In dynamic mode, that wont work because afterburner can only apply the clocks if the dGPU is turned on.

Fixed mode will definitely use more battery.

I see, I guess I can live with a little lose of battery life, the other question I have is that I'm on Catalyst 12.1, not the 12.1a (preview?) in the guide, is that gonna be a problem? The link to download 12.1a seems to be broken.

    12.1 is fine.

If manual OC'ing is annoying you, can just use one of the musho bios, which wont affect battery life much as the dgpu is either off or in lower pstate when it is idle. (dynamic mode)
And musho bios is definitely less problematic then switching in and out of fixed mode.

I'm thinking about that too, I'll go ahead find out my GPU's best GPU/Mem OC settings and get the appropriate one from him. After flashing his BIOS, can I upgrade CCC to newer versions?

Hey guys, I think my fan is dying its only been 3 mos since I bought this laptop though,my idle temps before were like 40-42 but now it increased 10° and it reaches 90° when im gaming,so I decided to halt games for now til I resolve this issue, theres a message on startup that says:system has detected that a cooling fan is not wkrking properly and so on...my fan still runs but seems a bit louder than it used to be,also it vibrates a little,I tried opening it to see if the fan or vents accumulated dust but theres almost no dust there, cleaned it anyway with cotton buds.is there a fix to this or should I order a replacement fan?

Sure sounds like the fan is in fact dying. It happens. Better this early in the warranty where you can get it fixed for sure.

Alright so I finally took the plunge and Kombustered my OC, it stablized at 780/990, but I decided to take one of the prepaid one at 770/970. Pretty happy with the result as I can now run Dirt 3 at 1366x768 with Ultra details. After I restarted CCC prompted me to upgrade to 12.6, I did, and the installation was never able to finish, I had to restart computer and restore to a restore point I created yesterday. Now I'm kind of back in 12.1, the game still works, but when I ran 3DMark11 it no longer tests the 6700M, only shows 6620G and gave ma a dismal 1500 points, I used to get 1800 points before the OC. I had CFX disabled, and set 3DMark11 to high performance, have no idea what went wrong.

1500 sound normal, 1800 is when you crossfire them, check HT benchmark thread.

It makes sense now since with CFX the score is 1931, what threw me off is in the system info section of 3DMark11 it lists 6620G and 6650M linked. In fact nothing can definitively report the presence of "6750M," even CCC only says "6600M and 6700M series." in the "linked adapter" section. If CFX is disabled then in CCC's hardware information section only 6620G is listed.

You probably will have to send it back to HP for warranty repair, you can request to send it in without the hard drive since the problem is not related to your hard drive. They will test it using their stock hard drive and if they can reproduce the problem then they will replace it.

Never mind, fixed it. Forgot to disable ULPS, now the sliders work. However I'm running into another problem. I set Kombustor to use High Performance under the Switchable Graphics options. When I run the tests, on top it shows the 6620G, however my 6750m temps are rising. I've oc'ed the core from 600 to 620 in increments of 5 and get the same readings. I've even changed it to 580 and it's still the same. Yes it is using Direct3D 11.

Same thing happened to my laptop. I have no warranty. Does anyone know anywhere other than eBay to find a replacement fan for the cooling module?

Currently cooling my laptop with external PC fans, limited the CPU to [email protected] and still reaching temps of 89-90c when doing CPU intensive work.

You can order the fan module from HP parts, but total cost is about $80.

    Hi all,

Sorry to post in this thread but i really need some help with my Asus K53TA notebook which has A6-3400M APU. Last night i closed my laptop as usual and in the morning when i've opened it, something weird happened. My resolution was at 1024x768 instead of 1366x768, so of course i've tried to change it back, but...SURPRISE! I couldn't. The maximum allowed resolution was 1024x768. I've checked Device Manager and i've seen that a small yellow exclamation mark is below the videocard (check 1st attachment).
I am using Windows7 PRO x64, i've uninstalled the drivers (12.4 version) and installed the newest one from AMD's website (12.6) but now i received the 2nd error in device manager (see 2nd attachment). Finally i've managed to install the drivers but for some reason or another my card still remains with the yellow exclamation mark under device manager and when i open Vision Control Center i cannot see any options regarding the video cards as if the driver isn't installed.

I've also tried reinstalling the OS and do a fresh driver install, didn't worked.Same story. Can't change resolution, vision control center show me only CPU options and that's about it. I installed GPU-z and you can see the result of my videocards in 3rd and 4th attachments.

If you have an idea of how to solve this problem, pleeease help me.

Hey guys I'm running Crossfire with the 6750m and 6620g, and I'm curious about games where CF causes performance to drop. I noticed micro-stuttering in Just Cause 2, but after disabling CF it ran great. On the other hand performance greatly increased in Borderlands and Skyrim. Other than Just Cause 2 are there other games where Crossfire is a no-no?

