For the latch, you just push it down. If you look at the review pictures, they explain what it is really. It's not a "pop-up" lid. I was wondering about this myself! You just close it and it just stays closed unless pushed open.
I carry mine around a lot. I'm posting this from in my class and I've never experienced problems with it popping open in my bag.

Congrats, I will probably be getting a similar system soon.
Were you using the TV tuner with the antenna or plugged into a cable outlet. I am curious as to the quality of the signal of the TV Tuner. Trying to decide if its a good investment or not. Thanks! -
When installed the express card does poke out of the side almost half an inch. the remote is large and there are 4 wire adapters you have to have along so it is not a super portable set-up. But, on my trip I will stow the TV tuner and pieces in my luggage and only carry on the laptop. -
Thanks for the speedy response, very helpful!

Just got my dv6000t last week. I am loving everything about it except the screen. (I got the SEC screen). It's not terrible, but definitely not as good as my previous laptop (compaq X1000). Anyway, I thought I would at least try to optimize it a little by adjusting the contrast, but can't seem to find any option to do that. Is there really no way to do that? BTW my laptop came with Vista.
Thanks
JJ -
What do you not like about your screen? I have an SEC screen, also.
It appears that NVIDIA is slow about updating its drivers for Vista. There's not must adjustment at present.
Bill -
im so glad i got the AUO screen. its amazing.
-
Did anyone ever post a Bloatware removal guide for the dv6000t, supposedly it comes with ALOT of bloatware. How have you guys dealt with it?
-
can someone link me to the thread where they were talking about diff screen manufacturers? i cant seem to pull it up through the search function.
on another note, mine shipped out on Monday (yesterday) and has an estimated arrival date of Thursday! That will be perfect, as my girlfriend is also bringing my STM backpack down for me on thursday and im leaving friday to for a SoCal trip!
wish me luck boys! -
-
The display just seems a little washed out compared to my compaq X1000...similar to the complaints others have been discussing on this list about the SEC screen. Hope they update with better Vista drivers as I think adjusting the contrast would help.

