what's up with all these manufacturer's releasing laptops with amazing screens and then pulling the screens later (i.e. xps 15, envy 14)? im beginning to think they do it because they want initial reviews of the laptop to be good

I still haven't decided which route to go yet... -

I think you guys are getting carried away at how much this laptop is worth...
Occasionally it does sell at around $1500, but it's not going to fly off the shelf. I think the going rate is more like around $1400. Now subtract about 10% of ebay fees, you're at probably around $1250-1300. Can you get a comparable Macbook Pro at that price? No. -
lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
Unless you are doing advanced CAD or are a maximum gamer - and if you are, the i5-580/5650 would never have been appealing, these components will be as much as 95% of all users need for 2-3 years or more. Ironically, it's the physical aspects and low-tech of notebook computers that keep lagging behind - from screens to keyboards (and their lighting), trackpads, power efficiency, audio quality, connectivity, and overall build quality that, one can only hope, will make today's computers obsolete going forward - a big assumption, that mfrs will "get it," and will know why MBP's share keeps rising. And the Envy is near the top of the class in all of these except power efficiency, so it should not become obsoleted so quickly. But please, the cpu/gpu are already overkill by a wide margin. And Sandy Bridge will only make the cpu more ridiculously overpowered and will do nothing for graphics processing in a machine like this with a discrete gpu, other than improve battery life by needing to run the gpu less frequently. Why do you think Apple sells so many MBP 13s with 2008-09 technology? It hits it out of the park on all the other critical attributes. If the new cpus and gpus coming out would add $200 to the cost of the refreshed models, I'd rather they stick with "old tech" i5-580/5650 processors and put the money into the qualities that make a computer better.
Sorry, been wanting to say this for a long time. -
I just got the shipping email! Woot! -
Mine shipped, yes! -
Congrats on shipping email! will be getting my envy today. -
actualy its only 8% with a maximum of $50 if you list auction style. Paypal will take another $50 so that's about $100 in fees, and then theres the $30 shipping. Basically we have to make at least $1100 before we start making any profit at all
-
Just got done talking to an HP CSR. Mine hasn't shipped, hasn't been canceled, but I was one of those that had a 12 next to my build date. The order status explicitly says it will ship by February 1st, but the CSR says the 12 means my laptop won't be built until February 12th. I know some have had their's shipped that said 12. Goes to show some CSR's are clueless.
-
I always thought it was a typo for 1/2, since everyone who had the 12 had a build date of Feb 1st..which is 1/2
-
Just got my shipping email. I ordered on Jan 16th at around 1pm. Hopefully everyone else is getting their shippin notifications.
To the person selling this for MacBook Pro. I actually sold MacBook Pro to buy this computer. I sold my Macbook Pro for 2100. I was able to buy an iPad and this computer plus keep 400 in pocket. Additionally this computer is more powerful than the latest and greatest Apple has to offer in the 15" range. Honestly after the release of Windows 7 I can no longer justify spending double on a Macbook. I have used macs for the last 8 years because of their quality OS, but as of late Windows 7 has really closed the gap in this department. In the quality department the Envy has to be the closest anyone has come.
Overall, if you have the money to spend go ahead, but don't kid yourself and think the extra cost was worth it. You paid at least 500 extra for the Apple brand. I know, I used to work sales for Apple. -
Guys, I received my shipping confirmation this morning at 430am est. Ordered 1/16 around 1pm pst. My build date was showing as 12, I guess as people said this meant 2/1. However, it has shipped! hopefully no DOA.
It is currently set to arrive by 2/3 at 430pm est latest. Right now the status shows it as "shipment exception" with the comment "Package received after FedEx cutoff" which means it will probably start moving in a bit -
So estimated delivery date of Feb 3rd.. damn Ill be in school all day til 7. Im wondering if I should do the pre sign or let them deliver on Friday.. hmm
-
Ordered at 6 AM PST on the 16th and still nothing.
Did yours have the "12" estimated build date?
-
Ordered mine 1/17 and got the shipping email this morning. I don't know if it means anything about why mine went through or not but I did not use the $500 coupon code initially. I instead called HP Support and asked them to apply it. Of course now the real test will be to check if this thing actually has the radiance screen when it gets here on Friday.

