And she asked me my order number and blahblah..

And she said the package left shanghai early yesterday.

I asked her why nothing is showing up under my status on the website.. And she says in takes up 48 hours to update. And she also said once it gets to Memphis I'll get a tracking number.
(which doesn't make any sence since all first batchers were notified the minute it left china)

But oh well, she assured me like 4 times thaty order number isn't in china anymore (it's hard not to take that with a grain of salt.... But....)

But anyways.. If you guy really wantto know where your lappy is, I really do recomend calling.
I guess they have CDO reports and factory reports or something that's far more accurate than the
website..

FTFY. The Envy has higher color gamut and there are business notebooks out there with IPS panels.

Envy 14 is just a recent thing and business IPS notebooks are simply high priced business IPS notebooks. There are no other good options with nice displays. Tell me if there is another 1k notebook that has above average screen?

 

No point in my calling in that case. I'm convinced they'll arrive on time.


That said, I'm going to need to verify with HP later whether I can change my original shipping address if I want to RMA. Pretty sure I can. If I get what I consider a lemon, I'm returning it and requesting they ship the new unit to the nearest FedEx center.

If you're referring to the Macbook Pro 13 vs. the rest, let's make sure the comparison includes like or close to like specs so it's an apples to apples comparison, not apples to oranges. The Macbook Pro 13 manages to pack in a nice TN panel. Great. But you'd be paying $1,000 for a processor I saw back in 2008. That's where the compromise was made.


Also, the Envy 15 is NOT a "recent thing" and has a better screen.

Note: I didn't say Envy 14.

 

Zero updates on shipping despite 7/22 ship date. Does anyone know whether it is possible to call tomorrow and complain to upgrade to 2 day? I need the machine before I travel back to school.

 

Some people are saying that it's already shipped, call HP to see if yours is already on the way.

 

That's what they want you to believe. If I don't get an update by Monday evening, I'm calling though. I'll give them benefit of the doubt.

 

So has anyone found any good coupons for the 14? The only thing I have right now is a student discount, but it's still quite expensive.