After reading about a million reviews I opted to purchase the unit myself. I read through a large portion of this tread, as well as several reviews from NotebookReview, among others. I wanted good portability (so I had to get the bigger battery) and Bluetooth so I could use it with my GPS (Garmin Mobile10 Bluetooth GPS) and link the MP3 files through my Bluetooth radio in my car. I also opted for the matte screen, due to reflection when in the car using the GPS. I use an Epson RX580 printer to print my DVD and CD labels directly on the disc, and I only use the highest quality media (Taiyo Yuden) which does not offer LightScribe compatability, so I just got the basic 8X burner. I bought a Dell Desktop about 6 months ago, and have been so terribly dissapointed in the computer I decided against ever buying anything other then an HP rig (I still have a 7 YO HP Rig that works flawlessly, after ditching that joke of an OS, ME).
Anyways here it is:
Operating System: Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T5600(1.83GHz/2MB L2Cache)
Display: 15.4" WXGA Widescreen (1280x800)
Graphics Card: 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400
Personalization: HP Imprint Finish + Microphone
Memory: 2048MB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
Hard Drive: FREE Upgrade from 60GB 5400RPM to 80GB 5400RPM!!
Primary CD/DVD Drive: FREE Upgrade: 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
Networking: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
TV & Entertainment Experience: No TV Tuner w/remote control
Primary Battery: 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Productivity Software: Microsoft(R) Works 8.0
OS and Recovery Media: System Recovery DVD w/Windows Vista Home Premium
I bought a Microsoft wireless optical 4000 notebook mouse for the rig, the Garmin GPS, and a sweet Victorinox laptop case, all of which is already here. Now I anxoiusly await the computer which ships out tomorrow (2-28).
I have been a bit concerned about Vista, and will be a tad nervous about this OS. I may run a dual boot with XP if I am dissatisfied. I still want it to look sexy enough to impress, and Vista sure is a pretty package. -
Hi,
Could someone please explain the difference between SEC and AUO screens? I thought the two types were regular and brightview?
Thanks -
Has anyone hooked up an external monitor to theres? Like a 21" WS or so?
-
-
SEC and AUO refer to the manufacturer of the screen, not whether the screen is brightview or not. There are a few others as well. There have been complaints about the SEC screens supposedly being inferior in quality. My own screen is an SEC. It's acceptable, but nothing to write home about. I have seen some rave reviews regarding some of the other screens.
-
Alright, so I bought the DV6253cL from Costco yesterday. So far I'm happy with it.
As of now, I haven't gotten everything working under Linux yet. But I have a feeling that when I do, I'll like this machine. -
-
I'm back!
Congrats to everyone who has purchased their systems since I left this thread -
It's impossible to know for sure about the different screens at any point in time, IMO, unless you could take a bunch of the same computers with the same graphics set up and place them side by side.
Bill -
i actually found the thread, it was actually a poll but plenty of info inside regarding which manufacturer's was "better" or "the best" but i have definitely been hearing mixed reviews about each manufacturer. i too believe the difference is elsewhere.
but that aside. i missed my laptop drop off today (1 day earlier then expected) so im going to give fedex a call and let em know i wanna pick it up soon as im out of class! -
I am ready to order a 6000t at HP's site. Does anyone know where I can find coupons, please?
-
-
but i guarantee, you are not going to find any working, non-expired, coupons. sorry. -
Haha. Joking.
But seriously, it would be very helpful. -
just delete everything that u dont know what it does, and that you dont use. its that easy.
-
Or accidentally break the Win Vista partition while trying to install Linux. Oops!
-
No way that I know of to find out ahead of time. Maybe if you buy in a retail store, they would let you boot it up and check to see which screen it was.
-
Hello everybody. I just got my dv6000t today. I am shocked because it wasn't even supposed to ship until the 5th. So far I like it, but I have a couple of questions. First my power adapter gets quite warm, is this normal? Also, it came with a disk that says "windows anytime upgrade". Would this work as an install disk so I can get rid of all this terrible bloatware? Any help would be great. TIA.
-
-
Yes, the power adapters get quite warm...I think that's normal. Don't think you can use the upgrade disk to get rid of the bloatware.
-
I didn't think I could use the disk. I'm just going to manually delete everything.
sandt38: I did not get any tracking info, they didn't even notify me it shipped, I didn't think anything of it since it wasn't supposed to ship for a while. If you are really worried, you could call them up and ask. -
For you who have just received your new HP (or any other HP owners, for that matter), when you tap around the cover that surrounds the keyboard (the silver part), do you hear the sound of metal vibrating? I'm trying to determine if mine is as "solid" as it should be. Perhaps what I hear is merely the keys vibrating. I know this is a silly request, but I have to return my tomorrow for an exchange or I won't be able to afterwards. If you would be so kind (an make no editorial comments about what a nutcase I must be!) as to tell me what you hear when you tap around the metalicized plastic (or is it aluminum?), I would appreciate it.
The sound that I'm hearing seems to be coming primarily from the right side, and it may be the cd/dvd drive or because the frame has less support there. It's not loud, and it's not like something is loose. It just doesn't seen quite as tight as my previous (and heavier) 4-year-old HP Pavilion.
BTW, I really don't want to exchange it and go through the aggravation of reloading my apps and data, but I do want to make sure that I don't have something that I will have to put up with for 3 or 4 years. If I am assured that what I hear is normal, then I won't worry about it.
Thanks.
EDIT:
I think what I hear is primarily the sound of keys vibrating when I tap on the silver part around the keys. I'm just a little over-anxious about making sure everything is "perfect" before I am unable to exchange it. It is such a good computer. I just wish the keys were a little tighter, but that is more a personal preference on my part, I suspect. -
Airman's Official Debloating Guide for Vista & XP on the dv6000t:
Alright well a promise is a promise, and I did promise to post a debloating guide for this notebook so here it is, even if it's 50 or so pages overdue
Step (1)
The first step is pretty easy, decide what you are planning on keeping and what you want to get rid of.
Step (2)
Step two go into My Computer and to Uninstall or Change a Program, now right click and select uninstall/change on a program you want to get rid of. Now you will be able to get rid of pretty much everything when you first start it up with the exception of a couple programs. Leave anything with the word (driver) and (device) at the end. You will want to leave HP's software such as the webcam driver and the Synaptics driver ofcourse as well. When finished there should be around 5-6 remaining installed programs under this category.
Step (3)
Go around your Desktop and delete all the dead shortcuts to the deleted bloatware programs. Also go to Start>All Programs and delete the old shortcuts.
Step (4)
Download and install CCleaner, download link is located in my sig below.
Step (5)
After installing CCleaner, run it and under the Cleaner box make sure everything is checked except for under the Advanced category, unless you are an advanced user and know what deleting those items will do. Click Analyze, then run CCleaner and delete whatever it finds.
Step (6)
In CCleaner click on the Issues box and make sure every option is checked. Then click the Scan for Issues button after which click the Fix Selected Issues button. This process may need to be repeated 2-3 times if all the registry entries are not deleted.
Step (7)
Thats it! You are now officially de-bloated congratulations!
However be sure to continue running CCleaner's Cleaner, and Issues options to continually keep your system running like new as over time it will get bloated all over again.
I hope you enjoyed my short de-bloating guide and I wish you luck with your new system -
Thanks Airman. I trust this will work on Vista as well, and I will perform the bloat cleanup as soon as I get my new rig.
-
Regarding shipping
On the date of shipping, I noticed the HP site had been updated about noon.
Fed Ex recognized the tracking number that evening.
HP notified me of shipping the next day.
Mine shipped 6 days early and I am having a blast with it. -
Broadus: I can hear that sound too, also primarily around the right side. It's probably not anything to worry about. And thanks for the guide Airman.