Received my BV replacement for my cancelled Radiance order today even though my build date was Feb 14. My story is a bit more involved than most people who simply ordered a Radiance and had it cancelled, but here's what I ended up getting for a total price, excluding taxes, of US$949:
Cancelled order:Radiance/i5-460M/8GB RAM/640GB HDD
Received: BV/i5-460m/4GB RAM 1 DIMM/256GB SSD/extra 8 cell battery/extra power adapter
On the one hand, I think I ended up with an incredible deal, for which I am grateful. On the other hand, if someone had offered me this deal when my saga began on Dec 17, with the conditions that (i) while I would be promised my unit within 3-5 days, my order would be repeatedly delayed for a total of 1.5 months, (ii) I would have my hopes of getting a Radiance display raised and then dashed, and (iii) I would have to spend at least 15 hours on the phone with HP agents, only half of whom would speak intelligible English, getting inconsistent and/or incomplete information, live chat for 3-4 hours with HP agents, and send dozens of emails without a single response, I would have said forget it. The SSD is great, but it wasn't vital to me when I started this ordeal, and neither were the extra adapter or extra battery. What was vital to me was getting a laptop within a week and not wasting my time, and instead it took 1.5 months and 20+ hours of my time that I'll never get back. -
Here is my story. Initially, I was not fully convinced to spend about $1000 for a laptop, even though, I knew that an Envy 14 is worth the money, due to its build quality, screen quality, GPU, backlit keyboard, design and look. However, I placed the order on 01/15. I thought that I will have time to cancel the order, if needed, before they actually build the system. I started spending considerable time going through reviews of Envy 14, 15 and 17.
Order 1: 01/15/2011, about 05.00 PST
Intel i7-720QM, 4 GB RAM, 14.5" Radiance Infinity LED Display (1600x900), Backlit keyboard, One 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard): $975.19
Based on reviews and user experiences, it appeared that i7 system's battery can last for about 2 hours only. I preferred to have atleast 4 hours battery life. Hence, I decided to order an i5 system with an extra 8 cell battery to bring the cost to $1399, in order to use the coupon. I placed order # 2. However, I mis-typed the 3 digit code and the order did not go through and got an error. I then entered the code properly and completed the order.
Order 2: 01/16/2011, about 03:00 PST (Order declined; please call) - Typo in entering the 3 digit code
Intel i5-580M, 4 GB RAM, 14.5" Radiance Infinity LED Display (1600x900), Backlit keyboard, Two 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard):$1,001.69
Order 3: 01/16/2011, about 03:00 PST
Intel i5-580M, 4 GB RAM, 14.5" Radiance Infinity LED Display (1600x900), Backlit keyboard, Two 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard):$1,001.69
At this stage, I had two valid orders (one i5 and one i7) and I was trying to decide between these two processors. Initially, I thought that if I am spending about $1000, I better go for an i7 system. To compensate for the lower battery life, I bought an extra 8 cell battery. Hence, I placed an order with i7 system with an extra battery.
Order 4: 01/16/2011, about 04:00 PST (Order declined; please call) - Credit limit problem
Intel i7-720QM, 4 GB RAM, 14.5" Radiance Infinity LED Display (1600x900), Backlit keyboard, Two 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard): $1,054.69
Based on the reviews, it appeared that i7 on a Envy may also have heat problem, in addition to the shorter battery life. Hence, I ordered a system with i5-580M processor.
Order 5: 01/17/2011, about 03:30 PST (Order in production - Estimated to ship on February 2, 2011)
Intel i5-580M, 4 GB RAM, 14.5" Radiance Infinity LED Display (1600x900), Backlit keyboard, Two 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard):$1,001.69
I called HP on 01/17 and cancelled previous orders (# 1 and # 3). I just kept order # 5.
While, I was trying to justify myself that the Envy will be a good buy, I came across the cancellation emails in forums (01/20-01/21). I did not get any cancellation email. I called HP and they confirmed that my order is still good. The representative said some orders were cancelled. I should consider myself quite lucky here.
Today, I received shipment notice for the only order that I currently have (order # 5, placed on 01/17/2011, about 03:00 PST) and is scheduled to be delivered from China on Feb 4. -
mine was out for delivery and got delivered at 9am. Sadly I was out of the house and i didn't get back back until 11am. Now the waiting game begins.
If they deliver the same time tomorrow, I won't be able to pick it up. Do i just leave the Signature Paper at my door. I kinda don't want to leave 15000$ lying on my front steps so maybe it would be safer to pick it up.(its 40min away) -
I just might drive by and pick it up for a little fun! LMFAO, j/k
Uhm, but $15,000 Envy 14? Wow that must be some build, hahha, I know, typo.
Yeah, you should call FEDEX and see if they will let you pick it up today. Good luck.

Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
HP forces FedEx to do direct signature. That means, you or someone must be at home to pick it up. They won't even drop it in your door step even if you have a signature waiver taped at the door. If you are going to miss their timetable again (most FedEx drivers are pretty accurate in their re-delivery attempts in terms of time), then just let them take it back to the depot and you sign it/pick up from there. -
jk
it was 1499$ without the 500$ coupon ,my bad -
Been haunting this thread for a while now - thanks for all the info you guys are putting out here on this thread and others.

Should I take this deal? They are telling me I can have my original order with $200 off because the screen is gone. I think its the right thing to do but I also no longer have the slim battery option now. So they is are offering to let me swap in around $200 for the battery.
Here is my original order with radiance and slim battery. $999.34 after taxes and free shipping
Here is what they are saying they can do for me now. This order comes out to $804.99 after taxes and shipping. my refund will be given when it ships out.

(the website doesnt always allow you to do it, but calling always works) -
so if i take the door tag number could i possibly redirect it to somewhere else? or is that just stretching it
Was your HP Envy 14 with Radiance display order cancelled? Post here!