Skyrim is dx9, and I'm pretty sure Borderlands is as well. So you're not getting crossfire in those games either. None of the games I've played have worked well with crossfire, except maybe Battlefield Bad Company 2.

Wow you are right, I even get screen tearing while CF is on in Saints Row 3and Batman Arkham City. I didn't see much of an increase in those games, well that is disappointing.

    damn this is annoying.

my cpu doesn't like undervolt. At first, it seems stable. tested stable too. I ran each pstate with prime95 and intelburntest.
my lowest pstate is 0.775v at 800mhz.
I leave my laptop idle overnight, and I wake up 7 hours later to find that windows is semi frozen. Only the mouse cursor works, but I can't open any programs.

Previously it was at .7375v, but once in a blue moon, it would cause a black screen freeze.

I used to set VID to like lowest possible, but now I just keep them at least 1 or 2 notch higher just because. Just theory crafting, I just make sure the clock dun jump up and down when testing to make sure it is "stable". Sometimes one of the core like to drop 2 pstate even when locked in using k10stat.

I mentioned this on the dv6 llano thread, but thought I would also post it here since it is for optimization.

    I just stuck in G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model F3-1600C10D-16GSQ
    from Newegg.com - G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8G)

It works fine. No out of memory boxes since then. Would have preferred a faster CL but 10-10-10 was the fastest I could find for 2 x 8gbs that were under $100 (the Kingston HyperX's are $160, the G. Skill's were $99 at the time, and the speed wasn't supercritical as much as the size, plus post #90 said the Kingston HyperX's didn't work at ddr3-1600 anyway). Anybody know the best way to check whether I've got 1333 or 1600 in actual operation? It's not critical to me, but it would be nice.

as I mentioned in the dv6 llano thread, the next upgrade is probably going to be an SSD - I have an OCZ agility 3 120gb on hand.

Have not installed the SSD yet, though.

Hi, thanks for the tutorial, I have a question regarding oc-ing ram on a notebook: is it possible? My lappy's (Samsung NP305E7A-A02US X4) bios does not allow for it. I want to see if I can run my pc-8500 ram at pc-10660 speeds. Thank you.

I'm not sure if this is the correct thread for this but I'll give this one a try. I have a dv6z 6135dx that I have been attempting to configure for gaming. I'm having problems running the discrete hd6570m card on an external Samsung LCD TV with Kombustor for stress testing. Every time I attempt to run this configuration to attempt OC testing the display driver crashes within the first 2 minutes after launching kombustor. It works fine on the notebook display for 20+ minutes running kombustor with max temps of 73 deg. The display driver has also crashed a few times while just browsing using the integrated graphics . It seems to be ok running openGL on the notebook and external monitor (ran portal2 for a couple of hours on 6620 with no probs). The problem mainly occurs any time I attempt to do anything with the discrete graphics card on the external monitor, no fun gaming without the 52" Samsung. I'm running the stock HP Win 7,Stock F21 Bios and the Catalyst 12.1a driver package (haven't been able to get anything above 12.1 to run for some reason). Has anyone encountered this or have any ideas? I'm confident the hardware is good because it runs fine on the notebook display. tried everything that i could think of and haven't found anything on this in the forums.can anyone HELP?

Another question, something doesn't make sense here, your up % is lower than your down %, and unless I'm thinking about it the wrong way, that really seems strange. Imagine a CPU going underload.

Starting at P6: cores get loaded 20%, so they move up

to P5: cores continue getting loaded, hits 20%, so they move up

to P4: cores continue getting loaded, hits 20%, so they move up

to P3: cores continue getting loaded, hits 20%, so they move up

to P2: cores continue getting loaded, hits 20%, so they move up

to P1: cores continue getting loaded, hits 20%, so they move up

to P0: cores continue getting loaded, maybe boost kicks in, or they move up to 35% and they drop to P1?!

Suppose they drop to P1, i.e. the cores were previously getting loaded till 35% in P0, the moment they drop to P1, that 35% load @ P0 will certainly be LOWER than whatever load @ P1, hence @ P1, the cores will be over 35% load and drop down to P2, and with the same reasoning, the cores will successively keep dropping down to P6.

    OR SO IT SEEMS

Because when the cores hit 35% load in P0, they drop to > 35%, hence > 20%, load in P1, thus immediately jumping up to P0 again and either boost kicks in, or they hit 35% again, drops to P1, jumps again, boost or 35%, blah blah blah.

It really doesn't make sense to me why anyone would have down % HIGHER than up % for the interval between P(N) and P(N + 1).

Could you please explain the rationale?

Just install CORSAIR CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 DDR3- 2x 8Gb, 1600, SO-DIMM. But it works only in 1333 mhz. Anyone knows how making this memory run at 1600mhz?