to those of you with only 1gb listed, i strongly urge you go for the 2gb.
i went with 1gb to save some money in the meantime but found out that the price to buy thirdparty will save you barely any money. also, vista shows that it is always consuming ~50% of my ram at all times so just an FYI.
so i'll be looking out for ram deals, if anyone has any deals, i need 2x1gb sticks for my dv6000t!! -
Check out the G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Notebook Memory for $159.99 at newegg.com: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231116.
I agree about having 2GB.
Bill -
Just got my new laptop from costco.com. I just bought a new one, and will return my old one within a day or two. I am so impressed with Costco, they really take the fear out of buying a laptop. I decided NOT to get the 17" 9000. I stayed with the 6000! I lowered my processor from the t7200 to the t5600. I don't think I really use the extra 2MB of L2cache. I also got rid of the Lightscribe technology, I thought the time it took and the quality of the image wasn't worth the money. I would rather go back to using a sharpie!
Here is why:
1) After researching the video card of the 9000, I realized that the Nvidia 7600 cannot even use 512mb of ram, and that when it uses as much memory as it can, it often overheats being cramped inside of a laptop.
2)The first battery I got was defective, and I used the 24 hour chat support, and it was GREAT. I told them I would rather have the 12 cell battery, and asked since they were going to send me a new battery, could I pay a little extra and get a 12 cell. They told me I couldn't, and then when my new battery came, it was a 12 cell!!! I paid nothing, and they sent me the best battery I have ever used with a laptop. I love the angle the battery gives my keyboard, and it doesn't add very much weight, and I am now getting over 3 1/2 hours of battery life using my wireless internet. So I can return the new 6 cell I got with my new laptop, and keep the 12 cell I was exchanged.
3) I like the size of the 6000
4) I like this forum and the people in it!
5) I was able to package in MS Office 2007 SBE, by downgrading the processor, and losing the Lightscribe feature. -
Looks like a sweet setup man. So let me see if I am getting this correctly. You initially tried the 9000, and opted for the 6000? I looked at the 9000 and decided there was no way I wanted a rig that big. It didn't seem like a laptop to me. I bought my unit to be portable.
-
you will LOVE your new rig! -
Thanks a ton Airman!!

I am getting ready to make my order on the hp site for the dv 6000t but i am debating whether to get 1 gb and upgrade aftermarket or just get 2gb. Is their any chance If i made the order by phone that they could give me 1x1gb instead of the two 512 sticks so it would be easy to just buy another 1 gb ram?
thanks -
Mixing sticks is not a good idea. I was reading somewhere on here about how someone bought less ram and went to upgrade, but the cost wound up about the same... maybe a savings of a few bucks. I suggest you buck up and buy the RAM with the rig and be done with it.
