It's pretty obvious at this point that the cancellations aren't going by a certain cut off date, but the actual criteria they're using is still a mystery. The last theory I'll drop on you guys for our own sanity is that it could be partly to do with payment method.
This to me doesn't make as much sense as what I posted about profit margins, but still holds merit. Depending on your payment method of choice, they may not have received payment from the credit card company nor whatever agency handles programs like "Bill Me Later." If you paid debit let's say, they already have CASH for your purchase in their account. Any business which would turn away cash for a theoretical payment from a third party (even being a major CC company) is pretty foolish.

Were your funds withdrawn instantly at the time of purchase? What were the specs of the unit you ordered? Online or via phone? -
I placed the order on Jan 15 round 11PM EST, i5-580 6G ram 256gSSD Radiance, payment through paypal and money was taken instantaneously~ build date says Feb 1 and so far haven't heard anything yet from HP

I could be mistaken but MOST of the cancellations seem to have had an i5-580 or an i7-720.
-
-
Other than that, I find it interesting that they debited my card 1/17 at the time of my order over the phone (logged into my bank account after hanging up and funds were already withdrawn and cleared). It seems weird they wouldn't follow the same instant debit system for both systems but isn't that unusual I guess.
I just want to get this figured out already! -
Ordered on the 15th mid-morning using Bill Me Later (paypal's credit card)
Differences from the basic setup : i5-580 , 4gb/1dimm, radiance, 1 extra 8 cell battery.
My buddy ordered on the 15th mid-afternoon using Costco's American Express Credit Card.
Differences from the basic setup : i5-580 , radiance, 1 extra 8 cell battery.
Neither of us got order canceled (yet). We both have immaculate credit. I am starting to think cancellations have been picked randomly to match the number of radiances in stock.
-
The i7-720qm's do seem to be the most common processor that's being cancelled.
I've survived the rounds so far with an i5-580m too so at least there's *some* consistency between the three of our orders... -
I wonder whether when they'll be available again?
-
-
However I doubt HP would declare on Facebook & other websites the Envy 14 has the Radiance again w/o having a decent stock or contract.
If not, HP has a couple incompetent people making marketing decisions.
All this shows how much interest people have in good looking displays. -
Seems that none of us are safe. After 6 defective i7 MBP's, I can only hope I'll be lucky this time around -
Mine was an I5 also.

I'm done with this for the night. Frankly, my relationship with HP has been a long, abusive one that has spanned 4 laptops, COUNTLESS repairs, a lawsuit (which I won) and now this. I'm going to see what they come back with tomorrow, but I might be done. I want a computer with a decent company standing behind it and everything I've read indicates that Asus might be the way to go. I'm seriously, seriously considering the Asus U36JC, it has everything I need in a sleek, stylish, light package. Any feedback on Asus would be appreciated.

Since people are adding their info for people to piece out how HP is doing their cancellations, here's my situation.
- i5-580m
- Radiance (duh!)
- 640GB 7200rpm HDD
- 4GB RAM (1-DIMM)
- Bought Sunday Evening; Estimated Build Date February 1st
- Paid with debit card and was charged two days after making purchase online
I think the worst part about this whole ordeal is that I still haven't been refunded. I get that it takes time to process returns, but the idea that some company charged me money and have no intention on giving me the product anymore irks me to no end. -
if there's lot more cancellations to be sent out.... I don't want to wait till Monday,(are they working on weekends?) I need a laptop ASAP, but still a good one, I can't just throw any hardwork on my little netbook....
-
Just need to vent some more...
And what the hell is wit HPs 'apology deal' of "You can get $500 off any HP laptop over $1399, EXCEPT for the Envy 17." Like, really?? I guess they're not sorry enough to give you a laptop just as good (or even better, depending on how you weigh performance vs. portability) as the one you just purchased.
Gah! This makes me want to buy a MBP. Overpriced, but when I walk into an Apple store with the intent to buy a product, I walk out with a product. -
1) Stutterd when playing 1080p content with all proper updates and drivers
2) Creaked when you would touch the palm rest in the slightest
3) Loose/unattached HDD that was moving around the case
4) Screen was completely misaligned to one side that wouldn't close properly and also had a loose back that "popped" when picking it up
5) Hi-res matte unit had a scratch and what looked like two fingerprints on it out of the box
6) Nothing seriously wrong with this unit but the HDD clicked loudly like the read/write head was already damaged
The last one I could've kept, but I was fed up with it by that point to even settle for anything less than perfect. I spent nearly 12 hours in-store and $2650 or so with tax; it should've been perfect after all that.
The Apple Store managers were pretty nice about it but that still doesn't make up for the serious QC issue. They knocked $50 off for "gas money" but that was barely compensation for everything I went through nor was it substantial at all to the cost of the unit. No big surprise in the end though, I went through 7-9 3G iPod's years back. All had HDD failures. -
On the plus side, the battery life is awesome. However, he had to return a faulty one.
If I get cancelled I may go for a Lenovo Y460P with a i7-2630QM, but that will depend on if and when HP cancels me and if Lenovo keeps renewing the coupons.
The 2630QM kills the i5-580 or even the i7-720, but the screen sucks (vs radiance) and the 6550m card is barely above the 5650 (so I would still be about the same in games). -
if mine got cancelled I'll probably get the Sager NP8130~ was considering y560p but the screen resolution sucks
-
I was interested in these as well until I saw all the chilling reviews and posts about their pretty bad service if you have a problematic computer. -
I remember these failure rates published a year or so back. Lowest failure rate? Asus. Highest? HP.

