Justin, you listed Intel HD Graphics 3000 for the IGP, is that right?

Frankly I think it's confusing for HP to market both a dv4 and dm4, they're so closely related that they should just merge the product line, I thought they would be merging them this time around.

I agree they should merge em...I can't tell the difference between the two except that the dm4 sometimes has extra options that are never available to begin with on the dv4....

The new laptops look amazing. HP really has it going on in terms of style...hopefully the build quality has improved.

I wonder what kind of full-HD screen will be offered. I've seen great anti-glare ones, but I've also seen grainy ones. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

According to HP documentation, it is the 3000. However, I think that really is a typo on their part though...

Idk i haven't heard anything on them yet. HP might wait a little while after these new laptops come out.

Do you guys know if when pre-orders start, we can start customizing the computer on HP's website or will i have to wait for that?

Yeah, it's Trinity. I agree the 40nm graphics are disappointing. Hopefully the dv-series with Trinity will get the 7750m (or above) as an option. (And I hope the ENVYs, or at least the ENVY 17 will at least get the 7850m as an option, assuming it's true that when they get Ivy Bridge, they're sticking with AMD graphics.) We'll just have to wait for more leaks, or an announcement.

I found the A8-4500m as well. It's much slower.

I've heard from a couple people who have seen Trinity test systems that would say this is not the case...unless you just want to run CPU benchmarks all day.

Personally, I'm excited to see exactly what Trinity IGP gaming will look like. Better than this, for sure.

Just out of curiosity - given this is not exactly on topic - but:

    a. are llano and trinity any good against a i7+650m combo?

    b. if one has a dv7 with a 1080p res 17'' screen but plays, say, BF3, on 1600xSomething res, is that a bad thing? From what I've read here on NBR I got the impression that there is a performance loss for playing in non-native resolutions..

    A. Nobody knows. Presumably trinity will be paired up with a new AMD 7xxx gpu and we have no idea how that will perform. The current models with a 6770m/7690m will get beaten pretty badly by an i7+650m though.

    B. It doesn't perform worse, it just looks blurrier. Running 720p on a 1080p screen will give you the same performance as running it on a 720p screen.

    most definitely not.

it would take a miracle for a quad core amd to beat the i7.

AMD has been the underdog since the Core 2 duo days. The only time they did better than Intel was with the Athlon 64 chips.

    Thanks fot the input, folks!

    Hmm.. blurrier? Why's that?

Isn't the current llano + ati7690 more in line with a i5+ ati7690 than with a i7 paired with the same card? This using the current dv6/7 available config options..

If you need to do a lot of CPU intensive work, get a an i7 quad. Otherwise, AMD + Radeon GPU will most likely cost less, give you good performance using IGP for gaming on battery, and feed the underdog.

And 720p on a 1080p is blurrier because it's stretching 1280x720 out to 1920x1080 pixels. Just open an image in paint and zoom in x4. You'll get the idea.

I suppose my most CPU intensive needs would be gaming.. I do however preffer the 17'' screen given that, where I live, my laptop is my only means of entertainment.. There usually isn't a AMD version of the dv7 is there?

So, in theory, llano and trinity would allow for a pseudo-crossfire setup between the Radeon and the IGP?

This isn't true actually. Playing a game at 720p resolution on a 1080p screen will be almost indiscernible from playing a game at 720p on a 720p screen. When you change the resolution in your game, it changes the resolution at the OS/Kernel level, the game doesn't "stretch" pixels to fit your screen, the OS does. Though "stretching" isn't a good term. Scaling would be more appropriate. Whichever screen you choose gaming at 720p will be the same.

Also playing games at non-native resolutions does not cause performance to drop (most of the time). It usually increases performance, but the game just won't look as "sharp"

If you are willing to spend the money, I say always go with the higher resolution screen. If the GPU can't handle gaming at that higher resolution, you can always just lower the resolution settings in the game. When you're done gaming, you still have the luxury of more pixels while doing other stuff, like programming, reading, web browsing. All of which benefit from a higher resolution screen.

I strongly beg to differ. I have a 1080p screen and running at 720p it's as "fuzzy" as heck. Depends on the game somewhat. BF3 looks atrocious at 720p on a 1080p screen.

Even with Anti-Aliasing turned up to the maximum?

Perhaps it does depend on the game. I don't own BF3, but I have played several PC games and haven't really experienced this "blurriness" effect with the proper settings enabled on a wide range of monitors.

No point in turning up the AA, with that performance hit you might as well run at native res.

It really depends on what res you're running at. When I do 900p on my 1080p screen I don't notice it that much but 720p looks noticeably blurrier.

Right. 8xAA will make it look almost like native res but performance is worse than if you just ran at native res.

As I remember correctly, a few of you were wondering if the dv6 would actually come with a GeForce GT 650M option.

HTWingNut, I found this online. I don't know if it is legit but it does seem interesting.. What do you think?

Folks, are HP's the 'back to school' discounts/promotions better than the Black Friday's?

Last year I saw some of the most aggressive deals during the July/August time frame of back to school from HP. Lots of coupons and price cuts, about on par with Black Friday. The difference was they don't do the typical door buster type deals during black to school, ya' know, the $250 - $299 laptop with horrible specs but unbeatable price. Not something you'd actually want as a work horse.

This is probably the best place to ask this: Is there a reason we don't appear to have a Trinity thread yet?

If you find any details about HP notebooks with Trinity, please post them in this thread. We have found mostly Ivy Bridge information so far - but I'll gladly post up some Trinity information too. :)

Nice find, they look great. Seems like they really have beefed up the audio. I find it quite humorous that the leaked picture of the XPS 15 to be released soon looks, based on renderings at least, strikingly similar to what the HP dv6-7000 looks like. Great minds think alike (?)