Are you running this memory on the A8-3500M or 3510MX? What I would really like to know is will this memory work on the 3500M at full bi-directional speed of 800Mhz? Thx.

Hi I was looking at the upgrades you've done here and have a couple of questions.
    1. I see you've upgraded your APU. What did you upgrade from the 3500M?
    2. Where did you find the upgrade processor?
    3. Will this APU work on the 3500M MOBO?
    4. Did this upgrade work with your Stock F21 Bios?
Thinking about doing this upgrade myself as this will also allow for the 1600Mhz ram memory. My SSD is on its way,I'm hoping that this APU will work with my current MOBO. Thx

Hi, I've been trying to do some overclock testing with MSI Afterburner and Kombuster and for some reason MSI Afterburner doesn't appear to be working. First of all I double checked the guide instructions for set-up and configuration and all seems normal. The problem is that any time I increase the core clock or memory clock values and enter them, the corresponding values don't show up on the graphs. The values on the graphs stay at 600 ad 800 respectively no matter what values I enter in the control panel. Also I'm not seeing any changes in the Kombustor Stress test screen (either display or voltage value for the dGPU). Any OC change entries don't appear to have any effect at all. Has anyone experienced this problem or am I not using the Afterburner program properly? It seems to be pretty straight forward but I haven't had any results from it at all. ??? Can anyone help?

What's the difference between using the Over Drive settings within the AMD Catalyst driver and doing the overclocking using K-10?

Overdrive doesn't let you change the voltage and gives you less options. Don't use overdrive.

    i have a lousyass undervolter.

my lowest pstate stock clocks and voltages are-
    800..... 0.9375
    900..... 0.9625
    1000....0.9875
    1100....1.0125

I undervolted lowest 4 pstates to
    800... 0.775
    900...0.8
    1000... 0.825
    1100...0.85

after 4 days, it semi froze again overnight during idle. I wake up, mouse moves, but can't open anything. Windows unresponsive.

Lousy. seems I won't be able to undervolt more than 0.1 volts, for lousy battery savings.

Test all of the pstates with prime95 or something. That way you can make sure it's stable.

i did. they were all stable at even lower than I had it. 800 @ .7325.

I bumped it up to .775. Tested for a long time too.

just random semi-freezes. Sometimes lasts a couple weeks, this time just 4 days.

Now I have to bump it up to 800 @ .80. Can't undervolt worth jack.

Fixed my laptop. Ordered a new fan from eBay. Shipping took almost a month but once it got here it was an easy fix. Like hell I'm going to pay 80 bucks for a fan but then again I'm cheap.

i was playing with undervolting today, and monitoring battery watts used.

i observed that undervolting doesn't save you much battery juice. At idle, going from 0.9375 to 0.775v lowers the juicing by 0.6x watts, from 10.8 to 10.145w
On my 56whr battery, that amounts to about 25 extra minutes.

lowering to 0.75v and 700mhz did not lower wattage any less.

it's just diminishing returns after that. The lcd, hdd, and wifi all use more power, so undervolting doesn't really help much.
    I guess I can't complain though.

Is it necessary to have the 12.1 drivers to do the GPU overclocking, or if I use the 12.8 works too? I know the post says 12.1 is required but since it's a bit old, I just want to confirm it. Thks!

No you don't have to stick with 12.1, just anythign stable really :D. I used overclocking on 12.4 and 12.6 and they were stable. Haven't tried it on 12.8 yet, but 12.8 seems to be very stable.

I did the overclocking of my GPU and left Prime95 running the Torture Test for about 20 minutes, with P0 on 2.2ghz @1.05 and my GPU @ 740/880. My CPU and GPU temperatures reached 94ºF and 98ºF respectively. Is this a good limit for my temperature?

I'm running the Catalyst 12.8 drivers currently, and have noticed that if I put any application at all under the High Performance profile under Switchable Graphics, it will use the 6750M instead of the APU. Noticed that the left palm rest was heating up while playing Minecraft, which since it is OpenGL, it was supposedly not supposed to be using the 6750M. I checked my frames-per-second and noticed a considerable boost. Can anybody else confirm this? I do remember that the modded BIOS allows you to set it so that you can pick manually which GPU to use and it was demonstrated on an OpenGL test as that normally wouldn't run on the 6750M...

Also, if you are running Catalyst 12.5+ drivers I wouldn't be so concerned about overclocking, as I have better performance with these drivers without overclocking than I did with overclocking on the 12.1a drivers.

As usual, I'd recommend making a system restore point before installing the 12.8 drivers, just in case something goes wrong. It has saved me numerous times on multiple computers. Also don't forget to install the 12.7 CAP3, as it isn't included with the 12.8 drivers! :)

I can confirm this. Mine used to only use 6750m, but it uses both 6620g and 6750m equally now, not much of a performance boost, 30 to 60 fps depending on location.