Otherwise the U35JC doesnt get as much glare as the Brightview. -
lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
Personally, I have been pretty lucky with HP products - three laptops in a row with no significant problems on first try (though surprisingly, the one "business class" HP notebook (Elitebook) I bought had significant quality control issues. But they have treated me quite royally in handling the problems - including furnishing a free loaner while I waited for replacements and ultimately taking a ridiculous amount off the price, greater than 60%. I'm always surprised by the polarization of peoples' reported experiences with both the company and its products - either they love them or hate them both, little in between. -

Just checked my email and "ORDER CANCELLED". Order date was 16th Rad + Slice.
-
I was listing one of my Envy 14's with Radiance on Fleabay for $800 and with that $500 discount HP offered, it seemed that it might be a hard sell. I can't believe they ran out of Radiance screens. That coupon was supposed to be good for 1800 orders and then stop. I wonder if the control was not put in properly. I feel bad for those who got their order canceled. With the 1600x900 Radiance, the Envy 14 is a nice balanced system. Maybe someone at HP had an epiphany that they may need to keep a few Radiance screens around to service the ones they already sold

24 pages in just over 2 days. Good job, HP!

I was cancelled today.... CANCELLED!
Order placed around noon on Jan 17th.
My original order was placed on Dec 31, but I cancelled it Jan 15th due to the (supposed) availability of the Radiance... had to wait to reorder due to Bill Me Later... then saw the coupon and was able to squeeze it in under my credit limit while the first one was still "in process" of being cancelled. Apparently cancelling a delayed ordered that hasn't shipped takes 10 days.
Not sure what I will do now, might spring for an additional $200 discount on an SSD but I've heard the non Radiance displays are pretty crummy in comparison, and I know the screen is possibly the most important part of any laptop.
Reconsidering an MPB at this point... or just waiting for a possible envy refresh. Totally bummed out though. This whole experience ordering an envy has been quite an emotional roller coaster. I saw part of the email on my phone and it just said "Your HP order has been..." Figured it said shipped and got all excited, then I read it. Pretty much ruined my day.
I told the rep I was willing to wait for the screen and begged her not to cancel my order... she said she would call me back, nothing yet.

Havent been canceled yet, but I am waiting for it now.
What are the alternatives for a sub 15" laptop with similar specs ? -
To everyone who's been canceled - have you bought anything from hp.com in the past year?
-
-
Only downside is that the battery is a 6 cell, and they don't offer extra batteries nor slices / oversized as options -
I know it may be a long shot, but it seems people, including myself who used some form of Paypal or Bill me Later haven't been canceled... Although it is just possible it is taking them longer to get to us because its more difficult to return our money is a possibility. Who knows, the anxiety of being in limbo is really starting to get to me though.

The review's configuration only had a 1366 x 768 screen resolution (which the reviewer noted as only having an average screen quality), but ASUS informed them of a 1080p screen option and that "different displays will be used in devices for sale." If screen quality for the 1080p configuration turns out well and there is a i5 Sandy Bridge option (for those who want better battery life than performance), the N53SV might be a good alternative. -
Ordered on Jan. 17th, i7, Radiance, SSD. No cancellation email yet but I'm certain it's coming. Another poster suggested lawsuit, I wonder if it would be worthwhile to contact someone to bargain with HP on our collective behalf. Either a $500 off coupon without immediate expiration or for them to honor our original orders if/when the radiance displays are back in stock...

Order placed on 14/01/
My ebay selller's mail:
Hi,
I just checked and the current status is "Order in Production" and not canceled as you feared. HP indicates an estimated build date of 1/26/2011. HP did cancel some of my orders for the Envy 14 with Radiance screen but those orders were ones I placed after yours so you are ok. -
Hey, maybe all those that were going to be cancelled got the email before this weekend, I doubt cancellation emails will be sent over a weekend.
Hopefully all those who have not yet received the lousy "Order Cancelled" email are safe. -

Has anyone been cancelled today?
