    What I forgot to mention in the post is I have BIOS F.16 as delivered. Mine does not whine. It's dead silent and the fan is too. It cycles softly and I run Hitman2 and Contracts on it, also Photoshop's CS3 Beta. The 9 year old daughter hammers it hard running online games for hours. The left wrist pad over the HDD gets a tad warm but she does not complain.
    So the point of the post I left out is, "Does mine not whine because the BIOS is later than theirs?"

    I was going to purchase a dv6000t, but thankfully I came here first and saw the high pitch thread. I did some research here and read that Santa Rosa ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrino) is coming out in late May - early June, so right now I'm waiting... If I'm lucky, Intel will probably fix that sound when it's released...

    Hello Will,
    I have your exact configuration except for the CPU.Mine is a T5600.
    This is my 2M result: 1 minute 12 seconds.

    A friend of mine has a desktop 6400 CPU and did 1 minute 6 seconds.

    So I am glad to see that notebook processors are not that far behind :)

    Hi folks,

    @ Will118 ... How do you like your HP? How long have you had it? Any problems? How is your 160GB hard drive performing? Is it Fast? Any specific reason why you picked the 160GB over the 120GB (beside the fact that is a Larger Drive)?

    Thanks,
    G!

    The whining noise shouldn't be a deciding factor in this notebook, seeing as it happens in a lot of notebooks, from many brands, when using the Core 2 Duo processor--it's just inherent in the hardware and most of these brands have already fixed it with a bios update, including HP (Flash Version 16). It's also not loud at all; it's barely above the threshold of hearing; my audio equipment at the house clocks it at ~10.7 dBu, which is barely above the absolute threshold for most people, especially at high frequencies. Although in theory it would be more easily heard by people under age 30, since the average rate of hearing degradation begins to increase around this age. Also, it seems to be within the high-frequency band of low resilience, meaning that natural sounds (i.e. human voice, music, or even ambiance) easily mask it. The point: it's not a factor that should affect your purchase.

    You could have saved an additional $74 (bringing down your grand total even further to $1,244) by skipping out on the Norton crap/bloatware, which in my opinion creates more problems than it fixes. Or you could have used that additional $74 towards the T7200 CPU, bigger hard drive, or 12 cell battery. Security wire, you would have been better off with a hardware router/firewall and NOD32.. just my $0.02

    I think I've nailed down the specs on my DV6000, which I should be ordering in a few days. Specs: T5550, 1 GB of RAM, Imprint/Microphone, BrightView and the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400. I'm excited, it should be pretty fast. :)

    Got mine Monday. FedEx tried to deliver it when no one was home so I had to go pick it up. Since then it has been great and it has been a nightmare!

    I powered it up and started to explore. No whine, no loud fans. The thing is beautiful! After playing for a while I went to install an enterprise version of McAfee a/v from my work. As it was installing I got the BSOD 4 times. I was a little nervous but I finally called McAfee and found out that the version I was trying to install can't be used with Vista so they told me what version I needed and helped me get it up and running again. In the meantime I must have gotten a virus because the thing started acting really strange and I couldn't use it for a couple of days. Finally I had time to call HP last night and they helped me just do a full restore without backup. Now it is back to factory fresh condition. This time I decided to leave Norton on there until it expires. I don't like Norton much but it will work for now. I'll install McAfee later.

    I'm working through deleting the bloatware but I must say this thing is amazing.

    I'm hoping to spend some time on learning the ins and outs of Vista and transferring my files from my other laptop in the coming days.

    The moral of the story is: don't try to go online even for a minute before you have anti virus software. Seems obvious but I thought I could get away with it. More to come...

    Hi folks,

    @ Longhorn ... Where did you find the $200 HP Coupon?

    @ XStation ... Which "Hardware Router/Firewall" do you recommend? I am new to home set up thing.

    @ Copytekk ...

    Q1: Full Restore "Without" Backup!!! What do you mean "without" backup? Do you mean without the Recovery DVD!?!?!

    Q2: What version of McAfee did they suggest for the Home Use!?!?

    @ Will118 ... Thanks dude ... I thought you already had your toy!

    THANKS,
    G! :)

    I'm using the Norton Internet Security '07 trial version that came with the computer. Though I will probably substitute a couple of free alternatives (AVG or avist! anti-virus and Comodo firewall), I've been quite impressed with Norton. It's much better than I anticipated, and PC Magazine gave the 2007 version its Editor's Choice award.

    1:When you do the full restore from the partition it asks you if you want to restore with a backup or without. I chose without since I was afraid I might have a virus. This does not require a recovery disk provided that you haven't reformated the partition.

    I haven't checked the bios. I'll have to check back here when I get home from work to see how. I want to check the display version, too.

    I haven't had a chance to test the battery life yet. I'll try to post when I get the stats. :cool:

    You guys do your self a favor when ZoneAlarm is Vista ready use theeir security suite. I got rid of several security programs on my xp machine and run ZA as an all in one. Nice!
    If you are running it on an XP machine and want to go to V7. You gotta do a clean install not the upgrade.

    If he just got his laptop, and it was custom, then he definitely has flash version 16. Remember, I got mine on the 21'st and it came pre-flashed with 16.

    As far as Norton is concerned, I think it works great; it's lightweight, works with Vista without compatability issues, and the OEM version that comes with the laptop is free for life (no serial #)... great deal IMO.

