wonder if it has an option to turn off "shut off the touchpad while typing"

just because that setting stays with you through reformats.

    so...yeah.

I've tried the "broken" synaptic driver's, Reli's mod, and today the newest Synaptic driver's and can't quite get the solution I'm looking for (I think I'm missing something).

I don't want any advanced features, I want the trackpad to work like an old "traditional" trackpad. I want the bottom portion of the trackpad (below the line) to be just dead space (won't detect touch), it will only used to click (left and right click). Above the line I do want to be able to tap (to select) or double tap (to open files), but I don't need any two finger scrolling, or pinch to zoom or anything like that.

    Suggestions?

I don't believe there are any drivers that allow that.

Have you tried macbook-style clicking yet?

I can't believe my $300 Acer could do this, but my Envy can't.

I haven't tried it. Never used a Mac, so I'm not even sure what the macbook style clicking is. If the option I want isn't available, I guess I may have to learn (though I'd prefer to just have what I'm use to).

Thanks for the reply, appreciate it!

well. if you want to just not use reil's you CAN (with the older ones) set up that advanced palm check area properly and it will not notice your fingers on those buttons until your finger moves farther up (then it'll register stuff down there)

Macbook-style clicking is pressing down ANYWHERE on the trackpad to trigger a click.

    YouTube - ‪MacBook Pro Multitouch Track Pad‬‏

Notice how the guy isn't going to the bottom to click, he's just pressing directly on the surface. That's the main feature/point of these drivers

thanks for the info, folks. i just installed the updated synaptics drivers that eafd mentioned (15.2.20) and i also have reill's envytouchpad installed and running. the problem i'm having is that the "click anywhere on the touchpad" functionality isn't working. it only registers a click when i click on the lower left portion of the touchpad (in the area under the line).

in the synaptics configuration window, there's a radio box for "Tapping" and another for "Clicking." each one has a set of gears next to it for related settings. i'm wondering if maybe i have some setting that's wrong. in the "Tapping" dialog box i have "Tap again and hold" checked on and also the "Enable Tap Zones" is checked on (both are defaults), with the Bottom Left, Bottom Right, and Top Left set to "No zone" and the Top Right set by default to run some program.

for the "Clicking" gear window, it says Left Click is primary button and Right Click is secondary click.

in reill's app, i have all tapping actions disabled.

would appreciate any help possible. the first post in this thread shows the various settings for reill's app, but it doesn't show/describe each of the suggested settings for the latest synaptics driver...so that might be a helpful addition.

Shoot, is the latest one not working?

Better fix that. Try to download the one linked in the original post. Those should get clicking anywhere working, guaranteed.

I'm thinking that installing the latest one over the "broken" ones still allows clicking anywhere, but just installing the latest one doesn't work.

Try to reply ASAP so that I can change the info if need be

    Okay, I've updated the instructions:

    1. Uninstall your current drivers, then install the HP stock ones (for maximum compatibility, you may not need to uninstall)

    2. Install broken ones

    3. Update to latest.

So I decided to go in and play with a new Macbook to compare with my Envy and see if I just don't like that method or if it's my envy.

I actually kinda like the Macbook trackpad, but still pretty much despise my Envy (which is really too bad, because otherwise I love the laptop).

I'm going to try the new instructions you have (install stock, then broken, then new). I'm not sure if my Envy just isn't functioning as it can, or it is just sub-par :-(

It's the latter. My solution? Purchased Logitech VX Nano mouse and fugudaboutit!! I agree it's almost a perfect laptop (w/ the Radiance display) except for the trackpad can't see how HP completely dropped the ball on that one...

I don't know if this is the right place to post this question and sorry in advance if it wasn't... but is there any way to scroll out of focus/background windows for the Envy 14?

I tried using WizMouse and KatMouse, but they don't seem to work with the "broken" Synaptics trackpad drivers. Any advice? Thanks!

Katmouse is working for me with reil's. Are you running reil's with synaptics two finger scroll disabled?

Not at the moment. I was using the Synaptic drivers for the "click anywhere" ability. I can try downloading Reil's program when I get home later though.

