Well unfortunately I guess I don't buy the Envy, the screen was the biggest pulling point for me, a major differentiator from other laptops. Small, light laptop with real estate?
I certainly hope that any refreshes of the 14 or 15 in the future brings back the radiance screen.

It will come back in a few weeks, the question is if you will want to pay $400 for it? HP has pulled this little trick several times already. There was a rumor last month that they would remove it again on the 29th of sept. and gee whiz look what the date is today! So this was planned by HP far in advance, it's not due to any shortages, its a marketing strategy. They probably want to jack the price way up just before thanksgiving and Xmas, so that when they have the holiday sales they don't lose any money when it gets discounted.
-
-
Also, HP said they were looking for a diff. manufacturer to make their Radiance screens. -
EDIT: Just thought I would mention that the guy I talked to, his name was Alan. -
I am probably going to get a vaioZ, it just feels like HP is jerking us around and it makes me mad, I called to ask why the screen was removed and they said they don't know. Then they gave me the old excuse about it being such a popular computer that maybe they ran out of screens, they use that line for everything.
-
-
I REALLY hope it's wrong, because the E14 is pointless without the Radiance screen.
-
Everyone else told me to wait till black friday/ cyber monday.
Ha! -
What is the difference between radiance display and bright view? Is radiance display simply a brighter screen, with more vivid colors?
A google search only turns up "Hp pulling radiance display". -
CantankerousBlowhard Notebook Enthusiast
Brightview: 1366x768 with worse brightness, contrast, colors, etc. Apparently, the Brightview display is still decent quality (better than e.g. cheap Acer displays), but it doesn't stand up to the Radiance.
Personally, anything under 1600x900 resolution is a no-go for me...which means that for the moment, the Envy 14 is joining the vast majority of laptops that simply don't suit my needs. Some people care more about the better contrast, colors, etc., because those aspects of the Radiance display made the Envy 14 more premium and enjoyable to use. I care about that too, but the Brightview's lower resolution is the dealbreaker for me. A 1366x768 laptop is about as useful to me as a two-door coupe is to a family of ten who go everywhere together.
I do think the Radiance display - or something very similar - will return sooner or later, though. HP reps had already claimed to have supply issues on the displays, and there were rumors over a month ago that they were looking for a new supplier. If their supplier actually did go out of business, it was not sudden news to HP this morning. They previously used supply issues (real or fake) and high demand as a justification for their price hikes, and if they sold out anyway, it means they were still profitable items for HP to carry. One way or another, they'd be stupid not to bring the Radiance [or an equivalent display] back to the Envy 14 ASAP. If the Radiance used trade secrets or patented technology (or anything else to prevent duplication), the bankrupt company is likely to sell them to someone else. If worse comes to worse, maybe HP could just bring the DreamColor 2 display to the Envy 14.
-
Radiance display is 350nits, very bright! So you can use it outdoors and not have too much glare. Also it's 1600x900 resolution with a high color gamut, meaning its very sharp and has more detail. I pity a fool that buys an envy without the radiant display, might as well get a lenovo Y460 instead it would be identical specs except for an aluminum case.
-
Just in case anyone missed it, HP told engadget "no comment" on why the radiance display went missing. And confirmed that the envy 13 and 15 are gone for good.

-
Agreed. Was looking to buy one of the 14's with a Radiance display. Really dissapointed that the Radiance Display is gone.
Won't be buying this laptop... -
The price hike from 200-300 stopped me from buying it...now it's done for good.
Dissapointing, hopefully a new manufacturer will step up with a better laptop. If only the envy 15 had a backlit KB! -
ebay has a few for sale with radiance display
-
rumor says HP already did the radiance trick with the Envy 13. i urgently need some proof for this suspicion!! can anybody help me? what was the model number / display name for the radiance display in envy 13?? what was the resolution?? thank you for helping!
-
Hopefully, HP will come back with the Dream Color 2 in the Envy 14. With an I5-580M and 14.5 Dreamcolor FHD 1080p display, the E14 would again be the clear choice in 14 notebooks.

subquestion: it seems that the envy 13 actually IS still available with a good radiance display: Amazon.com: HP ENVY 13-1130NR 13.3-Inch Magnesium Alloy Laptop (Silver): Gateway
so maybe the rumor of HP's "radiance sold out tactics" was planted by people who want to earn high prices for their envy 14 w radiance on ebay?? -
I'm in the middle of an RMA. HP already recieved my old Envy14 and an order for my new Envy14 has already been processed. The old Envy14 had Radiance Display... I wonder what this will mean for my new Envy14. ????