    Concerning Copytekk's "virus" issues, I doubt seriously that he got a virus just from browsing the internet, as this is extremely rare, especially when using brand new IE7, a new OS (viruses have Os compatability issues too, you know ) and the quite good built-in Windows Defender. A much more likely cause is that in trying to install incompatible software, he screwed something up himself ;). After all, I had the same problem when trying to install Norton DoD Client Security 2006. I think the moral is: assume that all software is incompatible until you check.

    BTW, has anyone else noticed that Cain's wireless features don't work on Vista? Talk about lame; how am I going to get internet access around town now :( hopefully a fix is coming soon.

    @vap87: what do you mean by "loud"? The fans in these models aren't loud at all, even at 120% (tried it), unless something is terribly wrong, i.e. needs replacement.

    @therock

    These files are the uninstaller binaries for every Windows update you have ever downloaded. Unless you plan to roll back/remove some of your updates, you can safely delete these; the only effect is that you won't be able to uninstall individual updates that correspond to them. If you're worried about maybe having to do this, then simply sort them by "date created" and only delete the older ones. If you don't care, then just delete them all. Keep in mind that more will appear if you update your computer later, but it takes a while until they get big enough to bother with.

    I have never heard even the slightest hint of a high speed whine or any similar sound on my dv6000t. The fan is also very quiet. As for those that do have the high pitched sound, there are plenty of postings on this list with the fix. So I certainly wouldn't let that influence my decision on whether or not to purchase the dv6000t

    If I were you I would spend a little more and upgrade the:

    Processor to atleast: Intel Core Duo T2250 (1.73 GHz/2MB L2Cache) or for a little better performance go with the Intel Core 2 Duo T5200(1.60GHz/2MB L2Cache)

    Video Card to: 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400

    Memory to: 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)

    I would atleast upgrade the Processor and Video card to the above specs, the memory could be easily upgraded in the future (not so for the Processor or video card).

    Your laptop will run much faster with the above specs I posted than the ones you have selected, and you could easily upgrade to Vista Premium if or when you would want to with no problem...

    You should be fine with 1 Gb and VISTA. However, I do agree that you should upgrade the video card and processor esp. since you will be doing a lot of multi-media activities. I am by no means an expert but I have read that the celeron processor is pretty slow....other than that, I think you will love it

    That is definitely possible. I probably just corrupted files. I don't purport to be a PC expert and I definitely dropped the ball when downloading McAfee. :eek:

    Anyway. The important thing is that I got this thing back to working condition and I learned to be more careful. :rolleyes:

    yeah my fan comes on every once in awhile too, like maybe soemtimes every 50 seconds to one minute. As for the noise, i have f"16 bios i just bought this computer like 4 days ago, and i still hear it. I am 19 by the way, so my hearing degradation hasnt started yet i guess.

    I have pretty good hearing and, yes, the fan comes on and goes off. But this is as it should be, and it is as previous notebooks I've owned. It doesn't come on every ten seconds, though--maybe more like 45 seconds to a minute, like the previous post.

    I don't find it annoying though. I'm glad to hear it because it's keeping the computer cooler, no small task with these revved up processors.

    BTW, I don't come close to 2.5 hours on battery with wireless on and actually operating the computer. Then again, I've set my screen on full bright and everything is running optimally. If I were going to be far from an outlet, I would get a 12-cell battery.

    Yea, i realised that today as i was reading the notebook forums.....kinda pissed about it...really coulda used the T7200 or the battery....DAMNIT. But at least i know what when my three years runs out, i don't have to renew... lol

    Yes you are right! sorry about that! Thanks to Will :D

    It expired a long time ago, but i called them and told them that a sales rep gave it to me last week. So basically i lied to them and they felt bad and gave me 80 bucks off!

    Don't you think $80 is a bit cheap for your integrity?

    @Broadus and everyone else who cares

    It has been going around the internet for a while now that any Norton product without a serial key (i.e. 60 day OEM version) is free for life if used correctly. Since there is no serial number to identify the software that is being used (OEM license) there is no way for Symantec Online to tell how long you've been using the product. The subscription (60 days) is stored totally locally! What this means is that when your 60 day subscription runs out, you can simply uninstall completely and reinstall the software, and the timer will reset to 60 more days.... rinse, repeat, repeat, repeat....

    @roxshox

    there is a way to check the BOIS version under windows, but it is much faster to simply hit F10 during startup and look for the field labeled "BIOS Version".

    @people complaining about fan noise

    If I had a choice between a notebook with a fan and a notebook without one, I would much rater have the one with cooling, as I assume you would. Having a fan is worth it when your alternative is a machine that overheats;; fully passively cooled computers are nice, until they melt ;-).

    There is also another quick way in getting the BIOS version using u'r new HP Pavilion dv6000t. Press "Fn" + "Esc" key, u get the basic system info. Click on Advanced key and u see the BIOS version. No need to hit F10 at the start of windows.

    btw anybody know how to get the onscreen display for volume control? For ex., when I slide the volume in order to increase/decrease it I need to get the blue bars on screen indicating the same. It is seen for dv6000 on XP but not for Vista m/c.

    @merm
    I believe you can do it without reformatting/reinstalling your OS, but perhaps not in this version. as long as the product is completely uninstalled, it should clear the local timer.

    @sam999
    I learned something today ;-). This is a useful tool; I never knew it existed.