Thanks for the quick response btw!

Be warned that if you're using the new updated drivers, sometimes Windows Update tries to downgrade them.
I have version 15.2.16.6 (18/04/2011), Windows Update says the ones from september 2010 (published 01/12/2010) are better.

I followed the instructions but there are 2 issues:

    - My orange light wont turn off (its on but my touchpad is on)

    - My lowerright corner if clicked is STILL a right click.

ALSO, when I try to windows update, it DOES NOT tell me to install the older drivers so I cannot enable the tap to disable (which I assume is the function to turn off the orange light by taping on the upper left corner?)

When I'm using Reil's app with inertial scrolling, there's this weird recoil that occurs after the inertial scrolling ends. It's usually not a problem, but it gets annoying when I have the ability to horizontal scroll. Every time I scroll, there's always a recoil up and then right, even if I reach the end of the page. Anyone else experience this as well?

Other then that, the app is working really well.

Hmm, I don't have that. It scrolls just fine for me, do you have two finger scroll on in Synaptics or any different scroll settings?

I don't think I have any different scroll settings and I do have two finger scroll disabled on Synaptics. I think it might have to do with the sensitivity level of my touchpad. May I ask what your sensitivity levels and palm check levels settings are?

Sensitivity on second and PalmCheck all the way up

Sensitivity has to do with how lightly you need to touch the pad to trigger a touch event, and palm check has to do with well, the palm.

Palm check doesn't really work, and I doubt sensitivity has to do with it though. Do you have the same settings in Reil's?

The scrolling settings are the same as yours from the original post in this thread. I think it must have something to do with the inertial scrolling, as when I disable inertial scrolling, the problem disappears.

It's only an annoyance some of the time; is there a way to disable horizontal scrolling on Reil's app?

Hello i just bought ENvy 14 Pease help me
    My Main Question is :
I want to stop using my MacBook Air and use Envy but am used to scrolling up and down with two fingers and i cant seem to do it on my Envy even when i activated its settings to do so, the synaptics clickpad is V 7.5 the vertical scrolling does NOT work but the horizontal scrolling works, so i enabled the dedicated scrolling place but stil it does NOT work so instead i use page up and page down which is less than convinent and annoying because it over scrolls down, and i know i can scroll by going to the scroll bar but thats annoying, i browse a lot, i cant be moving between the scroll bar ad my content, plus i have tons of pdf books i read
So please is there a solution to this, making it work,

Secondly, i dont want to a dedicated single click and right click i know its integrated into the clickpad but i cant find a way to switch if off, is there a way to do that and use the dedicated areas for normal use?
And if i do so, i would like to enable right clicking by tapping using two fingers like in MacBooks so i use the dedicated button for normal use if i want to single click i use a finger to right click i use double fingers.
Please can someone write a code for me if this is not available

Lastly, i visited a page of the forums and i downloaded envy trackpad and two finger scroll whats the settings of the envy trackpad again, i want it in pictures please

SO the Envy clicpad never mind i went to a thread and found the settings but what does the envy clickpad software do because everything is ok for me except the problem i mentioned

And please provide a link if am to download additional software and/or drivers

Great thread! I have a MacBook and a Chromebook and am extremely used to the two finger right click. It drives me crazy my Envy can not do this. I tried Reil's program but I don't like what it did to the two finger scrolling. Is there anyway to just two finger right click without affecting anything else?

Can someone post all of the default values for the reil touchpad driver? I can't seem to set it back. It saves the current values someone so each time you download it, it goes to that.

    Thanks

This thread encouraged me to do some Googling and I think I found a good solution. It is another little utility like Riel's but you can disable the scroll functionality. Seems to be working great so far :)

I found an even better solution! Apparently the Synaptics driver has the two finger right click functionality built-in. They just do not provide a GUI means of enabling it. You can turn it on with just a regedit and a reboot. No extra programs required :)

Just change the hex value on HKCU\Software\Synaptics\SynTP\TouchPadS2_3\2FingerTapAction from 0 to 2 and then reboot

That's pretty simple, I'll add it.