Engadget reported this today:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/29/hp-envy-15-and-envy-14-with-radiance-display-no-longer-available/ -
I sold my iPad and I have been saving for the last 2 months to get the Envy 14... To say that this development is a big let down would be a huge understatement...

i.e. the best laptop display of all time
that would make the envy series one of the best on the market.
If they did though I think they should keep the 1600x900 option. They can add full 1080p as a higher option but the lower res would be better for games with the lower gpu in the 14."
I still think glossy looks better as a coating though (go ahead, hate me). Sharper and crisper. But why not just have options for both?
EDIT:
To the larger topic, don't worry guys, HP is not blind, they know people have interest in the nicer screen. They will almost certainly find a replacement, hopefully by the time the next refresh launches. -
-
Can anybody just please ask them when will it come? Or if it don't comes than what are the alternatives? I'm based outside USA and I Want radiance
-
This laptop's main selling point is the radiance display. I wouldn't think twice about getting an envy 14 without one. I hate the 1368x768 resolution more then colds and you know when you stub your foot, even that ;| meh.
-
However, I am glad that HP made this a very limited release. It's a rare reward for those of us "early adopters" that purchased online on the first day. As I type this on my E14 with simply stunning Radiance display that I've had for 2.5 months now, I still don't see any competition to it in it's class except at much higher price points and don't see anything on the horizon which will change that in the very near future. It makes me giddy to think that while I'm sitting pretty with an amazing all-around machine, other prospective E14 buyers are basically now square out of luck and will likely have to settle for mediocrity. -
-
.
Personally I don't see what the big deal is, everyone I talked to on the subject were of the impression it was more of a novelty than a necessity. Even before noticing they had stopped offering the radiance display I decided it wasn't important and went with the Beats Edition, I don't feel I settled at all. If I need that much more resolution I'll gladly plug my laptop into the 27" 1920 x 1080 monitor I got using the money I saved by not getting the radiance display. When I can't do that the Brightview display is more than capable. -
I harldy count it as a misfortune, the dude/mam is just happy to have a beatifull screen that dosnt come in any other form on any other laptop. I commend getting the nice screen, as its an extra 200 dollars and it no way is a novelty.
-
-
Anyways, hopefully the radiance comes back for the 14 soon, or at least the envy 15 will come back with a new model that has a nice screen. -
swg1251=star wars galaxies? my fav game. Rolf I like what Rampant Speculation had to say.
-
.
It may have been a $200 option originally, when I was pricing them out it was $300. And being a novelty is really a matter of individual opinion. Anything the radiance would be useful for I will be docking my laptop and using a larger/better display. So if I sprung the extra $300 it would be a novelty, simply to say I had it so people could ooooo and aaaaah.
I'm not saying the Radiance isn't a great display, but so is the Brightview. I just feel some people are being a bit rash by claiming the Envy isn't worth buying without the radiance display, it may be the icing on the cake for some people but it certainly shouldn't make or break a deal. -
-
We should start looking else where for the Radiance display, and actually find the part and installing/swapping it in ourselves. First thing is to find what is the supplier's part number on the actual radiance LCD part, then find the name of the supplier (samsung, lg-philips, AU Optronics, Chi Mei, etc) from where it is produced. Using that part number we can also cross reference it to another laptop that uses it or a contact who can direct us to a compatible alternative part. The part number could be found after opening it up.
Many manufacturers get their LCD displays from different suppliers. You can find the same laptops using different LCD displays and vice versa on different laptops using the same LCD displays.
The part listed on HP's service manual for the Envy 14 is 608366-001 but that is HP's part because that is the whole assembly (webcam/mic/cables/etc), I'm talking about just the individual LCD part itself, because the part listed is obviously only available through HP for HP laptops so we have to throw those numbers out. This is what is listed on the fsm:

Anybody see the articles about HP having a hard time placing its manufacturing orders with Taiwaneese companies because their products are so low-margin? Notebook makers reportedly refusing to accept low margin orders from HP, says paper I wonder if that is what happened to the Radiance Display?
Bronsky -
Though interesting and certainly possible I think the article refers to notebook manufacturers as those that make complete systems that are then branded as HPs, Acers, Gateways etc. -
Hp is currently offering a $200off coupon on envy 14 if configured above $1199+.. what does this imply? that without radiance hp is not be able to sell many envys? or they are getting rid of brightview stock?
i was waiting from two months on a good deal at envy and $200 off is the biggest off on envy yet according to my knowledge.. but still i wont purchase it wthout radiance....
Radiance display no longer an option for envy??