    Scroll speed- self-explanatory
Acceleration- how much the scrolling will accelerate
Maximum Z threshold- how much pressure the pad senses, so setting the Z threshold all the way up will allow you to scroll with any hardness and if you have large fingers, will allow you to scroll as well.
Delta ratio threshold- not sure what this one does. there are 2 delta values and I suppose it would be to determine how straight your scrolling needs to be until it starts scrolling sideways.
Single tap interval threshold- interval between when you tap 2 or more fingers. For example, if you set it to 150, then when it sees 2 separate tap events within 150ms of each other then it'll trigger a 2 finger tap action.
Maximum finger travel distance- I think this is how wide your fingers can get before it stops recognizing the tap as 2 fingers together
Maximum W threshold- finger width threshold, this is also used to determine whether the tap is intended to be a multi-finger tap or separate repeated fast tap actions.
Maximum Z threshold- pressure threshold, can be used to tell between a palm hitting the touchpad and only having two spots hit (does not trigger multi-finger tap event) (palm = large Z value) and two fingers tapping (smaller Z value)

I'm testing Reil's software. The two-fingers scroll is impressive. I also found that this app uses less CPU than SynTPEnh.exe, and since I'm not using any other enhancements I'm ready to get rid of it.
The problem, Envytouchpad calls SynTPEnh and executes it if it is not present. The solution is to rename the file, but still I'm curious about this behave, since Envytouchpad seems to work well stand-alone.

Yes, I bet that's the case. Renaming the app didn't work, the SDK reports the touchpad couldn't be initialized and Envytouchpad just crashes.
Maybe I can create a delayed task to finish the syntpenh app some time after the boot, but at this point perhaps its better to keep what Synaptics deliver ;)

Are you aware of how much better you just made my trackpad? now I can ditch reils app completely by also changing 3 finger tap from 0 to 4 for middle click and reenabling 2 finger scroll.

Edit: I think reils app has better scrolling and also lets me activate a keyboard shortcut for 3 finger flick down or up. hmm, I gotta play around with this more before I know which is better.

    Edit:

Change ClickPadButtonMode to 3 to enable click anywhere+2 and 3 finger PRESS for right and middle click. set to 1 for traditional.

Hey all, long time lurker here. Just got my hp envy 14 beats edition in the mail today and was wondering a couple things about the clickpad.
I want to get full mac style click anywhere use out of the click pad and want to retain my touchpad on/off button without tapping.
Is this possible? I tried using reils program but it wouldn't work even with the download associated with it on the first page. Thanks.

Somnio, that means that synaptics probably fixed the error. This GUI change only works on a few versions.

and jaguare, the clickpad on the Envy 1XXX series was never designed to do what is happening here. Synaptics never sold or intended it to be used this way, so of course they can't fix it

Can someone provide a step by step (with pictures maybe?) to show how to set up reils touchpad? I really want clickpad capabilities on my new envy 14 beats edition. Two finger scroll and two finger right click are more essentials. <-- Thats what I have right now (1 finger and 2 finger click anywhere and 2 finger scroll)
I would really like to be able to turn on/off my touchpad using the tap button in top left. To have that capability i need to turn on tapping (which i don't really want to have on at all if possible). I've tried messing around with settings and the tap only box but can't configure it to only have the on/off button in it.

If anyone has any opinion on how to get this to work that would be great. I'm up for installing a 3rd party app if I will get the capabilities i want. Thanks

Take a look at the screenshot on the first page, Reil's runs in the system tray. The tap box is something that is kind of weird, it doesn't work for some people in the newer drivers. You can always try what Magus said would work in the first page as well, but it doesn't work for me.

What the different variables in Reil's mean:

I tried downloading the exe file of reil but it failed and said i needed "v4.0.30319" to run. I downloaded the suggested thing to make it run (both on page 1) but it didn't really do anything. Also i found out that I had that installed when my computer was built. So i'm not really sure how it should help me run reil.

I'm not exactly sure what magus said in page 1 but i will go look to see if it can help me. I'm looking to disable all tapping but keep my touchpad on/off toggle available.

Edit: also how do i check what driver i'm currently using?
